Can only see two cores with HT enabled, new issue
I have been using the new i7 920 rig at 3.66, I have installed Office and a KVM switch so I can address my two 24" monitors easily. All went well. I installed the game Oblivion and maxed out all settings and played for a while, amazing, very fast frame rates no matter what I do. I then checked temps after a few hours of gameplay and I could only see temp on two cores. I went to CPU-Z and only see two cores. I then went into the Bios to check and I have the set CPU to all as I thought.
I either did something to turn off two cores but I have no idea what or I have damaged part of my CPU, does that make sense?
I can get all four cores to show again by turning off Hyper Threading in the BIOS. With HT off CPU-z and System monitor show all four cores.
With HT enabled System monitor shows CPU 0 and 3 are parked.
I can turn this on and off by enabling HT (only see two cores) and disabling HT (see all four).
This is new as up until yesterday I could see all four with HT enabled.
The only thing that is different that I can tell, and this may be a coincidence, is the use of the KVM switch and threfore a new mouse, keyboard and monitors. I have tried switching the mouse and keyboard manually but still using the KVM to switch the monitors and that makes no difference. With HT enabled I can only see two cores or four if you count the two virtual cores but CPU-z and real temp only see two cores untill I again disable HT and then they see all four again.
Chip error or defect perhaps??
