How could you tell 1 of your cores wasn't working ? did you get an error message or something ?
i'd do video encoding with multithreaded apps and the cpu usage in the task manager would show 50%. first core maxed out and second core nothing. i'd reboot and both cores would work like normal until it happened again several hours or days later. this happened half a dozen times before i decided something was wrong. i initially thought my overclock was unstable and was causing this but then it happened again three hours after a fresh install of windows with my pc at stock speed. i've stress tested my pc and it's rock solid. it's really a mystery, but i'm happy with it now.
Strange..
As I mentioned a few posts back, my E6700 behaves a strangely. Sometimes it runs my test program very fast, 80% of the rest of the time, it runs it more slowly. There's something weird here. It may come down to how the OS is deciding to use the dual processors, depending on other loads on the system. Regardless, it's not good.
I've been following this thread for a long time but it is getting difficult to keep up.
Is there a consensus on the best cooling solutions for an overclocked air cooled setup???
Ultra 120 for CPU? I'm clueless on NB and SB solutions. Any help?
Right off if you get the Ultra 120 over the Thermaltake Big Typhoon it will be to your benefit. I think the costs are the same since the stock fan with the Big Typhoon is not good enough and needs a substitute. The mounting system to the motherboard of the Ultra 120 is superior by a long shot. But the Ultra 120 is larger and may require a push-pull fan arrangement to get the best results. I am going to reconfigure my Ultra 120 fan(s) today with a push - pull system using 2 Scythe 1200 rpm 49 cfm fans, instead of one 1600 rpm 60 cfm fans.Quote:

So on the NB cooler I have replaced the factory TIM with AS5 and placed a small fan on top of the HS attaching it with hot glue. When running with the fan the max temp I got with a probe laying inside the heat sink fins at the base was 35c-36c (loaded).
If someone has a better MCH (NB) cooling solution I would like to know about it myself.

I have the swiftech mcx159-cu on the NB with AS5, it hasn't completely cured yet, but I've already been able to gain 20 more mhz. It comes with clips for the board, but i took the clip off of the stock heatsink and used that instead.Quote:

I couldn't allow the largest thread in the forum to go without one of my posts. Finally figured out most of this mobo...:toast: :toast:
How is height a problem?Quote:

congrats lawry over 200,000 views of your asus thread :clap:Quote:

The TankGuys have a combo bundle that includes an Asus P5W DH Deluxe and a Core 2 Duo E6400 with a revision verification that the motherboard serial #s will start with 68. Reviewing this thread the only change mentioned that I could find is a 1.85v mch. Does anybody know what changes were made to these motherboards with the 68 serial # that the TankGuys would give this revision verification? I only spotted one owner of a 69 serial # in this thread. Is this combo of an E6400 and P5WDH a good buy?
don`t know where to put his , ahh well
here is the world first performance test of a 8800gtx : : http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4812
Yeh man, stoked, cheers bro :toast:Quote:

About What should the FSB termination voltage, MCH voltage, ICH voltage, be when the FSB is 375 and Vcore is 1.375?

As Sparx said, Ultra 120 is a very good choice. I would not bother with modding the NB and SB - stick a low RPM 120mm fan near them and make sure you have good airflow in your case and you don't need to modify anything if like me you are only using under 430FSB to do around 3600 - 3700 MHz with 6600s. If you were heading over 450 FSB with a 6400 I would start to think about special cooling mods for the NB/SB...Quote:

I'm good on the CPU...I ordered the Ultra 120. However, I also ordered the HR-05. Sounds like they won't work together based on Sparx's comments. Not good.
Aside from the fact that the included brackets won't work, it is very tight because of the locale of the MCH or NB chip.Quote:

Don't feel bad I got one I hope to return even if there is a restocking charge.
I am using the stock MCH HS with as5 applied and I hot glued a radio shack 40 mm fan to the top, which barely fits BtW. Right now I have about 82F ambient and am running Ortho and the temps from a temp probe are 38F at the base of the HS. The fan is a little loud so I am going to try the 7volt trick and see if this quiets down the fan but provides enough air flow to do a decent job. I feel the HS is decent, just needs a fan on it.

I'm a newbie-ish overclocker and I'm slowly learning about my Asus P5W DH mobo but can someone explain to me what the memory divider does?
I keep hearing people hear go on about it but I have no idea where it is in the bios or and how I can access it?
I currently have my Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 overclocked from 266 fsb to 400 but anything after that, the memory speeds are a little screwed?
My memory is GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit.
My current overclocked set up has my memory at 800Mhz at the moment but When I overclock my PC is it OK to go over 800Mhz a touch?
The next step down is something like 600Mhz...
I really do wanna go over the 3Ghz barrier on air... Currently stuck at 2.8Ghz!
Another thing I need to ask is this - Have you guys been experiencing a weird like raspberry (almost like light) speaker noise that goes off every now and then? Sometimes it's constant like every few seconds and sometimes it's every 30 seconds. It's really frustrating and I don't know what the hell it is or how to get rid of it! :(
Switching the PC off fully and back on again seems to cure it.
One final question... Vcore, what's max setting for this? I'm sure mine is set at 1.5125 or summat like that. Is that too much?
Thanks to all replies in advance!
Memory dividers let the memory run at several ratios, so you are not stuck with running it sync with the Front Side Bus.
You can set memory dividers in the same menu you can change the FSB.
The speed displayed is the theoretical speed of the ram. For example if it says 800Mhz when you are running a 400Mhz FSB, the real speed of your ram is 400mhz, thus you are running the memory 1:1.
Now if you think your ram is limiting you to get higher, chose a smaller ram divider, for example 2:3, which would be displayed as 600mhz with a real speed of 300Mhz.
What vcore you can run, depends on your cooling and temps. I have high end watercooling, but I dont use more than 1.45V for long term usage anyway.
And the P5W wasnt maybe the best choice to oc a E6300. 400Mhz is already not bad for the P5W and I doubt you wont see much more than 450Mhz.
Have you raised the VMCH voltage? Let FSB termination voltage at auto and disable Hyperpath3 if you havent already.
That's the memory divider you are stepping the memory up and down with.Quote:

It's a lot. Do you have a good cooler? Try to find the lowest Vcore you can use and still have a stable system @ a given speed.Quote:
