Speak of the Devil! I just ordered one openbox. It was way too good of a deal to pass up. :hehe:
I'll run it stock and report temps & scores.
Besides MSI afterburner, Kombustor and 3dmark, what other benches should I run?

playing around with mine tonight. Need more volts I think then I can go a bit more on core and get stable in 3dmark. So far i love this card. EK waterblock btw.

I have seen lot of instructions on how to get up to 1.21 vcore on gpu, but how is it possible to have more voltage?
In a post i read that with a particular version of msi ab it is possible ot get up to 1.5volt.
Is it possible without any hardmod or any bios update?
Did anyone with an ek backplate on gtx 480 have shortening problems?
Just been testing new set up! Up to now! Still gotta get more out of mem and cpu core!

Here is mine.
Afterburner is broken (confirmed my MSI official on support forum ). They better fix it soon, or I will need to flash the bios. But would be better to have triple voltage control which should have been working for this twin frozr II with afterburner 2.0
Here is it benched at max the nv inspector can feed.

How is afterburner broken ? in what way ?
Afterburner 2.0.0 has a bug.
It detects Twin Frozr II as Twin frozr II Power edition which is due to database error in this version (Power edition is unreleased card according to MSI rep. ).
And as its a mismatch it disables the voltage control completely even after checking the option in settings.
With afterburner 1.6 you have same NVAPI limit of 1.087v and not full control as this card should have. Fantastic cooling but its let down by the broken piece of software. I hope MSI fixes this bug. Would love to have complete core voltage control.
Just tried my GTX480 (30,179 3DMark06 Score) and it beats my HD5870 (28,720).
I see from some of these screenies I may be able to push the core on the VGU.

Welll i have for a week a PNY gtx480 i really like it, but i realiza that my am3 platform is kind of making bottleneck because i don´t think that with that clocks i am going to get 18k vantage score, cpu score at almost ground FlooR :(
Hope to try it later on p55 and x58 to make a performance scaling

I finely got my water cooling loop installed and am ready to start overclocking my EVGA GTX480! Which route is the preferred method, flash a BIOS adjusted to allow for upto 1.21 volts, or edit the BIOS settings for max value of 1.21V? Having just flashed my mobo BIOS for the first time yesterday I am an extreme noob when it comes to editing, making changes and flashing a video cards BIOS! I am not affraid just lack the know how to do it, please enlighten me (step by step) on how best to allow for 1.21V! Thanks
-Systemlord
Both my GPU's suck at OC. And plus I only get 30k on 3dMark 06 for some stupid reason. I can reach 850 2100 max with max voltage in AB. VID 1.075 and 1.063
Sorry for the older quote on a post many months old, but I need to know if this attachment which has been removed (GTX480_vt_Smolka_v1.zip) is in fact a complete unlocked BIOS to allow 1.21V for the GTX480. If so is all I have to do is flash my GTX480 with this BIOS ROM? I'm stuck at 870MHz core @ 1.138 volts.
Thanks, Systemlord.
Little late to the party. Now got my SLI 470s watercooled.

Hmm something not quit right with your vantage score maybe you had physX off which might explain it.
I'm getting in the 25000 range physX on with lesser clocks GPU and CPU.

Has anyone noticed a buzzing/zapping sound coming from the six long and skinny chokes on graphical strain? I get it with OC Scanner but not with OCCT, my GTX480 OC is 890MHz core and 4400MHz memory. After I get this buzzing sound sorted out I will increase my vcore upto 1.213 volts.

Guys i have question to you ... i have brand new asus gtx470, product code: ENGTX470/2DI/1280MD5/V2 <- and that is a problem ( second card is ENGTX470/2DI/1280MD5 and she is goin 880+ on gpu without any blackscreens ) ... when i want push higher clocks 750+ a have blackscreen. Anybody knows what can be wrong with this card ?
Not every card is going to OC the same even if their newer version, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. Do we know what V2 mean/relates to and how these card differ from one another? My 480 seems walled at 850MHz core, the memory (4200MHz) is another story in progress.
-Systemlord
AM3 can do real nice scores, if the settings are good...
http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/firestorm/global.jpg
Run it without Phyx just for curiosity.
This watercooled or still on air malik?
Sounds like ocp kicking in. Do the black screens happen at lower clockspeeds if you up the gpu volts? If not that probably rules out OCP as the issue.
My MSI was very similar - 783 on air and black/grey/pink screens under load. Maxes on water at 860. on air 783/1188mv tripped the screens, on water its over 860 @ 1137mv or higher.
Yeah try upping the volts and see if the freeze happens sooner. If it does its over current protection, if not its something else.
Could also try dropping the memory overclock. Memory oc goes down drastically at 80c+ gpu temp on both my cards.
OCP seems really variable on the 470's.
The 480 you can pencil mod to sort it. Are the 470 mods on vrzone?
Added a little juice.
Runs Great
PhysX = off
Hi Guys,
As the title states, They have no stock of the asus here in Hong Kong and the selling is offering to me an evga. Both cards are reference models.
Thanks for your help.
Hodgy
Yes hodgy, you can run different vendor's 480's in SLI
I know, but if I understand @PiLsY correctly there is OCP pencil mod for GTX480 (that I can't find it on the net). I know for this OCP mod for GTX480.
Actually I'm interesting if there is vmem pencil mod for 480 like this one for 470 here.
OCP = over current protection.
My apologies I did indeed confuse the 470 vmem pencil mod with the 480 ocp mod. -1 cookie.
If you up the voltage applied to the gpu there is not more current flowing, but only more volts and since power is voltage*current more power(and more heat). So the assumption that more voltage should make the ocp kick in before is wrong. If a 1.21 your card crash sooner it is because when a card reach its limits increasing voltage beyond a certain point only worsen things. If there were an OPP (over power protection) then upping the voltage would make it kick in before but there is not such opp in gtx as far as i know so your symptoms don't show that the problekm comes from ocp but confirm that your card is a bad clocker.I'd avoid removing ocp on card.this protection is a saiour when there are current overloads
I got No OCP/No OVP BIOS for GTX480 from here somewhere @XS.
Also, CHL8266 No OCP Firmware. If anyone is interested PM me.
EDIT: Uploaded, so you can just DL: nVIDIA_GeForce_GTX480_NoOCP_NoOVP_BIOS.7z, CHL8266_No_OCP_Firmware.7z.

Hi everyone,
I am going to buy 2 GTX 480s. I found two different brands. One is Gigabyte and other one is Asus. Price difference between them is 56 dollars for each. Gigabytes price is the lower one. Both are brand new. Are there anything specific with Gigabyte's product quality? I never used a Gigabyte product before. Should I buy Gigabyte or just go with the Asus?
TheHardCase: Hi can you upload your vbios please i will really appreciate it
Some fun with my 470's:

thanks  i should be able to hit 900mhz? i would like to... i've tried some benchs @ 900mhz... like unigine... and it works.. but if i try 900mhz on 3dmark & co it will crash
i'm wondering wich voltage & memory settings i have to use for a full gaming use @ 900mhz ... :shakes:
Do any of you guys have some nice charts showing performance increase due to your overclock in a game setting, i.e. fps increase? At the moment I don't notice any game needing more frames, but if the difference is big enough, why not. :)

Why on earth would you waste your money on a GTX 580 when you already have a GTX 480 OC'ed to 900MHz/1800MHz/ 4000MHz? Paying $600 dollars for a (GTX 580) slight increase in performance is absolutely nuts! Your overclocked GTX 480 already equals a GTX 580 in performance.
-Systemlord
Its doesnt equal a 580 in performance a 580 is alot fastest! It gets around 30,000 Vantage score on the cpu! My 480 get 24000 Vantage cpu score! I was looking to sli my 480 but when the 580 came out i changed my mind! The 580 is alot better card! With people getting 1000 on the core!
I haven't seen a single 1000MHz overclock on air or water yet, and the performance gain isn't *THAT* higher when you overclock both cards to nearly the same clocks. There is a difference that favours the 580, but to justify the investment... i don't really think so?
1000Core 1200Mem!Here mate seen impressive!
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=262073
I wasn't talking about synthetic benchmarks but "real world" FPS ingame performance, mind you that you don't just have a standard overclocked GTX 480 but an above average overclock! "You won't see much of a performance difference in games between the two cards as that has already been proven by many review sites. You can choose to ignore those reviews if you wish.
http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-580-review/19
Quote:
"There's no reason to upgrade whatsoever. However if you're in the market for a pre-overclocked GTX 480 or this reference 580, then obviously the 580 must have your preference as that card at default is as fast as the standard overclocked GTX 480 cards".
Messed around setting up Afterburner profiles last night. My pc room was getting really quite hot after a couple of hours gaming at 1150mv 850/1950. My cards arent good clockers, average at best Vid 1000mv and 1050mv.
Ended up with the following 5 profiles in afterburner:
|..Vid...|Sli Clock..|MSI 1050mv|PNY 1000mv
0975mv|700/1800.|.705/1866..|.733/1810
1000mv|750/1800.|.750/1912..|.775/1805
1025mv|775/1850.|.780/1978..|.835/1866
1050mv|800/1850.|.805/2025..|.855/1860
1150mv|850/1950.|.850/2090..|.866/1966
Hope that table worked and the forum didnt bork it :p:.
Didnt lose as much clock going from single card to sli as I expected. I lost some 30mhz core and 50mhz mem going sli with gt200b. Shame my cards are so different. The PNY is good for core but doesnt scale past 1083mv, but sucks for memory yet scales right up to 1150mv. The MSI core sucks but scales all the way to 1150mv, yet the memory on it is awesome. Running clocks out of sync the best I can get in sli is 850/2025 | 860/1955 still at 1150mv both cards. Above 1150mv I get grey/brown screens from the msi. The PNY can take more but doesnt scale - clocks actually start going down above 1150mv.
Im running at the 975mv setting. I've lost no graphics details or noticed by eye any fps drops in my games, so happy days. It actually runs cooler than stock clocks stock vid too, so a winner all round.

I wouldn’t say a lot faster! A lot more efficient cooling. If your benching I would understand the upgrade, but for gamming what a waste of money.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4012/n...e-sli-update/3
Hodgy.
I would like to see some websites test the GTX 580 overclocked to 1000MHz and compare the results just to see how much more FPS you get for that huge overclock, I will admit that if your wanting to stay with air cooling for the time being the improved cooling and quieter fan is a big plus! People are hitting 975 ~ 1000MHz on air cooling, one can only imagine what a 28nm die shrink will bring!
I've installed an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus on my GTX 470 and the temps are quite low now! Before I had 70c idle (dual monitor) and 95c full load and now I have 35c idle (Dual monitor) and 55c full load.
I've noticed that in 260 branch drivers is not possible to downclock memory speeds to under 1250mhz x2, with 256 branch I was able to lower them to something like 200mhz, as that gives quite lower idle temps.
Also some display settings are borked like digital color format (RGB or YCbCr444) gives the same output.
So, I'm quite impressed. I jumped on that Microcenter i7 950 deal and my first pass in Vantage was unreal. Running an inexpensive evga refurb 3x SLI x58 with 12gb Corsair DDR3 1600. I simply set the BCLK to 150 and have my cards GPU Clock at 731 MHz - PhysX on in this run. I made the jump from a 1090T with 3-way GTX 470 and so far am very impressed.
