Black PCB? I'm convinced, period, nothing will change my mind.
We've had these Nvidia SP vs. ATI SP discussions before, please search before trashing the topic.
OT: Does anyone knows if ATI will release a X2 FireGL card? I know they will release a new FireGL serie based on HD4xxx, which they never did with HD3xxx.
I wonder if the reason it has a black pcb is because they going to call it the Black Edition like the amd processors
Completely random theory, if its black edition maybe they have shader domain clocks (equiv to unlocked multis?). I'm dreaming but I want it to be true :(
guys will the 4870X2 have any problems with X48 boards? i've heard the 3870X2 wasn't booting in most X48 boards.
I just hope they hurry up and get it released cause i want one. Also i hope Thermalright hurry their ass up and get a T Rad designed for the 4870X2 aswell.
That would be nice but I'm not so sure how they'd do that.
It however does look like it may fit height wise so who knows.
However them makeing a dual style T rad2 for it would be sweet but highly unlikely because I don't think though it'll be popular that it'll have a big enough market.
From the looks of it so far I'm worried about it's cooling ability and performance because of the fact its down clocked from 4870 apparantly so 4870's overclocked would seemingly be faster thanks to better overclocking headroom I'd assume. Can't wait to see what it can do though.
Hopefully optimistic that this new way of communication is what it's hyped up to be, don't understand the nay sayer's who don't have a clue but criticize already.
I think that the best way to compare would be rv770 as 800 and g80 as somewhere around 300 since one of the operations didn't always work. That way people know the full capabilities of each card. Thus we have that the 4870 has 800 shaders @ 750mhz, and gtx 280 has 720 shaders @ 1300mhz, so looking at that it is understood why gt200 outperforms the 4870 but not by much.
But seriously, enough of this. We've gone over it a billion times, what's most important now is if those shared memory diagrams do mean that the 4870x2 will have shared memory or if they simply are diagrams of how it would be done and what it offers
My geuss is: No shared memory for R700. Better communication between the 2 but no complete memory sharing in the sense that there is no (or hardly any) penalty for a lookup in the other GPU's memory pool.
I'm not getting your numbers though, AliG.
Black's nice but when your gaming or useing your comp you shouldn't be staring in at your graphics card lol
It'll be saying hello through it's nice images on your screen w/e they may be ;) lol
But if they stick with black it'll go over well with those judemental based on appearance.
Please ATI. Please, please be have done something for microstutter. I want fluid movement in super-AA quality. AND I don't want to get a GTX 280. And after reading that thread I'm not too keen on buying a 4870 and OC'ing like mad, either. Please................
2x 175W?
Doubt it, most likely, as with the 3870X2, they bin high for dual GPU's, to find ones that will reduce the total load the cards pulling.
I wonder the performance of 4870x2 when coupled with a 4850 or 4870 or another 4870x2
it will be a truest supercomputer @ home
Umm does anyone remember the press release they said 250w tdp I believe.
and it doesn't take fully twice the power that one card does, don't believe the 3870x2 or 9800gx2 did either. Just look at load on some review sights and you'll see.
I doubt it'll be to great scaling of 3 and 4 GPU's is bad right now as shown by tri and quad sli and previous crossfireX. Though since they seem to be focusing more toward dual card solutions they may have improved it a bit.
I'm gonna take a guess at scaling of maybe 30% or so for a 3rd card and like 15% for a fourth.
If I remember correctly a HD4XXX based firegl will be announced around september.Quote:

btw a HD3XXX firegl was released, the firegl7700.
The issue is the 3870 has a TDP equal to a 4850. the 4870 is some 50% more. You need more than perfect bins and so on to make a "real" 4870X2. Thats why alot bets on its actually 4850 chips just with GDDR5. The TDP would be too high and the card lag additional power connectors for that to be 4870 chips.
That's also what w0mbat has said so far, that R700 will be two RV770 chips clocked at around 4850 speeds but with GDDR5.
well it does have additional power from the pictures that have been shown so far it had a 6 pin and an 8 pin connector. Unlike the 4870's dual 6 pin's.
and I believe it wouldn't be a massive increase over gtx 200 series?
Why would it have to be a massive increase? And as you even write yourself. Chaning 1 6pin to an 8pin would not even be near powering an extra 4870 speed GPU (Not even a 4850 or lower if one is a 4870).
Not sure why you stick so hard to this...You _really_ want it to be 4870 GPUs, because? Everything points against you and you keep trying...
Umm why wouldnt I want it to be a faster better graphics card? wow.
You just seriously seem to want to dump on ATI's parade.
If a single 4850 can be powered by a single 6 pin, whats to say 2 couldnt make it on 2?
Your talking like it'd be impossible to hook to cards together yet it's been done before without super massive power requirements.
Who cares, even the 4850's have hit 900+. And the ones in an x2 will probably be binned for low voltage compared to a 4850. I know that if I got an x2 card I would slap a/some water block(s) on it and the whole stock clocks point would be moot. And I'm sure I'm not the only one here either. ;)
