ATI 4850/4870 voltmod thread

I just did the pencil mod up to 1.34v last night. I have a duorb and heatsinks on everything, but i'm getting hellish temps.

By the way, i'm using a duorb with zalman rhs1's applied to the vram with thermal tape, and as for all the stuff on the right. I have the bigger rhs1's applied using arctic silver adhesive. I applied the adhesive this morning, so it may be that it just hasn't set yet, but those temperatures at 1.34v are still ridiculous. They should be lower. My vram temps when up a lot too for some reason even though I didn't voltmod the ram. I'm stumped.

what would the approx. core voltage be if i used a 33ohm resistor? i saw one member used 3 10ohm resistors for 1.36 core volt.

i'm using a hr03-gt so i should be ok on temps. i just cant find any 50 or 100 ohm pots in stock at any ;ocal radio shacks.

@sandwichamwin - I've seen this picture on your blog. Nice idea! Have you tried it on 4870 as well? Any results if it would cool better this way+120mm fan, or in stock setup with whole cooler?

You can't bump the fan speed up on a duorb. That's just the percent that the stock cooler would be running at if I had it on.

Does anybody have any idea what GPU temp #3 is?

Don't worry, I am. I'm having serious issues with the temperatures on here though. I don't know why, it's really odd. Even at 1.32v the #2 will get on up there to 95c. I put on arctic silver adhesive this morning, and by now it's surely set. I'm considering reseating the duorb. Is there a specific way that you should put the as5 on, because there's always a chance that I didnt do it right.

A lot of people on other forums are having trouble with the Duoorb cooling the 4870 even at stock speeds. Under load they're getting temps well up to and beyond 90 degrees which is worse than stock.

I'd get some water on that thing, these suckers get hot, even more so after extra volts and overclocking. I'm sure a TRUE would do the job aswell :rofl:


@LuxZg i never tried it on the 4870. I doubt it would be better than the stock fan due to the way the heatsink is designed. If you look closely, the fins are 'closed' at the top so the air needs to be forced from the side to be effective.

I tried to do the pencil mod on my VMEM on the 4870 but one of the resistors simply will not pencil in...any tips on what I can do? The first one dropped from 220ohm to 143ohm after pencil mod, but the second no matter how much I pencil stays at 220ohm.

Also, I tried and confirmed that a BIOS vmod on the 4870 does not work. This also includes the XOC BE version of the 4870.

Currently running my 4870 XOC BE at 870/1200 on stock volts in Vista :D Noticed however that C2D combined with this card gives about 20% - 25% better performance over my 5000+ BE X2 @ 3.2GHz. Kind of an ouch :s

Ok I finally got around to measuring voltage with a multimeter, and I found that I idle at 1.05V (maybe 1.046, only 3 sig figs for my DMM) and load at 1.17.....WTF. I flashed the BIOS to 1.3V (I know 1.21V is the max, just wanted to be sure)
Any ideas why it's not going to 1.2V? Do some cards just not want to put out 1.2V without a hard mod? I Sapphire cards BTW.....flashed with the MSI BIOS, which I then edited to higher clocks.

Have you tried to lower idle voltage too? It seems 1.263v can't be changed :(

I'm not really sure....I think there may actually be 3 diodes in the GPU.......at least that's what an Everest developer suggested.

If you want you to get 1.2V, you have to write 1.2V in the BIOS.

When you write 1.3V, the bios will consider it as unknown/incorrect value and use the default value (1.05V).

I have Sapphire HD4850 card. Why is it needed to flash it with other Manufacturers cards bios? Like some here do? Isn't Sapphire's bios good for OC?
Maybe i don't need to flash it after all, how can i make sure that the powerplay is working like it should? I don't have any wattage reading hardware. :(

I finished modding the second 4870. Went straight to 900/1050 1.4v... no worries :yepp:

They maxed out at 940mhz 1.4v. Like before, more voltage doesn't seem to get me anywhere. I'll see what the newer 4870 can do alone, it might be one dud card holding back.

For the people that have done the vddc and the vddq on the 4870. What voltage are you shooting for? What voltage is too high? How much have you gained from the vmem mods?

I know this might seem like a strange question for this forum but what if I wanted to force either of these cards in reverse. Would an underclock/undervolting be easier to achieve via softmod than hardmod? Any ideas as to how it might be done using the latter?

actually you can lower clocks and possibly volts for 2d mode in AMD gpu tool.

I meant arctic alumina adhesive for the attachment of heat sinks, but I figured you'd know what I meant.

hahaha wait, you seriously didnt know you void your warranty with third party cooling, man that sucks, but its not all bad as long as you are careful with your card it wont die, they are pretty sturdy components

Yep, I could reach 900Mhz but only using 1.42V Full load temperatures still very cool but I think 1.4V is too much for daily use in this core. 3D06 run at 900Mhz air...

Anyone? I'm reading 1.51V for both MVDDC and MVDDQ so there should be some headroom since Qimonda specifies a max voltage of 2.0V. Just waiting for my tubing to arrive from Sidewinder so I can re-assemble my loop and put those jumpers on my vmods. :up:

Great guide sandwichamwin. I can't believe I never thought of putting the 3-pin connectors on top of the trimpots, much less clutter that way. I noticed a typo in your guide though, it's supposed to be a 50ohm trimpot for VGPU, not 5. Kinda important. ;)

I'm getting ready to vmod my 4870, and am slightly concerned with the comment at http://sandwichamwin.blogspot.com/ stating "Before continuing, double check that the resistance is still set at 50ohms and the jumper is set in the 'off' position (not connecting the trimpot to ground)! We wouldn't want to boot up and have a dead card would we?"

What is meant by this? I've vmodded 2 other cards, and not had any concern with booting with the mods enabled. Am I missing something here or misreading this? I see other folks with hard-wired mods (http://img59.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0975dp9.jpg), but am thrown off a bit by that comment. Can someone clarify?

To those that are (still) wondering about BIOS voltmods, I and several other people have confirmed before that BIOS voltmods DO NOT WORK :)

Now, in terms of the 4870 XOC BIOS, it is a waste of my time to post it at all. The stuff I mentioned before was before I stressed the card with ATITool and FurMark. The card is utter crap, and the BIOS is a joke. All it lets you do is use CCC OverDrive to clock the card to max 990 core and 1200 memory. The voltages used on this card and in the BIOS are all stock, 1.263V core, 1.501 memory. Luckily I bought mine for just $5 more than stock 4870. The card artifacts too right out of the box at 800/1100 in ATITool after about 30 minutes of running it. Any higher and you will be seeing artifacts in the first 5 minutes or even 10 seconds, lol. FurMark only runs at 800/1100. Any higher and you are in for a system crash (not a power problem as I have a CM EP 600w and only 1 4870 XOC). I have already returned one card, and the second does the same. Extra voltage seems to stabilize the core and remove the artifacts but then it seems the memory loses OC ability and stability in full-screen 3D apps goes into the pooper. Also, other people with the XOC have tested their cards with same results. Not only do they not give a benefit, but it is almost looking like they are bad OCers in general :s Anyway, on the state of these cards you can see more here...

Maybe you guys can help us build a bit more momentum spreading the word too possibly forcing Diamond to do something about this. As it stands now 4870 XOC is a piece of junk.

@dejanh - well, it would still be nice to have BIOS that unlocks Overdrive so we don't have to use 3rd party tools..

@whoever is interested - I won't be voltmoding my HD4870 (just came in today) since I don't want to solder on it. But what I can happily say is - that it runs on Chieftec 450W PSU (GPS-450AA-101A) even when overclocked (780/1090, i just gave auto-tune a try and left it at that untill weekend and Accelero mounting). So if there are people unsure about if these cards will work on their computers, I belive there's no fear, as long as you don't voltmod..
Taking that in consideration, I felt that buying 4870 was a better choice than going for 4850+new PSU, and then bothering with voltmods. Mildly OCed 4870 is still better than what I'd get with pencil-modding 4850, and it's less trouble overall.

But this is not to stop your OCing attempts, keep volting and clocking those cards by all means :D It's nice to see 1GHz cards, even if it's not in your computer :D

P.S. Oh, and that's all with my E4400 clocked to 3,2GHz as well..

Welll, if it makes you guys happy I will be posting the 4870 XOC BIOS for you not too long from now...

I think i might need to do some fixes. It was written at midnight after a long day at work.

I was just trying to emphasize how important it is to make sure you're booting up with maximum resistance so a newbie won't accidentally boot with maximum volts and fry their card. It's perfectly safe to boot with the mod on, i might edit that part out.

Here you go gentlemen. The (in)famous 4870 XOC BIOS. 128-kb, exported with GPU-Z 0.2.6. I've zipped it so that I can put it here :D

By the way, I have finally managed to make a fully stable setup with this card. I am running at 850/1150 artifact free and very solid. Max GPU temps are around 65C. The volts are 1.349 core and 1.598 memory.

Fixed fan profile, 10-15MHz better overclocks, unlocked Overdrive to 900MHz for core, mem is locked at 1100MHz.

But we'll be waiting Diamond XOC BIOS as well, since it has even bigger range (990/1200 you said?) Even if Diamond XOC BIOS is maybe flawed a bit (poor overclockers?) perhaps someone can combine those two and give us best of both worlds ;)

EDIT: LOL! You jumped in while I was typing :D And didn't notice it at all :D Was reading your thread at ncix and just got to mvktech BIOS page (where you've posted it just few minutes before posting it here :D)

Why do we need to flash to a new bios? I can hit 950mhz with stock bios and amd gpu clock tool.

More at your XOC card.. I've noticed that before running Furmark you could go to 870/1200. SInce a lot of people are warning NOT to use furmark, as it can kill your card, have you thought about perhaps Furmark being the guilty part of low-OC equasion on these cards?
I've noticed in ncix thread that other guy tried with his Crossfire setup, but he was following your advice to first OC to 850/1100, than "BURN IN" (or I'd say burn-out :D ) the cards with Furmark, and only than to try lower clocks... Maybe the cards would be working fine if it wasn't for Furmark "burns"? I have to say that I have never used Furmark longer than a minute, and that was on non-oced X1950, so I can't really say if this could be it or not. But way too many people sc**wed their cards with Furmark, so I'm just wondering...

You would think that, but no, the problem is not that at all. FurMark did not do anything to either of us. I can still run even as high as 890/1200, but it is only marginally stable. Sometimes quick, sometimes after prolonged periods of playtime artifacts start to appear. In ATITool however, they were there all the time, always. I am not happy with that. I do not need the card to run at 890,880,870/1200 or whatever and be "seemingly" stable. I jumped the gun before because I only tested it using 3DM06 and Vantage and stated I was stable at 870/1200. It was never the case unfortunately.

By the way, FurMark will not do anything to your card if the cooler is sufficient, but I keep a close eye on temps, volts, and everything when testing ;) Fan at 100% no temps, including MOSFETS went over 70C. It was worth putting the idea out there though, hehe :)

Oh, one other thing that may be important, and maybe one of you can chime in on this...I noticed that I can push the card higher than 850/1150 but it starts to artifact. Then, in order to remove artifacts I up the vcore. However, as I up the vcore past 1.39V, the number of artifacts starts to increase exponentially and the higher the voltages the more artifacts I get. Now, considering that temps at 1.42V and at 1.349V are not that different and that I already verified those are not an issue, this sounds like either the card is consuming too much power now that the PSU cannot give it, or the 2x6pin + PCIe slot cannot supply, or the core is maxed out. Any ideas why artifacts would increase if voltage is increased past a certain point if temps and hence overheating are not the problem? I am running a single 4870 XOC with a CM EP 600w SLI/Crossifire-Ready PSU.

Here is the diagnostic chart...

HD4870 LEDs
D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault
D1602 - Red LED On, shows External power connector A was removed
D1603 - Red LED On, shows External power connector B was removed
D601 - Red LED On, shows critical Core power fault

Yours would be the D1603, but I'd be betting your voltage regulators are getting too hot so the card is failing.

^ There's your answer then. You are overheating, most likely on voltage regulators. If not that, I would look at ram then, and lastly the GPU. Clearly though something is wrong with how you mounted your cooler and/or sinks.

I know your cooling is better on paper, but in reality if you did not mount it properly or are not cooling a component properly then you will get overheating with an aftermarket cooler. I told you my example of VF1000. It is better at keeping the core temps down, but it sucks at cooling the VRM so my card was causing problems and I was getting diagnostic lights turning on. This is on my 4870 XOC. You are definitely overheating somewhere, question is where...

You could do that, but remember - in that case there is no going back with warranty (except if you can get extra heatsink somewhere). But that is a pretty good solution for 4850's. You should also try pointing one fan at VRM's in the back..

You really might want to put your stock heatsink on and see what happens. If your card is still doing the same thing I'd suggest you go to BB and get it replaced before you screw it up to a point that you cannot return it.

Well, with a bit of tweaking now I managed to get my XOC to 855/1175 and it appears to be more or less stable. I tweaked the volts a bit to give the core 1.344V at load, and memory to 1.609V at load. However, the problem still remains where if I turn up the voltage past about 1.37V I get more and more artifacts in ATITool. The opposite of what should happen :confused: I do not even have to up the clocks, just the voltage, particularly on the core. Memory voltage seems to do the same thing but to a lesser extent. I did not really check the effect of memory voltage in detail.

My temps on my vram go to 90c, that is if the 3rd temp in gpu-z is vram. The second temp is going up to 103c on load. This, I believe, is the vrm's. This is all with the voltage at 1.32v.

Ok, well, I am sort of leaning now that despite the reported temps it is the cooling on the VRM modules that causes the cards to fail at higher volts. I was benching/stress testing with Crysis and I noticed that with the fan at 90%-100% I can get stable 875/1185 but only if I am running the fans so high. Drop the fans to say 50% and the test freezes. The volts needed for that clock are ending up to be 1.45V core and about 1.64V memory. Either way, I am pretty much convinced now that the 4870 XOC BE does not clock any higher than say 835/1150 on stock volts. Indeed, to be generally stable you need not go past 825/1125. Pretty lousy if you ask me for a card that states should be able to OC to 950/1200. :rofl:

Yeah, maybe you can do 950/1200 with LN2 and about 1.6V on the core and another 1.7 on the memory. With air-cooling the best one can hope for that is true rock-solid stability (no ATITool artifacts, any game continuous 24/7) is about 850/1150 with roughly 1.35V core and 1.6V memory. Of course, as you can tell volt mods are required. Damn lying Diamond. They may have as well put 2000MHz max core speed and 4000MHz max memory, it would be just as realistic as the current CCC OverDrive limits for the 4870 XOC BE.

I now officially give the (3rd) 4870 XOC BE I tried and the whole line a big fat :down:

This is a pretty bad setup you have. For starters, you really may want to try remounting all of your sinks. Second, if you can have them copper then go with copper. I found that (on the 4870) the aluminum sinks on VRM do a terrible job cooling the VRM modules. For memory they are a bit better, but only because with a VF1000 in my case I had the cooler fan blowing down on them. Third, lose all of those fans. If you want to have a fan blowing air across your VRM, you should place it at 90deg to your card, directed to blow air out the back of your case from the back of the card (so the air flows across the card and out the back of the case). Oh and, temps #2 and #3 in GPU-Z are VRM and memory respectively.

They're not vrm and memory by the way. I thought that too for a long time, but it turns out that temp 2 and 3 are just temperature sensors on different parts of the core. By the way, I undid that setup, so now that big fan is just on the case side, and the little fan is gone. It just puts a little more air in there now.

The reason that I know that those temps are the core, are first of all, I heard it from a guy who knows these things, and second, if you look around, you'll find people watercooling this card, and their gpu temp #2 and #3 is very low even though they just have some heatsinks on the vrm's and memory, just like I do, without any fans even.

I'm not even watercooling but has a VF1000 modded w/ 2 fans and all mine 3 temps are low... even before I put some sinks on VRM... @ 850Mhz and got 40/50/45ºC 1.33V

Yep, I'm watercooled and my temps are 31, 34 and 32 respectively.


And you don't need LN2 for 950mhz... Mine do that on only water.

950mhz is a right achievement... you got lucky there my friend....

You my friend have a 4850. I'm sure it can be cooled with a VF1000 adequately. 4870, I think not. I tried, believe me.

Well, I tried to share what I thought was a little bit of useful information. I am not convinced that temps 2/3 are not VRM and memory respectively, and I would differ with your friend. However, I also do not have an external temperature sensor to test this myself, so I cannot really prove it. Having said that, unless you have a defective core it is not possible that the core has 50C in one area and 75C in another. What you are saying quite frankly does not make sense, but w/e. Finally, you could simply have a faulty card or your cooler may just be completely inadequate.

dejanh he has a 4850 just look at his sig. , also people have been getting 850 on stock cooler. This cooler should perform better especially with 2 fans so I don't see how 850 can't be seemingly possible to you. Either you got a lemon overclocker or your cooler is messed up.

Ok, I am going to eat my own words here. Temps #2/#3 are not VRM, they are something else. I just cross-referenced them with Everest that reports VRM temps and this temp is completely different from the temps #1/#2/#3 reported in GPU-Z. It is kind of weird that they would be three core temps though, especially since they can be significantly different at times, at least for me. Now, I have a 4870, not a 4850 so you can disregard my advice if you want, but I really think that there is an issue with your cooler. If not then the card has some problems. I think though that the advice I have given you on fan positioning still stands. :)

I think there's most likely sensor's at different part's of the card. However, where I don't have a clue. Or it could be like the 45nm intel cpu issue with a bum temp sensor, to be on the safe side I'd reinstall your cooler, maybe add some better thermal paste.

I'd wait and see how the T Rad2 comes out and see if you can fit fans on that.

Accelero s1 rev2 's fanless or gfxchilla because it can fit in crossfire I believe, otherwise dunno what would fit.

Razr, I know that but but so far the gain from going crossfire or sli seems to be 50% or so and doesn't seem worth the cost to me specialy when you could overclock the gtx280 and get 17% more performance free.

Cuz 4870 xfire is faster. ;)

after rubbing off my pencil off my 4850 and running at 700mhz stock volts for awhile I redid the pencil mod for 1.05v idle 1.35v load....and am now stable for my 24/7 clock of 820/1150mhz :)
