[UPDATE]abit AW9D-MAX first result

Thanks coolarer I have always been an Abit fan. I can't wait to see the Abit RD600 chipset board. For you people from abit that seem to be reading coolarers post. PLEASE!!!! Work on a board with some PCI x slots and a useful pci-e pci pci x layout . If you don't the Pro workstation board from Asus is going to kill ya. I don't like Asus much . AS of right now ASUS wins !!!

I don't like the layout:

1. PCI-e slot #2 if used blocks only available PCI slot.
2. If full length card in PCI-e #1 memory latches probably can't open.
3. If full length card in PCI-e #2 two SATA ports are inaccesible.
4. Capacitors and a filter right below PCI-e #1 could conflict with dual-slot video card.
5. No PCI-e x4 or x8 connectors, just 2x PCI-e x1, one or both of them inaccesible depending on the video card used.
6. Molex at the bottom requires some ugly cable to stretch to the bottom of the case.
7. Heatpipe system doesn't help cooling a bit (pun intended).
8. Battery is placed very incoveniently.

Thank you very much for the review ...... its what i've been searching for and has answered a lot of questions for me ....... it is the last part i'm anxiously awaiting to complete my build .................

i just hope i'm quick enuf to snatch one up before they're sold out

for those complaining about the single PCI slot ..... this board is not for everyone and is meant to be an OC'ers board so if you need more than that ....... just get a different board ...... i am an AVID ABIT Fan and feel good knowing they are getting back into the OC'ers community

EDIT: in the pics with the Heat pipes removed it appears to have 8 phase power PWM if the this true plz confirm if not to much trouble

OK one last thing

package contents ....... did it come with the Guru clock ? cause i'll probably swap it out for the GURU panel from my current rig when i give this one to my son ........ he can have the clock

Read somewhere that lead me to believe that the number of phases = the number of inductors. It has a :banana::banana::banana::banana: load of regulators and 4 inductors. I have no idea though, just guessing

I Second this, it looks like this motherboard was never designed to be fitted into a case for 24/7 use. Why the hell is the molex connector in the bottom corner of the board?

Some people running lean systems will get away using this board, fair play to them. But it would not have taken too much thought for Abit to have moved the pci slot away from the second pcie. Instead they filled the gap between the 2 pcie's with pcie x 1 slots, which quite frankly are a waste of resources, as there are very few devices that actually use pcieX1. Many people don't care about pcie or pci slots, but quite a few of us do need them. If you are going to provide slots (which abit obviously is) why not add proper ones, spaced out effectivley enough to use? I suppose ABit tried to max out fsb performance by keeping the whole pci-pcie bandwidth lean to reduce nb overhead.

The price point is the key to Abit's succes here, thay need to keep the board sub $250 if they can anywhere over that is getting too close to the Asus Pro boards which offer more upgrade options. The one thing that can make this board a real killer is if Abit manage to enable a forced 1333 fsb strap option for the users, the then available high fsb will make the board attractive, especially on the 975 Crossfire chipset. Using the 1066 strap we will probably see this board maxing out somewhere near the Asus P5WDG2 Pro, which is more expensive, but allows far more slots for everyday use and is just as overclockable.


I really hope that Abit can offer the force 1333fsb strap in bios, it will make this board stand out from the crowd and offer the highest outright 975 fsb available. I know it's early doors, but now is a good time to ask for what we need to see on this board in terms of bios options, if ABit cares about it's overall sales, they will take note and perhaps work toward making this board a real 'MAX'.

and i concure the layout is a total turd

i thought these stupid R&D people had gotten their heads out of their rears ages ago when it came to ram latches hitting video cards.

and way too many of the new boards are slamming the sata ports right in the way of the 2nd pci-e

not sure who checks over these guys layout designs but someone seriously needs to wake up.

i am looking for a new and better board but no way i'll get it if the ram is THAT close to the video card.

coolaler can you comment on how close the ram really is to the video card ?

we may see Abit respond yet. It's the only thing that'll make this board reall attractive to all users, as it'll be worth perhaps giving up some peripherals for the super high fsb.

If we don't ask now, we certainly won't be seeing it in a few months as ABit will be concentrating on other boards, we all know this happens with bios refinemment, you have a 2 month window to get what you need, after that it's wishful thinking..
