New areca 1880 beta firmware
2011/10/17 Released
ftp://ftp.areca.com.tw/RaidCards/BIO...a/Build110802/
Does it fix Crucial m4 009 firmware problem? Maybe Areca found a fix? I will install beta driver very soon :)
I'm still waiting on the fix as well since I'd like to flash the latest and get some more "umph" out of these.
looking like there is no timeline on this, but they are definitely looking at it!
ok so now i have the same issue LOL. I will be working on another review for LSI shortly, and also with Areca, so i will see what kind of assistance i can get on this issue. Big thanks to Crucial/Micron for providing this array(C400 256 X 8), as it complements the C300 array in the expander nicely, now all we need is the fix! I will get with Crucial as well and see what happens.
http://i517.photobucket.com/albums/u...1/DSCF6434.jpg
No news on that RAID firmware issue? Did you guys hear about a solution coming soon?
Alright guys, I am in direct contact with Quality Assurance at Micron, so things should move along quickly :)
Thanks, I am getting nowhere with emails now. I will try calling tomorrow, again.
Has anyone been using the betas since this past summer? Every one (this most recent one included) seems to have issues with the system hanging with the busy light flashing constantly. If the system is power cycled it will just sit at the boot load screen (spinning windows flower) forever. Seems to happen with certain advanced settings only available in these beta releases.
I guess this is why they are still beta. ;)
I've been using the official fw (released end of 2010) until just resently.
I've had zero issues on the latest beta, I have not had the time to check out all the new settings though.
The m4 fw 0009 does not work on either of those and will result in the controller not booting.
(they do work for testing purposes if attached after having booted, not really a workable solution at all)
Do you guys think there is a real chance that we could end up using the M4 in a Raid system or should I look into buying other SSDs for building my RAID?
If the answer is no then would you have any advice onto which SSD to buy for that purpose?
Thanks for your advice,
Arnaud
Bump
Nobody? No news from crucial? Are we stucked with firmware 09 being not compatible with the Areca card? Any hope? Any alternative?
Thanks,
Arnaud
As an alternative I'm thinking of going with 8 OCZ Vertex 3 120Go.
Anybody has validated this configuration with the Areca 1880i?
Thanks
Arnaud
@ kiko - Looks like a fix might be coming, how long - hard to say - see CT's post #70 @ http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=1#post4992617
Thanks Steve, yeah it does not look too good... since I'm needing to implement an SSD Raid with my Areca 1880i in the next few days I guess I'll have to use the Vertex instead, bummer...
careful with those, the SF do not tend to scale as well imo, but that may be due to inconsistent performance overall, especially with different datasets.I know when ive done uber raids with SF beasts they are very inconsistent as a whole. wild swings in performance, tons of variability. and that is running the same bench repeatedly! they seem to be affected by 'background' ops more when under stressful testing, maybe its jsut with arrays? just an observation.Quote:
8 OCZ Vertex 3 120Go.
i wouldnt use them for benching. samsung or M4 right now. no eta on m4 fix, but will shoot email to crucial today.
gah steve, i would really hate to put it down to picking a specific one, as i would hate it if you didnt get the desired results. I have a hard time recommending gear i haven't had in my own hands... samsung needs to send me an array to test LOL.
Just performance with the incompressible is the thing. and with the Octane (JetStream) headed out...supposed to be a sequential monster, but killer at low QD. dunno why im mentioning that, but it does muddy the water. maybe its my affinity for old school idilinx that served me well for years but...they might bear some scrutiny.
the M4 but not sure of the wait. I dont know if it will be issued as a bugfix, or rolled into a firmware, if the later is the case, there could be a wait.
guess that means im on the fence!
Wait a few? more days for the Intel 520.
It's not space I need but speed, in the 1000mB/s range for 5k video work.
Not sure if the Intel 520 will be available that quickly in France and in a similar price range as the M4 or Vertex 3.
Thanks for the feedback on the Vertex 3 though. I'm now curious as to which alternative already available I could go for if the Vertex is not a good candidate. Could not find a precise reference for the Samsung you mentioned. Is it a SAS drive?
The Samsung mentioned is the new 830, availability is sparse but should be getting better shortly.
(The Samsung 830 is SATA 6Gb/s)
Bump:
Any news for m4 fix?
I need the fix NOW! or many weeks ago :p
Received this is today's mail, may be the Areca/LSI issue after all!
email going out to Areca as we speak :)Quote:
Paul,
We continued to see no problems in our lab. At the end of last week, however, I got the following message from my contact at Areca:
Our engineer said ARC-1880i will perform the same as ARC-1880x for the issue. Thus, you should be able to duplicate the problem by using ARC-1880i with the procedure mentioned before.
However, LSI released a new PL microde, version, 11.0.1.0, which solve the compatible problem with M4. I've attached it for your reference. You may want to update your card for further testing.
So, Micron is taking no further action in this matter. We may do some validation activities on the side as a low priority action, but we continue to believe that the C400 is properly following the SATA specification.
Best regards,
I am glad that a fix is finally on the way! How do we update the PL microcode? Is it done through the web interface?
good news! :)
Alrighty, of course these things happen when i am away from home and cannot test...so...razor-nizzen YHPM :)
Yes me too, amazing news!
But does that mean we get to install a new firmware for the Areca 1880i?
I could not find any information on this, does somebody has a link?
Can you confirm that the M4s are really working in RAID0 with the Areca 1880i?
Thanks
Thanks, but no luck here. It still hangs during boot. Doing the unplug all the drives then plug them back in one at a time trick still works. It is getting really annoying, though.
Tired of waiting for M4 to work properly with 1880. Now 4xM4 is connected to IBM 1015, and Areca going to have 4xsamsung 830 for OS. The upside is more writespeed on the OS array :)
Yes this wait really sucks, I'm also about to buy 8 Samsung 830 but they are about 30e more expensive than the M4 here in France...
Anybody seen the Intel 520 out yet? Or even better tested them with the Areca?
I hate this bug, I have pretty much stopped using my main machine because it takes forever to get it to boot.
It is very distressing, i agree. I have some M4s laying around i would love to play with...last i heard they do have a fix for the non-expander versions of the card, which i have tested with the 1882 and it works.
For the versions with the expander, they are having issues seeing what is wrong "behind" the integrated expander when doing their tests.
Just a headsup:
Almost new driver: arcs64_V6.20.00.22_111006_WHQL.zip (17.11.2011) That is not often!
ftp://ftp.areca.com.tw/RaidCards/AP_...4Bit/storport/
Still waiting for a fix for M4 :(
Compu, I still haven't gotten around to trying the fix you gave me. My rig is still in pieces, but I should be back in business by mid next week. By the way, have you figured out how to put that command in? Do I need to use the serial port on the card? I assumed so, but I have never messed with that part of the card. Can I telnet/ssh into it?
nope, been busy with various projects tbh. I will be getting around to that soon though. Not sure if they have a preboot CLI with Areca, but i will find out.
Could you do a test with the M4's on the 9265 if you've still got it?
My 0002 drives work OK but the upgraded ones (0009) aren't detected at start-up, they sometimes are detected when inserted while monitoring in MSM.
This is getting pretty sad, I do like the M4's but I was planning on using them on a raid controller...
ok here is the deal, they are saying that the timeout can fix it,
but it has to be done from CLI, which i am not familiar with. I will forward you an email so you can test
Quote:
It seems that new Pl microcode code can solve the issue from the directly attach.
But it needs to change the spin up time on the SAS expander to solve it.
Could you use the CLI command to change the Spin up time from 1024ms to 128ms to see the result?
Drive SpinUp Control spin Delay(D)[ms] Num(D)
MegaCli -AdpSetProp SpinupDelay -val -a0
-val = not sure on what the measurement is for val, ms ?
Hope this helps
Grrr, Ignore this, double post, site seems really slow today
no, absolutely no idea tbh. but they use the same roc...dont know.Quote:
and you are quite sure that this would work on the LSI 9265?
My 9265 has the exact same issue. I would not expect it to be detected on that card either.
it IS a microcode from LSI...
Come on guys do I have to do everything ;) to get current value of spinup:
MegaCli -AdpGetProp SpinupDelay -a0
The 9265 is just a 9260 with dual core ROC
It will work.
This can be used when the card boots and you press CTRL+Y at the LSI BIOS splash screen, just remove the 'Megacli' for each command.
MegaCLI for DOS also works
For some reason Megacli for Win7 doesn't see my IBM M5015, can't quite work this out.
Can you make a step by step guide for Areca 1880 users?
Regards from a noob :)
I'm using 4x 64gb m4 in raid0 on 9260-4i on intel x58 most times it boots fine but every so often I will get the lsi beep of death during post and the only way to clear is to press F or some key (I forget) but its like it will only show 2 out of 4 disks and finally it will work. Is this what Anvil is talking about? Anvil didnt you mention in your thread about the Anvil bench you changed the spinup delay? how exactly does spinup delay effect ssds? I never messed with it because I'm not using spinup drives. they are solid state. cant you just set it to 0 for ssds? what the hell is spinup delay? anvil what is your mobo? sorry I just noticed this is a 1880 thread. good luck with that. I can only imagine the frustration of investing hard earned money on an 1880 and not getting it to play nice.
The m4's works just fine, as long as they are on the old firmware.
Unfortunately I've upgraded half of my drives to 0009 :), I'll wait for a fix, the (0009) m4's are currently used as boot drives on onboard-controllers
Well, cross your fingers, but I have successfully booted on M4 0009 firmware drives 5 times from a cold boot. Getting that command in is not for the feint of heart! You need to hook up to the RJ-11 port on the card and use Putty to get into the CLI. You also need the set the speed to 115200 and the flow control to XON/XOFF. Then you should be able to see the CLI. Log in with the password you set. Once in type exactly this command (no mistakes, backspaces will break the command): spin 128 8
128 is the number of milliseconds to wait before the card spins another drive and the 8 is the number of drives you have. If you have more drives, up this number to match. Then type: st
You can make sure the command worked by typing spin in the console once more, and it should show the correct 128ms spin time. Reboot system, enjoy life. Report back, if you have problems or questions. I would like to make sure this works for everyone so also let me know if you are successful. Easy, right? LOL
I bow before you :worship:
ok so lets make this understandable for us guys with no experince.
what is Putty? do you install this as a program or an OS?
this has to be on a separate machine?
can you give the actual command line that needs to be entered in putty?
what would i enter in for the 8 i am using?
can you please make some type of guide?
you da man!
Putty is an executable used to make various network connections. Here is where you can get it. It simply runs, no installation needed. You might have to Run as Administrator, if you leave that user account control garbage on.
O
nce you have opened it (and allowed it through windows firewall, if prompted) you will have a screen asking you to set up the connection. Select Serial, make sure the COM port listed is the same as the COM port your computer has set for Serial, and change the speed to 115200. Make sure the computer is on (booting/in BIOS is fine if you are using a second machine to connect) and select Open. If you hit enter once, it should ask you for a password (spelled pasword, LOL!). Type in the password you have set, and you are in. The commands should look exactly as follows, with the exception of the last parameter on the spin command. It should always be equal to or greater than the number of drives you have. Here you go:
spin 128 8
spin
st
Reboot you machine after all the commands work. Be SUPER careful with syntax. If you mess up, DO NOT ENTER THE "st" COMMAND!!! Just try the spin 128 8(or 12 or whatever) command again until the output is correct or reboot to clear. That's all folks! Make sure you have the latest firmware and all, and you should be good. Compu, you should contact Areca and let them know that they have fixed it, as far as I can tell.
Putty is a very useful app for devices with serial connections to allow Firmware updates or also getting debug info from it.
I use it quite a bit in my Satellite receiver (Linux box) firmware mods.
It can be a little tricky to setup sometimes.
Often you need a USB to serial adaptor for it to work
Do you need a USB to RJ11 converter for the Areca if you have no serial port ?
Areca must use the serial connection for what Razor_Blade has just done.
LSI and other OEM versions of SAS2x08 cards also have a serial header. (TPM)
This may also work on them.
If I can find an old serial cable could attempt to solder up a header to try.
The RJ11 cable came with mine, I just used a USB-Serial cable I had to hook it up.
Sounds a bit like a magic - but what is the exact version of the controller and firmware which you tested it on?
Should the first param after spin still be 128 if I have mix of 4 SSDs (M4 w/009 fw) and 12 regular HD (of 2 different kinds)?
And 2nd param - should it be 16 in this case or smth else?
Happy New Year!
I used the latest firmware from Areca's site, and I have a 1880ix-12 with 4GB of cache. I am not sure about if I can release the one of the firmwares I was using to accomplish this, but If you PM Computurd, he should be able to get it for you. Honestly, we ought to just let Areca know that the solution is working, and they can get it releases in non-alpha form. I am not even sure if the firmware is required, the command might be enough.
As for your drive configuration, I have no idea what to tell you there. I would suspect that with 8 spinning disks, having them all spin up that fast would be a bad idea for your power supply, but there isn't a setting to change it for individual drive groups. I would try "spin 128 4" if the SSD's are the first drives. You could try "spin 128 16" and see if it works. If it doesn't, you can always go back to the default by typing "spin 1024 1", I think. The document I used to get the command is not very specific on how it works and it's uses.
Do you have a list of commands that can be used to access hidden settings?
Ok just to be clear, is this problem we've been waiting to be fixed only affecting the booting on a RAID volume made of M4s?
Meaning if I just want to use a RAID 0 with Areca 1880 and that IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE A BOOT VOLUME then there won't be any issue for me?
Cause sincerely having to mess up with all these CLI stuff is not making me to want to buy the M4s for my 1880...
And happy new year all!
As long as the M4s are connected to the controller you will have issues booting. (it stalls)
If you haven't bought the M4 drives yet, I wouldn't. In my case, setting the drive spin up the way I did is fine, because I have only M4's connected to it. I have no clue what that setting is going to do to arrays with normal drives in it. My guess is that it would put a TON of load on your 12v rail. If you have a really beefy PSU, you could probably get away with it, but it seems risky. Just use a different drive. The Samsung's are looking good or Sandforce, since it isn't your boot drive (just keep backups. lol).
I would prefer Corsair Performance Pro for the 1880.
My setting is currently: 4 x 256gb Corsair Performance Pro RAID0 @ Areca 1880
Works perfectly.
Very Strange: With a new Adaptec SFF8087 6G cable, I get a slightly higher transfer rate than with an older LSI cable.
How hard is it for Crucial or/and Areca to fix the M4 issue in a firmware?
M4 was the winner, now it is epic fail and thrown in the garbage can. Even OCZ works better with Areca
4x Max iops it is now together with many Hitachi 3tb R6. Works well enough.
Lets hope the fix is part of the new m4 firmware expected to be released next week.
Ok, still giving the M4 a last chance waiting to see if this new firmware fixes the issue. Anybody got to test it yet?
Yes, it does, but make sure that the second number matches the number of drives you are using.

But I can not find it on Areca FTP. Only 1882 1.50 exist.
Where can i download it?
If you say A, then you have to say B ;)
As of yesterday Areca still believes the culprit to be the M4 FW and thus dont plan on addressing it in any revised controller firmware, or so it seems. And while going into console and changing spinup values may appear to fix the problem, nonetheless still seems like a bandaid fix which may not be ideal, at least if you also have spinning disks attached since its a global setting.
"the 1.50 firmware do not fix the M4 issue, it is a SSD firmware problem which we do not able to fixed it by our firmware."
I wouldn't go throwing the baby out with the bathwater just yet though. The M4's are still kick-ass drives and Areca controllers are still tops to me even after running a 9265 side-by-side with my Areca's for six months.

I'll wait for the final fix, I think.
With the exception of a few benchmarks most of my m4's have more or less just collected dust.
I sold all my M4, so I do not care anymore :D hehe
lol nizzen. you should have sold them to me for half price :)
1.50 FW for 1880 has been released today!
http://www.areca.us/support/download...re/ARC1880.zip
I downloaded the fw and it's dated in January, meaning it could have been released months ago.
Will try updating during the Easter holidays.
Thanks, good to know!
Hey guys, I'm trying to update my Areca 1880i to 1.50 using their nflash DOS utility. When I try to select a file to update from, it gives me the error of "FILE ARC1880*BOOT.BIN Not Exits". I can see the file in the directory with >dir, this is getting frustrating! Any help appreciated.
ive always just used the GUI personally :) not sure of this issue.
in the past if i have forgotten to unzip the FW i will have issues of course, but that is surely not the issue here.
I'll just use the GUI, then.
success? i hope so, i havent had time to play with the new FW yet and hope it works well, as i am assembling a server :)
Yep, updating was a breeze through the HTML management GUI.
SO, Do these B*tches work with the M4's yet?
