I think with the current economic climate we will see ATI be aggressive on their pricing in order to get the folks that have been on the fence on whether to upgrade now or wait for the GT300 series. If the specs are correct and they price the HD5870 at $300 that should get a lot of folks off the fence and upgrade. Most folks do not upgrade from one generation to the next, they usually skip a generation to maximize their investment. Those looking for maximum performance will not care about pricing since they are probably not brand loyal and will just buy whatever if fastest, so they would jump on the new ATI cards and then the GT300 series (assuming it is faster) when it comes out. For the mainstream, I think ATI will be aggressive to grab more of that market share.

RV870/Cypress will be competing with the GTX380. The fact that it beats the GTX285 should not be a surprise nor should it be impressive. Nice marketing though, making a big deal of it beating the GTX285.

Nvidia's new generation IS the GTX 285.

There will be no such thing as the GTX 3xx series when the HD 5x00 series launches in October.

If that's the case then ATI's (going-to-happen:confused:) aggressive pricing on 58xx is going to make sense early.

That would be better, competition is good, pretty good.
But then again, nVidia is gone dead silent for now.:shakes:

Not sure if this is relevant but there is apparently a global shortage of GTX285s, this usually happens in the run up to a big launch of next gen nVidia cards as they turn capacity over to the new designs. Maybe GT300 is closer than had been assumed.

While Charlie is a crazy SOB at times, at least in regards to Nvidia, his info is pretty accurate and is substantiated by other sources. Only ONE source has stated that Nvidia could launch and supply cards before the end of the year, that is the shady source IMO. Most other sources are stating a Q1 launch if things go smoothly and there is always the chance that there are problems so a Q2 launch isn't out of the question.

The only chance Nvidia has to hit a '09 "launch" is to ship a few early samples to reviewers.

The funny thing is, they don't have to launch in September, all they promised was before Windows 7 which it obviously will be.

Why do people get compare two different sorts of launches the same way?
There is how AMD is launching- We have hoards of cards ready but want to do a proper launch and give reviewers enough time but don't want cards being leaked into retail or OEM/distributors to force our hand.

Or the Nvidia launch of- lets rush a handful of cards out to reviewers even though we won't have any decent number of retail cards for a month or two...

Obviously both those situations are soooo similar that they should just be lumped together... :rolleyes:

Is there to long time to wait until next gen. or is it coming before christmas? So many dates an different info here.

i still run an 8800gtx on my 1680x1050 monitor and i can still run all games at high settings and about 90% of them with at least 4x AA as well. the sole exception being Crysis which will jnot run at Very High but only on High which looks almost as good. i think it would be safe to say that the 8800gtx is the best aging graphics card ever created considering it is many years old now and still can play games on high with no issue.

but back on topic a $300 price sounds about right for the performance of the card considering it will be around the level of performance that a pair of 4870's (we think) offer and a pair of them cost around $300. but i am looking forward to finally have a new single card faster than a GTX 285.

I think ATI's new cards will make their older cards totally obsolete. And that is good...for us...but not that great for ATI.

And it is sort of funny that ATI/Nvidia keep releasing bigger and better cards when their current cards run all games just fine. Business is hilariously predictable and evil.

Hell, when I went i7 last month, I thought: "Hmmm, should I do anything new for graphics?" and just bought myself an extra 8800gtx for 40€ on ebay.
These 2 monsters do just about anything you throw at them, INCLUDING crysis xD

OT: 299$. Lets hope that doesn't translate to 300€ :)

It's been happening for years now, the hardware is so far ahead of software development, even more so since more studios go for consoles hence the hardware envelope isn't pushed as far.

I bet you a buck that the GT300/5870 will play games on (very) high details for 2,5 to 3 years to come as well. No doubt. Crysis is the sole game that can still break hardware into a sweat, but with Yerli's prediction that till 2012 we won't see any major improvements in graphics, I'm certain that this gen will last long as well.

Still rocking my 8800GTX. Works very well still. :)

I doubt it. I think people tend to forget how many games there are out there. The benchmarks you see in reviews are the cream of the crop when it comes to graphics/cpu usage, and even then most graphics cards can rock em without breaking a sweat. Now, think about the "lesser" games that the MAJORITY play. You think a 5870 won't be able to run those games at max in 2 years?

Businesses keep releasing rehashes to milk a technology until it can milk no more. They don't do what they do for our benefit. It's ALL about making money and tricking people.

9700pro. How low was that thing king? 2 years if you don't count the 9800; then it still ran games well for another 2 at least. Hell it still runs source well. But that's not why we frequent this forum. I'm still rocking my x1900xt it runs every game I have on it with little to no sacrifice in quality. (like i may have to shut off AA)

Video card makers have put the consumers into an awesome position. With even a ~$150 4850 you can run pretty much any game out there with maxed out eye candy, and most games that will be coming out in the next year should be good too. I love the idea that a $300 card may soon be able to give me 1080p resolution with 4xaa 16xaf on a modern day game.

In my experience - silence from either manufacturer has always been a bad thing. Same with delays.

True, but the GT200 generation was out since the same time the RV770 came out. The GT300 will be here about 2-3 months after the RV870.

ATI does not seem to hint anything that says the 5870 will be THAT MUCH better than the 4890. But then again, I hope ATI is still understating themselves, like when they said that the 4870 was only 50% faster than the 3870, when it's actually closer to 100% faster.
