More shaders and your there...until I pour a little juice tonight :D
Why show the mainboard tab just to hide the mainboard tab ;) :D:D:D

I'm deadly tired, I'll do something stupid if I stay awake now so this is my final result:
24, 678
Clocks were:
700/1400/531 - car
736/1472/531 - dragothic
752/1504/535 - lobby & nature.
Vgpu = 2.05V
Vmem = 2.2V
Air cooled with HR-03 and three 3000rpm Deltas.
Core and shaders have more headroom but I'm too tired right now to figure all voltage/freq combinations. It wouldn't pass car at 750MHz no matter what voltage, but nature passes just fine.
As my first foray into competitive benching I consider this result not-so-bad, especially with such skilled competitors. I learned a lot, thank you all for motivation
don't you like our Team.AU logo :p: :D
i need those shaders to beat you guys at '03
looks like they gain a lot :D
fingers crossed i have time to do it all tonight again with ln2 ....... and the card is still alive
11K next i reckon :D
and 29-29.5K for '01
Time to head out for the night! My results blow chunks, there was a reason why I preferred benching my other cards this month, this thing sucks to work with. Final stable clocks were 839/1860/422 which it would run through every test fine. 864/1890/424 was stable for only a few tests. LOD was set to 3.6 and not adjusted, once again ran out of time. CPU/memory was left at my 24/7 settings, I doubt it would have gained me much. Card has a 2200uF low ESR cap in parralel with the cap feeding the core and a 10k pot to adjust the voltage. Voltage was set at 2.25v, anything more and the card crashed, 61C all through the tests with a TTBT strapped to the GPU. Memory was crap, voltage didn't help, cooling didn't help, timings didn't help, utter crap. Next time, 128-bit cards, and I'll spend more time modding the cards. Proud of this card though, first hardware v-mod I've done in my life and I nearly killed it :yepp: Now the card is going into my server, underclocked and undervolted
3D01 - 21788
3D03 - 8107
edit: added 3D03 compare URL.
Hope im still elligble, after the GF taking my time last night im about to hit -50C finally this morning for some 3V action.
OK, well it seems the max i can bench Nature was 2.5V which had small stuttering but ran fine (see below)
AT 2.6V it froze half way thru and had more glitches but the card survived well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD-BRFhPgR8
I then decided to put all those volts to good use, and took the new 8400GS WR for benchable GPU/Shader in Nature @ 2.4V.
Didnt want to waste LN2 (QX9770 testing this arvo) so stopped at that with a perfectly fine card.

Fired up this ancient mousepot, didn't have a lot of time so jumped straight up to 2.41V.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/canny/zopot.jpg
Only took 2.4V to blow a FET on this card.

Last update before it fried...card still on air for this one.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=9342690
I thought 3v was too much, but i am glad 2.4-5 was gained with one pass and one fail. Nice work GHZ ( who seems to be called Mark in real life which is a very appropriate name considering) and T_M for the last runs.
We have our winners ..the competion is over
ANYTHING GOES WINNER 2001 = JOHNNY BRAVO
ANYTHING GOES WINNER 03 = JOHNNY BRAVO
AIR COOLED WINNER 2001 = G H Z
AIR COOLED WINNER 03 = SPIKEP
Congratulations to those guys, everyone who blew their card up gets a  and for everyone who competed and struggled with crappy memory :D
It's the first competition I've run like this and I am pleased I could get away with so few rules and everyone acted "like right and proper gentlemen" as Diick van Dyke would say in Mary Poppins.
I'll update the final scores later when I get time.
Regards
Andy
it was a great contest to watch! to bad i couldnt take part in it, because of my comming final exams. (last year in german gymnasium)
congrats to alle the winners :toast:
It was fun and it opened up a whole new segment of benching for me. Now I need to search out more 3D tweaks and get some pots for my GPUs. Great times lie in the future :p:
edit: in my rush to leave lastnight I forgot to power down the PC. The poor 8400GS has been sitting here for ~10 hours with 2.2v pushing through the core, still working though. Hardy GPUs, very impressive.
 great job to the winners, i had problems finishing my benching rig, but it's up and running now. So i hope in hte future to be a part of these fun challenges.
again, i it was great to see everyone work together but still against a card that gave no quarter.
+1:up:
This was great fun, taught me a lot about benching 2k1 :D
I reckon most of the fun was in modding the cards
Awesome work all of you, this looked like a ton of fun and I wish I coulda played.
T_M: Sick clocks
Andy - Wrong Johny lol ;)
I missed out on this one... let's do one for march. ATI this time.
March too soon, lets target April
Yes March is too soon, even April maybe, I dunno what the interest is like for one so soon. STEvil had an interesting idea he might like to tell you about.
Regards
Andy
March is too soon, April might be but I'd say May.
STEvil please tell us!
april gives time to pick a card then. ideas? all i care is that we try to pick a uber low budget card.
great comp guys
I suggest for the next competition the X1550 if it doesn't have any overclocking issues. I'd prefer a HD3650 contest but I think it's a bit too expensive for a 128-bit card. The X1550 is ~$40 and 128-bit. Anyone have any experience with it? I forget if it was the ATI card we talked about earlier that had huge GPU clock walls.
Thanks zakelwe,
For running a most enjoyable and friendly competition
And well done to all the winners.
Someone got a vMem-mod for the eVGA 8400GS 256MB? :)
Got pictures if that helps. Have found only one vRegulator so far, and that one is confirmed to control vGPU(I tried myself). Might get a picture of this up later on if someone want it. ;)
I agree Deanzo, I wish your card would have cooperated :p:
Works but I didn't gain 1 more MHz (266MHz rated Infineon) with additional voltage.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...y/gs_mem_a.jpg
@ownage: What is that and can it be removed after benching?
This stuff
I borrowed it from a friend, it works pretty good. I don't know if its easy removable.
Looks like the next challenge will be more towards spring so being air cooled is going to be a struggle on the stock heatsink. I could have bought a thermalright blah blah but they cost as much as a potential card so instead I have mated a spare heatsink from an 8600GT with a Zalman type heatsink from a 7300GT.
http://www.zen141854.zen.co.uk/hsf.jpg
Will it help ? Probably not, but it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and that matters a lot as we all know :)
Regards
Andy
Hi Andy.
Sorry I missed this one...looks like you guys had fun!
When you make OVP for XFX 8400gs (30k ohm trimmer),do you have to tune it down or just leave it on 30k ohm? I put 1.8v 900/2000/450 and if the core voltage is higher it just goes black...Is that OVP or OCP (if there is ocp...)....What I have to do to raise voltage?
Maybe 2400xt? Interesting card
There are lots of problems with clocking 2400 as it seems. I thought maybe HD3450? It costs the same as 8400GS and it might be fun. I fit survives you can always put it in your HTPC :D
I'd prefer the HD3470 so we'll have GDDR3 vs GDDR2. I don't want to get stuck with another card that had trouble with DDR2-900 :(
HD3470 is barely available where I live, and costs almost as much as HD3650.
Hrm. Could we do the HD3650 perhaps? 128-bit + GDDR3. It is a tad bit expensive though at ~$70 USD in the US.
The cheaper the card, the more participants + more extreme mods (you risk less cash).
i agree that it needs to be cheap. but the gddr2 on the 3450s does not look fun.. the 3650s look quite fun though on the other hand....
prices i can find for both of them run between $30-80 USD.. anywho i am for sure going to be in this competition. :yepp:
i've personally not been able to get any overclocking programs to work on the3450, and maxing out ccc is hardly an event. however if its just me, and you can overclock them more, seems like theres quite a way they can go
If you want to get a new one setup with say a $30 card... im in... :)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121235
That guy sure does look like a good clocker though...
i would rather not do the 8400s. since the last competition was the 8400s.. :p:  :D
Hmmm, i think i actually have a 3450 somewhere...
Sounds good to me.
Lets start next month new competition with HD3450s?
Please look first from your local OCing and IT forums for used one before whining about prices?
I suggest HD3450, HD3470 or HD2400
And Hybrid CF is allowed then of course ;)
The 3450 or 3470s could be fun... i have checked prices, the 3470 closing on 3650s price... might be cool to go with 3450s...
I vote for HD3470, I want GDDR3. Fighting GDDR2 is 0 fun :(
EEK hybrid Xfire hehe
tell use more
and on that note let's give some cheap ATI cards a crack for the hell of it.....just to mix it up a bit hey :D hehehe
btw my 8400GS decided to be alive again  that freaking card is indestructible
it get very hot though lol but i've been using it as a benching card for superpi rigs heheh
hahaha Andy
looks like you might have had one too many
:D
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1...board01mr6.jpg
i was air cooling mine as well :p ........... in 20C ambients too :p:
Yeah my 8400GS is a benching/surfing card now too
ORB link for HD3450 results in 3DMark06
Yup, and passive cooling on both and HD3450 at default speeds.
i see
that's pretty respectable for a cheap ass card heh :yepp:
macci while we are on this topic can you tell us if we are to say buy 3 of these cheap cards in same or different models would we be able to make them run in tri-xfire through this hybrid setup
it would be nice to have an easier interface to overclock multiple cards too (unless something has changed since about 4 months ago) when we benched some 2900XT cards in Xfire....heh.......
Yea HD3470 sounds nice but i can't find it anywhere
Ok found one from germany...
HD3470 256Mb 45€
HD3450 512Mb 32€
Yea i'd rather take that HD3450 because i can find them from Finland...
E: W00t found 3470 one model :D
Price is 51€
but still 3450s price is still 31€ :/
lol 3470 ones are like $100 here LOL
Sry for douple posts.
Damn this HD3470 looks good:
http://www.overclockersclub.com/vima..._hd_3470/6.jpg
http://www.overclockersclub.com/vima..._hd_3470/1.jpg
No high components there: Easy to mount pot :p
And i just think than my gpu pots fits on those perfectly .
E: What the S***! is it possible to run those in quadCF  ?
Hmm... must get Foxconn's 4x PCI-E 16x board...
Like the sound of another contest!
Card choice sounds good too. just gona start searchign for HD3470's though. Can't recall seeing any in the UK. Get back to ya on it.
So long as i can get the card, i am back in. Maybe we will see a little more x850 delivering power again!
- Paul
Hmm, the HD3470 seems nice but i can't get it easily around here.
I would like the same as Dino asked for...
Dino what is the price of 3450s in au?...
Lets get prices compared and find the card to go with...
Comparison between HD3450 and HD3470. If you ask me the HD3470 will be good enough.
Looks like the UK can get a sapphire HD3470 happily. Looks to be a generic PCB though. IS there any not on the standard layout, or different ram chips. If there isn't, it will be a very level playing field, unlike the 8400gs was!
- Paul
Edit - looking at prices, wouldn't the hd 3650 make more sense??? like a tiny bit more, but a chunk more power. just me thinking that??
all i can seem to even FIND is sapphire 3470. nobody i can see even makes them besides sapphire. at least in the usa..
Dunno coz then again, its a cheapazchip 3d challenge...
then the price would go up a notch more and after that, there is a new card that only cost a notch more with more pwr and so on until we are at gx2s or x2s or sth like that...
3450/3470s might be the card to go with imo...
only one hd3470 from sapphire available in germany for 44€
lots of 3450 for around 30€
Just dropping in some canadian prices for consideration.. all from ncix.com
HD3450: $49-$135
HD3470: $76
HD3650: $80-$176
IMO HD3470 is too overpriced. It was meant to be sub-50 $, and 80 is almost 2 times more. Also, it's hardly available, I know of one shop that has them in Poland. That leaves us with HD3450
I guess most of us are leaning more towards the hd3450. The price is more then great. For 30 euro you can even buy 2 cards from different brands to play with. Maybe we should make a poll.
I like sticking to the cheap cards because you can buy two lol ;)
cheap card ftw
aight plenty of 3450s around here.. $30ish but we will have to live with gddr2. since the gddr3 3450s are same price as the 3470 :p:
As other also state, i think we should stick to the 3450s and hold us to the cheapaz 3d challenge...
hmz.. 64bit ddr2.. i have the feeling that these cards are terribly bottlenecked by their ram (especially when overclocked), which automatically means that your final score will be pretty much determained by how you can get the ram (which isn't going to be that high because it's ddr2)
BTW what are you guys gonna use as benchmark? can't be bothered with reading the whole damn thread :D
I've seen 2400XT's with ddr3 for 30-40euros.. seem allright to me.
the 2400xt's its going to be the same thing as the 3470s.. everyone is going to have the exact same card. the sapphire...
yo guys. Just a qucik heads up. you seen how these 3450's are performin g on 03 for example! the 8400gs i had on stock was wiping the floor with it. Guess i personally wana see some numbers as good as, or better than the 8400gs did. Not really moving the price point in the uk for the 3450, but the performance is less :S
Anyway, my two cents
- Paul
Exactly ownage, thats the hole idea with this competition...
although it would be nice to break out of the 64-bit memory bus...
what about 8500gt
available for ~ 40€ and at least 128bit memory bus :D
wow those cards are very powerful and cheap here ~US$50
we would be hitting past 40K '01 with these EEK :)
i could go with that
Strangely the 8500GT is nearer the £40 mark in the UK - eBay has them at nearer £33 so if we're not picky about brands then I see no reason not to use these cards :)
What about something like the 7600GS in either GDDR2 or GDDR3? They're older so should be cheap and easy to get ahold of - I'm sure shops will want to move old stock so should be easy to get in bulk even!
im down for the 8500($50 usd).. alot of different layouts. for some reason the people around here are charging $100 usd for a 7600.
think we should start a poll¿? :)
