it's the same core, but they're using GDDR3 on the 3850, and GDDR4 on the 3870. Other than the memory, the difference is in the core/memory speeds.

Hardwarecanucks one is the best review so far. Lots of games, lots of resolutions, AA and no AA results. I like it.
But honestly, I don´t trust any review. When I get my card, I will see much more fps than the reviews say, it was the same for HD2900XT, X1950XTX and so on. There are plenty of "cheats" right there, like forcing AA through CCC instead in each game menu. This boost the scores way up. Same goes for AF, forcing it through CCC actually kills perfomance, when it´s selected inside the game menu the fps go up drastically. And trust me, the IQ is exactly the same.
after looking at the canuk threads, I'm feeling there will be hacked firmware coming along.

single slot 3870s? Oc'ed to 800mhz! 1200 ram stock? can it equal the 800gt? and how much is it
http://www.powercolor.com/Global/pro...ProductID=1632
but also whats the diff between the extreme 3850 512 and the non ?
one is ddr3 and the other ddr4 accordingly...
looks like its the volts that need a bump as every card seems to hit that same core speed... i wonder if we will be able to change this in the bios by manipulating it with a hex editor.....(like whats being done with the 2900xt this week)
Yes the canucks did a good honest no bs review. good work
Tomorrow by 4:30 I will have my cards, as well as 2 Duorb coolers from TT :)
ooooh :D
Are the DuOrbs back in stock at Newegg?
edit: They are!
3870 owners (or soon to be) that don't want to use the stock cooler:

Yup. That cooler works VERY well with the 3870 cards.
I don't think RT has voltage modification options for HD3870 cards yet but I will check.
Personally, I can't see modded BIOS coming out for some time but you never know what will happen.
On the other hand, I am experimenting with Crossfire overclocking and even though it does increase my clock frequencies on both cards the performance increase is minimal (only 600 points). ATI needs some updated drivers for Crossfire and Vista x64, that's for sure.
How long will it be till we see some Vmodded RV670's.
gazillion reviews!
why wont they give me one to review :( :p:

Cooler = hideous. :down:
If I were to use any non stock cooler, it'd be the Thermaltake DuOrb, or I'd just get an HIS IceQ 3870 (HIS said they are going to make them :) )
If the cooler works who cares how ugly it is, more over the important point is how much!
