Core i7 Overclocking by Batch #

I've been staring at the bios screen almost the entire 3 hours, because it simply wouldn't boot win and i tried nearly everything (see below).

Different mem dividers
Different mp
QPI dividers
Turbo on/off
VTT
Vcore
Vdimm

Popped in my trusty 920 (4.6ghz 21x220 @ 1066 mem ht on 1.35V 24/7) loaded the profile and booted right up and stable till now (10 hours ago).
My memory runs out of juice around 2100mhz cl8 and with the 920 its 1780mhz or 2230mhz wich is to low or way to high (220bclk). With the 930 i can reduce the bclk without losing cpu speed and that way come very close to the 2100 mhz ram speed. That way there both performing close to their max :D.

Oh what a shame, i wake up thinking on those SS.

Anyway, if you can get another one with better batch, SS and configs will be appreciated.

4.0Ghz (21x191) HT on
Vcore: 1.30625v
QPI/Dram (Vtt): 1.2375v

stable for at least several hours with Prime95 using small FFTs & blend

with HT off, same overclock only requires about 1.2625 Vcore with much lower temps...
I'm thinking 4.2Ghz may be possible with HT off @ Vcore < 1.325v but haven't tried yet

anyway probably about average, not terrible definitely not a gem

Smokey, I can't quite tell from the pic, but does the 930 have a new s-spec?

uh oh, this is the fourth person i've seen with mis. 3001 batch 930's and ALL have been dissapointed thus far. Looks like intel is tired of us making their 1000 dollar chips look bad...?

what about i7 - 920 batch 3944A837 ?

Man those 3001 i7 930s dont look good at all...

Intel Core I7 920 D0 - batch 3927A448 (crap)
Coolermaster Hyper 212Plus, with MX2

Gigabyte Odin Pro 800W PSU
and so on


Problem i have is, i can only succesfully clock this CPU using the 21 multiplyer. Today I've put the newest bios for the board in (0901), it says it increases board stability, and it does, sort of.

To get to 4Ghz i run:

CPU VCore - 1.3000V
QPI - 1.27500
IOH - 1.14
ICH - 1.10
CPU PLL - 1.80
LLC - On

Temps are 72C max with Core 0 being the highest after runing 15 passes of Intel Burn test on High.


Thing is, whatever i try with the board settings, 1.29375 is half stable so it doesnt matter. Using the 20 multiplyer, i can see many people have trouble, i need more CPU voltage (1.33 wasnt stable). Using 19 x 210, it just wont boot, no matter what i try in the settings, ram, voltage, timings, pcie, crap. The ram is stable up to 1800Mhz so that is no problem.

So i got two questions:


1) Why does it still randomly crash, sometimes in IE, sometimes in Games, sometimes on desktop - just freezes even though i did 10 passes of IBT on high?
2) Why cant i even boot at 210 BCLK?


Man it's driving me nuts

1) Gotta be some power saving tech kicking in, Can be C6, for example.
2) Either a bad chip or incorrect IOH / ICH / VTT settings.

Anybody knows anything about this batch 3949A596?

Try:

BCLK = 19x210

CPU VCore - 1.3000V
QPI - 1.4
IOH - 1.2
ICH - 1.2
CPU PLL - 1.88
LLC - On

If that is doing it for you, you know it's not the Vcore. Next lower the QPI to 1.35v...try again.

Start high on all voltages and go lower on one at a time. It's alla about having a static environment when isolating factors.

Here we have 70 pages of 920 batches that may or may not be very good. For a new build I had thought about 920 or 930 but where is the quality. I am now thinking about a 940 or 950. Are these more stable CPU's?

It depends. They are binned higher (i.e. better wafers than the 920) so they may be slightly better. But I'd save your money and go for a W3520 or 920 instead.

Does it makes sense to run on a lower multi with a higher BCLK? Anyone tested?

It boosts your QPI, ram and uncore (unless you have to set them lower manually to hit the higher BCLK due to ram/cpu limitation etc) so you should get a little better performance. BCLK is not like FSB though so it doesn't work like it used to with s775.

940 is an old C0/C1 revision, don't even think about buying it...

I were getting system lockups in just one game (Sacred 2) so I decided to rerun a stability test on my CPU overclock, doing 1 hour of Prime:

1.31v CPU, 1.31v QPI, 1.64v ram.

Everything seems fine. I also googled my batch number, and surprisingly this review came up using my batch number running at over 5 Ghz on an EVGA Classified:

So I have a good batch, but mine isnt stable at 4.0 Ghz :(. Must be the 12 Gb then, changing my CPU would be pointless, I have good temps for air cooling, and have reseated the CPU 3 times already to get them, so I really dont want to change either the CPU or Motherboard unless they fail. The hottest core hovers at 70-72 Degress, and I never say it go any higher.

Instead of 1 hour with prime which is pointless, try 1 hour of linx ;)

Oh well, I actually managed to get it stable at 4.2 Ghz at last ..... But the temps ....

Yeah those max temps are a bit too high for my liking. To me 80ºc is max safe, 90ºc is max. Although I have at one point in time ran slightly over 90ºc but to me that's wanting to burn your CPU. Unless you can get some better fans for your heatsink or get a better heatsink, I would back that overclock down a bit. Good job though, temps are the ones kicking your butt now though :(
