I know stew but this cant keep going on...Stew's car is beautifull..mine has had to many track wreck's and is ugle..my vett is pretty but cost to much to drive..im a broke white boy that eat's chip's all day because i cant get a date...mmmmmk so shhhhh b4 Kazoo get's on us for flaming.
i know VW are cheap cars but they are better cars than many cheap american cars and they have nice cars no just the ugly VW new bettle
I see your problem. You've gotta put everyone elses car down because you think your's is the greatest car in the world. Everyone else is also a complete idiot; for example we all believe that the VW Beetle is the only car in the VW Arsenal. Why don't you go get a boner over your car now. No one's saying its a piece of :banana::banana::banana::banana:. I'm simply saying that American cars are not either.
And people wonder why I stay away from anything other than GM..... Its the attitude that people have that makes me avoid them.

but is just my opinion and my experience with cars i have a fiat that is 35 years old and i have a toyota that is 17 years old and i have another toyota that is 11 years old and they all run great and the blazer had 2 years we changed the front train :S so for my experience is that i dont like the american cars i wont lie to you i love mustangs corvettes camaros but the normal cars i really dont like thems

im only 15, but i plan on getting a 93' mustang cobra. gotta love the fox body! my dad drives a focus 3dr thats stock, 2.3l. i might get a universal sc kit for it. also he just got 2001 galant. i havent seen it, but all i know is its from an auction and has subs in the trunk lol.

Currently drive a little old Saxo.. however I'm currently in the process of test driving cars:
* Saab 93 2.0t Aero - test driven.. not too bad.
* Alfa Romeo GT - next to test drive.. rather beautiful italian car.. hopefully the electrics are ok!
* BWM E46 330d - old barn stormer but BMWs are the most common car in the UK.
* Audi A3/4 - although ok these always strike me as dull.. we'll have to see.

Actually, the M3 is not a CSL. It's an M3 with the ZCP (competition package). The package includes CSL Brakes, CSL wheels, CSL ebrake and steering wheel, CSL steering rack, Interlagos Blue Metallic exterior, and the CSL's "track mode" button.

personaly I borrow my pops car till I can get my hands on a caddy. He drives around in a 2002chevy astro. Awsome van/truck whatever it is. managed to burn ruber in it. This thing acelerates like crazy for what it is, suprising realy. My pop drove it with about 3600lb of bricks in it before and while the car wadled around the engine did not seem stressed and I had no problems on the highway at about 65mph. It took a while to stop but he was carefull.
Anyway. im a american iron kind of guy. And to put my two cent in about amrican cars falling apart after a fiew years is total BS. I personaly know of at least two 1/2 million mile+ 15+ year old cars with no problems and they dont stuter either. Both of em are fords and withought looking at the odometer you would never guess the milage. Chevy astros are know to be exelent work vehicles known to hit well over 300k miles while doing heavy work. its not uncomon for a well built gm or ford to go for well over 1/2million miles withought ever taking anything apart exept for normal maintenance and tuneups.
also someone posted that a civic with the same hp as a viper would eat the viper up. I would sugest you look into the old hot rod magasine articles. I recall an article that they built two 500hp cars. one was a buick and one was a honda. The honda cost well over 4times the money to get 500hp and neded high octane race gas to make the whole 500hp and the buick neded pump gas to make 500hp. The buick beat it with no problems weign in at almost twice the weight.
Your litle motor will develop 500hp but it will not make more than 350lb of tourque. a large motor will match hp and tourque and the tourque line is flat. By the time your motor has hit high enough rpm to provide the tourque neded the large motor is alredy down the line. High rpm motors are also very unpredictable when cornering if your arguing weight to power ratio and handling. Remember kids tourque gets you down the line not pure horse power. And I have seen it time and time again, honda civics need well over 10grand of parts before any significant power can be made to ofset the weaknes.
Well, i'm not going to go ahead and completely disagree with that last response.
However, for any modern buick or pontiac engine, i forget which the 3.8litre in question was, you're going to need a ton of work on the bottom end to make a whole lot of horsepower, probably replace a large amount of the engine.
Simply put, it all depends on the engine.
My 1993 Toyota Celica GT engine is a 2.2L, only making 130HP stock.
Now, explain to me why the engine in the 1990 Celica All-Trac, a 2.0litre, has been reported as making a reliable 500-600HP? Granted, it's a turbo. 3GSTE.
Mine is a 5AFSE i believe. The argument could be made that i could get that same 500HP, and i would be faster, because of the larger displacement, and the inherent torque that comes with it. However, the stock block won't take that kindof power, it's not that strong.
Loosely put, different engines take more abuse than others. Mine will be pushing the bottom end at about 180HP, i wouldn't put it much farther than that.

The great thing is, even though it's only 130HP, the gearing is still right to chirp the tires pretty damn hard on the 1-2 upshift.

Oh, and incidentally about the reliability issue. My celica now has 162000 miles on it. All that has ever been replaced on it is as follows:
Brakes all around twice
Just replaced the original clutch two days ago
Fuel tank and lines
Struts and shocks once
Timing belt, obviously
Really, that's it. Runs like the day it was new, and sounds great. yes, i still have the original exhaust on it. Japanese engineering at it's best. Tightest car i ever drove, barring a 1998 BMW M3

I'm not sure if you meant American engines themselves, or engines designed or tuned for the US market. If they're engines designed for the US market, then it'll take the same amount of tuning to get to the same power levels, you'll just start out lower, and maybe even cost more because of emissions crap.
My aformentioned Celica is still on the first spark plugs, after 162k. Driving this thing, it's anything but "over the hill."
Just having a friendly conversation, but what you just pointed out is why US engineering is extremely inefficient. Typically, what are the two most mentioned brands when talking about extremely high miles without rebuild?
Mercedes and Volkswagen. For good reason.
