OCPulse Heatsink Showdown! Comprehensive Air Cooling Roundup

Hey guys,

I'm sorry if this seems like a stupid question. I spent most of my time reviewing Water Cooling because I want to go with that setup, however I feel that I'm probably going to start with air until I finish the purchase, to try and keep whatever cost I need down.

Anywho, I see that it seems the Thermalright Ultra-120 is up there in performance, and not bad on the price tag. Despite it's girth / weight, it seems to be a decent HS. Am I to be correct in understanding that this does NOT need a fan and that it was suitable for the testing without it? Or would I need / want to install a fan on it after installation into my case?

if you were not to overclock, and depending on the type processor, you could probably get away without a fan or at least, a low rpm fan that makes hardly any noise.

Oh it definately needs a fan, the fan used in the tests was a medium speed yate loon, however if your planning on going watercooled eventually i would say save your money and go with a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 cooler instead. Everything is included.

Its a loss on both sides, i cant provide information for the people looking to purchase them, and i cant recommend the product or give feedback to a person looking to buy the product unless they send me somthing.

Cor so many different coolers. I am thinking of getting a cooler for my QX9650 to replace the fairly good Stock Extreme cooler. Was thinking of the OCZ Vendetta 2?
I am not looking for a huge overclock...perhaps 3.6Ghz at the most, (400*9) however I am looking for a quiet and not too heavy HSF...preferably PWM connected
A lot of these HSF's nowdays seem to weigh over 600g!
Good work with the round up Spawne32 I read a couple of your reviews to, which is why I am leaning towards OCZ Vendetta 2 and also the HSF it is based on

Im working on it, im bogged down heavily at home with alot of other things in my personal life. And as far as the big typh 14 goes, Thermaltake has already assured me as soon as they get them in stock out in cali, that they will send me the sample, but i wouldnt expect anything anytime soon, usually when you see stuff released by TT in taiwan or whatnot, it takes about 6 months to get here to the USA offices.

I wasnt expecting it to come close to the TRUE, however those reviews dont exactly look to be top end, how do you test an OCZ Vendetta at load based on "auto" http://smiliesftw.com/x/ugh2.gif

anticipating round 2 :d great writeup and gave me lots of insight to my setup!

The new big typhoon, like the old one, will need a really high pressure fan to perform best. It's got very tight fin spacing and all the heatpipes run directly in the path of the air that should flow through the fins. That's why it doesn't really perform well with low speed fans. I've got 2 Delta Electronics 140x140x50.8mm, 1.37A, 3200rpm, 250CFM fans here. Put one of these on the big typhoon, using a controlled voltage source and you'll perhaps have one killer heatsink.
