i read in the thread that the board does the weird turnon, shut off, post, repost..then boot, this happens after being OC'ed. Is this normal, do most of them do it,im using the ud5. What are the max voltage settings for the qpi/vtt since i've read that 1.35 is the highest voltage in order not to damag the cpu but i cant seem to post at 200bclk with anything less than 1.42..all else is stock settings except the vcore of course. I can't really get any higher than 200 bclk with my ud5 no matter how high i set the qpi/vtt , even if i leave it on auto, any advice on what to do to get over 200 bclk. thanks alot for any assistance.

pre-boot QPI test, not unlike the pre-boot strap test that did the same thing back with the p35's and X38's. I've even had a P45 and X48 do it, but you never heard much about it.

ok so good to know its ok.. Now why cant i seem to boot at 200bclk withouth using 1.4-1.42 qpi/vtt is this normal, since i see many people making it seem that 1.35 is the max. What can i do to get over 200bclk as i cant seem to be able to boot above that clock speed no matter what i do to votlage. Any particular voltage setting.. ram/uncore multi..?

If you could, please list all of your settings (including multi's and volts) and we'll have a look at it for you.

thanks, ill post a pic of ET6 with all my voltages, other than that im running 200bclkx20, 1600 ram using 8 multi and 16 for the uncore, then 36 multi for the qpi.. I use 1.42 qpi/vtt and all else stock..excecpt vcore whichi requires 1.41 under load and in bios is set to 1.44 which is what the cpu uses during idle processing in windows.

How about the performance mode? Standard, Turbo or Extreme?

Also, what dram v's and timings are you running?

As a matter of interest - what difference is there between thes three settings - as I have not been able to get any difference on the multiplyer as 21 is the max - so how do these work?

I moved from the noctua to water and went from 4.1 to max oc of 4.3 - HT on.
See my signature.
This was my first water build and it went together very easily.
The noctua is an excellent air cooler but you can't compare air to WC.

Ok i dont know what happened, i just set my qpi/vtt to 1.24 or whatever is on the picture and everything worked perfectly. I have the performance mode to standard and im running ram @ 1600 with 8X multi and the timings are 8-8-8-24 with 1.5v which is what my ocz gold are rated at.

Weird i'll try later on posting above 200 and see what happens.

These tighten/loosen subtimings just like the performance level settings with the last few Intel chipsets. You absolutely will see a difference but mostly in benchmarks. This is why I use standard for everyday use, and turbo for benching. Extreme mode = lock up city in my experience. Others may have had luck with some dram pull-in adjustments, but not I.

Indeed Steve and if I recall your build is all kinds of kick ass with a Feser quad xchanger isn't it?

Ok, I got a new 920 with a batch # of 3839A611 and now I'm able to boot up to 211 Bclk, I could not boot past 189 Bclk with my 3839A628. Let's start tweaking. more to follow....

By linx 20X do you mean running 15 or more passes of 17k problems at above 200 bclk.

Before i really wanted to know if i could run 1.42 qpi/vtt without doing any damage.. I was able to boot at 213 and the ram @ 1704.. man Im proud of this ram it was running @ 1650 undervolted.. and now its running @1704 and i set the voltage to 1.64 just to be safe it wouldn't fail.. its rated at 1600 mhz with 1.65 stock.. so far its performing great. So would it be ok to run 1.42 qpi ?? Thanks for the support.
Notice the cpu is not fully Oc'ed i just backed the multi down a bit to test only my NB/QPI, ram.

yomny which batch number do you have on your I 920. Look on the white sticker of the box of your cpu.

3839a628, i was able to post and boot using 213*20 which gave me 4.26 but i needed a bit more than 1.41vcore to be stable and i dont want to push more until i water cool or know for sure if 1.42 qti/vtt is not doing much damage. Keep the info coming guys. Seems to be hard to get a straight answer when it comes to things such as this qti voltage, the max temp for I7 and the max vcore.

There is a straight answer and it's been made clear several hundred times on this site alone lol ;)

Keep the QPI/VTT .05v below cpu vcore, Intels limit is 1.35v VTT and 1.55vcore, but there is a cushion on that figure; mine in practice is 1.45v vtt and 1.6v core. This is water cooled and voltages like this shouldn't be used for long term usage no matter what cooling.

Use my advice at your own risk :)

So i guess then the most people cant really run using 4ghz on a 24/7 setup for a year or two since the required voltages for these are quite on the high end of the safe levels.. Good to know

So we've gone from keeping the QPI/VTT within .05v of the DRAM voltage to now keeping it .05v below CPU vCore? Is this in combination or are we now saying just keep it .05v below CPU vCore?

For 4.2ghz 24/7 I need 1.376vcore load, 1.42 bios and 1.35qpi/vtt. I will be using it 24/7 as long as I have the chip...when i am not benching at higher settings. My guess is most running at 4ghz+ on this forum are doing so long term or as long as they have the chip.

1.35 qpi/vtt is intels max...but some need in low 1.4's range, it is variable per cpu. One person needed crazy high like 1.7, then bought another cpu and only needed 1.3's. Personally, I would have no problem running it in low to mid 1.4's for 4ghz and some are, but just dont need to on mine... each person has to decide on their own risk tolerance.

And DRAM v should be within .5v of qpi/vtt, benching I am keeping mine within about .35.

Benching, between spi 32m, both chess stress test/benchmarks, cinebench, pc mark, etc, I probably have 24hrs+ at prime type loads with 1.96-2v DRAM (to get uncore at 4500mhz and mem at 2000mhz) and 1.62-1.64qpi/vtt, 1.66vcore...cpu still Oces at exact same settings. I wouldnt run these 24/7 or even close to it...but benching I have had no problems with those volts.

how do you get 1.35 for the qpi vtt? my bios only allows changes in .02 intervals on even numbers... 1.340 1.360 1.380 etc..

fyi, my 200x19 config passed with flying colors... so I backed my qpi off to 1.340... (from 1.360)

The Feser quad is working out very well, thank you for asking.
Thinking about trying some tec cooling next.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the input - gee there is a lot of knowledegable and helpful people on here. I think all things considered I will move to water cooling in the near future because even if I don't want to go for high clocks it will still give me much more flexibility. My system would also be quieter which would also be nice.

On the GB extreme bioses....F3 bios qpi/vtt goes 1.32, 1.34, 1.36, but all F4 bioses, and F5e which I am currently using goes 1.315, 1.335, 1.355, and I am using 1.355. As to why the change...have to ask GB on that one.

measured using multimeter real cpu vtt yet ? probably to more accurately depict the real value ?
