Consider BIOS F7d as a test BIOS.
Loadline calibration does not work yet correctly, tRD bug (tRD "Auto" sets wrong tRD) still exists and there seems to be a problem recognizing SATA burners, similar to BIOS F7a. Performance is on par with F6b which is a great improvement as F7a produced poor memory performance.
With F6b I had problem that I could not run tRD4 at stock running "Performance Enhance" "Turbo" and "Standard" without loosing a lot of bandwith. This was caused by low tRC 18 in SPD and I walked around this by creating a custom SPD mainly based on Ballistix SPD. This error is solved with F7d. So memory compatibility seems to have improved, at least for me.
So for me F7d works best currently and I hope that a new BIOS version without existing bugs will be released this week.
This is really bad...
So you guys think that Formula is the best X38 board to run 4 DIMM's? I must aim for X38, because the good Crossfire performance.
I just hate the Analog Devices audiocontroller on all ASUS boards. The Realtek controller is by far better on the Gigabyte boards... Always an compromise...
How old is F7d?
Compile date is 11/21/2007.
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/3784/f7dbz8.th.jpg
Pretty recent...i'll flash but if it's true about SATA optical drives it's gonna be a real problem. F7a had the same issue....i can't understand WHY Gigabyte introduce NEW problems with bios releases.
I thought the point of bios updates was to FIX existing issues, not create new ones??
Gigabyte did not release them officially so it's not a big deal. Perhaps some users had issues with SATA optical drives and they built in a fix which causes new issues. Perhaps your drive works with F7d BIOS.
For a board maker it's not an easy thing to enshure compatibilty for all existing components in all combinations in the world, there are simply too many of them.
I think Gigabyte is on a good way and things are gonna to improve.
F7d gave me 10 FSB increase ( 430X9 ) , with f5h i cant pass 420 FSB

also i was able to push my memory to 1146 MHz

i get also NB and SB coolers :)
Feichti
nice Feichti, where you find those? are they expensive?
yep their fine, no issues.Quote:
Don't you have the cold boot problem, i mean after a cold start are the OC settings still intact?
luck:)
(seems abit quiet on here now so may as well say hi) :)
im about to enter the world of gigabyte x38-dq6 ..ive read this entire thread ...lots of probs with the bios it seems ( i think gigabyte should pay you lot cash for finding all these glitches for them.
still ... its the same with all boards..ive just come from a nightmare p5k premium wifi took me 3 days to realise there was a western digital sata2 flaw my sound card wouldn't work in the latest pci slots and the dominator ram i bought was duff too hahaha 16hrs a day for nearly 2 weeks....still i learnt allot.
looking forward to getting my gigabyte ,dominator pc-8500 ..with q6600 ...and shall be on the ball with you guys posting various faults for the gigabyte team.
reason i chose this board was that the pci slots are version 2.1 so they should work with my old sound card. ? fingers crossed....also i find gigabyte very stable and reliable. i think once it works it'll be a great long serving board.

about to build:
q6600
x38-dq6
dom pc-8500 ( with the fan thingys)
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme
western digital sata2 x many
emu and motu 2408 mk2 sound cards
No issues with this board, i love it, much more than my previous maximus crapius.
Hello!
I've have a X38 DQ6 gigabyde mb, and i cant get it to run any faster than 266 fsb.
When i set it to 400x9 in bios, its starts with 266x9! any suggestions?
It's an q6600 g0, 4 gigs 4 sticks of kingston 9600 ram, watercooling.
cpu vcore 1.4, vdimm 2.35 volt.
I've runned this cpu on an asus mb before, at 3.6 ghz, but i got som problems with my harddisks on that board, so now i'm trying gigabyte.
One or more of your manual settings is triggering a failed overclock.Quote:

Post your bios settings & someone will be ablle to help.
Huh... i think i found it... running now at 3.6 ghz now...
i was using 1.4 volt in bios, and now i'm using 1.45 volt.
In everst it shows 1.39...
Before i used 1.3875 on my asus p5k and it worked nice...
The SATA optival issue is still present with F7d...the bios won't detect the drive, i have to manually have the bios detect the drive (which it does) but upon restart the drive is lost again.
Does anyone know what "loadline claibration" does?...it's a new option in bios.
Loadline is the correct word for Vdroop. With loadline calibration enabled loadline/Vdroop should be reduced to an absolute minimum. Currently, loadline calibration seems to be broken or does a very low job.
does laters versjon of winflash work with this mob?
I have F3 bios on my mob og geting low bandwith.
Is F6b bios better? And does work painless like f3?
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Gigab...48-71635.shtml
Looks like PCB v1.1 will be reserved to the next X48 with an emphasis on overclocking performance...
New buyers should really wait
What are those LEDs??
It's been a while since I've played with Gigabyte brand motherboard, the last Gigabyte board I played with was the old 8SRX :)
Thanks to Gigabyte, I've the opportunity to get reacquainted in the form of Gigabyte X38-DQ6 and X38T-DQ6 that Gigabyte has so kindly supplied me with :)
I purchased a QX9650 L739A644 Retail OEM recently, and it seems to be oc'ing very poorly (worse I've seen so far) on Asus Blitz Extreme and Asus Blitz Formula even with lastest 0904 and 1205 bios respectively. So thought I'd try Gigabyte X38-DQ6 to see if it's the QX9650 being a dud or just motherboard/bios support issues.
I installed QX9650 L739A644 and it booted up even on X38-DQ6's F3 bios. Web site says official support for QX9650 starts from F6A bios onwards, so was surprised to see F3 bios had no issues with QX9650 as well.
System:
- Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 L739A644 Retail OEM
- CPU Cooling: Thermaright Ultra 120 Extreme + 120x25mm Delta 75cfm fan + MX-2 TIM

Flashed to F7D bios now for more tests..
@4000Mhz - 12x333FSB at 1.5v bios (1.488v cpuz idle -> fluctuating between 1.440v to 1.456v cpuz load)
First 2 hrs of Prime95 showed 1.440v constantly
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Gigabyte...me95_load1.png
Then changed to 1.456v in CPUZ...
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Gigabyte...oad2_1456v.png
1.440v - 1.408v = 0.32v more vcore needed than on Asus Blitz Extreme water cooled.
Leaving the cpu oc'ing aside for the moment, decided to figure out the divider and timing performance of the Gigabyte X38-DQ6 and I must say end result is pretty good even if the dividers don't always work on all straps variations.
Here's Super Pi 32M @9x445FSB (2.5A divider = 4:5) 556Mhz 4-4-4-8 at 2.48v (don't know why it needs so much vdimm as Corsair 10000C5D did 570Mhz 4-4-4-x at 2.35v on Asus P35 chipset boards.

Only 6.172 seconds slower than QX9650 @9x445FSB 1:2 DDR3-1780Mhz 7-6-5-18 1T on Asus Blitz Extreme (P35 chipset)
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Asus/Bli...1m22s563ms.png
Still confused about dividers they have in bios some just refuse to work even at lower clocked memory speeds that some dividers with higher memory clocks.. but if i try to keep to similar Asus board strap to divider arrangements I have a bit more predictability i.e. 4:5 divider on Asus only is selectable on 266FSB strap
Thanx eva:up: Im picking up a qx9650 in a couple of days and also will be using a dq6 so your tests are a great help:) One question..Did the f3 bios work fine for you? or were you able to overclock higher with newer bios?
Still both a X38 chipset and Gigabyte X38-DQ6 newb myself... i didn't have F3 on long enough to find out.. went straight to F6B then to F7D bios :)
Oh have a newb question for all of yas...
what's the default voltages for when set to Normal ?

Nice.. high FSB helps bandwidth :)
Looks like Gigabyte X38-DQ6 vcore droop gets worse the higher you set vcore in bios. At 1.55v bios set vcore you get 1.54v idle but 1.488v load. Still for 4.1Ghz mark, X38-DQ6 is requiring around 0.05v more vcore than what I needed on Asus Blitz Formula/Extreme.
Still depressing to see this QX9650 needing this amount of vcore just for 4100Mhz :(

hello
does anyone know when the F7D bios will be available on the gigabyte site or where to d/l?
im waiting for my parts to arrive, thought best to be ready bios wise.

As its beta BIOS I don't think it will be officially on Gigabyte website, but you can download it from here: http://rapidshare.com/files/72285542/X38DQ6.F7D.html (link was already posted by mjb1206)!
I flashed mine yesterday, today I am going to do some testing more how strong is it :)
And thanks eva2000 for timings, will test them on my Teamgroup mems ;)
Hi
Times just getting back a Gigabyte X38 - DQ6 and noticed that the Vdroop it reacts strangely giving a jump in the very high voltage.
It would have a MOD to stabilize this disabilities?
Sorry for my bad English
yeah a mod would be nice :(
Yeah...let's call Hipro5 :D

hi all !
i got really good times with f3h bios for X38T and really hard times with f7d + x38-ddr2.
on X38T for me green slots is good for 1600mhz and sharp timings and red slots for high mhz and f3h bios made this jump up a 100mhz on both.
strap 333 goes more easy on my mobo then 400 -500fsb only with strap 333.maybe letters are wrong.
with X38 ddr2 i got bad times from start and it got worse with new bioses.
now i only can run 1:1 + 5:6 others dont boot. release bios was best for me.
i changed to giga after two long(6 months rma) with asus.
i think in this times you need a lot of luck to get good mobo.
i got two ds4 in one month and same batch from same shop and one likes my crucial and one not??but second is good with adata.
i hope you guys have more luck with your mobos.
basco what memory you using ?
Swapped to 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2-8500 memory and seems to be the best memory so far for X38-DQ6 :)
Decided to do some single and quad Super Pi 32M tests at QX9770 speeds of 8x400FSB = 3200Mhz at stock vcore in bios :D
Straight boot from bios. Seems for 2.66C (3:4) divider, cpuz v1.42 and memset as well as coretemp 0.9.5.6 don't seem to recognise the divider and memory clocks properly. Only app that does is Everest Ultimate :)

EVA: that's pretty good for 3200 mhz...the 32M superPI results is what i get for 3960 mhz on my Q6600.
i am using 3xGMH
g.skill-pc6400(ballistix?),adata-pc8500,crucial-pc8500.
EVA do you have the same behavior when booting with default multi?
for me multi x9 on q6600 every tool recognise correct.but not with lower multi.
in spi-is this the bigger cache so fast?
Eva, now when you have the X38-DQ6, it is said to run well with 2*1GB mem, but please, but noone pull off 4*1GB with Ballistix 8500. Can you make it? The formula can, Loc.o showed me:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...aximusload.jpg
that would make to much sense.same thing goes for northbridge and southbridge chip locations, never happen....sources told me that the north and south bridge MUST be that close and if the leads were longer on the mobos to make them "out of the way" then they would lose signal\latency etc...pfft.
back on topic i need bios that are NOT flaky and WILL run the new q9650 on gigabyte x38 ddr2 version mobo..anyone?
no probs on 9x or 10x either it's when selecting 3:4 divider that this occurs mainly where cpuz can't read properly.. memset incorrect reporting occurs on other dividers too though
will be a while before i test 4x1GB.. got alot of tweaking and research to do on every bios setting and divider :D
Right now it's probabl best to stick with F5H or even F3 available on the Gigabyte download page for this motherboard.
Well i just bought this X38-DQ6 mobo... and i can say it is a pretty good expirience in overclocking compared to my old AMD system... (this is my 1st Intel system... ever)
Now i have some issues:
1)The mobo came with the F4 BIOS, so should i flash to some other version?
2)I have 2 PCi cards, a 56k modem, and SB Live, now the problem is that when i restart the computer the modem gets lost, but when i shut down and boot again the modem is listed in the hardware devices again...
3)I'm having some problems with the memory dividers...
i get this in BIOS:
x.xxA
x.xxB
x.xxC
x.xxD
and basically the only ones that work are 4.0A,3.0A... anything other and the system won't boot, now i'm probably doing something wrong there so any help would be appreciated...
4)Windows, CoreTemp and some other tools keep reading my CPU speed wrong. if i set it to 320x10 then windows read i as 3.53Ghz, what's up with that?
Well, if anyone can give me some hints :)
Oh, and since i'm new to DDR2 also, are the timings in the pic. OK? i have the Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400С4 kit...
Thanx,
My BSOD issues were related to OC, since i dropped down to 378x9=3.4GHz...no false POSTS or failure to startup or BSOD within Vista...
OK, i managed to get my clocks up a bit... but i have 1 small problem...
In the attached pic. i found one latency i can't seem to change in the BIOS, and i have to run MemSet every time because the mobo sets this to 24... and i tested it at 14... so if anyone knows what BIOS setting changes this it would really help a lot...
Also, coming from AMD procesors working mostly up to 50 - 54°C i'm a bit worried about my temps... my TT Big Typhon keeps the CPU at about 65°C under load (3.4Ghz) , so is that OK, or should i keep the temps under 58°C??
Thanx :)
I'm trying to fit Thermalright Ultra 120 cooler to my Gigabyte X38 DQ6 board but the copper backplate mounted under the CPU area is very much in the way. Can this be taken off and not affect the top heatpipe solutions?
Read The Manual, It Tells You How To Do It Teccxpert!!!!
no effects are all.. works fine http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=5121 :)
yeah been a while since I tried Gigabyte .. hehe
hey guys. I got a problem here with my X38-DQ6/P35-DS4 & a Logitech G15 gaming Keyboard (series 1) with flip lcd)...
Used to work fine & then one day it stopped.. Now I have tried reinstalling XP & all the usual but I canntot get the G15 to play nice with my P35-ds4 & x38-dq6...
Every time I plug the k/board in, it comes up as "unknown devie" in my device manager...
I am at a loss as what to do. I took the keyboard back for RA & the tech there pluuuged in to an Asus mobo & it worked fine...
WTF??? I am real peeved at this dilemma...
Any tips or anyone else has had this experience??

The SATA optical issue is *STILL* present with F7f....this is not good!
I'm sticking with F6b. I'd stop playing with the F7's as they either don't provide any performance benefit or just add more bugs in the long run.
Hey all, thanks for a great forum, posters!
I have the X38-DQ6 which I've had maybe a month. So far, I have to say I'm abit let down. I shelled out almost $500 here in N.Z which is alot for a guy with no present job, moving up from my p965-S3 (so a huge upgrade or so I thought).
First problem (maybe someone can suggest something I'm missing): My max FSB is...410-420 mhz. Currently on F4 bios but did try one of the F6 bios' to find the max FSB went below 400. I'm very disappointed since my S3 could do 514 perfectly stable although I could only have 2 sticks of ram in at a time.
Second problem: Every couple days or so, the machine, upon reboot, just fails to. It requires taking 3 sticks out and leaving one in, letting it boot up and run a little while and then shutting down and reinserting the ram. What is with this, anyone know ?
I have a Q6600 G0 CPU and G.skill HZ and Crucial ram. Appreciate any suggestions! Thanks.
Luke
Also, is it relatively safe to flash bios from Windows nowadays ? I don't have a floppy drive is all.
I forgot to mention that I had to RMA the first board I got since it just wouldn't POST no matter what. Took it in to get it looked at and they couldn't get it working either. Would go through endless reboot cycle.
Maybe I was a little harsh, I'm not that let down but I do need a stable system that pref overclocks to 450. I didn't think that was too much to ask. I havn't done alot of tweaking so maybe theres hope still.
I flashed the bios with F7f
the result , I cant overclock the system
going back to F7D :)
I'm holding on with F3 bios pic of S-pi 1M with not that optimized memsetting 4-4-4-4 rest auto.

F'n hell chefnr...
Now if only my E6850 would do that.
Thanks i will go for to get my mem at higher speed this is mem at 4-4-4-4 1:1
Then i will get the cpu a bit higher..
Have a pic of 3d05 at same speed.

Frostybyte >
I have the same probleme as you. But before the endless reboot cycle, the mobo flashed itself from the HDD, and it seems to have failed. I don't understand why it flashed... I just set bad parameters for frequencies and 2.0A (etc)...
It happened the day after I received the mobo.
I had to RMA it too.
Did it happen because of the HDD was a Raid0 ?
Sorry to hear that viquene. Having raided HD's shouldn't affect anything. Did you keep a bios copy on your drive?
Is 420Mhz considered average with these boards ? I can't believe how bad that is compared to other chipsets.
Yes, the bios is still probably on the HDD...
The problem, for me, is not that the flashing failed. It happens. It is just I don't understand WHY it flashed...
I didn't ask anything...
If the params don't allow to boot, the mobo must load default params...no ?
So we're two months on from the X38 release...and STILL no official and/or stable bios....great isin't it?
Gigabyte are a wonderful company that really care about it's customers who keep them in business and put food on there table.
Did anyones sarcasm radar go off just then?
There is alot of droop on the DIMM voltage with this bios, setting 2.0V in bios droops to 1.96V.
