I'd be happy to test for a sample. After going through the DDC roundup, it's very clear to me you need to plot the full curve to know what performance you get.
Nice efficient tops tend to have a much more rounded curve which may or may not correlate at all to the maximum pressure or maximum flow rate points.
Or at a minimum I would suggest recording the total pressure head (outlet - inlet) at 1.5GPM or 2.0GPM, that's where it counts.

Eddy mentioned that this result was in comparison to the stock top. For years, we have drilled and tapped the top of the DDC inlet line to provide a direct suction side source into the pump rather than the 90° turn on the stock top. I know Coolermaster did some tests on this and an old website name "cooling system" or something like that also showed the mad and a huge increase in performance.Quote:

Don’t get me wrong as i’m no expert on this but if I understand Martin correctly, it looks like chocking the outlet may make the D5 have better head / flow basically by whacking as much water into the inlet as possible but restricting the outlet – pretty much like you would by nipping the end of a hosepipe to increase water pressure.Quote:

You mean me? I've dropped all my designs to date besides the most current in DarthBeavis D5 top thread. I've been doing them there as DB send me his pump to build the top off of. I've just recently picked up a perty new digital caliper and got all the measurements taken. My old one was only SAE and only accurate to the 1/10th of an inch. I picked up a new one thats good to 1/100th of a mm and 1/1000th of a inch. Also, the locking screw on my old one was broken so I couldn't hold measurements. I've got everything recorded but, I left the sheet at home, I was going to upload the measurements here for everyone to have. I also completed a new design based on the updated sizes. I was pretty close on them all when eyeballing. The furthest off was on the impeller inlet, I was off .025" at .525". The design is essentially identical to my last one with the exception of updated sizes on the impeller as well as a cross-section of the top added. Unfortunately my new milling slide was damaged in transit(god damnit I hate fedex) so I sent it back and will just be buying a whole new mill. My old one was a floor mount drill press thats about twice as old as me with a milling slide attached. My new one will be a bench mount on a custom bench I'm building with a 5" slide with no rotation as the plate on my new drill press will rotate so I don't need a rotary slide anymore :) Not as accurate but, I also have a very nice lathe for if I need to be too accurate with rotations. I've sent the current design to my AutoCAD guy to see what he can pull together for me then the CAD design will be off to my CNC mill guy for a prototype and if testing goes well from there, I'll have an injection mold priced out so that production costs will be low beyond the initial investment. It's not going quickly but, it's going.

How about a better impeller for the DDC 3.2?
sounds promising, i have to build a watercooling setup, i am still int he market for a pump, i like what i see here.
thats going to depend on how it's mounted. The D5 is a mag drive pump with the impeller actually epoxied to the magnetic core so it's pretty out of the question. I'd have to see how the impeller is mounted to the DDC. To be honest, the impeller on the D5 is pretty well laid out, the veins are a bid wide and far spaced but, again, the pump wasn't designed for water.Quote:

I guess I'm just too picky :p: I've e-mailed a couple sources to see if I can get my hands on the 3/4" plastic and the brass union pump housings for some variation in factory design. I'm really just at a loss on the design of the standard top on these. The clearance around the impeller is just gargantuan. I really think that you could pump jello with the D5, it'd only be good for about .5gpm and have no head but, I think it could do it with the ~1/2" lateral clearance on the pump. The cavity at the output is possible what baffles me the most though. All the pressure the impeller does manage to build up is going to drop off to nothing in that large a cavity, the only thing I can figure is the 90* bend for the outlet was intentional to try and re-build pressure where a straight outlet with that size cavity wouldn't be able to. I guess we'll see when martin gets an EK top to test as they have a linear outlet with a large cavity similar to the stock pump. Without a side by side with the stock top I just can't tell what the lateral clearance on the EK housing is.Quote:

It's clamped to the Laing motor instead of using the buttress thread. I'm not really sure I like it being clamped, since it will require more parts, and thus more cost (screws, washers and a flange). It does allow a volute that is fairly well in a single plane as opposed to the Laing volute.
Screwed like the Laing mounting is lower cost, especially since the nut can be reused. I think likely I'll try both bolted versions and screwed versions.
Anyway, I guess I'm formally throwing my hat into this race! This piece was fairly easy and quick to machine, probably economical to produce as is, and with some development geared towards it's manufacturability, should be profitable (which means I would actually do it :up: ). Obviously I'm going to need a lot more development towards things like a mounting arrangement to keep it quiet and make it easy to deal with.
I'm surprised, frankly that v1 could be any good at all :shrug:
