Testing / comparing : Intel D975XBX2 / Asus P5B DX ***56K WARNING***

People, help me (i'm total dummy in overclocking) :confused:
Dummy or not but I can't overclock anything even though I built a few computers in my life. As you see in my sig I have D975XBX2 with E6600 and good memory. BIOS is 2507.
Everything works smoothly but if I try upping mem freq to let's say 289 from 266 I can't even boot (have to use jumper). Nothing helps. What Am I doing wrong?

Maybe somebody will have 5 min to patiently explain to me exactly what settings I have to use to get let's say 3Ghz from my E6600. I dont's need anything extreme.

you need to disable watchdog in clear cmos bios

you could also use 2333 bios (better imo)

Supertim0r, can you run 400+ FSB at 1066 strap (266 ref freq.) and memory at 4:5 divider (in bios it is 6xxMHz under mem settings)?

my problem is that only 1:1 divider works.

If xp and xp setup CD black screen after post, try to set the sata mode to raid. Even you are not using sata hd.

I'm a Noob at overclocking too. I was suffering from the same problem as you. I solved it by setting my processor and memory to automatic first (so no overclocking at all).Then I set my memory to manual and underclocked my memory to Mem Ref 266 and Mem Freq 533, plus desired voltage (2.08 volts) and I used 4-4-4-12 (I have 800 mhz memory). Restart the system. See if it runs and keeps the desired memory setting. Then restart and go into the bios and raise the fsb
In that order the mem settings were saved and I was able to overclcok my system.
As far as I know I didn't change settings to watchdog. But I'm not sure.

If you leave your mem setting to automatic (800 Mhz) and then start raising the fsb, you overclock your mem to much and the Mobo refuses to save the settings or refuses to start up. I got the 3 beep code (that means no memory found). If you underclcok your memory first you'll end up with memory runnig at about 710mhz. In my case I overclocked the CPU to 3,2 Mhz

Yeah I was having issues with 2507 and now I am back on 3.7 with np.

Disable EIST, and VT, save, move your jumper, disable C1E and watchdog. Put the jumper back in the default position and enjoy.

My board was constantly resetting my memory when I would change my FSB with lower BIOS revs (2395 and up), and with 2507 I couldn't change it at all unless the CPU section was set to "no" overclocking or default. It would force DDR 800 5-5-5-15. Making the above changes fixed all that, and I haven't had my memory reset once when manipulating the FSB.

Actually, you only need to disable EIST, C1E and watchdog. No need to disable VT but feel to do so if you choose. Also, once you've disabled these, completely power down and power back up and all is good. :D

EIST ?? is that right above watchdog and the other one ?


also would the HR05 or wutever that nb chipset cooler from thermalright fit on the badaxe 2 with a tuniq tower installed ????

also what would u use on the southbridge ??

and is there anyway to cool the ram .. my corsair ram cooler wont fit because the graphics card is sitting so close

EIST (Enhanced Intel Speed Step) is on the Power menu.

I wouldn't bother with the southbridge. I WC so my case fans are just barely spinning and the SB is hot but not uncomfortable.

The folks at Lavalys made a change and Everest no longer resets the core voltage. Get version 879 or greater. The link below is for 882 which also has a fix to right justify the Vista side bar.

If anyone could pm me or gladly put it in this thread, things to do firstly before installing the board. Just picked mine up and what things do i need to do, any cooling need to be added? So far i have got move the jumped to maintanence mode then disable watchdog, what else should i do?

I'm running 3Ghz at stock voltage right now and default memory settings. Just bumped up FSB to 333 and viola...

Well be aware that the 3 ports on the bottom left hand side of the above picture are USB2 and 1394. However there is no way to delineate between the 1394 and USB2 because they are both freakin blue (GG Intel you retards) so the 2 directly next to eachother next to front panel hookups are USB2, the one at the bottom edge of the board by itself is 1394.

I recently have killed 4 ipod nano 8gb because my top usb input was hooked up to a freakin poorly marked 1394. Just a warning to anyone else that may have made the same mistake. Intel could have at least made it red or some other color like the other 90% of mobos.

Having a problem with high end memory on this board. I have 4 setts of different memory.Ocz flex xlc 1150mhz 5.5.5.15,- Ocz Pc2 8000 titanium alpha VX2 1000mhz 4.4.4.15,- Ocz pc2 6400 patinum edition, -Corsair 8500c5 1066mhz 5.5.5.15. I have been using the settings that tony from ocz recomended earlier in this thread. Fsb 333, 533,200 strap multi at 12. My x6800 is stable at 4 gig no problem. All was good for first few days. I was using the flex xlc sticks. But all of a sudden i was getting system reboots, running memtest showed me that memory was having errors. I then underclocked the system to defaults and still they had errors. Took them out put in the alpha sticks. Once again all was good for few days then it all happend again they to now error at any freq. Tried the corsair memory, all was good once again for few days and errors came back. Now i am using the ocz pc6400 platinum edition sticks and they are working perfect now for 2 weeks. They were also about half the money as the others. Did i just kill 3 setts expensive ram? If so why"?

Thats odd, have you tried changing your vmch a bit since your FSB is higher to give the memory lil extra boost? i had to bring my vmch up to make dominatorc3 6400's run at advertised with 0 memtest 86+ errors. But I wouldnt be suprised, XBX2 seems to have killed my Dominators that are currently in the process of being replaced. They ran fine on my P5B, then I put em on XBX2 and they died so not really sure, Ive also checked the dimms with a MM and it read +/- .03-05v as set in bios. Try the Vmch and let me know how it turns out be interested to know.

im having issues .... getting stable at 450fsb @ 3.6

try raising the vcore .. it freezes after 45 mins of orthos

Change the "default" to 333 and change the 533 to 667. This will switch the nb to 1333 strap and keep the fsb:memory at 1:1.

ill give it a try .. trying to get stable at 450fsb

is it bad to run the vmch at 1.7 ? it seems like anything less then 1.675 and its unstable


should i go to the 2333 bios since everyone says thats the best overclocking one ?? currently on the 2507

I plan to overclock a good amount, going to have high end water cooling on the cpu and vga. Going to be a badaxe2, at minimum a 6600 if not a 6700 or quad. 4 gb bunch of raptors 700w psu
