Ugh.. anything above 1.45V causes prime to fail after 7 minutes...
I checked my PWM IC temps and they were over 70C!
Are there any alternatives? Expert? New Asus board?
I don't really want to spend $200 on a new mobo especially since I don't care about SLI... They need to make a non SLI verison of the expert :(
put a fan over the PWM...
Is it still a issue that the Ultra-D is overvolting Dualcore Opterons?
yeah you should jump over to DFI-street under Opteron overclocking section....there are a few posts there of people recording actual and reported voltages with up to 0.11v overvolting witnessedQuote:

the pc is dual prime stable goes all the way up to 47c this is on water . this kinda sucks i like the x2 better so far

i.e. i sold opteron 146 cabye 0540fpbw which did 3000mhz at 1.568v on my rig but buyer in 23-24C ambient managed 3000mhz at 1.5v for the same cpu heh

how does one do properly burn in for just one core ?

just put it in yesterday and it's running 20 hours burn in smoothly so far at 2880 mhz on water at 1.48v at 26 deg smartguardian cpu temp under load. haven't tried any faster yet. Seems more stable and much cooler than my 4800+ X2 at simimlar sppeds.

there is no way a dual core Opteron is a 35W CPU...........there is clearly an issue with that TCaseMax reading as well as 49C everyone is getting...........these CPUs are all operating well above that so the reading is incorrect................i don't know who the creator of that software is but they need to revise that with these dual core opteronsQuote:

You're probably right about the 35W. I just did a little experiment just for you. I have been testing at 1.475*109.6% for several days. Idle is 24C, load 46C. I bumped up to 1.5*109.6% and load temps rose to 51C when the system froze. I had this exact same behavior with my Ultra-D - once I got over 50C, I would either freeze or crash. So I don't know what to tell you. I think the best idea is to get those temperature readings directly! I can't wait to hear your results...Quote:

Stock voltage @ max 2.5ghz (11x225) dual prime stable, anything higher, like 11x230 and it won't even boot into windows. Running RAM on lowest divider, check sig for more specs.
Temps are a high though, around 50-53c load w/ big typhoon
I know it can clock higher, but I'm not willing to give it more juice.
Going to remount HS when I get home from vacation.
Would I automatically get higher clocks at STOCK VOLTAGE if I solved my temperature problem?
PS. Don't even ask about LDT, its fine. (3x)

I have a DFI SLI-DR Expert, and I am getting extremly low idle and load temps on my Opty 170. Idle with an XP-90 is around 22c load is around 29c. No way in hell the actual temp is this low. I completly agree with your observations.
BTW how are you doing with your 0536 chip I have the same one and havent started testing its limits.

Just received my Opteron 170 from NCIX Canada.
Stepping is: CBBWE 0541 RPMW
I think someone said that is a crappy stepping...oh well. Will post stability result during the weekend, but for now I'm typing this Dual-Priming at 2500mhz stock volts of course. Temps seems okay for now: 36C CPU , 36C PWM (watercooling and 120mm fan on PWM)
I would be happy with at least 2700mhz, but certainly wish more.

Yeah none of the dual core opterons seem to be reporting correct temps at least on DFI boards.. I have an ultra-d and my temps are supposedly cooler than the 148 I had with the same voltage as this 165.. with 1.4v and 2600MHz+ I get ~35C with BT. I am wondering if the max stable HTT at a given voltage (lets say stock) is affected by temperatures.
For instance, most 0530s go to 2.7ghz at least on STOCK voltages with normal temps.
My 0530 only goes up to 2.5ghz on stock voltages, but I have higher temperatures.
Is temperature limiting the maximum clockspeed?

Ummm strange... 2500mhz on stock voltage dual prime stable till 4+hr, but unable to do dual super pi 32M ....
got a 'Hot' one here (thats hot running - RichUK has same core and same problem on MSI Neo2 Plat)
Relaxed the mem timings and set the mem to 166. Vcore 1.42 CPUx10 failed to boot to windows at 2750MHz but loaded at 2600MHz one core failed prime after 3.5 hours and temps where hitting 42C - Not room temp ( PC case is in a cuboard which is externally vented via two 100mm tubes and fans was about 5c last night when testing)
the CPU was running cooler in my MSI neo2 but have two gf7800 in there atm so more heat and the artic coolers havnt arrived yet
Going to check the HS/CPU interface as this was the first time I used a rice grain size off AS5
Also have the XP90 over the cooling fins off the heatpipe so will turn it 180degrees as see if I get better airflow/cooling will help
But no impress at all with CPU :( but havnt many here in the UK -might sell it all the same

Well, I've been trying for over a week to get my Expert to play well with my G.Skills using my 175. Tried five different BIOS's and literally every combination of Driving Strength/Data Strength/MAL/Read Preamble. For the life of me, I couldn't find a combination that would let me run CAS 2.5 at 1T stably. My longest prime run was 59 minutes, always failing large FFT's. The system just felt unstable. I knew it was memory related but couldn't make the necessary adjustments.
So last night I said to hell with it and switched to 2T. All my problems were immediately solved! Running like a champ now. Obviously, this is not the ideal solution, but until I can figure out where I have been going wrong, 2T is where I be. All shots below at data/drive strength 7/1 (the only combination I had luck with).

So my final verdict on the Expert: it's a keeper. I have been able to match my max overclocks with both my 148 and 175 on my Ultra-D. More importantly, the Ultra-D/175 combo had dangerously inaccurate voltage reporting problems (.11v over CPUZ under load). The Expert is much more accurate - the above prime shot reads 1.591v with a DMM under load and 1.579v idle. Once I get my memory sorted out at 1T, this system will be a beast.
I have the same issue. At 2T I could run 270x10 @ 1.5-2-2-5 and now I can't go over 235x10 2-2-2-5. I'm not sure which one is worth it yet, though. Giving up CAS 1.5 or 1T...Quote:

I can't go past 239 at 1T even with a divider... Pretty weird and it starting to piss me off. Also this 0530TPMW does't do as good as my 0534SPMW (170). Maybe it needs to burn it longer (popped it in yesterday). I was able to dual prime it for six hours at 200x10-2-2-2-5-1T. I'll dual prime it overnight 239x10-1T :(.
Getting a little farther than before FYI. I can get the system to boot fine 250x10 2-2-2-5-1T@stock 1.300v/3.33v with no memory divider. SP2004 fails on core 0 in less than a minute but core 1 keeps going (small and large FFT). SP runs a lot longer with 2-3-2-5-1T ATM... Temp report still bothers me. ITE shows 27c and my naked probe on the side of IHS 33.7c.Quote:

Well, I'm kinda disappointed in this chip... If it was a 170, it would be fine, but not a 175.
I can get 2.6Ghz Dual Prime Stable at 1.5V and 48*C
Can't get 2.65Ghz at 1.5V though.
This is on a TT BT lapped with AS5 and a 78CFM 120mm fan (thermaltake case fan).
As I type this I am running 1.55V through the CPU
2.64Ghz at 49*C running Prime Dual Small FFTs.
Seems stable.
I really wanted 2.7 out of this chip, but it ain't gonna happen unless I water cool and prolly have to take the IHS off.
The A8N32-SLI could be limiting me, but I doubt it. Some parts of this board are confusing that's for sure. Also, CPUZ doesn't show the (+0.02V) that I set in the bios to get the voltage I'm at. Kinda weird, but PCProbe shows the correct voltage.
I think I may try some more of the funky mobo settings, like overvolting the Hypertransport bus and North Bridge.
The chip average I guess, I may look at getting a 170 to test out.
If I try for the insane 1.6V, I'll let ye know... also, not done testing 1.55 yet.
Been running prime for 15 minutes now at 2.64.... Hmmm.

Guys, I need help. I can't get my opty 170 to 2.4ghz without 1.64 volts! I am running at 7x300 right now and memtest comes up without any problems for 24hrs. I really want at least 2.4, but my second core keeps failing almost instantly. I've tried lowering my memory and I even tried 240x10, but it didn't work. I am definetly not a newb to overclocking, but the DFI has alot of new options. Any help is appreciated.

So guys, when it comes to OC, i'm pretty much a noob to the ins and outs.. I finally got my parts in on friday and put my system together over the weekend. From a non-OC perspective, having a new setup is great (I moved up from a p3-1ghz !!).

The temps are inaccurate there because I had taken the screen shot after I turned the fans down and let it cool off. It's more accurate to say it goes up to around 52-55C loaded wtith the fans @ 5800 rpm (Venus 12). I did raise VC up to 1.45, and had the chip @ 2.8, but the average non-loaded temps were a bit too high for my tastes (48-49C steady). Stability-wise it was fine. Currently I'm still running it at stock VC and 2.7 ghz. Heat looks to be the main issue to handle now (what else is new).

Before blaming the CPU you should try it in a real enthusiast mobo like an Ultra D, or even better, an Expert

Doh, I'm sorry, I have the Lanparty. I was updating my specs here at work and got confused.
i have a CCBWE 0543TPMW 170 coming in soon, as well as another unknown 170. Will report results by the weekend.
Seems that core 0 is weaker than core 1 as core 0 is only stable <2565 where as core 1 will only start failing P95 around 2650. Tried using cpuburnk7 for 10 hours today but has made little difference.
Any ideas on how I can improve the second core? More burn in?
Try to burn it in some more. If it works then thats great, and if it doesn't then you're no worse off.
I get my motherboard back this week (thursday?) from rma and I'll be testing my opteron. I had 2.80ghz before I upped the voltage and was pretty stable at 2.95ghz with a little bump (no errors after a few hours of prime but not really extensive testing). I was shooting for 3.0ghz when my mobo died so lets hope for the best. Also, this will be the first time that I will test burning in myself so I'll be sure to report on that.
