ok im trying all the settings the way you stated but not the
VDIMM volt to the memory that is now set to 1.82V and it did the same as above except no display
just a black screen ......it even hit a point of monitor on for 1 second
then the monitor turned itself off
just reporting what is happening

There's a note in the X48 Memory Configuration guide that states that if only 2 dimms are used, then they should be in the furthest slots on each channel. Since the X38 is the same chip and since GHOST is using 2gb sticks I thought it might help.Quote:

What BIOS version are you using now? the latest 1521? If not maybe consider flahing, for me it solved a lot of mem issues.
Mem profile would be a thing to test definatelly. I see that the profile sets the vMEM to 1.9V, what is your mem rated voltage anyway? If it's 1.9v than don't use a much lower one, surelly will not boot. I see you trying 1.7v which is much lower than rated for that mem, according to the profile. if the manufacturer states this voltage you shouldn't be able to boot with a much lower one, maybe a notch or two. Also, these modules are higher density 2Gb modules which makes it worse I'd say.
Try 1.9V if that's what they're rated at.
you can also try CAS9 or 2T command rate for looser timings.
good luck, this is a tough board to tune at first but as soon as you get it going you'll love it.

don't be afraid to give your computer some juice. this north bridge runs very cool. set your vMCH to 1.45 and give your memory 1.9 or 1.94V. you won't hurt it.
your memory says it's rated to run at 1.7V, but that could be for the SPD profile. SPD sucks - it usually has very conservative speed and timings set. what you want is the XMP profile, which requires 1.9V, according to what i've read. now chin up and go overclock it! we all know how frustrating it can be to learn this motherboard's ins and outs, but it's very rewarding once you get there.

have you tried setting your reference frequencies to 333/1333? the other settings you have are known to be good based on what the rest of us are running. i'm starting to wonder if you have a bad stick of RAM. you said you pulled one stick and you ran stable. did you try putting just the other stick in and testing for stability? it's possible that one of your RAM sticks is bad.
i just checked the manuals for both the BT and the BT2 (they're the same). they both say that DIMM A0 must always have a stick of RAM in it. it says to use the blue slots if you have two sticks of RAM, not the black ones.
so how many of you guys are running two sticks in the black slots with the blue ones empty? i've had mine in the blue slots from the beginning.Quote:

If only running with 2 sticks the black slots are better from a technical stand point. With DDR3 the signal termination for the DDR channel is on the DIMM, if the DIMM is in the first slot, the signal travels from the MCH, down the DDR channel, part goes up the first slot and terminates in the DIMM. But part continues down the DDR channel to the second slot and because it's empty it doesn't have any termination. This causes it to reflect, effectively the signal bounces off the end of the pins in the empty slot and the reflecting signal can mess up the good signal at the first DIMM.

Ghost, i think you can get your FSB as high as 450 using the 333/1333 reference clocks. beyond that, you might have to use 400/1600.

have you tried a 2T command rate? it sounds like you're getting better - going from 1T to 2T could put you over the top and make you stable.
on my end, i flashed from the 1507 BIOS to 1521 and moved my memory from the blue slots to the black slots. i was able to pass Memtest at DDR 1720 7-7-7-20 2T timings. over 10,000 MB/s on the Everest memory read benchmark. i'm going to run Orthos overnight before i try to push further. i had a good night overclocking though - thanks to everyone that helped me get this far. my settings (which haven't been refined yet - i'm still looking for the sweet spot):

MB, one thing i think we need to consider here is that the native FSB on the Q6600 is 1066, not 1333, so without adjusting processor multi down (which i have never been able to get to work...always reverts back to 10 once in windows for me) i doubt that the processor/fsb are capable of jumping from 266-450...that is a 69% overclock!Quote:

Ghost, since your CPU is normally 1066 (266 MHz clock) try setting the Reference Frequency to Auto instead of 266. It might work better for you.
Sean, what tools are you using to measure the CPU multiplier in windows? A lot of them don't work correctly as there are lots of different ways for software to try to read the multiplier. Many pieces of software just read the max multiplier not what is really being used.
The most recent versions of CPUz seem to work pretty well. CPUz now shows something like "x 7 (6 - 10)" where 7 is the multiplier the CPU is currently running at and (6 - 10) is the range the CPU is capable of running at. If you run your favorite stress app, such as Orthos, you should see the first number jump up to what you have selected the multiplier to be from BIOS. I don't think older versions of CPUz show all this information correctly.

Ok, in the attached Word doc is what I did with my system (and I had already been OCing the CPU without really messing with the memory).
The initial trick here is to know what voltage settings will result in a stable system at your desired CPU overclock, in your case, 333x9 while having the memory ref and freq at something well below what you are trying to reach, say 333/800 instead of 333/1333. That way, you can rule out “is my vCore or my vFSB too low” and just increase the vMCH or tweak memory voltages and or timings. Hell, if you have to, drop it all the way down to 400/800

and Anubi, i have been looking at multi in CPU-z, never see that range thing come up on my computer. I always assumed that when you saw that on a screen shot it meant that they had an ES or Extreme series chip. mine is just plain ol retail.

we might not have been entirely clear with Ghost about this board's way of not POSTing sometimes after changing settings in BIOS. sometimes it won't POST the first time after changing volts and/or frequencies, even if you're using known good settings. this caused me a lot of frustration while i was learning to OC this thing. here's an example:
i have a good stable overclock, but i decide to try to push it a little further. i enter BIOS, up my vMCH and vDIMM and raise my FSB by a certain amount. i reboot into Memtest and get errors after five minutes. instead of tweaking it, i decide to go back to my previous stable settings. so i reboot into BIOS, go back to my previous settings, and exit - but the computer doesn't POST now even though i know all my settings are good. this is normal for the Bone Trail. all you have to do is power down, wait five seconds, and power on again. it will usually boot into Windows fine the second time. it will now boot every time as long as i don't change the settings. it's just that first boot after changing volts that makes it not want to POST sometimes. we don't know why.
therefore, it's entirely possible that one of the settings you tried before was actually good, but you assumed it wasn't because it didn't POST on the first try. Sean's advice to try every new overclock two or three times if you fail the POST should be the first rule to overclocking the Bone Trail.

then after about 30 seconds somtimes longer plug in the cord and try to power on if that doesnt post .....just wait an additional 1-2-3 minutes
then try again if that fails set the jumper to maintenance mode and reboot
change all settings back to auto/stock save ,exit ,power down
then boot up with jumper in normal and proceed to my next
desired failure ( most of the time)

i think his vMCH is at 1.45 now. it sounds like he has bad RAM. Ghost, you've tried each stick individually and are able to pass Memtest with each one at DDR 1333 and stock timings? if you have, the problem is with your motherboard. if you can't, the problem is with your RAM.
and is i mentioned before, i had to RMA my first "matched pair" of corsair modules. i found it a bit interesting since they are "individually and as a pair tested to 7-7-7-20 2.00v at 1600Mhz prior to leaving the factory." but then again, if any of you have ever been able to see the inside of UPS while packages are moving, i think you can figure out what happened.

In the first setup, your FSB is lower than your memory setting. That won't ever work, it's an Intel chipset limitation so be careful to avoid that case.Quote:

It's on the power page in BIOS setup. I'd recommend leaving it enabled. It's a method of saving power such that the CPU automatically lowers it's multiplier when it's sitting idle.

this is exactly why, in my earlier post with the details of my method, i was saying to start with your memory settings really low 333/800 for example and start upping your FSB on your processor towards 333 and see if it will run and be stable.
if it does, then you have a pretty good idea that your processor is capable of that speed with whatever voltage settings you have and as you increase the speed of the memory and start to see freezes or crashes then you know that some other setting or voltage is limiting you. otherwise it is like trying to figure out why your car wont start and assuming that it is the carberator without first checking to make sure that you have gas in the tank.

also, with my Q6700 i hit a wall with stock vCORE at 330 (could boot and run 329, but would POST and crash upon windows loading at 330) FSB and had to up the vCORE. and since the 6600 and the 6700 processors are very similar with the exception that the 6700 has a 10 multi stock, it is possible that you will have similar results.

ok, here is what i say to do:
first, we are trying to determine too many causes for the problem at once.
1. set the memory to 400/800
2. at stock FSB (266), multi (9), and with vCORE to default, will it POST with 1 stick? both?
3. if not both = memory issues or issues with sockets/memory controller on MOBO OR timings are too tight (maybe got bunk ram)
4. if POST and boot, restart, enter BIOS and up FSB to 386. save and exit and restart.
5. if POST and boot, jump up another 10 on FSB. save and exit
6. load into windows and go get Orthos or SuperPI so you can do some stress testing with the settings.
7. run two instances of one of these for ~15 minutes (with both windows open, right click on taskbar, go to task manager, then processes, find the orthos.exe or superpi and right click, set affinity. for one set it to cpus 0 and 1 and for the other cpus 2 and 3) start both and see if you crash or freeze.
8. if all is ok, which it should be, restart, enter bios and up another 10 FSB.
9. repeat from step 6 until either you reach 333/336 or whatever OR you start seeing errors with Orthos or SuperPI.
once you are around 333, run orthos or superPI as above for much longer, ~45 minutes or so.
if that is fine, THEN start messing with the memory, maybe going from the bottom of the list in the Word doc up until you get to 333/1333 or fail to POST or BOOT or are not stable in Orthos.
this will take you some time, so i will stop here and check back later.

the only reason i ask is because i'm reading various articles and it seems like my memory is benching better at 1500 than a lot of other kits are doing at 1800. the only possible explanation for this is latency and command rate.

Ya, the mutliplier will still drop when idle even with EIST disabled because of C1E. There isn't a BIOS setup option to disasble C1E. GTJ has posted about this before and I think he has mentioned a driver you can load if you really want to disable it.

Here's the OC steps I'd recommend to anyone trying to overclock their system. First lets find the FSB limitation.
Go to memory page, on Performance Memory Profiles select automatic. Hit enter, then select Manual. This will get you back to a know default state.
Set Reference Frequency to Default
Memory Frequency to 800
On CPU Page
CPu Voltage Override Default
CPu Voltage Offset Disable
Enhanced Power Slope Enable
FSB Voltage 1.2
MCH Voltage 1.25
Processor Multiplier set to 6
Host Clock Frequency set to 266, this is default for your CPU.
Next try out these settings and make sure it boots. It should, cause it's all really conservative. Then start raising your Host Clock Frequency until you find the point it doesn't boot anymore. You should run some stress tests for a few minutes to ensure it's stable.
Now you know your maximum stable FSB speed at default voltage. You can try increasing the FSB Voltage, the MCH Voltage. And pushing the Host Clock Frequency higher. You probably won't see much for gains above FSB voltage ~1.4 and MCH voltage ~1.5. And you want to run the voltage as low as you can to hit the speed you want to hit.
Next find the max CPU Core speed you can run. Keep the Host Clock Frequency you just found and increase the Processor multiplier until the system won't boot anymore. If it boots at 7 for example and not at 8. Set 8, then drop the Host Clock Frequency down say, 50 MHz. Try booting again. Now you can move the Host Clock Frequency up and down until you find the point the max CPU Core speed it will boot at. The Processor page in BIOS will show you can actual Processor Speed. Next try raising the CPU Voltage Override. Before you change it from default note what the Current Processor Voltage is as shown on the bottom of the screen. Raise the Voltage a bit and see if you can raise the Host Clock Frequency.
As you can see, it will take a while to really tune your system and find all the limits. Once you've finished all the steps above you should know your max CPU Speed and max FSB Speed.
Next will be memory, but I'm getting tired of writing at the moment :)
Orthos is a windows program that runs two instances of Prime95. It stresses your CPU and memory and will report if it has errors. It's a good stability test. You should be able to find it with google.Quote:

yes, but you are going to want to stop the first 1.
after that, open another window and then go into the task manager, processes tab and find the 2 instances of orthos. right click on the first and choose set afinity and select cpus 0 and 1, and on the other orthos.exe, do the same thing but this time select cpus 2 and 3.
now click start on both windows.

I didn't do a lot of checking, but I've been working through a setup. When I had the multi set for 8 and EIST enabled. In Windows CPUz showed 6 at idle, then 8 under load. When I disabled EIST, in windows CPUz showed 6 at idle and 9 underload which is the max for my E8400.Quote:

Ok, if you know the max speed your CPU and FSB can run next you'll want to find the max memory speed. I don't have a system handy to look at the BIOS page right now so I'm going from memory on the names. This is where it starts getting more complicated but I'll give it a try writting up some steps.
I'd start by dropping your CPU multiplier down to 6 (maybe not necessary, but it helps to eliminate variables) and your host clock frequency down to 333.
I think you mentioned there was a Profile 1 listed for your memory that ran at 1333. I'd start by selecting that, then selecting manual so your starting out with the profile settings.
Reference Frequency is also sometimes called the bus select strap, BSEL, or just straps. Normally the CPU signals this to the MCH, your Q6600 signals 266 to the MCH so it knows what clock is coming in and what ratio to set to get the right memory speed. The Reference Frequency settings lets you override the BSEL into the MCH to force it to use a different ratio. It also sets up other internal things which can have significant effects on stability. It's best to select a Reference Frequency closest to the actual FSB frequency you will be running. So if your running at 400MHz Host Clock setting, I'd recommend selecting 400 for the Reference Frequency.
DDR Frequency (or is it called Memory Frequency) is the other part of the equation that makes the actual ratio clock ratio. GTJ has a nifty spread sheet that does the memory speed calculations. But if you select BSEL=400 and DDR=1600 it will run the memory at the host clock speed. If the host clock is 333, final memory speed will be 1333. If this works, then you can just start increasing the host clock again until you find where it's no longer stable.
If it doesn't run at Host Clock = 333, BSEL=400, DDR=1600 then you have some choices. You can try increasing the timings (bigger numbers) this will give a little lower performance but can increase stability. Or you can try setting DDR=1333. So at Host Clock = 333, BSEL=400, DDR=1333, the actual memory frequency will be less than 1333 (I don't know off hand what it will be). Now try booting with this setting, if it works, then start raising the Host Clock again until you find the point it's no longer stable.
Once you find the stability point you can again try raising the voltage to go faster. You could try increasing the timings to go faster, but often that results in lower overall performance. Setting the timings is really a lot of trial and error. I don't know a good method to step through them, other than just playing around with them. Maybe someone else does other than just playing
The first timing CAS Latency or perhaps its called tCL, I don't remember exactly, but it has a big effect on performance. A lot of other DDR timings get automatically configured are based off the CAS latency so it effects a lot of things.
Command Rate also has a big affect on performance. When set to Auto it will run 1T with 1 stick per channel and 2T with 2 sticks per channel. 1T is better performance, but it could be less stable.
Once you have settled on what seems to be the maximum memory speed, then you can adjust your CPU multiplier back up to try to get as close to the maximum CPU speed you found earlier.
Getting the best possible memory performance setting is tricky, it could be a trade off between Frequency, timings, and command rate. Everest by Lavalys is a good way to check DDR performance. Though even when measuring performance you can trade off between bandwidth and latency.

I was wondering if your mem modules are compatible with X38, there are some specs that need to be met. If those are high density modules, probably double sided (chips on both sides of the PCB) than you need to make those are in a x8 configuration, x16 is not supported, see http://www.intel.com/support/motherb.../CS-028330.htm, but if that was the case you probably would get the 3 dreaded beeps always.

Pros: Snaps firmly into place and runs with MoBo set to default discovery. Runs very fast in benchmark testing.
Cons: I took an egg away, the memory is rated at 1333Mhz and 1.7v but MoBo senses 1033Mhz at default settings and somewhat less than the promised 1.7v. When forced up to 1.7v, the dreaded IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL rears it's ugly head. I had to dummy down to the next highest setting, 1.66v but at least I could still force it up to 1333MHz without stability issues.
Other Thoughts: I'm not going to return these because of the .04v difference but I would have liked the memory to perform as specified. It would have saved me a lot of unrelated trouble shooting
Im not sure what mobo he is using but I am going to try it on mine and hopefully that will solve my nightmare.............................

35 Minutes And Stable In Orthos
Running 2 Windows
1 For Cpu 0-1
1 For Cpu 2-3
1 Hour And Stable In Orthos
I'm Not Sure If I Should Drop The Frequency To 333 Or Leave It At 400
But I Want To Try And Tighten The Timings

Then Going To Maintenacnce Mode Changing Things Back To Original

Then Proceed To Overclock Again
Because No Matter What I Have Tried No Post
So Here We Go And This May Help One Of You Guys Out There Because I Remember In Seans Message I Read To Change Then Boot Back To Normal

Sean, i'm surprised CPU-Z shows your multiplier at 10, considering C1E is always active on this motherboard. my multi is always at 6 instead of the default 9 when i'm idle because of C1E. are you using a program or driver to force C1E off in Windows?
Ghost, i'll keep my fingers crossed for you as you push beyond 333 FSB. i also have a set of Patriot Viper memory (the 1600, not the 1333) and it's a modest overclocker. if you hit your memory's limit and want to continue overclocking your CPU, i'd suggest using a divider - like 333/1066 ref. frequencies or 266/800. that way you can push your CPU further without hitting the memory wall.
and for everyone else - this screenshot shows what i like best about this motherboard. the simple aluminum NB heatsink on this board looks positively pathetic compared to all the copper monstrosities found on Asus and Gigabyte boards now. this screenshot was taken after seven hours of Orthos with my FSB at 445 MHz and no fan on the north bridge. i didn't even replace the stock thermal pads with AS5. this is all bone stock and passively cooled:

Your system would the the first I've heard of here that someone had to DECREASE the memory voltage below rated specs to run faster. I think the Patriot like more volts, try 1.78 or 1.8 and see where you get.

Maybe i should have made myself more clear.
at idle, the multi will drop to 6, but if i manually set it to anything below 10 in the BIOS it does not seem to matter. If i open a program, say adobe after effects or run orthos or something, it jumps up to 10, not 9 or 8, or whatever i set it to.
i am pretty sure that C1E is at defaul with this load, with my 32-bit load i had used the registry file or program method mention way back in this thread to disable C1E to rule out some instability issues.
and speaking of instability, it seems as though my 3rd core is the weakest link. it is consistently what fails in Orthos. i can run it by itself for days without any issues, but as soon as i add any other core to the test it fails.
but i can run all the other 3 cores at the same time and no problems.
would be nice to drop that multi to increase the FSB without pushing the processor any more.
Memory question
since 200/800, 266/1066, 333/1033, and 400/1600 all result in the same frequency at the end, are there any benefits of running one over the other?
