gettin! after 5 hours of messing about with settings i decided to flash to the latest bios version 1504, despite what people have said about the past few recent updates. And i managed to get 3.4ghz straight away using linflas settings! For some reason though it shows up as 3.83 under my computer? but in cpu z its only 3.4ghz. Which is still much better than i had before! :D

BTW, does anyone think that 1.6vcore could be too high? will it give off more heat etc ?
*update* i have just tried out the 3.6 linflas settings and i managed to get into windows fine, but it just froze up. Im going to get some sleep now though as its 4:30am. Im not sure if i can make a 3.6 stable on air and stock heat sink on the motherboard? What do people think?

TIM is "thermal interface material". The stock stuff isnt all that good. The TIM is designed to aid in heat transfer to the heat sync. Yes heat issues can also cause issues in the bios. You really need to remove the stock heat pipes and replace that tim though. I know it's A LOT of work.... it is needed. If the NB and Voltage regulators don't feel hot to the touch like the SB then you probably are not getting good heat transfer. I used This in the NB and this in the SB before i changed to water. I believe i used these on the VR's.

Hi nuzgo, some great advice there! I didnt expect them to be that cheap to be honest. Water cooling would cost a lot more, would i see a huge benefit? I hear that some strikers and q6600's have limitations as to how far you can push them, and that some people cant get past 3.6ghz etc.
The northbridge and southbridge heatsinks look fine, but the mosfet SLF-1 's look a keyring, will they definitely be okay?

@ryanwhite123 you got it to run stable at 3.4 Ghz with 1504 bios? How long did you run Prime?
Wish I could try 1504, but I got CPU INIT when I reflashed to 1301. So going to have RMA it.
Does any know if Asus will allow me to RMA the board with out the heat pipes? I sort of hacked it up prior to water cooling (should of thought twice about it) :slapass:

Personally i hate nvidia chipsets in general, there all crap.
But if i had to chose, its evga. Why? because ASUS RMA blows compared to EVGA and you'll need it if your running nvidia.
And yes i own both intel and nvidia, this is why im saying its crap. :\
Hi pellepel, before i flashed to 1504 i couldnt get past the windows screen with anything other than 3.0, whereas now i can boot into windows at 3.4 and 3.6 with ease. I have been using other peoples settings from this forum as im not a great overclocker. Sadly though, my pc freezes up after 15 mins priming. The screen goes all wierd as if the graphics card is getting pulled out. I think this might be down to my stock heat pipes though, my N/S bridges are probably overheating. I think that im going to buy the coolers that nugzo recommended. Have a look at my settings and tell me what you think:

Just to get into windows with an overclock higher than 3.0 is a huge leap forward for me.
As for RMA'ing your board though, the heatsink looks as though its designed to be removed by the end user, otherwise they wouldnt have made it so simple to take off so you should be fine. Thats my opinion anyway.

Sorry to burst ya bubble Naekuh but reference Nvidia boards are far more unreliable then the Asus one... I have got 450FSB x 8 too on the Striker, yet the multi remains locked at 9X with my Qx and 4ghz on the York was too much for the board (didn't even enter windows) , I needed more CPU VTT... yet with wolfdales these 680i boards kick ass...
these coolers will enhance the stability big time Ryan... I modded mine with the thermalright kit, sadly with the mosfet coolers no big CPU cooelr can be used, this kit is great for watercooling but not for big air coolers... though my wolfie is happy under the Q6600 boxed cooler at 3.6ghz

Those coolers are huge. Currently im using a tuniq tower 120 to cool my q6600 as its supposed to be one of the best air coolers around.
The north bridge cooler looks excellent but i wouldnt be able to fit the southbridge due to my second 8800gt. Do the mosfet heatsinks get really warm? Do you think i could get away with smaller ones?
Im going to have to look into water cooling though, check out some of the prices and see what i can fit in my antec nine hundred case.

Mosfet cooling is a bitover the top yes. I used to have Swiftech copper heatsinks on them, way smaller but a bit fiddly to fit... but they did the job adequately....
470 is great mate, no comment there but going through a few reference boards, I only got the Striker up and running... to me it's way more reliable and better build...and it ran my quad daily at 425FSB at 8 multi (damn B3) sadly we never got a revision for better quad support like the reference boards....
Hi all. I have spent months trying to OC my processor. Despite having good cooling all i ever ended up getting was BSOD, even when i used default settings so i have now sent it back and bought an intel x48 asus rampage extreme dd2 mb instead. Its much much much better! I overclocked my q6600 to 3.5ghz within minutes!!
What's the final verdict on the DDR2 version of this mobo? The striker extreme is the ddr3 version right? I need to put to use a Q6600 and 2 8800GT's and 2x(2gbx1) corsair dominators. I was seriously considering the EVGA 780i FTW. Seeing as this thread was started awhile ago, and new tech has hit the market, I was wondering where the striker board stood. How is it with the E8500?
Striker works with E84/8500, but I would prefer you bought the 780I version as it's far more reliable and predictable then the 680i will ever be...

Best to try 425FSB mate with 8 multi (ram in Sync 850mhz 2T), the mobo needs better cooling on the NB to get the quad stable...3.2-3.4 is doable, but 3.6Ghz migh also be CPU limited and not just limited by the mobo.
