Asus P5B Deluxe 506X9 no mods

I ran a couple of tests to show why RAM speed is so important. Tests were done with Corsair 6400C3.

The first test was run at 3842MHz with 1:1 ratio. Memory speed was 427MHz (3-3-3 timings). Second test was done at 3564MHz with 2:3 ratio and memory speed at 594MHz (4-4-3 timings). I think the results speak for themselves.

I think people have this misconception that CPU speed is the only thing that matters. But even if your CPU is not great, you can still get decent results if you have good RAM and know how to use ratios.

OK here's a thing on the subject of RAM ratios.

I brought some PC2-6400 800mhz GeIL memory. I've installed everything and had to change it in the P5B Bios to DDR2-800 as it wasn't set at that when it came.

Now I'm looking at CPU-Z and the E6600 is at stock (266 FSB) and the memory is set to 400mhz (which should be correct as that's what it is).

The BIOS automatically calculates the memory speed, depending on which ratio you choose.

When you selected DDR2-800, you were telling the BIOS you wanted the memory to run at 400MHz, which is the same as DDR2-800. If you want to run 1:1, select the top memory ratio on the menu which probably says DDR-533 (assuming you're still running FSB at 266MHz).

Yes I am running @ stock right now, as I'm just making sure everything is working inside the case and running fine before I start benching.

So I must run it @ DDR2-533, and if I get 400FSB OC on the E6600 it'll then be running at PC2-6400? - If that's right and makes sense then I'm finally comingto terms with memory related OC stuff. lol.

I was right about the "cool chamber" thing that I said my P180 would be. Temps are far cooler inside the case than outside of it!

I currently have a P5B Deluxe and an E6300. When I overclock, im setting the Memory to 1:1, the FSB to 430, im increasing the CPU voltage to 1.38/1.39 and the Memory voltage to 2.0. Im disabling all the CPU extras (such as Speedstep etc) and the computer boots fine into windows without any problems.

I can have the PC on all day using it for games etc at 3010Mhz. However, when I turn the PC off at night, once I turn it on again in the morning I encounter one long beep and three short beeps and the system fails to post (a memory error im led to belive).

The memory Im using is GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Low Latency Kit as seen here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...R2_Memory.html

Im also getting the False start when turning the PC on after it being overclocked.

Welcome to XS. The temporary shut-off is normal. Many Conroe boards do that.

You might try raising memory voltage to 2.2v. See if that helps. Do you have the same boot-up problem if your memory is running with SPD timings? If not, then maybe you need to adjust your timings when running manual.

Not sure what you mean by SPD timings but if you mean when i set my memory speed manually to 4, 5, 5, 12 then I still had the same problem.

Is 2.2v safe for the memory? Its just that the bios colour turns to red (as opposed to purple for 2.0v)

SPD stands for Serial Presence Detect. It's enabled by default in the BIOS. When you boot up the computer, the BIOS reads information stored on an EEPROM chip on the memory modules. This information includes the size of the modules, data width, etc. Memory manufacturers generally program loose timings into the EEPROM to ensure the board will boot up.

It's possible your RAM is not compatible with the board. The beep code you mentioned does indicate a RAM problem.

lol. I never knew I was being monitored ha ha. Did you want yours up and running before me? If so, it's not fully go. I'm still working on cable management and waiting for Meteor light and 5.25" 80mm fan bay mod.

I'll post my results in this thread when the rest of the parts come in. I know its posted somewhere but whats the max vdim for the p5b deluxe? Btw I ordered a e6600,teamgroup ram and a good psu. I'll do my best to max her out or blow a hole in the wall finding the sweet spot.

The P5B Deluxe is an awesome overclocking board. I managed to get it up to 564 Mhz validated here: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=118197 completely unmodded, retail chipset cooling and cpu cooled by Mach II GT using some Patriot PC2-8000 sticks. As they would fail at around the same speed on a 4:5 divider I believe the motherboard might even do more Mhz with even better memory, but that's pure speculation. I don't have the memory to test it...

Also managed to run superpi @ 530 Mhz fsb 1:1 with 4 sticks of Corsair PC5400UL @ cas 4-3-3-8. Pretty good stuff IMHO. So good in fact, I haven't even tried out my P5WDH at all yet because I've been busy playing with the P5B deluxe :D

Here's a 1M run @ 555 Mhz fsb, with validated cpuz:

The 0614 bios is pretty decent. Pi time is not great. But I won't complain about DDR-1212 @ 4-4-3. :D

Sierra what is the real VCore there? Is CPU-Z reporting that wrongly?

I'm just starting my OC and I have it at 2.88ghz (320*9). The Vcore is @ 1.38v. - so is that crap or good?

It's set to "auto" in BIOS as I'm not really sure when to raise it, so I guess it takes what it needs now. - Just like the memory. I don't know what to set that to either, so that's on auto. The system is running fine though so far.

I was using 1.57v, if I recall correctly. The latest version of CPU-Z does not read the voltage of my ES chip correctly.

You might be able to run higher with 1.38v. I think 3GHz is possible with that voltage.

A-ha! Now I get somewhere. I use BIOS for overclocking, I just prefer that route than AI booster etc.

My CPU temp goes to 37c idled with that now, but it was resonably warm in my room. - is that decent? I mean my old CPU ran at 45c idled (Socket A XP3000+ :p)

Also, as I've always gone with "push it to what the stock volts can take", how do you know when to give it more Volts? and is there a program that shows memory voltages too (as mobo is set to auto)

HELP!!!

Give me some wisdom.

The max I can get is 2.88ghz on (320*9). I have given it more volts (up to 1.45) and nothing. Just won't boot. Not only that, I have to get my old PS2 keyboard and unplug all USB devices as the system will freeze otherwise.

My memory is GeIL PC2-6400 although CPU-Z lists it as different to that and only offers the DDR800 4-4-4-12 on a 266FSB (which is fine as it's then 1:1).

But I just want to know, is the 320FSB limit due to the x9 multi? Or is there something else I need to do? I've disabled Speedstep thing.

Also, I can't get full details on my memory sticks so I really don't know what my manual settings would be.

can anyone shed some light on this please?!?!?!?
