Wow.....1/8 heatshrink is a hell of a pain to get on but it sure does look nice.
I have my black and red sleeving (with matching shrink)from kirk at murdermod I have an extra 24 pin atx modular cable courtesy of ultra power supply's I have psu modding toolkit from sunbeamtech also I proper crimping tool if needed. My question now is about keeping the proper order of the wire to the connectors.
I am going to be shortening the cable to fit my setup and it will require me to remove a good 6 inch chunk of length out of the cable . What's the best way to keep the cables in the proper order while doing them all at the same time? I f i do it one wire at a time it will not come out even. Any ideas on how I can make it a perfect job and wire it back together properly?

60 meters of sleeving later..
get us some close up's of your sleeving Laine (and let us know what sleeving it is!) ;)
Thought I might add in a little tutorial on how to do the 6-8pin plugs which come with some power supplies like the Corsair.
These are the tools that you'll need, as well as a ruler, and a heat gun and of course the sleeving (Thanks to Nils at MDPC for this sleeving, beautiful stuff that it is!).
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dreamax...s-required.jpg
Make a slit all along one side of the heatshrink which is covering the ring on the cables. Then blast the you know what out of it with the heat gun. And it'll end up like this:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dreamax...heatshrink.jpg
It will look like this after you tear all the heatshrink off it. Covered in disgusting gluey stuff, but it's ok, you can scrape it all off easily enough.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dreamax...orial/ring.jpg
Because I didn't need the +2 part of the 6 to 8 pin cable, I just removed it.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dreamax...move-8-pin.jpg
Then I basically removed one wire at a time, which took it out from the little ring. This is probably the easiest way, saves you having to cut that ring (god knows what it is made out of, I tried to go at it with the dremel but it took too long)!

http://members.iinet.net.au/~dreamax...-at-a-time.jpg
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dreamax...ial/2-done.jpg
And you end up with this, all finished and pretty :)
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dreamax...l/finished.jpg
Train the cables after to make gentle bends, as they sometimes get kinks in them from being all tied up in the box.
Hope that was helpful!:up: :yepp:
It's genuine MurderMod sleeving, it turned out to be cheaper then the one at Elfa when you include shipping.
also MM's is 3 threaded, I think Elfa's is 2 threaded, don't know though.

dreamaxx;
Nice guide, quite some nerves you have voiding the warranty.
Is it possible to get some 8pin blocks for the PSU and 6pin blocks for the GPU and make a custom cable, and still have the possibility to do a RMA?
Thats an AMAZING idea. Mind if I copy?
EDIT:
Also, has anyone had any experience with PRO POWER sleeving?

http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-power/pet...0m/dp/CBBR6178
^-Would either of those be any good for individual wires and fan cables? I'm thinking I'd see less through the 2-7mm that the 1-6mm, because it's be more 'bunched up' @ about 2mm, right?
I'm gonna redo all the sleeving I've done so far, which thankfully isn't too much. ;)
I can not get 1/8" tubeshrink to go over 1/8" sleeving to save my life. What am i doing wrong? I tried heating the ends of the sleeve so stray fibers aren't hanging everywhere, but then it's impossible to get back over the cable without straying the threads again.
I usually ended up lightly melting the ends so that they started to group together, then carefully slid the heatshrink over one end, then the other, took some patience, but

I bought some of this http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/pr...p?SKU=CBBR6179 I haven't got any murdermod to compare it with but that may change shortly. We use it at work but cpc are one of our preferred suppliers :) I can send a small piece to anyone who wants to do a side by side. The worst one I've had was the Ryan kits. What's the difference between Polyester/Terephthalate and plain polyester?
Hi,
Here some more MDPC-X sleeving too :)
This is my first sleeving and first MDPC-X in Bulgaria at all :P My project is far from finished, but sleeving is almost done.
Thank you Nils !

Great guide, bookmarked for future use. I going to try this on a set of cans :)
No worries m8 :) It does come creased flat on a roll in a cardboard box. it feels fairly rigid. pics in a few days. Can anyone comment on what the techflex stuff like? It comes in a plethora of colours which is great.
http://www.techflex.com/prod_PTN.asp
and available in the UK from Hypex yay!
techflex is cheap, plasticy feeling and shows wires. . . . .
if you go down the techflex road, the 'Clean Cut' variant is the best (and closet to MM stuff imho)
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/5...gediamater.jpg
Tried out the MDPC custom "SLI-bridge diameter" sleeving.:rofl:
And yes, boredom striked again.
This is Techflex from PPC's that I bought, used for 2 cables, decided it was crap, and now on the search for an alternative since MDPC is out of stock for what seems like forever

Techflex PET Cable Sleeving
haha sleeving the bridge now that's original. Now to sleeve the DVI, power cords, mouse, keyoard and speakers. =D
Having your cables showing isnt a big thing if your using an Ultra X3 lined PSU. The cables are black so its perfect for the PPCs Techflex PET sleeving. I am using it now but the 1/8" Heatshrink for 1/8" sleeving is a pain, Decided to go the next size up for heatshrink.
I personally use 1/4" black w/red tracer in my work- but I don't do the unisleeving/etc, atm I limit mine to fan controllers, fans, front panel connections...and I use the techflex 3/8" "carbon" for my sata cables (its a mix of black and clear)
my personal opinion is that its not very often people are going to be inspecting a PC with a magnifying glass and fine tooth comb, most observers *at least where I live* would be in an ooh ahh type state just seeing cables that arnt normally sleeved being sleeved (heck, most of the people I know go pretty gah gah over regularly sleeved power supplies)
however, IF I could find a decent supplier of the cleancut at decent shipping rates to canada (aka not what cableorganizer has) I'd more readily consider using that- as from what I've noticed, that SEEMS to be the general base of what the murdermod sleeving kits use (techflex can "custom" make cabling for sufficent sized orders)
wow bentleya that cable looks absolutely sick, incredible.
im not saying they do, thats just my personal guess, from everything I've seen of the cleancut variety and of the murdermod stuff, they are very similar
that and techflex can custom create sleeving with sufficient sized orders, which (with absolutely NO surprise) murdermods can do in spades
Well, for optimal thermo-capacitance, you will want a polymer resin fiber with a halide core woven to 60 strands per inch in 5 strand bundles.
That was actually just me talking out of my ass. It really doesn't matter what material it is made of as long as it isn't something that attracts dust. The weave is only important for aesthetics... some people want it to only partially conceal what is inside the sleeving, others want it completely concealed. Aside from that, there really is no difference.
Guys, what color of sleeve blend to 24pin and 2x6pin cable's in my case?

Harumph I didn't get one of those with mine lol whats her name?
Nice guide, dreamaxx. I used the brute force method to remove the round thingies from my Corsair HX1000. I cut them the best I could and then took a pair of thin needle nosed pliers and ripped the heck out of them 'til they came off (and we wonder why most of my worklogs have blood in them :p:). So far the PCI-E cables are working just fine without their little protectors:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/4...60_5pgwG-M.jpg
(If I were doing this build now, I'd go ahead and shorten the wires, rather then leaving them long. It works fine in the cube, but would be a mess in smaller cases. I've since found it's quite easy to cut the wires and just crimp new pins on)
heh, i just took a hammer to that nasty nasty metal ring around the PCI-E cables on my Cossair 750W modular :yepp: worked well :p::rofl:
You shouldn't remove those, you'll all get ill from electromagnetic radiation now :P
I don't know if anyone has said this and I don't feel like reading through 20+ pages, but Fry's sells some good stuff. However, I'm pretty sure it only comes in black (which doesn't seem to be a problem for most of you). I think (here) it's $7 for 20' of 1/8". I have no idea how that price compares to MDPC stuff. It also seems a little stiff, but I don't know if that's normal or not. It's a tight weave and I really liked it. Just my :2cents:
On the topic of 6 to 8 pin PCIE cables... I am making my own custom cable for the my 4890 which uses one 6pin and one 8pin connector. I am starting with a Dual 6 pin cable. It appears that the difference between the 6 and 8 pin cables is 2 grounds. does this sound right?
yep, just 2 grounds, all you need to do is split the grounds from another one on the cable
awesome pics! and great product Nils! two thumbs up!

wow Driver, that is NICE
I don't have the guts to sleeve a whole PSU like that. The thing fails you're screwed.
A+ work! I was thinking about doing that to my Galaxy EVO because of the retarded looking yellow dashes in the stock sleeving, but no matter how reliable it is... it hates my mobo.
nascasho-I'm with you on the sleeving worry with the EVO (and w/ the opinion of the dashes). I'm trying to get it and my classified 759 to play nicely. not happening...
truly amazing work, Driver. Love the alternating color sleeving on your PCI-Es!

But I need to work out how much white sleeving i wil need :)
and a litle bit of yellow :D
O and subscribed :D
Duuuuuudeee......Perfect heatshrink!
I can't wait till i have the money to buy a huge pack, then sleeve two PSU's. I bet i wont be saying how great it is while sleeving though :P

Wow, an entire table of wonderful goodies!
Thank you very much for the guide Dangals, I can't wait to start my sleeving project (sadly without Murdermod stuff, I fear I just wouldn't do it justice, but my next build will be).
Anyone have experience sleeving the pci express modular cables on the corsair hx850? Im looking to see if there is a guide to remove the giant circle on the modular cable for sleeving.. any help is greatly appreciated.

is an example

Very nice color match you have there TheDriver... I am planning on a small HTPC/Gaming build with a Asus Rampage II Gene x58 board and this color combo is what I had in mind...
http://www.abload.de/img/dscf6876jk1p.jpghttp://www.xbitlabs.com/images/mainb.../board_big.jpg
Yup, just a matter of cutting off the heat shrink, then when you remove the wires from your Molex, you pull the wire out of the filter (ferrite ring) as well.
That ring thats ferrite on the corsiar PCI-E just cracks off the wires... I squeezed it with my wire cutters very lightly and it broke into two pieces
I have such rings on my Antec Signature, overall it is very good psu, but stock sleeving and this rings are terrible. And I don't think it is filters :shakes:
I've not tryed to remove them yet.
Awesome thread!

Anyone got any ideas on how I should sleeve this connector that is attached to fans for my rv-02.. its a little mini fan controller.
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/278/img00006z.jpg
Certainly learned a lot from this thread.
Hopefully I can share something that worked for me.
Well first of all, those molex extractor tools didn't work for me, I have the Corsair HX520 and the pins are an ass to remove.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3426/...fb070072_b.jpg
They need to be made of Adamantium or something, someone get Wolverine.....
These worked best for me (credits to dingdong555 :) ), plus they are dirt cheap, less than 50 cents :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2503/...937af2af_b.jpg
I had an extra tool as well, something to help me pull out the "super hard to remove" pins, couple bucks down at ACE Hardware :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2640/...04caed60_b.jpg
They have no sharp teeth, so they don't "bite" into the PVC and tear it if you squeeze and pull too hard :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2669/...db63ed36_b.jpg
Ok a little demonstration of how I did it :
Get your tools ready :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2481/...d5e3af76_b.jpg
(sorry can't resist the shot )
Put on your gloves, it does help reduce injury when you yank the cable out, trust me, you WILL cut yourself (maybe I'm just clumsy)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2497/...c4a364b1_b.jpg
Push one pin in until it can't go no more :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2469/...3852bdbd_b.jpg
Push the other pin in and make sure it's aligned, so you know it went all the way in :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2674/...b3f67806_b.jpg
Then just simply use the tool and yank it out
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/...17ecc523_b.jpg
Done!
Thanks Dangals for starting the thread, Guys who contributed (too many to mention), Charles and Nils for the best sleeves ever!
I'm kinda addicted to sleeving, but I just have 4m left of the 1/8 lol
Christian: It's always great to see outstanding sleeving photos :)
Love the glove-shots :D
Here some orange from me (it kills every camera sensor - it's unphotoshopped):
http://www.abload.de/img/orange-mdpc-xsw9v.jpg
Thanks for the mini-guide, hcristain. And, excellent job on your sleeving!
Love the orange, Nils.
Man how does everyone get the heatshrink and sleeving cut the right length? I seem to be wasting heatshrink because it is too short and the sleeving because it is too short too. Any tips?
hchristian Love the shots man! haha, the glove.
Thanks :)
Mediocre sleeving at best, can't seem to get the sleeving at the right length for all the cables. I noticed the cable length varies for each color.
I can't see the orange thing :(
Don't flex the sleeving? cause it kind of "pull back" after you extend them.
I use about 2 cm of heatshrink for each cable, worked well for me.
lol, simply couldn't resist it
Thanks for the pin idea! Awesome piece of thing, plus it's harder and doesn't break :D
Here's a trick I use for getting my heatshrink lengths right - cause I just can't seem to cut them exactly the right length (tried to figure out how to use some type of paper cutter to do it, but can't quite see how to do it that way).
First, I cut a bunch of heat shrink pieces - 1.5-2.0 cm depending on how long I want it. Then I check their lengths by putting against something straight - e.g. the box in the pic. Then I trim as required to get them just about right. Of course, keeping the lengths right also requires care when you actually apply them.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...94_wM9Jx-M.jpg
Sometimes you still miss a bit - see the upper most wire in this set. If it's really bad, I will actually remove the heat shrink with an exacto and redo. Some guy around here has this "No Compromises" saying ...
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/6...69_LQNcB-M.jpg
Now that is a sleeve job! perfect length!Quote:

Did you trim the length of the wires? Mine seem to come with different lengths, hence the mess.
A little tip: instead of yanking the wire out of the connector with a pair of pliers, take a very small flathead screwdriver and gently push it out from the same side as you put your needles/staples in. This way you avoid pulling the wire out of the metal piece, like i did on one ocassion. :(
Wow, the look is wonderful!
I am wanting to buy a few meters to in my source and the tools to make the changes, but I wonder if the staff sends to Brazil if I order!
thanks
Has anyone attempted to sleeve their USB keyboard or mouse cords? Maybe even speakers wires?
Heck how about ALL the wires behind their desk?
:D
:) ... sorry ... nothing fancy. It was just a f/3.5 lens, but long thing. No idea what it was, but nothing special :)
Anyways, I told a good friend (Ferhan aka fhantastic) to finally register here at XS. Since this might take a while he allowed me to now show some beautiful sleeve-art that he did. Will be cool once he is registered here!!!

Anyone know how to remove the sata power connectors from a HX1000W PSU? I want to customize the length. That guide on Page 1 doesnt help
