As someone said in reply to this review why didn't they test against a 512mb gtx? fair enuf its the first review i've seen and the guy didn't have a 512 gtx but
if they had at least run a 3dmark or two we could have compared like for like. TBH you can't call this card a winner until you see a head to head complete comparison between the single and dual gtx 512 , gtx 256, 1900xtx, 1900xt and 1900xt CF.
Roll on the launch date.

can we even say the GTX 512 and the X1900XTX are meant to compete with each other? I don't personally think so. I bet ATI thinks they are. But I don't see a single-slot 256MB card clocked low as competing with a X1800 with a dual-slot cooler and 512MB of memory. Besides, isn't the OC'd version already supposed to be sort of a semi-answer to the GTX 512? So that means ATI, in their mind, is releasing a second answer to the GTX 512 with this X1900. Since the GTX256meg card is no match for the x1900 the only thing to compare it to is the all but non-existant, overpriced GTX512.
With the hardlaunch of the r580 series if the g71 series hardlaunches, is everything promised to be, and they can keep it out of the $700+ street price range its going to be very interesting with the shader heavy titles out now and hopefully the push that the x800 vs 6800 series was. With any luck it will come down to features or performance in specific games. Really the only new feature to come along is openEXR(iirc) hdr+AA with the x1x00 series cards. I think i remember reading that nvidia had no plans on working this into g71. I dont remember(and really never understood :confused: )the tech difrences between standard dx9 HDR(used in HL2) and the openEXR hdr(farcry 1.4) but aparently farcry's technique is visualy better than hl2's but incompatable with NV hardware with AA. If this will become a deciding factor or not depends on the software designers. Very familiar situation tho, seems similar to sm2.0b vs sm3.0. Oddly enough 2 years later the same game is the stomping grounds.
Here is a interesting question tho. How would the preception of the gfx card market have changed if ATI had launched r520 in september to compete with the g70 hardlaunch? Given the extremely close performance of x1800xt and gtx256 and the myth that is the gtx512?
If nvidia has as poor a launch with g71 as r520 was(even if they are available in april it will likely be considered as bad a stumble as the 4 month late r520) will it be a 1 step forwards 2 steps backwards situation as hard as the industry and enthusiasts came down on ATI?
Well, I don't think so. AA + true HDR is a nifty feature to have, but right now performance doesn't make it realistic. It's small beans in comparison to SM2.0 versus 3.0.Quote:

HDR+AA vs sm3.0 now isnt much of a comparison. smart shader 3.0 has caught on and both compays support it. Its going to be used. When sm3.0 was first released mid 04 iirc it was a major selling point of the 6800 series for really nothing at the time exactly like true hdr+aa is right now. Do the 6800 cards gain enough performance to be noteworthy with current titles because of sm3.0? Ive not seen anyone force sm2.0 on any of the recent titles with 6800 hardware so maby it worked out but it only gained a handfull of frames 2 years ago, didnt improve iq any(not that it was supposed to), and didnt allow you raise your details any higher and remain playable than with the 2.0 path.Quote:

im wondering why the x1800xt is in much larger supply than the gtx512. is it possible that the demand for the gtx is just way higher and ati doesnt sell as many cards?Quote:
