Yes the MST-81's are great; solid, heavy and fit perfectly on this board, I have two installed around the CPU area.
Interesting about the fan, that's true you can use the Q-Fan feature on the board to control the speed. So does only OPT_FAN 1 to 3 fan headers let you control the fan duty speed? And is duty speed the same as percentage of total RPM for the fan? What does CHA_FAN 1 to 3 give you? Silent, Standard and Turbo settings?

I'm going with two small 80x15mm Sanyo Denki's on each of my HR-05 heatsinks. I like your idea of the S1L with a fan on it, I just can't be bothered filing away to make it fit, plus I already have an HR-05 IFX/SLI in my parts box anyway. Both fans on the HR-05's are being plugged into OPT_FAN 1 & 2. The case fans are being plugged into CHA_FAN 1 & 2.
I should have all the parts in a few days, but when I get it all installed I'll post some pictures here. I'm going to need some nylon washers for the HR-05, I read a review where the reviewer said even tighening down the thumb screw the heatsink still swivelled, adding a couple of washers under the M3 thumb screw should fix that problem.
That's the other thing, Thermalright in the instructions recommends thermal compound on the chip and the heatsink base plate! I don't think so, I think I'll put compound on the heatsink baseplate only, because its smaller than the surface of my Northbridge chip.
I picked this board up yesterday from the egg on a sale for $359 shipped. Looking forward to setting up with e86 and Gskill DDR-1600 HZ kit.

From what I read on Newegg customer comments, it's largely good except for the failing fan. Although I have to wonder, how much better is that, than my current setup, the HR-05 SLI/IFX with 80x15mm Sanyo Denki fan, see below. I like the all copper look, matches the other copper heatsinks on the board, but I question how much more performance this ThermalTake heatsink would provide over my setup.

Note, this is my Southbridge HR-05 SLI/IFX, and also the fan isn't on the back permanently, it will be located on the other side. My Northbridge HR-05 IFX will use the same type of fan.
Hi Aln688 - the Thermal Take sink looks like a neat N/B solution. I would stick with what you have for the N/B and CPU as I'm sure they will be good performers.
Probably worth running this passively on the S/B without a fan - I bet the temp won't rise above 40 degrees :D

What would you guys recommend as the best bios to get started with? I'll be getting familiar on air then going to LN2 in a week. I have seen successful screens using the 501, is that the best so far?

anybody else have trouble using higher dividers when booting in at 600fsb, can only use the lower memory dividers giving between 1200mhz-1500mhz on the ram no matter what voltages set, i've had the ram running at 1900+mhz on the maximus i had but at a lower fsb

cheers mate thanks for answering i found out what it was after looking at cstkl1 screen shots (thanks for posting them) i noticed he had a much higher trfc, it was the trfc on auto was too tight at a higher ram speed (48) once i manually set it higher in the bios (88) i could boot 1800 mhz + no problem At 600fsb

but usually nowadays i just do test 5 loops for memtes86
very easy to tell a few issues spotted
if it fails before it completes 99% - nb voltage insufficient
if it shows errors after 99% percent - vdimm voltage insufficient
for 4gb if it hangs during the first 2gb range test - tRFC too tight
assuming ure gtl's /fsb termination vallues for cpu/nb /dram are all confirmed.
post ure specs..if not nobody here can give suggestions unless we have a professor x here.

just curious is this board more stable than say EVGA 790i digital PWM? I just bought one from another forum member. My 790i was just buggy and unstable even at stock configurations my last asus maximus extreme was awesome and stable at OC so I decided to go back to asus, but something a little better.
Funny you mention that, I'm struggling to find a good combination of fans for my system. I'm referring to case fan, CPU fan and NB heatsink fan. I've came to the decision (as you already suggested) to run my SB fanless, I'm beginning to detest the amount of fans on my system, it's getting out of hand.
I tested my Sanyo Denki 120x120x25 70CFM/30dBA fans last night (for the front & rear of case), slightly too loud, I'm referring to the air noise. Then I tested my Scythe SFF21G 75CFM/35dBA, would you believe these are *quieter* than the Sanyo's rated at 30dBA?!
Now I'm struggling to get a good fan for the CPU. I received my Noctua U9B and Thermalright HR-05 IFX today, great parts. I need a 92x92x25mm fan *better* (translated: better airflow) than the Noctua supplied fan, it's 37 CFM/17dBA. I see Scythe does a 92mm fan, but it's sleeve, and I'm spoiled by that 120,000 hours MTBF of the SFF21Gs.
Then I've got the dilemma of NB heatsink fan, what do I use there? I have the Sanyo Denki 80x15mm, I plugged it in, I could hardly feel any air come off that fan, I mean it's quiet but airflow seems non existant, it's 21 CFM/20dBA.
I'm considering a Delta 92mm for the CPU, something around 50 CFM instead of the Noctua NF-B9 fan's 37 CFM, this is to make up for the fact my CPU heatsink is smaller. I'll post a picture over the next day or so of the board with the CPU heatsink sitting on the board with the HR-05 IFX.
FYI, that HR-05 IFX/SLI fits perfectly on the SB, especially since my Diamond 4870 X2 video card runs down about half way through the SB chip path.
Question to anyone, I have Kingston HyperX DDR3 1625 PC13000 RAM 4GB, 2 modules of 2GB each. Is it possible for me to have 8GB, 4 modules of 2GB each? Same type of Kingston modules.
I remember my old Intel DX48BT2 board had a huge yellow flier stating that in the case of 1600 MHz RAM that only a configuration of 4GB can be used. Since I've not saw anything like that mentioned in the Asus documentation, I wondered if it's possible.
