74GB and 150GB VelociRaptor on the way?

I judge based on the present, not the past. I just thought his post was rude.

Anyway, when do you guys think the 74gb version is coming out? If the 150gb version is going to be ~$200, that's -33% for -50% capacity...so going by that, the 74 is going to be about ~$135? If so, I want to create a 6x RAID0 array with them. Hopefully, the speed is just as good as the 150/300gb versions.

Anyone knows if the 74Gb version is made of an cut down 150Gb platter ? If thats the case it could be even faster, if the disabled part is the middle portion of the disk.

Why would you want only a 74GB version! My older Raptor is 74GB and I cant wait to upgrade it to one of the 300GB Velociraptors. I think one 300GB VR will be just as quick and less hassel then 6*74GB.

I'm getting 6x74GB for RAID 0. I don't use much space, never have, and so I'd rather have a nice speedy array rather than one big drive.

Some people only use raptors for the OS.

If going for benchmarks raid 0, but if you plan on using it for a while might I suggest raid 5

The release of these drives is good news! 2x150gb or 2x74gb VelociRaptor drives would be a perfect replacement for my current 74GB raptors. I wish they would hurry up and show themselves.

As a network manager I can never figure why PC users want to use RAID to increase Disc access........Its just not going to WORK its not what RAID was invented for. Raid DOES NOT INCREASE SPEED for Joe Average PC user!!!!!

By using 1 300GB velociraptor it will give you many advantages over 6*74GBs;

1, Space, only one Disc required! So you can use a standard Desktop Case!!
2, Power, you only need one connector for one Disc and a standard PSU 500w will do fine!
3, Heat, only 1 Disc to add heat to your system!
4, Vibration, only 1 Disc to add noise and vibration to your system
5, Cost, only 1 Disc to buy
6, Reduced Complexity, 1 Disc is very easy to set up and install.

Have you every heard of rotational latency? ;) I am not the average Joe PC user. RAID 0 is best for large files.

Raid does increase speed by quite a bit for some things like video editing. Also, a lot of the best HD's these days are quiet and don't generate a lot of heat. The cost argument doesn't hold much water because people tend to create arrays of smaller, cheaper HD's. HD's don't use up much power, and finally, it's not that complex to set up a matrix raid on most boards using Intel's controller.

edit: the case and power supply arguments don't apply to almost anyone.

I noticed a big difference going from one 74GB Raptor to two (well...technically it's an 80GB OEM version, not the 74GB...long story). RAID0 has made my system noticeably faster and more responsive.

Running RAID 0 will not cause any reduction in speed of your Hard Drives. But I can not see that running 6*74GB Velociraptors will be worth the CBA of using 1*300GB Velociraptor.

A marginal increase in average access times of 3-5% might be seen and your O/S might load quicker but the rest of the PC hardware is then going to let you down. If you had a Mini Computer board with Multiple Data and Address Busses working Asynchronously/Full Duplex you would indeed see a greater improvement in access and load times. But we are stuck with the Dinosaur of Common Bus Architecture that is the PC!

Yes RAID 0 is very good with Very Large Files but is poor for many Small Files, not to mention setting your Stripe Size to fine tune the system.

If you wanted RAID 0 I would go with the 2*150GB velociraptor option under the rule of KISS.

Got my second Raptor from eBay for $90 shipped :D It's the 80GB OEM version though, not the 74GB like I already had. No problems running them in RAID0 on ICH10R, probably since they're both 16MB cache versions.
