Just make sure if you get the Mustang, make sure it has the 'Track Pack' option on it. That gives you real tires, a Limited Slip differential, a suspension setup that gives you 5x better handling, its definitely the way to go, and if the GT you tested didn't have the track pack than you weren't getting the full experience.
The GT with Track Pack puts up skid pad handling numbers reaching the 370Z and Porsche Cayman. All for the price and look of an American muscle car. I have a 2004 GT, but that 2010 makes me drool. :p:
And how could you not know how to drive a standard transmission yet? I learned ONLY on a standard transmission, I think it messes the kid up if he drives an automatic first...
