ok so if i stop folding tonight will it resume when i startup tomorrow? or does it just start over? This is a pretty cool idea if you ask me!

It starts off again where you left off. Also, there is a deadline for all WU's. If you load up F@H and it starts to compute an old algorithm and the deadline has past it has to acquire a new WU.
Hi everyone. Just wanted to say I have started folding for Team Xtremesystems with my new 4870. Figured I might as well put it to work for something useful while my computer is on. I don't have all the super sweet systems that some people have here, but hopefully after I get out of school I can make some upgrades and crunch some more :)
I recently started folding for Xtremesystems.
Currently my rigs are:
I7 920 @ 3.36 and a pair of 4850's
phenom 9950@ stock and a 4850(wife's computer)
phenom 8750 black edition @ stock with a 3470(server)
phenom 8450 @ stock with a 3300 igp(HTPC)
athlon 3700 plus @ stock with a 7950 gt
So my question is, how do i get the most out of these systems for folding? I'm running a gpu client on all of the computers except the 3700 and the regular x86 folding client for all of the computers.
I've tried to get the SMP client to work on my I7 rig but I cannot get it to work. Also I'm only running only one gpu client on my I7 rig due to it being crossfired.
Also, I cannot for the life of me get F@hmon to pick up my stats. Does it store the stats in another folder in Vista 64?
Thanks in advance,
Corey
:welcome:
Stuff is stored in a weird spot in Vista. I believe it is c:\users\all users\app data\roaming\folding@home etc or something like that.
For SMP on the i7 you need to either turn off UAC to allow SMP to work (which you could install and run 2 SMPs on that easily), or I think if you just run the SMP client in elevated, admin mode it may work that way too. I just disabled UAC because it annoyed me anyway and I know enough to not get myself in trouble :p: You could try doing the ATI GPU client on there too with 2 SMP clients running, the hyperthreading might allow for that to work. Just make sure to give each F@H install its own machine ID (so like 1st SMP is ID 1, 2nd is ID 2, then first GPU is ID 3, and 2nd GPU is ID 4). You have to kick the cards out of crossfire mode to have both folding though. Might need a dummy plug or a monitor plugged into the 2nd card to make it detectable by F@H as well. I'd recommend using rivatuner to kick the fans up higher to keep the cards cool.
Phenom rigs would do SMP as well. THe 4850 on your wife's PC could run the ATI GPU client.
A64 The 3700+ just a uniprocessor client, but it might not be worth the electric bill to run it. Now if it is already running for something, well, stick it on there ;)
How is everyone folding their i7's? 2 smp's, 4 smps? Right now mines running stock @ 2.66 and making 4200ppd. That about right? Also on fahmon its showing one of the smp clients doesn't have a team assigned, I tried redoing the client config and still reads "0" an ideas?
I'm running no SMP's because an OC'd I7 can easily cast a shadow over fully loaded GTX295 in the amount of outlet yummyness
But when I tried it it worked with 2 easily
Something I've been meaning to ask for a while now.....What is the correct way to close down SMP (console) so that when you re-start you don't get the "improper termination" warning?
If you ask at F@H they will tell you Ctrl+C. Hahahahah!!! That always produces errors. And that's why I always run the -forceasm flag so it doesn't check previous shutdown. Others say reboot to shut down. That also causes me to lose some WUs. Basically it's a roll of the dice and a quick prayer anytime you shut down an SMP be it Windows or Linux. :ROTF::ROTF::ROTF: I wish I had a better answer but that's been my experience. I lost 10-12 smps during the race from shutdown/ restart problems.
Yeah they are such bad people eh ;)
Ctrl+c it is, and more importantly, if you had the issues, check taskman and make sure all fahcore_xx.exe are closed ( give it a minute tops to finish off, then manually close them if their not behaving ). Been a long time since I lost a wu on windows, and those who did, well some project's/clients/core's have checkpoint resume errors not related in any way to how you close the client. Like 590x for instance ( no, it doesn't mean any restart will produce an error, but the chanches are higher then normall ).
Never lost a smp wu on a vm with nf, but that's because I suspend the vm's not exit them, might be a good suggestion for your vm's as well. Also saves you the trouble of using usb sticks for checkpoint storage so it's win-win.
Seems I made a good decission btw, thanks for the laugh :poke: :(
Not just me then. I always have trouble after ctrl-c....could be my setup but for example I had an SMP due to finish around 4am (local= 2 hours to end of race) on the last day of the race so I shut down the other one once it completed using ctrl-c and doing so stopped the first one too. so on restart the one I closed on purpose started fine the one I was trying to give more cycles to failed to find the checkpoint and started anew
The safest way for me so far is restart windows. ....go figure
++1
While not fool proof 100%, I rarely lose work when I use the windows shutdown technique and -forceasm.
FWIW, when I restart, I allow the first SMP instance to get fully working before I start the next. This seems to prevent problems with the occasionally buggy MPICH.
ME2....
I've played with cntrl-c and letting all the fahcore_11 instances die on their own in taskmgr before restarting, and 95% of the time I get "missing work files" and trashed wu on client restart.. windows restart works perfectly 95% of the time and the smp client starts right where it left off... when I was folding in XP, I didn't have as big of a problem, and cntrl-c worked a little better. but with vista cntrl-c kills it everytime almost.
I stopped using SMP since it requires a stable internet connection and mine is hardly stable for more than a day or two. Aside from that, I've had no issues with it in XP or Vista.
I signed up although Im not going to have this laptop for long and am going to have an actual rig. My parents said i had to give them my laptop to build a desktop so how long do you think that took me to answer. I will also have in my possession my old Pentium III and matrox 500 box back soon and will make that a 24/7 folding box that i can add a third 120mb SD memory stick to. i should probably also do a fresh install of XP. But i know my dad wont let me do that. I am folding as =SOC=_Phenom_II. Do you think that the Pentium III will do fine.
you guys all helped me before when I was getting started. I'm now ready to continue. I need some help though.
I have Fahmon, I have systray GPUv2 might be a beta.. I don't know. it was whatever you guys suggested back a few months ago. and I also have downloaded then win 32 F@H6.22 Beta 2 SMP.. but I never installed that.
So, basically I now have SLI 260's. and I also have Water cooling. So I'm ready to start folding a little harder, and my system is much quieter now. so I can deal with it.
Basically do I need to get some newer versions of a GPU client. is there a good one other than system tray, or is that still the best way to fold. Also I now have SLI 260's. so do I need to run 2 clients of the sys tray GPU thing, or will it see the 2 cards and do it for me?? I have no clue how any of this works.
Also, when overclocking my cards, the only thing that matters for F@H is shaders right, so leave the core clocks on stock 576, but go ahead and Crank the Shaders to 1520+ whatever's stable. and leave mem on stock as well??
let me know guys. Also I have my quad at 4.0 Ghz. should I run a SMP along with my GPU.. or is 260's in SLI enough to pump some decent points? Whats the best way to do this with my system?????
here's the guide I used when I went multi gpu http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=568770
The pentium III may pull more power than it is worth running. That's your call. Don't expect big numbers from it, if I remember correctly the highest work I got out of my old PIII a while ago was like 60 PPD. So it is your call on whether the electric usage is worth it or not to you.
So I'm confused a little, looking at your avatar then looking at your folding username, what system you going for?
Well what i want is for it to do just a bit more before i completely retire the thing. I know my ppd wont be good it an ancient slot processor. But hell it might as well do something while it sits there gathering dust. Come on live for 1 more year and became 12 years old.
it's a waste of electricity. Really. Take that thing out back and put it to rest. Then put that i7 to FOLDIN'! :yepp:
Question:
What is the diffrence between a PS3 work unit sized of 100k-1.2 million, a GPU work unit of 10k-15k, and a CPU work unit of 1k-1.5k? Are they all the same work units (in size) or are PS3 work units wayyy bigger than CPU work units?
My 9800GTX+ is folding (as far as work units go) about 10 times faster than my Q9300, its done 5 in the time my Q9300 went from 50%-95%, im wondering if its tackling the same dificulty of work unit
Is there a way to set a ps3 to run for our team or does it just run under anonymous or something? also can it be run under my user name? Thanks
I know it can be set, I'm just not sure exactly how. Maybe the PS3 faq might help?
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3
There is a setting someplace..
Well I am building a system come very soon. The deal my parents made with me is that when i build i give them my laptop. How long do you think it took me to answer that question?
Components:
Case: Antec 1200
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA790FXT-UD5P AM3 DDR3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Mushkin DDR3 1333
Graphics card: XFX ATI HD Radeon 4870
Wireless card: EDIMAX EW-7728In 32bit PCI Wireless 802.11n Draft 2.0 PCI Card
Monitor: Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
PSU: Corsair 750TX
HDD: Seagate 7200.10 250GB (i prefer western digital)
I was thinking of either getting another 4870 later or a 4850 or even a 4890 for either Crossfire or have one as a dedicated folder.
That's a nice looking build, Admiral.
As I'm sure you've read, you'll get better folding power out of nvidia GPUs...you may want to go that route instead.
Im also only looking at only running the P3 till December and then building an Intel Core2 Quad XFX 260 BE system for gaming and dedicated 24/7 folding box. the build above is mostly for gaming on the cheap. although it does cost over $1000.
I haven't looked around here for awhile, did the whole problem with ATI cards not using their full potential get fixed yet? I'm looking at a new card for my SFF, and ATI really looks nice for the amount of money I'll spend...
My 4870 averages about the same as the 8800GS/9600GSO, but some of the new work units out there (that are scarce atm) I get 4000+ PPD out of. I want more of them. Still mostly 2700-3500 PPD units out there currently however.
Damn it, it went out of stop but this might be my other option if i decide to go nvidia. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130443
EVGA 260 SSC for the price of a 4870 hmm im goona have to think.
TBH it doesn't matter what card you have, if you fold, nvidia is the way if you play games, who cares if one has 67 FPS and the second one 59, you wont notice a thing , i went for nVidia because of folding. with the new 5900 core I have 10K on one VGA, something a ATI can dream about.
Thanks I will take a look. I was messing around with it last week and couldnt change the channel. It would only go to the channel with the Earth on it; But I dont know what I am doing either. That will be great to get the PS3 going once I get it figured out.
Do you have your 4879 overclocked at all? I have never oc's a gpu and have both my 4850 and 4830 oc'd through the CCC. but I have recently read that the shaders is what makes all the difference, but dont know how to oc the shaders or if its even possible on ati cards.
I think I am currently getting around 2.5-3.5K PPD per card. a little better performance from the 4850 but not much.
ATI cards don't have a separate shader clock per se. Use the core clock. I did overclock it a little but CCC only allows up to 790 max, boo. I need to use something else to OC but I just haven't messed with it.
thanks. I know what you mean; doesnt add much. I have both cards maxed out using the CCC. Better than nothing. I dont game though, thought it would help for folding. I was also thinking about it; between both my 4850 and 4830, I get a total of 4-5k PPD roughly I think. So my original post was a little off.
Bad thing is 2nd system is P45 so can either run both ati cards in that machine which is probably better than buying 1 new Nvidia card and trying to sell these; not sure. For my I7 I want to try and find 3-4 decent priced Nvidia cards that will provide good PPD per card.
I do need to power a 32", 26:, and 17" monitors though. will be replacing 17" with another 26". 32 & 26 run at 1080P res. so the cards for those need to be fairly decent. was thinking about a gtx 260 55nm card and maybe some used 9800gtx's or something. maybe some gx2's not sure yet. need to research more
@coo-coo; thanks. I finally figured it out. Now have my PS3 folding for us and getting my points! this will help me get into the top100 too! I am currently @ 101, but only moments away from hitting 100. I am making steady progress but would love to switch to Nvidia to double or triple my PPD. overal plan is to run 6-8 gpus between 2 I7 rigs and 1 or gx2 on my P45 rig. Hopefully will be able to get everything together by summer, lol
I luv this forum...
Now that's funny....:rofl::ROTF::ROTF::rofl::ROTF::rofl::ROTF ::up:
Was going to ask in separate thread but you guys here seem to have tried lots of stuff so...... Long cables for monitors keyboards usb etc are there any rules or sources you guys know about? I'm thinking of a sort of kvm setup with one machine in another room.....Thoughts anyone?
OldChap
A kvm setup is not really needed you should be able to do everything you need by VNC remote desktop over the Lan and network connection with the exception of editing the bios setup.
However if you really need a cable connection you might check out the cables at www.cablestogo.com I got a vga KVM cable setup for work several years ago from them since the computer is located in the back office and the monitor keyboard and mouse were needed to be located in the front office and they work fine for us with Win98 and WinXP.
Thanks....I think....Let me dig around for more on VNC 'cos in stuff like this I'm a total noob. Cables would work really well for work though
Ok im offically switching to Xtreme Systems. That should be good for another 8,000 points a day
You better watch out! This :banana::banana::banana: gets addicting. 8000 PPD won't cut it for the top rung of the team. I started at 5KPD when the PPD used to be higher and now am doing 40KPD with the worse PPD per WU.
What I find amazing is my normal output per day (not my current, post-spring-break slump) is over half of what the ENTIRE team used to make a couple years ago. People like WFO are making 2-3x as much as the team used to make. The team, as a whole, is making a whopping 24 times MORE now a day than it did a couple years ago. That's HUGE guys.
when did the folding@home team XS start? How long have you been in the top 100?
I ended up buying a XFX GTX285, i plan to hold onto it for a loooonng time. Ill SLI it within the year. Its going to be a WHILE before two GTX285's arnt enough, like at least 5 years
Newbie question about the stats @ ExtremeOC: why is it that the 12pm stats update rarely yields any points? It's pretty consistent each day that there is little or no updates during that time period. It's almost as if the stats take a lunch break ;)
Could be a server bug perhaps. Or like you said, out to lunch :lol2:
I really don't know, never noticed before!
joined the team
welcome to the team be warned its a addiction once you start.
Welcome annihilus, thanks for helping...Tell your companion to beware of Riptide, he likes those kind of animals...:rofl::rofl:
now you got him all exited :rofl::rofl:

does anyone know what it means when you call a GPU "Vanilla"?
From wiki
Vanilla is also commonly used to mean "plain" or "conventional," derived from the use of vanilla extract as the most popular flavoring for ice cream.
Vanilla option, in finance, a "simple" or well understood option
Vanilla sex, a term referring to what a society regards as standard or conventional human sexual behavior
Vanilla software, referring to software that is used "as delivered"
nilla was a good overclocker my first nilla was an old TI 200 made by gainsward wow i paid alot for that card when it first came out in fact im looking at it right now lol.
means factory stock setting not oced .
Those of you with a K9A2 platinum...I need help!!
The clear cmos jumper is not fitted ...I cannot determine which is pin1. Where should the jumper be? nearest the cpu and centre or furthest from cpu and centre?
so vanilla = stock.
Im not getting a nilla 285, i got a 670mhz XFX 285 im about to buy.....still waiting for newegg to give me a refund
----
As you can see below, no 285 has resulted in some crappy folding recently
yup it is gts if its used to in terms of hard ware like vid cards some call them
plain janes .
Hi all!
I just started yesterday. Currently just using my GTX280 while I learned how to add my 8800gt and quad Phenom II 720 to the task as well.
Its fun to do this...but lets see how the energy bill reacts to it. :-)
Welcome to the team your set up should do all right on the electricity side
of it , but folding can be a addiction you will be wanting to add more.
you have been warned lol.
Hey guys I just joined, I work for a IT job and I have access to 100's of computers. I have a Mac Mini with a duo core in it trying to get it to work correct. Not sure if i set it up correctly. I can't see my name in the stats, not even sure if it's running. Here is the the info I'm getting, anything I should or need to change. It's for a Mac with 10.5.6 2ghz core 2 duo and 2 gb of ram. I never use this mac, just to help users with Mac problems.

^^^ I cannot not help with your issue, But I would like to :welcome: the 2 new guys to the team...
Im back up an running. The new 285 still whines but only when folding. So in other words, 24/7. It doesnt sound as bad as the last one. Ill have to see how well i deal with the ringing, ill try a few days and if i cant sleep/deal with it ill just have to stop folding :(
Hey GT you might like to read this:
http://theovalich.wordpress.com/2008...280-squealing/
Now you know why they call them farms, pig farms that is:rofl:
Yea i saw that, im a bit nervous about dumping nail polish on my new card. Itll void the warrenty and all..
The noise isnt as bad as it was on my last card, and it seems to be quiet at 648 mhz, and gets alot louder if i under or overclock it. Ill most likly be able to deal with it and keep folding
Now i just have to learn to live in this room with my computer is generating this much heat.
Anyone help with me a MAC OS setup for folding?
I am pretty sure the finstall script also works for Mac OS X here is a link to that and there is also a good OS X section on the Stanford Folding forum you might check out for additional help with MAC OS X folding setup.

is 6500ppd normal for a 285? thats about what mines averaging
I'm now folding on my Mac. I joined team 36362
24/7 folding on the mac i never use, will try to setup more pc's around work not doing anything
Im folder under quaddamage
can someone link me to my stats
GTS are you using fahmon if not its a good tool and it will benchmark your PPD
and give you eta times its a good program to run and it does a lot more things
than just benchmark give it a try if you dont have it.
Have y'all ever had your PPDs look totally out of whack?
I had to reboot one of my rigs yesterday due to 2 FAH processes not being able to come out of EUE state and after reboot, the PPD rates about about 60% of what they should be. Checked all my shaders and core/mem clocks and they are fine, just the calculated PPD rates are quite low. It might be that I need the current WUs to finish and then the next set will be normal.
i had some thing similar happen i was in windows 7 and needed to reboot and i lost wu from gpu 1 gpu2 gpu3 i stopped it and went back to ubuntu and wine
i put the win7 on the media center up stairs all is good now. im not sure what caused it.
just got this SMP warning "warning long 1-4 interactions" or somthing like that, and it stopped folding, core activity was up and down randomly
now SMP doesnt work :(
Anyone tried the 9.5 Catalyst yet? Any improvements for 4870X2's? It'a about time...
found this, hope it helps.http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1419852
Wow, nice. This seems to work well on my HD4870X2 (used the parameters from post #1). Only running on GPU core #1 for now, CCC shows 99% GPU load, taskmanager assigns 2-3% of one HT core of my i7 to the FAH client (equals 1-2% w/o HT). Now we'll see about the PPD... Thanks mate!
http://database.he-computer.de/Bilder/temp/FAH.jpg
Edit: Works with 2 GPUs as well. Only that PPD rates still suck in comparison to NV cards... FAHmon gives 5200 PPD for both cards, at the beginning of the WUs, so maybe 5500-5600 total.
I am now using Win Server 08, Catalyst 9,4, the dll tweaks fromt he link masska posted, and the following parameters: -verbosity 9 -gpu 0/1 -forcegpu ati_r700
Am I missing anything to further improve performance? Thanks!

That was GPU 0. Either it didnt like that I was gaming while folding, or I need to adjust FLUSH_Interval to a lower setting.. maybe 64 instead of 96?
Well, it seems it didn't like me running a game while folding... seems pretty stable now.
So, where is folding with ATI cards at?
+ low CPU utilization
+ works without vga dummies or similar crap
+ PPD have somewhat improved
- still lower PPD than NV cards compared their processing power
- still a PITA to setup, FAH should really try and learn to get more simple like integrating into BOINC (see GPUGrid, for example)
- clients crash when folding and playing a game at the same time (?)

What's up with the 0 update @ 9PM then a huge catchup the next update?
Been happening a lot lately!
I had my ATI 4850 running fine for a few days then started the same crap all over again. I am really getting tired of trying to figure it out. It isn't just GPU errors. I am actually tired of even talking about it.
Anybody know whats up this this SMP error? Im not sure what it is/ or how to fix it (already did a re-install)

Hi y'all ... I am a WCG crossover ... what's the best set up for me to both crunch and fold with the rig in my sig?
Hey,
just read through the dual GPU set up guides I guess.. giving your GPU client higher than normal priority is important I guess, it should only use a few % of the CPU to tend to the GPUs.. with Nvidia and Multi GPU you may need to extend your desktop to your 2nd GPU, either using a real monitor or a vga dummy plug, but I'll leave that to someone else to explain, since it works w/o on my 4870X2 (just that you'll get 2x as many points with your NV card :p: )
