I had 80°C on the MCP (Sb to me) on first boot, I was already very happy the board booted with the E8400 and 4gig ram... shut it down, redid the heatpipe and repalced the TIM with Ceramique paste... beefy 6cm cooler on the NB and hurray next boot into the bios I got 40-45°C MCP value :)
as the evga board is reference will the XFX 780i be able to use the same bios as it's also reference???
Say I am running a 450 FSB, I am looking to run my ram linked 3:2 at 1200Mhz.
I am looking at these (Model PDC22G9600ELK) Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) PC2-9600 1200MHz PC2-9600 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit Memory, Timing 5-5-5-12
Will this 780i board be okay to run the ram at 2.3v?
How good is this ram?
hi every one just got my new rig boot and everything is installed(vista) and ive just tryed oc my q6600 go at 3ghz it boot but i cant finish my 3dmark and occt failed after 2mins so iver puted my voltage higuer(1.35)it was a 1.20 on auto and puted my 4gb g.skill 8000 at 1000mhz whit 2.1v and i still cant get it stable.....:( any advisse? by the way all other voltage are on auto and i changed nothing. cpu idle at 30 full load 67 and my nb at 50 is that normal?
Thanks sorry for my english im french:p:
Please could someone with this mobo, tell me how to do the Pencil mod to stableize Vcore on load?
What do you think you will gain in real time performance ? if you do benchmarks yes then you will notice an improvement in scores going from 1000 to 1200mhz ram... daily basis hardly worthwhile mate... have you tried if ya ballistix don't run 1200mhz 5-5-5-18 at 2.35 volts ? Test them and see if it is noticeable to you ... Hardly think so, but this is still Extremesystems isn't it...
Go to EVGA and view the 780i overclocking forum. Its on the first post if you look for it.
Its' not all that important to do though. Kind of a waste if you ask me. Besides risking dropping some lead/graphite in your board whats the sense. If you know you're getting vdroop then just account for that when you input your voltage in the bios. unless you're going over like 1.70 vcore. Then thats just stupid unless you're on LN2, good water or vapo.
Iam pretty sure just about everyone here will disagree with you...And Iam also pretty sure your the only one that has said its a waste to do..There is pretty much no risk at all in doing it...If you can build your own computer you should beable to do this mod without issues
does 80gb of ram and Q6600 work well on this board?
No risk in this...seriously. It just helps overclockers doesnt really help overclockING. After this mod I made it so that on load, my volts actually go UP .01 on load instead of sagging.
So can someone please explain how to do this Pencil mod exactly?
Got my board today, got 4GB working in vista X64 nicely now :D
Also when putting board together slapped on an 6CM fan screwed into unit sucking air out the NB
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...3&postcount=16
Just shade in the area where it says 100k VR with a #2 pencil
Hi guys, before pencil mod i was having to bios set 1.4815V to get 1.4V loaded real!
Now i set 1.4V bios... it gives 1.392 idle then 1.400 load :D
That same 1.4V did me 450x8 stable 24/7 on my X38 mobo! So let the OCing begin!
@ GAR your 3.6GHZ Q6600 clock is 400x9 or 450x8?
Whats your full bios setting used to obtain said above clock?
Last question... in first post said to raise NB volts to 1.5V+ if using 4GB Ram which i am... but which value in bios reffers directly to the NB??....SPP??
Hello,
someone can help me in ocking my xFx 780i?
It's mu first nForce board... so I don't know very well how to move in the board bios.
Specially:
1)what's the meaning of HT (5x, 4x etc.)? On Intel P35\X38 there aren't this voices.
2)I need to increase QDR instead of FSB like P35\X38... right?
I need to go on 3600Mhz (400x9) for @ daily use with my E8400...
I've done pencil v-mod on the board, and it's running fine with no v-droop... I've also changed thermal grease on the spp and mcp using zalman stg-01.
Please help me. Thanks
run QDR 1600 and ram at 800 or 1066Mhz, might need a small increase in chipset voltages for the Nb and a bit more Vcore for the CPU , estimating around 1.2Vcore if you got a nice CPU
Just adjust CPU Vcore , FSB QDR and Ram speed and voltage, leave rest on auto for the voltages, should work out of the box...
There's no need to mess with HT, or follow this guys stuff, covers it all ::
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApUiWgzUkGM
Here is my score the cards are clocked at 700/1000 linked
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=5375816 Edit... Sorry just seen you have GTS my bad.
How high are your guys's an girl's clocks going on Quads with the 9x multiplier?
Im stuck at 4.1 bench an 4.2 windows, nothing more no matter what. 3 of my Q6600's all stop there. My E8400 Benches 4.75 an only does Windows at 4.8.. So can anyone do higher with the 9 multipler with them Q's. Cause I want to know if its me or if thats the max for quads on the Nvidia chipset without going QX.
Nvidia an Intel are throwing blows an its coming out of SLI'ers pockets
Edit...Last comment was uncalled for... Deleted...
Well... what exactly are all your other settings? What's disabled and what's enabled.
At 3ghz you should be able to run everything at auto or stock. Are you using stock HSF? It seems that your cpu temps are a bit high for that overclock... well a bit high for an aftermarket cooler. I would get a new cooler before I delve into any more overclocking if I were you.
Also run memtest to make sure it's not your memory causing the failed overclock or benchmark.
I've reached 400x9 with those settings:

Very satisfied by this board... now I'm waiting to put a second 8800gts g92 to test SLI configuration. :D
Good one mate, just keep a sharp eye on them temps... maybe try with a bit lower Vcore... I know the board droops a lot but my friends E8400 does 3.6ghz at 1.16 volts and 4ghz on 1.26v
Unfortunately my E8400 isn't a lucky one...
If i get lower with v-core I get bsod when running orthos blend.
I might trying to go down with other voltages to see how the system react.
Stay tuned. :)
Read your cpu-z validation. Your getting 544 fsb outta 780i? Is this common with Wolfdale? Quads are getting 450 on these? I might get on of these boards. I lost my overclock on 650i and cant get it back. Cant get 3600 even at 1.42 without locking up, and cant run ram at 1000 if cpu overclocked at all.
Plus I'm sure 8x 8x might be holding my SLI back.
I was watching a video that someone had posted here. And the video tells about overclocking the 780i. In the video the guy says that we need to set GTLVREF's to +0.5 in BIOS, or, we will receive instability? Is this true?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApUiWgzUkGM
that's one of the reasons I replied to your post... You will see some gain surely in benchmarks and co but not very noticeable on day to day basis... I hardly notice the difference between 400mhz or 1066Mhz on the ram... if ya want to keep these rams keep them at 1000mhz 5-5-5-15 at normal volts... 1200mhz for fun and benches...
I didn't alter those settings with the QX9650 and it ran fine at 450FSB with 10 multi... try first without and if it is unstable you can alter it...
Ya. I find that my ram runs 4 3 3 7 with 2.2volts at 1000mhz.
I will leave it that. there is no really gain for 1200mhz.
Thanks
Well I have 1100mhz running at 5-4-4-15 with 2.2volts, no errors. 1140mhz seems to be max for these sticks, more voltage does not help.
So really that is good enough. Sure would be nice to see dd3 price down below $200.00.
This ram will have to do until then.
my mate did this to his xfx780i.....
He noticed his raptors in raid were slower on the xfx780i than his intel chipset as with the 780i drivers you cant enable/disable the write catch so he put the 680 drivers on from there website so see what happens. The 680 drivers allow you to enable/disable the write catch which made his raptors a lot faster. He has had no problems with it yet, although i told him the 3rd pci-e probley wont work but he isn't putting a 3rd card in anyway. I might give i a go over the weekend as ive benched my raptors in raid and there also slower:shrug:
Thanks,
Chris.
Hi guys, I received my 780i EVGA today and today I found this
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...=CP2-DUO-Q9300
is it worth it? does the 780i really works with yorkies without any problems or bugs? I currently have a C2D 6750 @3.6GHZ currently on my MARS, I dont know if that would be enough for my G92 GTS Sli please I need advice thanks
Hey I have an E8400 running on the 780i at 1800 FSB @ 4050. Best of luck!
hey starage nice mem latencies I ordered 2gb 8500 crucials as well
I'm the one who found that... you know... I set it to those settings and I'm pretty sure it helped me achieve more stability. I cant pass prime without those settings. I have no idea what those lanes are and what they do but it works for me and it isn't hurting anything.
How well does this board support 4 sticks?
I would either be running OCZ Platinum DDR800 4x2GB 5-4-4-15 or Corsair Dominator DDR1066 4x2GB 5-5-5-15.
I've had issues running four on a P35 board. I'm told an x38 works better than the P35. How is the 780i?
Looking for some info.
Have any of you guys noticed running 2.2V or higher vdimm for a while suddenly has your board being unstable?
I have seen a few people rma'ing memory only to find the new kits act as bad as the old ones, the end user then swaps or tests the ram in another board only to find the ram is fine.
So, if you are running high voltage how is your board fairing up?
I benched with the Gskill PC8000HZ (4-4-4-5 2T ) sticks Tony at 450FSB with 10X and 1200mhz 2.35volts 5-5-5-15 2T no issues with P03 bios on the eVGA... but a bench run only takes what 15 mins.. but I repeated them during 3 days to get some good scores... didn't do a thing here...
Well, the listed specs for the kit I got were 2.2v for that speed... figured it would be ok.
I think the memory is actually still good though, my other set of 1066 ballistix can't run 1066 anymore in this board either.... pretty sure the boards crapping out.
Are you sure it is the memory and not the memory controller? On my P35, I was told it had to be a memory problem. However, cranking the fsb down to 266, and setting the memory at spec (800 5-4-4-15 or 1066 5-5-5-15 depending on the sticks) it ran just fine. Although Memtest freezes after a couple of hours or so. Freezes, not reporting an errors.
I would try that first. With the QX9650 I would try 333 fsb, you could get most of the speed back my raising the multiplier to 12. However, if it is the memory controller, you probably need to RMA the board.
Cant get my system to boot now, comes up with 7F code
System was working fine, and was no longer OCed just running stock speeds, new ram arrived today so went to put that in... then i get long beep upon startup but no post!
Tried with old ram and new and system does long beep and fails to post!
Tried turning off PC, then resetting Cmos with jumpers
Also tried turning off system and taking battery out.. still no avail.. perhaps not long enough?
Board is picky with FSB:DRAM ratio's, anyone else notice it? I cant do unlinked 1780 / 1000 .. 1780 / 1088 etc none of it works.. Will bench for a couple of minutes to an hour depending on what i try. Voltages dont help. So now im at 1780 / 800. 4-4-4-12 1.95v on the mem and low voltages on SPP / MCP (i have the modded SPP fan)
I have mine at 1800mhz with the memory unlinked at 800mhz. It give it a 9:8 ratio in CPU-Z. I think that you will have some luck with that. Try not to give it odd numbers maybe. Shoot for 1800mhz and 1000 in your case. The ratio should be 9:10... it might work better!
I've tested those settings before. Meh it doesnt really matter much to me. I have low voltages with a speedy system. Im fine with where im at. Until i get the itch to tweak again i'll leave it. Having to much fun gaming etc on this ubar system
i had a heck of a time finding stable combinations. 400, 450 and 475 seemed to be the only ones that worked for me. i can't get the board to post at 500. i ended up at 475*8, 1:1 linked and synced (i think that's what bios calls it). although oc'ing was more difficult than my 680i, it's doing a much better job. i was able to bench at 450*9 on the 780i, whereas the 680i wouldn't come close.
I havent seen anyone posts with high FSB at all anywhere with the 780i.
I have 2 an both go that high with the E8400. My only beef is Vcore stops at 1.8v. 1.78 after vdrop
An thats what I had for them scores. It booted 5.0ghz but no windows action
I wanted to go higher but was out of vcore. I feel if ya want to Bar-B-Q a chip i should be able too. I doubt evga will release a bios with any higher vcore.
I still run the chip at 4050 for 24/7 with the same vcore I had before them overkill voltage runs. maybe once i get my chiller up an running the results will be differant. 780i FTW
Ok, im having some random freezing for no reason, feels like sometimes i can do anything for hours and no problems, sometimes it freezes, i have passed prime blend and memtest for hours with the current setup.....anyone else, im in line for a step up, i think im going for the 790i, if not im gettind rid of this board......anyone else get this??? plus the fsb holes are hindering my cpu, its capable of 3.85ghz perfectly stable, but thisboard has some nasty holes.
I'm very impressed GutterZ!
I'm assuming you just did that for one suicide run on 3Dmarks? That is an incredible score though. I'm sitting at 18k... a little more actually but not much.
How did you get your GPU clocks so high? I'm assuming you did a volt mod?
I was wondering... I'm running 2x2GB kit of OCZ reaper. I made the mistake of getting the pc6400 kit. Right now my settings are unlinked 1800mhz FSB and 800mhz memory. It's 9:8 in cpu-z. Timings 4-4-4-15-2T.
I was thinking that I might try to go for linked and 1:1 or sync for 900mhz. I'll have to loosen up a bit 5-5-5-15.
Should this perform better? Should I try 1T timings? Would 1T perform better?
Also I cant boot past 4300mhz. What's the deal with that? I cant help think that it's Windows Vista but people here have vista and are booting at 4500mhz.
ok backed memory down to 800mhz, i think this is the cause for the random freezing, this board has problems running memory at higher frequency at high fsb, 1600+
This is too true.
I have RMA'd 3 680i's and 1 780 over the last 14 months or so.
I was only trying to run 1600 FSB with divider to hit 1066mHz memory.
I never cranked any voltages up to crazy levels for the oc's , 2.1 -2.2v on the ram depending which kit i was using and normal mobo volts for a conservative 1600 mHz OC.
The boards would all invariably end up unstable after a few months and require lower and lower mem speeds to remain stable, untill they'd just start throwing me C1 errors at boot-up and locking up while running.
I learned my lesson and just started using 800mHz on the memory since those days.
No volt mod just upped the MCP voltage. I realy have put no time into overclockin the cards, Hwbot gives me a poor rating for my cards :( The case temp was 25f there on stock coolers. Ive never tried 1T just link an sink.
I put on optimal settings boot it then go an see were there at an lower them. If it flys then cool if not I keep turning dials 1 at a time.
I realy cant help ya to well. I just went intel 5 months ago an had only brief experiance with the AMD 4600. So Im still learning to. Its just a process of elimination going for stability or that high. Besides once you get your highest bench or most stabilist max FSb or Cpu speed, the fun is over! Now you got to buy something else.
GutterZ... what was your voltage set to when you did 4900mhz?
I maxed out vcore which i think is 1.8v an 1.78 after vdrop...
Everest shows it in the lower right... Thats my best Super PI 1M too
not to bad for a dual core.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1.../PC/4900-1.jpg
Here are my settings for 4050 on the 780i
Multiplier 9X
FSB 1800
Cpu core is 1.41250, Real is 1.38 such as CPU-Z reading an bios
Fsb is 1.3v
memory is 2.1v
SPP 1.50 this is the main factor of my stability
GTLVREF auto of 00mv
Hope this helps.
My Vid 1.1125 on my chip
This is the best I've done yet... I'm getting there!
1.632v on air.. thats madness. Not even worth the risk of totally burning that chip to pieces
how much voltage is too much voltage?
For me anything over 1.6v without super heavy cooling like dry ice cooling or super powerful watercooling.
I probably should have started something lower to start with. The truth is I rushed the overclock to 4500mhz and wanted to pass 3dmark to see what I get! I got greedy! I saw I guy do 1.8v @ 4900 here and wanted to give it a shot.
So what the heck! I tried it. The weird thing is I had to have the memory unlinked to 800mhz. When I had it linked it wouldnt boot. I had it set to 5:4 though. I wonder why it wouldnt boot. It's the same essentially right? I thought it would be the other way around.
Im thinking about getting the 790i.. just need to figure out how much the step-up is before i do it.. GAR how much was it
Its more stress on the mobo to do linked.. I think thats the problem.. I cant get linked : auto on this board at 1780QDR.. Its just flaky like that, im not sure whats making it do it either
Is the nvidia 780i chipset known for having poor SATA performance? (Reason i ask is that i just ran some HDD benchies on my system and the results were alot lower then i expected)
sorry i cant help ya Dragon.
just wanted to share my preliminary results with a xeon 3070 so far.7x525 3.7 1.475v mem 1:1(1050)2.2v,spp 1.45,mcp 1.5v.been running orthos blend for a half hour so far.im very impressed with this mb.cant wait to test a q6600 on it.
Hi guys , I have not read this whole thread yet but I will . I have an x3350 on the way , is it worth trying it on my evga 780i ? How has the max fsb turned out on these with quad core ?
Well I was stuck at 1800 FSB with a E8400.
But after a month at that speed, I change some voltages, I am currently running 100% at 1900 FSB (475*9=4275) on air cooling.
Wow this board is not that bad at all.
790i and ddr3 plus 1000w PS is not in my budget, LOL.
I'm going to work on 1900FSB soon also... but very stable and happy at 1800. 1.375vcore.
Thanks guys , what about with quad cores ?
I'm not sure with the Q6600 but I see no reason why it cant hit above 1600fsb. Their is actually a youtube video of a dude overclocking the Q6600 with this board found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApUiWgzUkGM
He makes it seem pretty easy.
The Q9300 I bet will hit about the same with a little higher bandwidth. I cant wait to see what the Q9550 will do!
Hi,
I'm with my Q6600 G0 on the XFX 780i :
- 9x1650 with vcore 1,44V boot and stress ok (occt or wprime) but doesn't boot after reset.
- 8x1856 boot ok and reset ok.
why ?
how do you guys undo the pencil mod? just wipe the resistor with your finger or something?
All you have to do fadetoblack is take an eraser and rub it out, its easy :)
Also, update on my OC'ing. Tryed 2050QDR, at first it wouldnt boot, hanged on 4E code. rebooted twice.. got back in, went back to my usual settings, blah blah. got the itch again, tried it about an hour ago and it booted it.. LOL.
Yea, the board is definately odd, it failed OCCT after 20min, not worth it. I rebooted to change voltages and it was corrupting Vista on me, vista told me system files were critically corrupted. I :banana::banana::banana:ted my pants, then i put back everything super fast and im not going to touch it. I did want to try it since i got the TRUE today. temps are 10c under load then my Zalman 9700LED was.. Great cooler, but its older now. I did have to change the 250mm fan on the side of my case, i moved it to OUTSIDE the case, so instead of in, its outside of the case.. looks kinda retarted but its still pretty cool. i really didnt want to lose that fan heh
Such a large results thread and nearly all of them dual cores , doesnt anyone have quad core results ? I want to know what chance I have of getting a 45nm quad to 8x475 or maybe higher with this mobo . Leeghoofd you would have tested this , please tell .
little update.
ran orthos blend for 13 hrs.no probs at all.im not going to go any higher with the fsb until i can get a ViperJohn nb block.even with a 80mm fan mounted on the stock cooler my nb temps are horrible.if i can get my hands on a q6600 or yorkie ill update with my results.
so far no complaints what-so-ever.this thing has been solid as a rock for me.
Did anyone mention in this thread where I can get the vcore reading from this board?
I'd like to build up an SLI setup with the 780i chipset.
Are there any issues with 8GB RAM or can the 780i easily manage 4x2GB sticks?
And what kind of problems do I have to expect when running the 780i which I wouldn't have with a X38?
FSB wall is no big deal for me, since I'd like to go with an unlocked QX9650.
With 780i eVGA, you cannot use SATA Optical drives, but one of the tech guys at eVGA's forum released a beta chipset driver that fixes it.
The 780i is really really good, just some dumb mistakes that should have never been made in the first place. The 780i can easily do 4x2, im doing 2x2 atm, going to get 2 more sticks for 4x2 for 8GB, So i'll report when i get them.
The board is great, there was a new bios just recently released, its on the eVGA boards. P04, highlights are CPU Microcode, not really much. I cant hold my 500x8.0 anymore, it blue screens. I think they tweaked internal timings on the board, so you can get better performance at lower FSB, but so far im back to 445x9.0 till i can figure out how to fix it.
Thanks a lot Furiøùs.
The sata bug seems to be an annoying one. Maybe I should better go with X38 and GX2... hm
the SATA bug has just recently been fixed for some with a beta chipset driver. Its not anyone elses fault but nVidia for doing this, but really, i just hope it gets fixed soon cause i want to replace my old plextor DVD-Burner with 2 SATA drives.. get crackin nVidia!!! :D
@ furious,
What reason have you changed to 8x multi? Does the bandwidth make that much of difference? If you have 1000mhz memory why run it at 800mhz. You should be running it linked at a 1:1 ratio or sync. That's just my opinion.
SATA's give me a fit installing 64bit Vista, after it loads all the files to the HD I have to unplug my DVD burner from the Sata port or else it will bluescreen when it reboots. Once Vista is installed and SP1 run I can plug it back in with no problems system 100% stable.
Just don't install "mediashield" drivers from NVidia they will kill system stability trust me, I found out the hard way
Edit: This is with running two raptors raid 0, I am not sure but I think the problem only happens when you are running raid.
My P5K with vista64 and sata dvdrw wasnt happy either , I ended up installing from an ide dvdrw and then swapping back .
I couldnt run linked and synced, didnt like the 1:1 divider. not sure what it was but i couldnt have that high FSB with the high memory speed. it really hated it. Blue screens, would crash within seconds of OCCT and prime. meh but now its 445.9.0 with the mem at 1017 5-5-5-15. havent tried lowering anymore voltages cause thats what people are reporting with the P04 BIOS, slightly lower vCore for the same OC
This chipset has a wall around 450 MHz right (with q6600) ?
;)
Geezers!
Anybody tried the new "beta" Everest and LOOKED at the SPP Temps???
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ex/780ihot.jpg
thats my only gripe with this mb.the nb is ridiculously hot.despite having replaced the tim with ic7d and thermalright tape on the fets AND a 80mm fan blowing on the nb i still idle at 70c!
the only option is to get a waterblock to cool it down.so my hr-05/sli are both useless to me now :(
thanks for the headsup on the beta everest Saph.ive paid hell trying to find a proggy to monitor nb temps.
I first tried build 1344 beta but it didn't have a SPP sensor. I finally located the 1343 beta and this is what I've got for the SPP ...
Attachment 75475
Why would a later beta not have the SPP?
Build 1343 Beta:
http://www.lavalys.com/beta/everestu...m7gsn3dvjx.zip
Two things:
First: Why wont my board boot and run stably with memory linked? I am at 1800mhz FSB with 800mhz memory right now (unlinked) and have tried linked 5:4 and synced (with loose timings 5-5-5-15) and both are not stable.
SEcond: have to hook my GPU cooler fan up to mainboard (wrong connector for GPU). It's the two aux fan connectors at the bottom of the board installed. How do I control the fan speed with them? How do I lower settings or voltages on those connectors?
