Alright, I've got an update. It seems I can run prime95 on either core by itself without a hitch. Whenever I run it on both cores at the same time, prime errors. I have ran it on core 2 for 9 hrs. and core 1 for 2 hrs. If i run it on both at the same time, the first one start fails, but the second one fails. I have followed the direction on how to prime dual core over fdrom another forum, and I even went further to create two directories and set the processor affinity both in prime and windows task manager. I've also uninstalled the processor driver. Now here is the catch, Prime works fine 8hrs on running both cores at stock speeds. I think it maybe my mb still holding me back. Any suggestions, remember 2.4 would be fine with me, but 2.7 would be perfect.

The 175 retail I ordered from mwave last week just doorstepped here.

It is a CCBWE 0534SPMW 50032.

Looks people had pretty good luck with those. Was expensive enough for sure. I don't have time to pop it in right now :(

I just got this one in today and was not very happy seeing the week 0541 on it. But right now its priming happily at 2600 w/ 1.44Vcore. I had it at 1.47Vcore, and 2700 was a no go. Not be best of clockers, but not the worst either imo. I can probably end up with it at about 2600 @ 1.41 or so. This is only one of two that im gonna test though. This one will likely not be mine as i have a CCBWE 0543TPMW coming tomorrow. Im praying that the 0530TPMW and the 0543TPMW will be similar in that they are the only ones ive seen with TPMW.

ccbwe 0541 rpmw batch is 0096

2700@1.55 (bios setting) fully stable with water cooling
Core1 seems to be stable with 1.525 or even 1.5
Core0 is the limiting factor
Will try and cpuburn it...
2800 cannot be obtained with 1.62-1.64V

edit :forgot the model-- 170 :D

Im not sure yet. Only had it in for about 5 hours now. The 0541 is kinda a voltage pig though, so im crossin my fingers that the 0543 will kick arse. I did notice that my SuperPi 1M time dropped just from going to the Opteron over the X2. Dropped from 33.4 or so to 32.45. I guess its due to the Opty's better mem controller.

Yay, I finally passed super_pi. I moved my memory from the orange slots to the yellow slots and changed the command rate to 2. I'm ~stable 2.4x10. I'm pushing higher now.

Could be the extra cache thats helping your SuperPI score. Thats my guess anyhow.

Me? I've got a DFI Crossfire board sitting in another rig that's waiting for a video card and an OS. I was contemplating moving my Opty and cards & drives to that rig... Would need better memory as well though. These spectek chips just weren't made for o/cing.

Edit: anyone got any recommendations on a decent 2GB DDR kit that'll do up to PC4000 speed and 1T, preferrably at low volts? I'm not too concerned about timings, but 1T command rate is crucial.

Well I got my DFI NF4 SLI-DR back and everything is hooked up. The voltage reported in windows has always been a little lower than the predicted voltage in bios, but after the rma it seems like anything over 1.45v cpu startup it isn't even close. It scales pretty well with vid up to 1.45 and a % over vid, but after that it drops down to ~1.4v no matter what vid or vid % I put in. Anyways, I can superpi and do everything else I want with perfect stability to 2.8ghz on an opteron 170 with stock voltage except prime. I installed prime in two different directories and set the affinity... Is there anything else I need to do? I'd like to do some real testing as soon as I can.

I had previously edited my startup with the timer thing to stop it from going crazy in games but I have not yet done all of the dual core stuff listed in the thread about how to correctly install dual core drivers.

Anything I could try would be appreciated.

Get the Mushkin 2GB Redline PC4000 kit.

I am running 260HTT, 1:1, 3-3-2-8, 1T no problems... I'm sure they could do more if the CPU could... I booted up at the same settings at 270HTT 1:1 too, but the CPU can't handle it (tried a lower ratio to make sure, so it's the CPU).

the old redline that was utt required high volts, but the new 1gb parts don't require high voltage. mushkin rates them for 2.6-2.9

I'm running mine at 2.8V 260HTT 1:1 3328 1T, I could prolly use less volts, but I just set 2.8 and have always had it running that way... no mem errors, and it can go higher.

I think at 2.75 you will be able to run 260HTT as well, and more, with good timings.

Since I'm low on cash until after Xmas is over I'm just a little hesitant about putting too much Vcore through it. So I forced myself to limit max Vcore for now to 1.7v :D

See sig for rig, running stock Vapochill LS and G.Skill TCCD. The IHS is still on for now (for the same reason I don't want to use too much Vcore ;) )

My TCCD maxed out at 309x10 and the chip maxed out at 3124mhz 284x11 with 1.7v in bios. This is both dual prime and SuperPi32 stable. Got into windows by accident at 3399 when I left the multi at 11x but who cares about suicide shots :stick:

I'm a happy camper so far, I've had several X2's and this dual core is best by far. Here is a list of the previous X2's I've had and max dual prime stable under the Vapochil LS:

4600 = 3180mhz "naked"
4400 #1 = 3050mhz "naked"
4400 #2 = 2980mhz
3800 = 2950mhz

Nice Work Major!

So far my 24/7 Overclock on air is 2700 @ 1.48Vcore. I was able to reach 2800, but the volts needed were too much for me (1.56Vcore) although i almost broke into the 20's on SuperPi 1M (30.2 Seconds). Im idling at 27C and the picture you see below is under full load. Im using 704-2BTA bios.

I have been following this thread since it started.

I knew the opterons would dry up fast, so i bought 4x165's. 1x170 and 1x175

The 170 and 175 were the famous 530's and they are just amazing

I got a 0534 and 0541's and honestly they seem to clock about the same for me on the 165's.

I am running a DFI Expert with GEIL one W BH @ 250ish 1.5-2-2-5

The 0530's are just wow, 2900+ no problem. I have to sell the 175 because it is a little rich for my blood, and my buddy stole the 170 for his watercooled rig.

So, here i ended up with a 165 and it made its into my rig with just a stock AMD heatsink and it seems to love 2.7.

I am enjoying lower Vcore of 1.47Vcore @ 2640, 2700 took a little over 1.5vcore, and I am on a stock cooler... so im playing it safe, especially with the screwed up CPU temp that the DFI expert is reporting. I am at 38C on a stock cooler according to smart guardian lol!!!

Memory is at 240mhz 1.5-2-2-5-7

The one thing that is driving me nuts is my GEIL HATES anything above Vdimm of 3.52. Even at stock speeds, it just cant stand 3.6+ vdimm.

Any suggestions on this? I ran it at 200mhz 2-2-2-5 and it would error out.

Any suggestions to help me out here, this DFI expert board seems pretty tricky, but it has been good to me so far. I threw in two 7800gtx's and didnt have any problems with them, so that is a good sign as well.

Again, i am glad to join you guys, and any insight/advice on how to crank up Vdimm would be greatly appreciated. I love the CAS 1.5, I am hitting 38ns latency in everest! Just want something that can do 1.5-2-2-5 at 260+ and if I could use more Vdimm, I know i could do it! I am stuck at 255 :(

Been working on testing out my 170 that I got in a coulpe of weeks ago.

Its a CCBWE 0536MPMW.

What a disappointment..

Im hitting a brick wall at 2450Mhz. I know overclocking isnt guarnteed, but was hoping for a little more seeing the 0530s running 2900+ on stock air.

Is there anything I can do to squeeze some more out of this, I was hoping for around 2600. Im running 245x10 with a 4x HTT. Ram is 1:1 (this stuff does 280 no problem)

Here is my setup.

DFI SLI-DR Expert
AMD OPTY 170 CCBWE 0536MPMW @2.4 10x240 1.45v
Mushkin Redline 1GBx2
XP-90c /w Panaflow H1BX

Estimated Load temps, around 48-53c (SLI-DR Expert reports Opty temps way low)

Any suggestions would be cool.

Ive tried putting it to 166. At 250 x 10, Memory is running around 208.

Fails prime at 1.45 in about 15 seconds.

I think I just have a crappy proc :(

These need volts. What voltage do you have?

I have a similar one and at stocks volts it doesn't do jack. However, it reacts very well to volts, and heat and power consumption indicate it is reasonable happy at those volts.

I have it at 1.6V, Big Typhoon.

It has been dual-priming all night.

I have been initially disappointed, it doesn't clock well at lower volts. But it seems that this one really likes mid-high volts. Power consumption and heat indicate that the load is not insane, so I might very well settle for this 24/7 and see what happens long-term.

Most I have pumped into is is 1.525, It will prime at 2.5 (250x10 1:1 4x HT) for about 30 min at that vcore.

I didnt think it would be safe to pump any more through it with an XP-90.

Going to try your suggestion, kinda risky since I do not have an accurate tempature monitor. (SLI-DR Expert is way off on Opterons) I believe its reading around 20c low. Assuming this is true Dual Priming at 1.568 is still keeping me at ~55c. PWMIC is 41c and Chipset is 43c.

I have everything running smooth at 2.6ghz with stock voltage on my opteron 170. Much more than that and it will become unstable but does not scale at all with voltage. It seems like I just can't get it to play nice with my memory even though all of the timings are really lose. Once I figure it out Ill post some results.

Nobody can tell you how much volts is safe.

I made a decision that this CPU wants the volts and rewards it with much better clocks. My single-core Opterons have much smaller gains from high volts. My decision to feed this one what it wants includes that I won't complain if it breaks sometime soon. If it does, at least I'll know what an unsafe voltage is :)

As for temperatures, get a fan controller with thermal probes. If you insert the probe under the heatsink's base plate right next to the IHS on the chip, with contact to the IHS, you come very close to accurate readings. Just mentally add 5 degrees, or "calibrate" by using it on a board with working monitoring first.

Another thing to do is get a power meter and observe how much it is drawing. To produce excessive amounts of heat it would also have to draw a lot of power. This is the main reason why I trust my overclock above, the 1.6 volts dual-core with dual prime does not draw more than my 1.6 volts single-core CABYE.

(disclaimer: yes I know volts kill independently of heat, this is why I say I take my chances)

Well so far,

Raised the Vcore to 1.568

Just passed 2 hours Dual Prime at 10x250 1:1 4x HT

Moving up to 10x255 and trying that.. So Far So Good.

Seems you were correct that this stepping like some voltage.

Judging from my experiance on how warm my HSF gets at a specific temp Im estimating around low to mid 50s for temps..

Mine is the exact stepping and it sucks just as bad, glad someone else is having the same problem, I thought my board or memory was failing. I can run super pi at 10x2.4ghz and that is my best. I think I am going to ebay mine.

well got the cpu stable 23hrs+ primex2 small ftts @2650Mhz 1.48V CPUx10 HTx3 (600 in Bios) HTT650 but due to mobo not liking TCCD mem its only at 176.7MHz 1T 2 2 2 5 relaxing the mem timings doesnt help to get the mem above 200MHz stable (unless u count 2200MHz htt220 1:1) Hoping for a bios update to improve compatability with TCCD mem - untill then I am stuck out off syn with poorish bandwidth :slapass:

Do you have your other memory timings set to Auto, and just have the divider and 2225 set? Or do you have other manual settings as well?

well I have tried many differnet setting 1t 2T CAs ras etc had this mem stable at 265MHz on my MSI Neo2 Plat so I have treid so much it hurts - its like a blurr the last week - this Bios 703 doesnt like TCCD or doesnt like mine the settings ATM are auto except the mem is limited to 133MHz in bios any higher and it fails to boot when overclocking -oh set mem to 2.9Volts could take it higher but the mem doesnt need that much its not like I was going for 1:1 @ 300HTT

weren't you able to hit 2.95 GHz or so on that chip before you fried your old board?

Well just an update on my 0536 Opty 170.

Earlier today I couldnt get 2500 stable until 1.568 vcore. I dual primed it for around 2 hours. Now after that Im running 2500 at 1.52 vcore, and its been stable for over 4 hours. This is the first positive sign I have had out of this processor, maybe this stepping just requires some burn-in to work well. I'm just hoping for 2.6 (Don't think its worth the effort to go any higher with this proc)

I thought my DFI board PWMIC temps were holding me back but i basically capped out at the same speeds with the ASUS board.

I just can't get 2.9 GHz primestable. (dual SuperPi 32mb is fine)

2.8 GHz @ 1.4V seems to be the sweet spot..

You think my 12V rail going down to 11.72 could be effecting my overclock?

Anyway, going to be keeping the DFI board.. the Asus board does have some nice features but it was way too expensive ($270). I prefer the DFI bios and I won't be using SLI so it is kind of a waste.

Still within the ATX specs, however I think you might need a larger PS.

You are pushing it for a 450w imo. But hell Im pushing my PCP&C 510 ATX-SLI :P

I went with the Enermax liberty and that powersupply has really suprised me.

I just got the 500watt version and i was running 7800gtx SLI's, amd opteron 165 w/ 1.55Vcore and some bh memory running at 3.5Vdimm.

My ATX +12V always stays at 12.22, seems like a very strong 12v rail.

ATX +5.0V sits at 4.97-4.99 according to smart gaurdian under CPU load, and 5.02 at idle.

that's a pretty decent drop IMO.

My Enermax 660 keeps my opty, plus my 2GT's (see sig) going strong, Single Instance of Prime plus running 3dmark05, and I see about .02V drop on the 12V rail... Though I have 4 Rails and it's hard to say how this mobo is interpretting that, it's most likely just reading the rail for the 24Pin ATX. The GT's and devices have their own rails, as does the 4Pin CPU connector...

settle for the 2650, i did lol

2650 @ 1.4 seems to be great for me, runs nice and cool anyway.

According to this DFI board, it runs at 23C lol while the PWMIC is 36 and chipset is 39.

DFI REALLY needs to fix that.

Glad to see someone else with some GEIL. My memory wont do past 255 ARGE! and it wont even take more than 3.52Vdimm! ARRRGE!

Need some advice: No speculation please, I can do that just fine myself.

I am now running a Opty146 @ 2900 mhz (100% stable) (H2O)

I am contemplating on buying a Opty 170 and tryout some dual core happyness... but !

Will I be getting better preformances from the dually even if I dont get it higher than 2600? I have read that on some benchmarks 2900 single = 2600 dual.
Will my system feel faster with the dual running 300mgz slower?

All questions I am asking myself..

Any of you guys actually try both?

Dual core is the future.

I gave up an FX57 @ 3.4ghz in favor of dual core at 3ghz and never looked back.

In everyway it is superior to single core

yeap my dual core 165 at 2.6GHz beats the crap out of my old 144@2.9GHz......3D/PCMARK/games/encoding/everyday stuff....dual core is great :D i actually scored my highest ever 3DMARK scores with dual core rather than single core even though it runs slower..... ;)

Coz of the high HTT on CPU. Havn't had much time to tweak timings on the memory yet so all the memory settings are at auto in bios (inc divider) apart from the 1T setting, I guess thats what the mobo has set them at for stability. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to memory timings anyway and as I am running raid 0 I dont really want to corrupt my install until I get everything backed up. All my efforts have gone into the cpu atm as I'm still burning it in.

Looks like my PSU may be the problem.

I was getting a bsod SuperPi 32mb 2.9 GHz @ 1.53V.

I disconneceted my other hard drive and dvd-rw.

passed 32mb.. 26m 05s (my fastest time ever) probably could get it under 26m if i wasnt multitasking while benching.

Failed within two hours upped it a bit more and BSOD whilst priming and gaming on line - so it looks like it needs the 1.5V thats 1.3x + 200mv option in the bios

I put 1.6 V (DMM measured) for 2.70 GHz to get dual prime 20 hours (that means failed after 20 hours).

It's a tough call. We have one person who burned one up at 1.65 (although I don't know whether that was 1.65 reported in sensors or set in BIOS).

But I am doing prime-stable overclocking only, so to speak. I wonder whether slowly going to prime limits can ever short-term damage the CPU. After all it would start acting up in software first. (yes I know high volts always do long-term damage).

Does anybody remember who was the user who lost a DC at 1.65 V?

Almost finished testing the OEM 170 0530 I got from NewEgg earlier this week. Looks like 2.7GHz (1.45v) is as high as I can go with reasonable voltage. I can't get it prime stable at 2.8GHz this side of 1.55v. Core 1 is the one that always lets me down.

I'm a little disappointed that this Opty is not as good as some 0530's, but it appears to be better than a lot of other 170's. I've got 10% more performance than my X2 4400+ at $100 less, so it's a definite win.

BTW I discovered that apparently CnQ on an Opteron is not the same as on an X2, and as such I was not able to enable it. However, I found the RightMark CPU Clock Utility that seems to do just as good a job. In fact, because it's fully configurable, I much prefer it to the AMD CPU drivers.

Yes I had this running at 2.95ghz with some stability (2 hours prime?) and then I started playing with some stuff and fried my board. I was doing that with a ram divider and now im trying to get it stable 1:1 but it just isn't working for me too much higher than 2.6ghz. I know that my ram is capable of >300 mhz but it has been a while since I've done that and I don't really remember how I had it configured. Finals are next week too so I haven't had a whole lot of time :(

Alright, I'm completely aggrevated with my opty. It won't even prime stable at 2.4 with 1.55 volts and lowering the memory divider. Any ideas on how I can get monarch to swap me out a new one. I have a 90 day warranty.

i have my 170 at 260x10 w/ 1.45v
the ram is on a 9/10 divider, it is running at 236@3-3-3-8
so far prime hasnt given me any errors :)

Sure, just call them and tell 'um that your 170 will only OC 400MHz and your pissed! I'm sure they'll be begging to take it back.... :slapass:

Well seems 2700-2750mhz is best stable i can get and 2800mhz benchable right now - have to wait to get some better cooling to go higher ;) :)

For now broke my previous PCmark05 high score of 7,689

Go 1.45 and you should be fine 2.5 dual prime stable. Make sure your RAM can handle it or use a divider. I'm running at that speed 24/7 with no glitch.

Welcome to the club... my OSA170 0534 SPMW was the same :( so I promptly sold it off to minimize the depreciation.

wow that setup will give you a decent boost..........according to a user here at XS going from Thermaltake SI-120 to Apogee resulted in 8-10C temp drop :)

So far my 165 CCBWE 0534 SPMW is looking very good.. I have 2.8GHz about 2 hours prime stable at 1.55v, and 2750 with the same volts ran for 49hrs while I was away for the weekend. Running my 1x1GB (until the other comes back from rma :rolleyes: ) at 278MHz with 9/10 divider. The memory controller is not that good, it won't run 1T I have to use 2T, but what do I care.

165 0534 seems to be better than 170 0534

0534 opty 165 here, stable at 2.7, and not much higher.

0541's that I was playing with seemed pretty similar, stable at 2.6/2.7

The only problem is I am on a stock heatsink, so I dont know. Perhaps the 0534 has more left in her, just waiting for my new heatsink to arrive. I am also waiting to put my 170 0530 under water.

I had two 165 0536MPMW. One clears 2600@1,45V but won't go further. The other one wouldn't hear about overclocking at all : it wouldn't boot in windows with 220*9, even with a Vcore bump (1,4V). I thought about a bad contact (even if temps at stock were normal - 21 idle, 25 Load), but when I removed the CPU block I could see the AS5 evenly spread on the CPU and the block.

I guess it was the black sheep of the waffer...

guess all the guys at OCAU which are getting same if not higher results than mine all got lucky..........man i can't even imagine having that 220*9 dog of a CPU

My 0534SPMW needs 1,55 volts to do 2700 :stick:

It is core1 that always fails me at the lower voltages.

Burned it in a few times now.
But could not see any noticeable difference at higher clock, only at 2,5-2,6Ghz core1 now needs less volts.

I'd love to see this one hitting 2800Mhz...:nono:

It now completed 38 hours dual-prime at 2695 MHz.

Either the Ceramique had to set in or the 5 MHz made the difference.

With 4 GB of RAM, too.

Dont feel bad, I was stable @ 2.7 w/ 1.5vcore, now Im not even stable at 2.6 w/ 1.5vcore once I changed to a new heatsink.

This is frustrating, I am really tempted to just put my 0530 opty 175 in and call it a day.

edit: I really think it is this DFI board. I was testing with my trusty asus A8N-E and I had no problems doing 2800 with my opty 165.

I am going to get to the bottom of this, but I am really not very fond of the expert so far.

Another update on my opteron 165 in DFI expert.

Letting it just sit for a few days seemed to have done something.

Did a little bump up to 1.6vcore with big typhoon, seems happy for now. Seeing if I can lower it after a good 12 hours of prime, maybe it will be stable at 1.55vcore, which i would be much more comfortable with.

My core0 sucks, seems like core1 can do 2800+, but core0 just cant do it.

Currently- HTT: 305 Core speed: 2745 Voltage: 1.6

I would take some screenshots, but my crappy overclock isnt even worth the effort.

I REALLY wish DFI would fix their BIOS. My big Typhoon rocks, but i have no idea what my vcore temp is.

According to Smartguardian it is a nice cool 40C, yah right.

I am guessing it is about 60, which is on the edge, but it is holding stable.

BTW, the bigtypoon: nice cooler, sucks to install.
