Trying to find a nice 8GB 1866+ kit which doest have stupid large heat spreaders and will play nice with Llano ( I want something low profile like Kingston HyperX,Corsair Low Profile etc. i.e no extra hight on the PCB) is proving difficult. Am in the UK.. any suggestions anyone ?

i figure i could get at least 3.6ghz and 800mhz gpu (air cooling on an old xigamatek S-1283 and a Corsair 530w psu)
got some extra rams kits to test... 2000 and 1866... anxious to try out memory OC with llano...haven't played with new IMC yet ;)
its to bad the AM3+ 9 series mobos don't come in any Micro-Atx versions (spar case is Micro-Atx only)
otherwise id get a fx-4100 for some OC fun.
looks like ill go the llano route maybe... any new bios coming out for the ASUS F1A75-M PRO for the black editions? hopefully we'll see some more OC reviews asap. these newegg gift cards a burning a whole in my wallet ;)
First off, my setup:
Asus F1A75-V Pro with A8-3870K (XSPC Rasa), GSkill RipjawsX, HDD set to IDE
Initial thoughts:
1. Flashed the latest 2001 BIOS for the F1A75-V Pro and the CPU frequency at POST is always off. It keeps changing with each reset; however, once it boots into Windows, the correct frequency is displayed. I have the same issue with Stilt's modified 1102 BIOS - if this is already known, do disregard.
2. I seem to be able OC better with the 2001 BIOS, i.e. at the same settings, I get POST with 2001 but not 1102.
3. There still doesn't seem to be any monitoring software that reads temps accurately; not even AI Suite's sensors.
4. To boot at 38 multi seems to require a lot of vcore, a lot more than 37.
5. I get BIOS freezes after a bad OC; not sure why. Didn't happen with the Gigabyte board. Also, tried different BCLKs (133MHz, 140MHz, 161MHz, 166MHz) with no success at getting a higher OC with lower multi.
So far (been playing around for about two hours), the best I can do is 103x37=3.811GHz at 1.57vcore/1.3NB (LLC at high), mem at 961.5MHz. It is 2D but not 3D stable.
I'd welcome any suggestions! TheStilt? (I got the Asus board because of your excellent modified BIOS and expertise!) ;)
Might move over to the Gigabyte A75M-UD2H next.
^^ Basically the same setup I just ordered, V Pro, 3870K, Gskill RipjawsX 8gb 1333 7-7-7 (hope they are still BFR).

So a Low Voltage 1600 kit should get me a fair bit of headroom memory OC wise on Llano then ? as trying to find a 1866+ kit with low profile head spreaders is next to impossible I think.
Interested to hear more on this as I was looking at the Asus F1A75 EVO but if there are issues with that and A8-3870K I may go Gigabyte A75 UD2/UD4 or Asrock A75 Extreme6 instead..

Yeah, the 40nm stuff doesn't OC like the 30nm Samsung.
The 1333 CL9 30nm kit however is just as good as the 1600 CL11 ;D
Probably will have to go with the Corsair LP kit then,even though its the wrong colour (which sounds lame but tweaks my OCD a bit)
Really find it frustrating that company's insist on putting those stupid large heat spreaders on everything but the low end modules for the most part. Messes with cooler compatibility and really for the most part is just there for brand differentiation and to look pretty. G.Skill used to be really good for not doing this, but even they have gotten in on the act in recant years it seems.

But then again since Llano seems to love memory being pushed hard maybe there is some merrit here, however still doesn't solve the issue of the large spreaders making cooler compatibility a headache.
Stress test high performance memory at 1.65v or above and you'll know what I'm talking about. 70c is easy to do on any kit, even with a heatspreader, without enough airflow...
I have little experience in memory overclocking beyond any clock and voltage increase that may be as a direct result of a CPU OC. The Intel platforms ive owned over the years haven't really benefited hugely from in depth memory tweaking ether so for me its just been more or less set it and forget it. Hence no issues with heat i guess.
It looks like Llano may change this with its general quirkiness and seeming hunger for memory speed. So I guess ill have to keep that in mind.
Also I could go corsair H80 option for cooling and make the HS height a moot point, but then an £80 cooler on a £100 CPU seems a little unbalanced budget wise and my past experience with the H series (H50) was not a good one overall..
I ordered the GA-A75m-UD2H, let y'all know how it goes..
