**Official ABIT IX38 QuadGT Review/Overclock/Guide Thread**

Hi all!
I have finally gotten serious about OCing my q6600 with this board and I have found a couple of things:

I can reach 3.33ghz completely stable with vcore @1.3875 and 0.0 CPU offset. I have to have a target voltage of at least 1.4125 just to sniff 3.4ghz :( I'm currently running 9x370 cuz my memory is not of the OCing type and I want to keept it close to stock speed, therfore I haven't tooled around with CPU VTT past 1.4. Also I haven't found too much of a difference in the CPU GTLREF. In some cases different settings seem to help a little but I haven't tested it thouroughly. I was hoping to reach a stable 3.4ghz but I get a little more peace of mind with the voltage under 1.4.

How high can you safely raise the vcore and still get at least a couple of years out of your processor? Is it more dependent on heat than raw voltage? If this is the case I guess I don't have to worry, I have a zalman cnps 9700nt that is performing marvelously! When trying to calibrate speedfan for temp I found that I couldn't do it. The guide states that you can't have CPU temps below room ambient, but the 9700nt, according to uguru and speedfan, had the temp at 12c with an ambient temp of 17c! I have been wondering if my temps have been correct because under load in prime I can't get it over 44c. also, my pwm temps hover around 60c max, and my cores are all running below 65c. Are my low temps just the result of keeping my home in the mid to low 60's? (it's cold here in Michigan so to me 60+ Fahrenheit feels warm!)

Uguru CPU Temp is crap. do yourself a favour & get CoreTemp

Yes, uguru IS poop when it comes to reading CPU temp. Coretemp confirms speed fans temps. Also, after some careful calibration it turns out my *real* idle and load temps are 25c and 46c respectively. Why do I need almost half a dozen programs to monitor my various systems accurately?! I'm pretty sure it's a conspiracy but I'm having a hard time coming up with a motive.... I'd better contact george bush so he can get homeland security working on this. While they probably wouldn't find an answer it would be the first time my tax dollars went towards something that might actually help me. Computer frustration... when will I stop being a noob?!

i think the bios engineers purposely set the timings to be loose on the first several releases...they don't want users to stumble coming out of the starting gate..you know, no post screen or can't clock very high.

i see the 7/8 PL on the DFI board when it is set to auto in the bios...on the Pro board i would see 7/8 PL...i miss my freaking Pro board...i am NOT a happy camper with this DFI board...it works but it drives me crazy with the multiple triple re-posts to get the settings to work...i can make a minor change, nothing to do with memory or mhz and it will shut down and re-start...when it does that, i am in it for the long haul to get it to show a post screen again!

i think that i know what my problem was, but i need further verification from other DFI X38 posters, ...i think that i had a DEFECTIVE 9650...outward sign was core #0 was stuck (frozen) on 51C...if you ran it at stock speed and then ran wPrime 1024M bench the temp on core #0 would not budge...same way for idle conditions at stock speed, locked on to 51C.

i called Intel tech support to see if i could get an RMA and the guy wouldn't do it...he said DON'T worry about the temps...MAN, that torqued me off to hear him say that...he said if the processor gets to hot, it will signal the board to shutdown..so...no worry if you melt the silicon:D;)

i am going to type a letter to Intel headquarters to complain about the lack of support and not fulfilling their warranty.

any way, i was a day within my 30 day return policy for the place that i bought it at...the place is taking it back and they will send me a new one...i hope it isn't the same pack date...LOL:p:

the only problem with this return was that i recycled the box and plastic..hehehe...so...they might charge me a 15% re-stocking fee...i hope they will feel pity on me;) and not charge me that fee....i will be eye balling my CC bill.

I just I've ordered a couple of these boards. I really wanted to get one ix38, and one DFI x38-t2r (so I can get to compare the two), but it wasn't in stock and I couldn't wait, and no 780i boards around for me to order either.. But that's alright, it'll be a while before I get a Nvidia chipset again after the whole Yorkfield with the 680i, and I have a feeling my old 680i board got flakey with quad cores at high voltages.

Anyhow, along with the boards, I ordered a few Ultra Mini Kaze 40mm fans to go over the NB and mosfets, along with Arctic MX-2 Thermal Paste.

My question, has anyone replaced whatever was inbetween the PWM and the heatsink with MX-2 or Ceramique? Was there a difference in temps?

Also, Can the Thermalright HR-05 SLI/IFX fit over the NB, and another on the SB? I noticed the NB seems to have a unique Hole placement, compared to other boards.

Looking forward to getting this board going, getting a new q6600 in too. You know, it was just my luck to get a L737B that had a vid of 1.325 :( Hopefully, the next one will be a bit better.

Hope you've tracked it down then. my 1st E6600 i got last Jan was faulty, took a while to track down, rma on commando 1st , got new one still same instability, even at stock. So took e6600 for rma, got new one sweet as a nut. Talking to the tech support guy in the store & was only the 2nd person to get a faulty one. Their the equiivalent of newegg here in the uk. Scan

I wouldn't recommend using anything other than thermal pads on these mosfets, because they are really really easy to kill :rolleyes:
Might not even be your fault, there only needs to be a minimal difference in height between these 5 chips and you either kill one of them if it stands off, or one goes up in smoke when it's lower than the others.
I wouldn't do it ;)

I don't think it fits.. those nb holes are really quite strange, w/o some modding you won't be able to fit any other cooler onto it atm - neither water nor air.

Ah, don't curse it just yet, I have a 737A with 1,225V and really having temp issues because it gets so f****** hot :shakes:
It does run 3,6G@1,32V but I'm already at 65C core which is about the limit for stability. I tried one Q6600 with 1,325V Vid, and even though it needed 1,4V for 3,6G it only hit 55C or so - same cooling :rolleyes:
I think I need to lap my CPU or something.. or go phase change :D

Need some advice please. I have narrowed down my buying decision for new system to this board or a Asus P5E. I have also decided to watercool my system. Any thoughts? Is the Abit board the way to go?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks:confused:

i think that i purchased from scan many years back...an asus AMD board that was only being distributed in the UK and europe....5 of us went in together to buy the board...i had a dickens of a time to complete the deal...i was talking via email with a sales person but i think he thought the deal was to complicated since it was an international order...i finally emailed the webmaster and he stepped in to help...got the deal done and i was very HAPPY!:)...so was four other guys around the USA...the boards came to me and i shipped them out to the other guys.

as you can see, i am TENACIOUS!...LOL:D :up:

i tried the B08 bios and i cant boot my Q6700, it works great with my E6600 though... have to flash back to B06 to run Q6700

man, that's no good...BUT...i had similar experience with the IX38 and my QX9650...multi's wouldn't go above default multi with 12.B03...i had to retreat to 12.B02 to allow me to increase the multi above 9X

Seems like divider 1:25 doesn´t work to good in b08 either. Atleast not for me :/

That's wierd with the Q6700 & 12.08. Have you tried pulling the battery, letting dmi rebuild, to see if that makes any difference??

I'm looking at the CPU VID in coretemp (q6600) and it shows 1.1625V. However, when it first opens it jumps back and forth from 1.325V to 1.1625V very fast for a couple seconds and than stabilizes at 1.1625V. which reading do you think it is? I didn't trust the reading with my overclock so I dialed it down to stock multiplier and FSB and it says the same thing.

Lower VID is better, generally speaking, right? 1.1625 VID sounds awfully low... is it a bull$hit reading? I also read that q6600's OC better with 8x multi rather than 9x multi, maybe that's why I can't get true stability @3.4ghz. I was just curious because I was thinking of RMAing the chip because it's cores show 11c difference at idle and it bothers me... it's either RMA it or do some lapping... or maybe it doesn't matter...

I'm running 12.B06 with a q6600 @375x8 (supposedly 1.1625 VID), just tried to run prime with everything set at stock voltage except a little extra vcore... yeah, it locked immediatly.

Maybe I need to try some other BIOS? I can run at 3.33ghz with x9 multi but my vcore seems a little high at almost 1.4V

I'm trying to work up the clock slowly but I'm having no luck with x8. when you get the FSB near 400 what kind of VTT and MCH voltages should I be looking for?

Don't think so pps just like the higher fsb for better memory clocks.

Try
9x400 12HR Prime Stable as a base. Others have needed ICH 1.05V VOLTAGE to be 1.2V or above for stability. My vid is 1.2625v so you may need a little less vcore.

Holy crap guys... I think my board's dying on me :(
I already told you about the strange sounds it's giving off even when in idle, but now it seems like the phase chips are definitely going to die or explode or whatever - just look at this:

Phases 1, 2 and 5 are getting way too hot after only a few seconds of prime, and that current of 162A is just ridiculous :eek:
Used to be like 94A@1,32V for 3,6Ghz. So if µguru is right, these PWMs are near death... Also Vcore is very unstable, I now have idle Vcore ranging from 1,35 to 1,39V and a Vdroop of 0,08-0,1V :shakes:
Note that I didn't change anything at all with my hardware or cooling, still the same mips PWM freezer sitting tight on the mosfets.
I also never gave this board anything over 1,4V Vcore so I just don't see why it should crap out just like that :(
Will be my 1st Abit ever to go to RMA, hope they give me a decent one next time :mad:

You just totally missed my point, maybe because you're new to this thread :)
I was running nearly 2 weeks with my Q6600@3,6Ghz and PWMs under water, gave me about 70C equal on full load.
A few days ago, I first encountered strange hissing and buzzing noises coming from the mobo - they weren't there before, it used to be dead silent.
Note that I never changed anything, neither hardware nor setting-wise.
Normally µguru showed 94A @3,6Ghz full load which is perfectly normal for a quad at that speed.
So now there must be something very wrong indeed...

Hang on, maybe it's related to the 12B.08? I think I'm gonna go back to B06 you never know...

i say 12.B02 is beter :) , running E6850 here 1.5vcore nog 4ghz full load power phase go to 45°C and 50A :) .
plz check if u have good contact with ure wc blok , never heard off a digital power phase dieing that fast .
mail to abit if something happens , abit will help u fast and good ;)

Just went back to B06, still the same.
But please don't start comparing currents with your G0 dualie - I can reach 140A easily@3,2Ghz with my old B3 Xeon :D

It all fits - the noises appearing out of thin air, the way too high current and the enormous vdroop without me changing anything - bad contact doesn't explain that, especially since my PC hasn't even been moved lately. That's rough jcool, i remember you mentioning the noise at the time.

It might be woth checking the indents on your heatpipes to see if the chips are level see

Pad of course... I don't wanna crush these chips ;)
I checked that they were level when I first mounted the waterblock.
Oh well, nothing more I can do here except wait for the replacement to come in. :(

I think it's got to be some defect either in the PWM implementation or just a problem with a few boards that didn't get past QC. I don't think it's related to the amount of Vcore you push. While I pushed mine up to almost 1.6, jcool only went to 1.4. If these PWM's are falling apart at 1.4, there's something in the design that the Abit engineers should be looking at.:shrug:

Yikes. That's not 24/7 is it? I was thinking of going 1.58 24/7, but I may slow things down so I can back off of that when my replacement comes in.

I killed off my old E6600 with 1,72V so be careful with these volts, unless you have a very good phase unit :D
Replacement for my mobo is on the way, should be 2 days max until it arrives. Hopefully this one will last that long :rolleyes:

i also have 3 graphics cards and 4 mobos hanging above my bed, first time i see someone else doing this :toast:

my own board should arrive tomorrow with 2 40mm fans for the pwm sincs.

just one question: did yours come with those metal clips to attach a fan to the PWM sink??

otherwise i need to get some new hotglue as i ran out of it :confused:

I think his CPU was a seperate thing. His IX38 had the same issue as mine where the PWM's started screaming with harmonic distortion alot like some vid cards used to.

Clips apear in the manual but not in the box:lol:
That's one of the complaints about the stingy package, no usb bracket either.

Naw, that was on my old AB9 QuadGT - which is still alive and kickin' by the way (due to the 1066 strap it kicks the :banana::banana::banana::banana: out of the X38 performance-wise...)
If only I could run my mem and CPU higher on that... actually thinking about modding my old board now :(
Like I said, I never fed the IX38 more than 1,4V actual Vcore.

From what i am reading here i see that compared to IP35 Pro this board needs more mch to be stable at same speeds. Is that correct? Is that a board issue or a X38 chipset issue in general?
With vcore offset in bios can someone asks 1.4V for booting and also at load/idle within windows without vcore flactuation?

Also is it possible to install a standalone pciexpress card on the 3rd pciexpress slot which is also 16x as the first without an issue (no boot,blank screen,less performance/bandwidth)?

My replacement board is already here, plus Mr. Franke kindly sent the first NB block my way just minutes ago, so I'll be posting my own pics by tomorrow or Saturday.
For those who are interested in one or more waterblocks, he said he's made a small series of them by now and anyone who's interested can write him an e-mail at info@mips-computer.de (in German or English). The waterblocks are made of copper/brass and have 1/4" threads.

is it just me or are you guys noticed that the vcore is higher in Guru then in the bios with the latest beta bios 12.B08

I mean with 12.B02 it was higher but now i'm got like 1.475 selected and it will show 1.50 or 1.51. where as i'd have 1.49 showing. btw what do you guys consider safe for 24/7 use? anything under 1.6?

seems 12.B08 is better for crossfire 3870's I picked up like 10fps on average it seems.

ignore uguru temp...use the latest version of coretemp, 096, to measure your core temps.

I decided to stick with a passive cooling solution for the SB, using a Zalman NB47J that already proved its effectiveness on my old AB9 QuadGT :)

So far the new board looks good, not the faintest sound coming from the PWM area - i certainly hope it stays that way.
Haven't flashed the bios yet, still running 11.B02 which was on the new mobo. I must say that this bios is way faster than any beta 12, has way more bandwidth and gives about 300 cpupoints more in 3dMark06 with the same CPU clock. However EIST isn't working correctly and Tras is way off, like everyone here knows.
Whatever, I think I'm gonna wait till they restore performance of bios 11 AND fix all the bugs with a new beta or final bios.

i just received the board and my ram, installed vista x64 (can't find my xp64 cd....) and have no sounds or anything else coming from it.

chipset cooling seems to be very good, but i also attached a 40mm to the northbridge HS. i can't say anything about OCing so far as i'll wait for my replacement pair of 3870's until i start with real ocing and get hold of a replacement xp cd.

bios is well organised and the board is rock stable so far (just like any other board from 30-400$ with this cpu :ROTF:

i'll post some pics and results when my 3870s return from RMA (they died together with my old amd system)

Think that makes sense myself sb doesn't get that warm. Think SB gets warmer using the original heatpipes. I have a temp probe on the nb & SB side of the heatpipes & have never known such a warm sb. I think basically the heay has just come from the nb.

Though i've not benched 11 12.06 did give alift from 12.02 which 12.08 has sustained. I don't think official 12 will be that far away. maybe next week??


Hi generics_use, you'll find the need dfor a fan on your pwm once you start ocing:) There's an MS driver than needs installing with the sound, sometinmes it goes missing on install Look forward to seeing the pics:up:

i just flash using 12b09 and doesnt give me c1 error so the bios should be ok :D

my d9 can run using 1:1.25 :D

so whats limiting the max fsb on 1:1.25/4:5 i use the same voltage as the 1:1.5/2:3

vtt or vmch?since vmch i already set to 1.85v which i think its quite high for air cooling :D

Seems with this latest BIOS, this motherboard is starting to show it's real fang now. The 1:1.25 divider and wrong temperature limit offset have been fixed. Can't wait for the version 12 final BIOS! :up:

One more thing to check is does this new BIOS also fix the "Load Profile" function in BIOS? I had tried this feature in 12.B06 BIOS, and it was not working properly...

Aside from RAM dividers, have you guys been able to get higher CPU FSB overclocks with the 12b09?

I'll try it out later on today. Just waiting for my prime95 24hr test to finish up. I'll be very happy to bring my current q6600 to 3.6ghz. Right now, it's at 3.465ghz.

Anyhow, I've also noticed, if I push my MCH to 1.4v, the computer crashes as soon as a load is put on to it. I assume this because of the passive cooling, and I got my 40mm fans in today, so I'll see if that makes a difference.

Otherwise, the board has been good. I've been able to push my g.skill ram 800mhz (4x2gb, 8gigs total) to around 940mhz easily at only 1.95v, and no issues.

Tried 1:1.25 M704b_12.b09 Initial Feedback able to bench like R*r at 8x470, but C1 on reboot. more info at bottom off link.
Got same at 8x450. May need to do a bit of tweaking.:shrug:

ive just recieved the Abit IX38..

i have flashed the latest bios beta09.. i am running a q6600@3825(425x9@1.39v load) with a TT 120 Ultra Xtreme... thing is i have just switched form an Asus P5E and with the same CPU and cooler i had at this same frequency and voltage. Anyway the temps are much higher now ... i was getting like 35-36C IDLE and now i have like 45-47C.. also load temps are higher 78C vs 85C.

i have all teh cpu options set to disable in the bios .. just like on Asus..

also the pwm are hitting 120+ on quad priming...although i have a fan on the pwm rad.

any advice?

Erm... your CPU is actually stable at 78C coretemp?!
Mine flukes out at about ~68C... as does about any other G0 Quad. Is that a B3 you got there? Would explain PWM temps and why your CPU can handle that temp. What current readings are you getting with µguru?

I had my G0 Q6600 completely stable at 85c as well. I was really surprised to see it going at that temp... Of course I've clocked it down after. With the Ultra Exteme too.

With the new bios, i've been able to push my FSB to 3.5ghz stable by 8x438mhz.

@jcool ... its a G0 ofcourse ... anyway i had it running for over 1 hour @quad prime on the P5E .. @ 78C... on IX38 it heats up to about 85 and sometimes between 8-13 test in quad it reboots :(

In the uGuru it reads 1.38-1.39 V in load and i even got a record high 125C on one of the PWM's anyway 4 of them are over 110C .. i think i will change the rad on the pwm or stick with the Asus :( .. also 60-65C @ CPU on uGuru readings =)

other than that this morining i opened up the window .. its winter here.. and let it run at the same speeds on the abit and voila .. it ran fine for over an hour .. temps being 68@cpu and under 100 on pwm's

still i dont know why i get higher idle and load temps on the IX38 than on the P5E.

Talked to Johnny Bravo last night & he confirmed that the multiplier was ok in 02 for Qx9650 but is broken in all subsequent bios.I'm running q6600 go so can't say

I've tried everything I know, going to 1 stick of RAM, triple checked the power connections, removed the RAID card, no change. Is this mobo DOA?

Update: Tried a brand new PSU and got the same problem.

well isn't that funny. final 12 says it fixes double boot. after flashing to final it double boots :down:

never had the problem till i flashed to a bios thats supposed to fix the issue for some.. also when i change the multi it will go through a weird double boot up. It boots changes the multi, then shuts off then boots with the factory fsb with the new multi. this didn't happen with the first Bo9 bios. they probably didn't change a thing.:D

fixed the problem! went back to beta 8 lmao

Naw... if there is no Fan on the CPU fan header it just shuts down for good (doesn't reboot). I know that problem 'cause the fan i attached to it starts below 300 rpm - had to disable that limit :D

these few days ive got problem with the 90 bios code...

after i install wb on my vga it give me 90 and then i change with other vga but still the same 90 also but it boot by it self n give me c1....

then i change the memory all kind of config...still c1

then i take out the proc..put back n whala its on again...

but after a random restart some time it give me 90 again...i think the bios stuck or what?my easiest solution is take the psu supply at mobo,clear cmos n it can back to normal....
