I hadn't heard about XSOS until I read the thread on OCForums. Since I've read about it, I'm very excited :woot:

Noobish Question: If it's based on a Linux Kernel, will it also have the ability to support Linux applications? or because if it is mostly a modified Windows, it will not have support for Linux applications, but only Windows based apps.

Kind of confused. Either way, I'm very excited.

BTW: I didn't see any screenshots or links...did I trip and not see them?

Something seems possibly fishy. That comparison reminds me of pixel shader 1x vs. DirectX 7 a while ago with some games.

Smells like Microsoft is pretending that DirectX 9.0c can't support highly detailed clouds and more detailed water than that! Come on!

Even DirectX 8.1 games are capable of this! :mad:

the actual testing we know of support up to and including 64 processing cores, a 8n viable Processor environment (8 different types of processors working together) and we have the basic support for Hyperthreading. However we lost our hyperthreading Processor before we could expand support for it.

I see you have few knowledge on graphics - I doubt you'd get similar effects not even close :).

I have an areca raid controller, do you know if it will support the windows based drivers?

What security features? have those been sacrificed to the performance god as well?

the most important level of security (the user's mind) is beyond the ability of any programmer to remove or to replace. However there are many useful self-protecting features of the OS. Though we are working to get some anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall/etc apps working flawlessly.

They want to see what the masses (overclocking and gaming masses) want so that next time around they can release a Vista 2.0 and have the "gaming" version as an option thats just my speculation.

It is possible because we did it and we cut a deal with Microsoft
Because of that we can't sell it and we request that all users posses one Microsoft Operating system.
It is under a BSD license

I think it is a very good tactical marketing move. Think of it this way by incresing their compatibility yet offering a free O/S they can push raw *nix and mac further out of the market pool.

Doing this costs them nothing in sales and at the same time broadens their market share and marginalizing the compition, IE the perfect win win situation.

They get a better grip on market, and we get a better OS with windows compatibility with out going full out *nix (Thats how they win, we will still buy their products since we can use them, where if we had gon 100% *nix we would not still be using MS software)

I think I will have to give this a try for sure! Will it suport Hyperthreading? I have a dual Xeon rig that suports hyper threading, right now I only run 2K (Best O/S from Ms IMO) and thus I can only use my two physicle procs with out the HT on each. Will this O/S have the option of looking like the 2K GUI? as I rather like the plain streight forward look.

I have a suggestion/request for the "look" of the OS:
Make it easy to switch out shells. You can make the default shell however you like, but allow people to modify it, or create new ones from scratch, so they can add/remove eye candy or other features. It's something I believe linux did mostly right.

Also, what file systems will it support?
And are you worried at all that if this OS really takes off in popularity that MS will come looking for their check? I don't think I need to remind anyone of Microsoft's history of "sharp" business practices.
