Does anyone know the exact measurement in length of the X1800 cards and how much longer in length it is over the older X800 cards? I am trying to see how this is going to fit in my case (Antec P160) as SATA connections on the motherboard as well as cables I have at the front of the case may be in the way. I want to measure and organize ahead of time. Thanks.

I could not measure it exactly but its like 22CM in lengt, My radeon 8500 is like 17 or so. ( it was a big Gigabyte maya card. )Quote:

about 9" if the card is 230mm like I read someplace. That is damn big and as I thought it is going to be a tight, tight fit thanks to that stupid ribbon cable of the X-Fi.
can someone please address this? Because Im having doubts it will be usefull putting a 80mm fan on the x1800 like it was on the GTX. Again, cause on the GTX the air has some place to go besides back up through the fan itself. It also creates a sort of vaccume on the heatsink, barely any air hits it.Quote:

I can get 1.25v on the core but don't want to go higher. I could get 650mhz on the core, but card gets very hot, resulting in core artifacts.
I don't think it will do any good. Just buy a Vf700 CU cooler That wil give you a 10c lower temp than stock. The top is sollid and then i can't use the sruface of the heatsink to get rid of the hot air. I think there is a chance that your card will overheat if you will cool it with only the top fan.Quote:

i was thinking the same thing considering ram is similarily placed plus mounting holes as the Zalman fits on both. Anyone care to try it out? Will the ATI Silencer/NV Silencer cool better than the stock XT cooler which is said to be pretty good in its own right?
It will fit on the mounting holes but i will get problems with the voltage regulator heatsink. That ting is about 10mm high. So i think thats the problem for Artic cooling. I don't know how they whant to fix that.Quote:

The best cooler atm for VGA cards will be the X1800 XT stock cooler. It as a high power high speed fan. And a gigantic kopper heatsing of 20-25 mm high. To that will be able to handle the heat. If i would use 1.33 volt like the XT my zalman would insinirate. With that 40 amp stress test it got like 73c with the zalman !!. Games run cooler. ut 2k4 was like 32-36 amps.

Alright - I've already contacted Arctic Cooling, none of their existing models will work with the X1800 series, however they are already developing a cooler for the X1800s - expect 1 - 2 months before release still.
Will the AC cooler work better, yes. Mainly because the AC coolers exhaust the hot air from the Case, they dont just circulate it like the VF700 will. I have the GTX cooler and it works great load temps dropped 20+ deg c and my chipset temps dropped because the hot air is being exhausted.
I still think strapping a fan on would help because it would cool the heatsink - the heatsink is still touching the memory and the core, that dinky stock blower fan can't push more than a few CFM at best so strapping on a 25 CFM fan will cool the heatsink resulting in lower temps to the core and memory - I'll test this theory my X1800XL should be here today, monday my vf700 will arrive.
Im also wondering if a stock GTX cooler would fit it, or at least just the heatisnk which is open on the top and really worked well with the 70mm fan strapped to it. My load temps never broke 60 with an AMD64 70mm fan attached on the GTXm before that little mod load was 78 deg c.
tbh i still think the artic cooling design is pants too. a very important factor of cooling is pressure, when you push air along a heatsink with fins running same direction theres no real pressure no air mixing up well and the base which would be hottest has no force on it. if you think about air like invisible water and think about all the waterblocks and designs and cathars extreme high pressure sinks working best you get the idea. plus a fan thats sitting on a surface with only a small area where the fan is moving air into the sink cos most of it is blocked, airflow is dead and lacking pressure.
best kinda thing would be using a zalman remove normal fan fix biggest fan you got underneath it and use something to duct air outta whatever free backplates you got . i'd stick on a xp120 if i could find a way to attach it as well if you look at space between fins on the zalman only half way out from the centre does airflow really get between fins, the whole centre is one mass with very littler surface area storing way to much heat.
I might just wait for the arctic cool. I sure they will make it better than current coolers. Maybe a revised design.
Will see how much the zalman goes for locally.
i actually did just that, the fan on my zalmann was making a racket, so i popped it off and strapped a 92mm panaflo on there, ill take some pics when i get home...i just dont have anything sucking air out from the back plates, good idea i think, might create more turbulence then cooling benifits though.Quote:

I went back and ordered the VF 7000 after I ordered the card, so the cooler wont be here till next week. I'll have to figure out something till then.
another thing i did with the stock cooler was take the cover off the PCI slot just under the PCIe slot. This will let the x1800 cooler suck in cooler outside air instead of hot inside air.
