How does the new BIOS do with 1000MHz+ mem speeds?
Printable View
Flashed to 903 and resume from sleep while overclocked works perfect now. :D
Also, as an added bonus, my memory bandwidth has gone up slightly and so have my 3DMarks...
EDIT: Scratch that...S3 worked a few times but gave me the infamous LOCKED the last time I tried.
*Updated Bios FrontPage Links with new Beta Bios
Yup buddy.
Vent is about a foot square and is required by law as ventilation for gas heating fumes. It just so happens that it sits nicely at back of RAD roughly 4 inches away. I have 3 Yate Loons pulling air from vent in through RAD :) Works rather well, until summer time comes along, when I reverse the fans to blow instead of pull ;)

Woah! This is huge! So can any others verify that sleep mode works now (especially in Vista x64)
This is why I waited to buy this board.
Can we assume ASUS will fix sleep on their other x58's with a BIOS update?
I've got my 920 and am stuck deciding on a board. I HAVE to have sleep ability.
I might have to do the same....Did they cross ship to you? My CPU gives me very low scores in benchmarks with HT on. My CPU scores are only 200 points higher in 3dmark with HT on and my shader scores nosedive....This happens even at stock speeds. If I turn Ht off I get huge gains although my CPU score stays at about 6500.....
Well, here is my 3dmark vantage score with physx off and quad sli on. This is with 4.1ghz in turbo mode with HT on. I can't go any higher with HT on no matter what voltage.....Scores fine with HT on, I just don't understand why 3dmark06 gives me way lower FPS and scores with HT on....Is there a patch I need to install? Maybe a config I have to mod?? Oh, I also decided to post some picks of my completed I7 rig!:P

So have we determined that QPI should be 0.05v lower than the vcore? I remember reading that somewhere along the line. Like If I need 1.45vcore to hit 200 x 21 then I should set 1.40v QPI?
yes, I use 1.45 qpi with voltage at 1.5v
So with the new bios (903) I am able to clock at 3800 mhz (HT on) with only 1.25 vcore and 1.25 vqpi. Nice...
Next up, to see if I can lower my volts for 4200mhz (HT on, Turbo on) which currently requires 1.41 vcore and 1.35 vqpi.
hmm sry guys for my noobish style :)
but do u mean that the new BIOS update made :
- to disappear problem of cold-boot ?
- to disappear problem of overclocking ?
Yes, they cross-shipped. It only takes 2-3 business days. I discussed my problems with the Intel tech first and he almost immediately said that it sounds like there is a cache problem on my chip and that I should RMA it. It took a few days to sort things out initially because I was doing this over the holidays, but after the holidays were done everthing was finished in 2 business days.
Honestly though, I am not sure that your chip is faulty. Getting the i7 920 to 4.0GHz+ is very good, and not a lot can do this. You just think that they can because all people that post on this forum go for the extreme OCs. A more realistic target for the i7 920 is 3.8GHz - 4.0GHz. As you can go past that you are okay.
The whole business with 3DMark06 may have to do with the OS more than anything. Are you running it in Vista or XP and do you have all service packs installed? 06 exhibits some strange behavior in Vista (at least Vista 64-bit) so I do not tend to run it in Vista. I tend to stick to XP for 06.
Also, keep in mind that 06 is quite old so anomalies are to be expected when running on newer hardware.
I've had the cold boot issue with my second rampage build using the dominator series of memory from day one. I had to go back to 0705 to reduce the number of cold boot failures. Also, had to lower the dimm voltage. I installed the 0903 beta bios last night and loaded setup defaults, had 4 or 5 cold boots and no issues so far. I'm hopeful they will lick this issue.
I've got my i920 running 4.2ghz w/ turbo on and did a maximum FPU stress test with Prime 95 and it ran fine for 13 hours. I then went to the Blend test so that the RAM was tested. I have 6gb Corsair Dominator 1600mhz running @1600mhz with all auto settings for timings except I brought it from 9-9-9-30 to 8-8-8-24 and 1.65v. It made it through 59 minutes of the test before crashing the comp. Any advice on where to go from here to gain some RAM stability? I'm currently going back to 9-9-9-30 to see if that fixes the problem but even if it does that means my RAM doesn't run at what it is stated it can do. Any help would be appreciated. If it helps I'm running BIOS 0805.
As dejanh says..,I wish more people would be satisfied with chips doing 4.0.., pushing more out of them needs extreme cooling and more tweaking...
Look at this 06 in Windows 7.., note loose timings.., not always tight is the trick.., rams are 1866 9-9-9-24

Does anyone else have this gap in clocks between 3.93ghz and 4ghz with a 19x multi? If I set it to 208 in bios, it will go down to 206.8, and if I set it to 209, it will go up to 210. 208 and 209 just plain don't work, which is pretty annoying, as 210 is already hitting the wall where I have to spike up my voltage to above 1.3v for any stability in prime and thus making the temps rise through the roof. The 20x multi is really unstable approaching 200, so 197 or 198 are not options as well, as they bluescreen on startup. Is there something I can do about this gap?
I got 4.05ghz with HT on turbo off. It was running at1.44v, but it bluescreened after 4 hours.....It bluescreend on prime 95 on a lrage fft, so it memory related. I upped vqpi to 1.4 from 1.3 asnd see if that makes a difference. Maybe up the cpu voltage a bit...
Using beta 0903 just now I got the cold boot, start-poweroff then hang cycle again. I'll try lowering the dimm voltage back to 1.57 and try again.
Yeah I expereinced my first Locked issues today. I then powered it off manually and turned it back on and it stated OC failed which has happened a couple of times, but I know the OC is ok. Esp being 10 hours prime stable !
I know that the Maximus formula did the same thing- it took them awhile to fix it though.
Im sure they'll get to it.
btw are you from vancouver?
Hi,
Im new
(sorry for my bad English, i'm Italian)
there is nobody with the ram that I have in signature that stay to 4.0ghz under 1.43 of v.core?
I have not yet seen any, can be the fault of the Corsair Dominator 1666 or a limit of CPU?

seems 3dmark 06 really favors ati and vantage really favors nvidia.
Ive had odd scores with 3dmark 06 and the new 180.84 drivers from nvidia- some of the runs were faster but some of them were really slow (meaning the tests themselves)
But vantage was smoking fast- 36K with Physx on
Are you running vista 64? I have strange issues with 3dmark o6 also. some tests are faster, while the next test will be slower....Funny thing is, when you turn off HT You get much higher FPS and scores in 3dmark06!! Vantage goes a bit higher on cpu though!!
Starting to put my componants together see below for setup, anyone using an Core I7 965 be able to give me some tips on settings would be greatly appreciated.

3.8GHz at 1.2V  Me thinks not bad
What is the clock skews for? should we leave them on auto or disable them?
anyone can help me out here, I just put my machine together, asus extreme ii with latest 903 bios, intel 920, memory kingston 2000 hz memory, evga 8800gtx and corsair 1000hx.
Everything set at default works fine. When I go to the bios and enable the XMP settings for the memory, it shows up and I choose profile 1. But when I save the settings, the machine boots and tells me overclocking failed.
Shouldnt the XMP settings work without anything other adjustments?
Yes, in theory, but as all chips past 1333MHz are outside of Intel specifications their specific support is really dependent on how well the board manufacturer has done in terms of making the given DRAM compatible with their board. Quite likely, you DRAM is not "compatible" in that sense. But, don't despair. Just set all of the settings for your DRAM manually and try it that way. You will have to set the following parameters.
QPI/DRAM voltage
DRAM voltage
DRAM timings
Refer to the specs of your DRAM for values to use here. Quite likely you will need QPI/DRAM at about 1.65V, DRAM at 1.65V, and DRAM timings at something like 9-9-9-24-2T to start.
Keep in mind that QPI/DRAM voltage past 1.35V is outside of Intel's maximum specification (see http://download.intel.com/design/pro...hts/320834.pdf, page 22, Vtta and Vttd) and that there is at least a chance that going beyond this limit may kill your chip in the long run.
Thanks for the reply, this is the same ram. How is it he is able to just set it at XMP?
Kingston KHX16000D3K3/3GX
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/834/3/
Actually, he is not using XMP it seems. He just showed that XMP can be set, but he goes on to do a manual configuration of his memory. Try it. I found XMP to be less stable too than manually configuring my DRAM, Dominator 1600MHz.
Edit: I forgot to mention something in the OP. To reach 2GHz memory the system must be over-clocked, so you could also be failing there, but try manual config first.
ic
also noticed with some ppl that with different c states enabled
their everest scores for write is much higher.
personally i think this is a just a software flaw during the c state transition to give false readings
even booting takes longer with cstate..
cstate disable - vista 2 1/3 bars
cstate enable - vista 5 bars
jcool was having a debate with me about orthos
when he tested with prime only
orthos priority 10 like above vs linx latest version which stresses all cores
different in temp is only 3 C.
but voltage requirement is the same.
my best guess on this is because the IMC is being stressed also.
but he has a point that if i was running qpi voltage of 1.65 etc .. the difference is going to be bigger
but that defeats the purpose.
small fft is just to show the vcore
and memtest hci to show qpi dram voltage
with final confirmation of linx is a better way
the above is 72C
for linx is 75C
obviously he didnt test orthos and made a conclusion
prime for i7 is pointless as smallfft and memtest hci would show any errors
ok for skewing for noobies out there
when do u skew
first skewing doesnt give u lower voltages
skewing corrects ram speeds to cpu speeds and also IMC waves
so when to skew.. when ure running orthos like the above screenshots
suddenly it will bsod like in 20-30 minutes.
theres two possibilities
1.the LLC is at the borderline on the low vcore or the high vcore stress is fluctuating
2.skewing to correct the waves to be insync.
for 3.6ghz at set 1.2 i need cpu/ioh delay both at 200
for 3.8ghz at set 1.216 i need cpu at delay 300 ioh at 100
again this takes experience
those who clocked ddr3 with rampage extreme on skewing will find this board easy.
0903 vs 0805
mem tables for 1n vs 2n are different
1600mhz Cl7 bclk 200 1n
0805
DRAm A trip Delay = 58
DRAM B trip Delay = 60
DRAM C trip Delay = 63
0903
DRAm A trip Delay = 50
DRAm B trip Delay = 52
DRAM C trip Delay = 54
0903 linx failed in 4 passes
0805 linx passed 50 passes
so back to 0805 for 1600 Cl7 bclk 200
This is indeed not bad  but i find a strange thing, in CPU-Z you're multi is 19 x 200 = 3.8GHz but if you look @ RealTemp it says 17 x 200 = 3.4GHz.
http://i42.tinypic.com/15zkvav.jpg
Now to be sure this is not a flaw or something i did the same test and with me it says CPU-Z 18 x 200 = 3.6GHz and RealTemp also 18 x 200 = 3.6GHz, weird ha
http://i39.tinypic.com/2moouhs.jpg
well ocaddict i know the clock is because of c state enable for cpuz
but for real temp..hmm interesting
also for linx i usually test in windows diagnostic mode
cause u can use max mem and for 3gb kit 2.5gigs free
hello from germany. know somebidy something about a vdropmod? pencil or something else? my i920 drop and with the llc it is to much vcore for my opinion :( something exist to stable it?
eh llc increase the voltage for everybody afaik
set 1.2 example is actually 1.22v on my dmm on load
RealTemp accurately shows C-state transitions, CPU-Z does not. The screenshot was taken after the run was complete at which point the multiplier drops as the load is removed. There is nothing strange about it. It's just transitions at work :)
Edit: I will attach a screenshot here (see bottom, but later when XS stops failing to upload) of how everything looks while the stress test is running...
Yup, indeed, LLC will overvolt your set voltage somewhere in the range of 0.02V - 0.03V. Not really a bad thing IMHO.
hm, cpuz show at 3,8ghz 1,208v. in bios i set 1,225 for this and everest 1,25-1,263 :( this is al showing while prime is running
Anyone else having problems with 0903 BIOS? Sometimes I can't get past the boot from CD page, even though no media is in the drive and the next boot disk is my HDD??
Also USB devices (USB HDD mainly) is dropping in and out. I have also got a message saying I should connect my USB device to a faster port (in bold) even though it already is!
Weird.
I seem to be having issues with the third PCIex16 slot on the board. Last weekend I started having issues getting tri-sli enabled kept getting unknown VGA adapter errors. After some testing and moving cards around it appears the third slot is dead on this board. Device manager only shows 2 gtx 280 while three are installed all cards work fine in the top or middle slot single or SLI. No cards work in the third slot single dual sli or tri-sli. Anyone have any ideas I can try before RMA. I have already completed a clean install of both vista 64 and XP 32.
Thanks
Don't know if this helps but: have you put the PCIe configuration at 16x-8x-8x and not at 16x-16x-1x, don't think a VGA can run on PCIe 1x...
Thanks jasonelmore, I followed the bios guide you made and hit 4.2mhz on a 920.
http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/m...i74200mhz2.jpg
The option to change speed is not available when I get into the advanced section of the bios. It is greyed out leading me to beleive it may be something with the board. With the PCie not functioning I decided to play with the memory a little and here the best so far for me.
http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w...th_2000Mhz.jpg
It's greyed out if you have the setting on auto, If not you can manually change from 16-16-1 to 16-8-8
I can't get my Corsair 1600mhz 6gb kit to sit stable at all at 1600mhz with 200 bclk, any tips?
Doubt its the RAM.
Unfortunately if I populate the third slot I can not select any speed the selection gets greyed out and I can not see the video card in device manager or in Everest. I have removed the card and selected 8 x 8 however as soon as a card is installed it eaither hangs on "init rom" or boots and the card is not visible in the system device manager.
Thank you for the suggestion however at this point I will set up the RMA as I know the configuration of the setting had previously worked the way it is set up now in the bios.
Thanks again for the help and suggestions your time is appreciated.
The I/O shield is preventing the motherboard from fitting inside my Lian-Li V1000B Plus II! How can I fix this?

Well I got this OC pretty fast, I know I could hit more- but im going to play some games and just sit with this as my 24/7, btw it primed for over 10 hours, I ended it before any errors came up but Im sure it wouldve chugged away! Ambient temp was pretty high- But my temps are pretty high anyways because of the NB-Max block. I have the NBMAX and GTZ on one loop using a PA-120.2 with quiet fans. Prob shouldve thrown the NB max on the GPU loop.
Its very stable in Windows, and I ran a 3 hour loop of 3dmark06 2 days ago with no faults (with 3 gtx 280s @ 756/1512/2484)

Hit 35K on 3dmark. Could prob get round 36K with better drivers and a tweaked windows.

whats a good set of tri channel memory for this board, its the last thing i need, and i want to make sure i get a good set matched to the board. whats everyone having luck with?
i was thinking Corsair XMS3 Dominator 6GB 3x2.
thanks
I have that kit. It's served me pretty well overall. I managed to OC it completly stable to 1900MHz 8-9-7-20-1T timings with just 1.43750V QPI/DRAM and 1.65681V DRAM. The best (confirmed stable) timings I got at default voltage settings for 1600MHz (1.35V QPI/DRAM, 1.65V DRAM) are 7-7-7-20-1T.

I have overclocked them a bit. I have'nt found the max overclock but i'm thinking I can go a little higher on everything. I can't wait to get this baby on water.
Could anyone install liquid cooling on Rampage 2 Extreme, on NB and SB? Are any problems with buying for this motherboard?
PS. Soory for my english ;)
Installed 0904. They seem to be on to something here. At a quick look I did not notice any apparent changes in the BIOS, but they seem to have done something...
My new result running at 4.2GHz with Uncore:QPI 1:1 3.6GHz each. Lower voltages on the core too, by about 0.032V from before...all on air.
C-states are on, hence the lower post-run clock visible in RealTemp.
Not bad
I got the 0904 bios running. I had to use Asus Update in stead of EZ Flash. But it worked. First results so far is that i can run DDR1600 @ 7-7-7-20-1T @ 1.65 vdimm in bios. QPI-Uncore 1:1 3600. With lower vcore.
To bad i didn't unlock the 21*210 bclk.......The system works fine but when i click prime95 i get an instant BSOD. I can game, browse @ 4400 mhz but no 4 core load.
I seems to me that there more uncore selections possible with this new bios.
Test those DRAM timings using memtest86+ 2.11 for at least 1 pass before you declare the timings stable. I had to go back to 7-8-7-20-1T in 0904 after memtest86+ 2.11 reported errors about 40% into the test.
If you are willing to keep the proc. at 4.4GHz just for gaming and browsing you may as well disable all but two cores. That will allow you to clock higher/more stable with lower voltages.
IMHO it kind of defeats the purpose if you do not run HT on though on i7. You may as well be using a C2D then. i7 CPU is intended for using it with all 8 threads, but I guess it depends on everyone's workload. I need all 8 threads when doing development.
Is it wise to by an asus motherboard now these days with the cpu override bug thing?
Well, the boards are very solid overall, only major issue IMHO that remains is the TDP override missing from features. Hopefully this comes soon and Asus will be the de-facto reigning king of i7 motherboards.
Right now they may get their rear end handed to them when the EVGA X58 Classified comes around if they do not fix the TDP issue.
To be honest I have no idea what this new bios has done, my saved settings for 200x20 turbo and ht on are less stable than before. I've had another tweak around with settings, no obvious difference to me at all, maybe im missing something.
also the change to this bios description is very vague, its a bit like psycholgical warfare:p:
djaneh, can you list your enabled/disabled settings in cpu config please?
thanks.
