Hi there! I have not vmod anything in my life so I'm a complete noob at this.
I currently have a HIS 4870, blue PCB and probably referenced design. Just to confirm, is this techpower voltmod guide applicable to me? And how does one change and monitor the voltage, like makaka did?

@ blazingfire: Take a look at your card. Does it sport 1 or 2 "VT1165" regulator chips? If yes, you won' t need a hardmod. Just use software described here

haha you're lucky.Mine couldn't do 880Mhz core...only 870Mhz with 1.5V on dice for 3DMark06:D

i got 3 card Palit HD 4870 and all of them do 900 mhz stable @ 1.4-1.5v , the best one did 980 Mhz under water with 1.6v and passed 3d mark vantage , all those card are sold now i keep my old HD 4870 which also rock solid @ 900 mhz , can do higher but i am already happy with the current result

I am relatively new here but i have some experience on ocing though.Anyway today i added a 2nd 4850 1gig but for my bad luck,it was the sapphire DUAL SLOT and not the reference that i expected...(which i have pencil modded to 821/1200 along with a musashi cooler)
What i need is for someone that really knows this thread,to point me to the page of the pencilmod of DUAL SLOT sapphire 4850 if possible cos 64 pages are a bit hard to look into..!

For the owners of the DUAL SLOT 4850 that vmod their cards,i d like to remind that the MEM VRMs should be cooled too!
I find that in both reference and custom PCBs the mem vrms are ignored but if u put a sink on them u llbe surprised how hot it gets!!
I put one in my reference and now in my DUAL SLOT for peace of mind!
I also added vMEM measuring points.

Tomasz25, the bigger VR You use, the safer it is. You have to measure def resistance to calculate the best value You could use...
Sorry to disagree with 1.), but that is not always true! As I already explained once or twice before, potentiometers tend to be highly non-linear in the lower resistance ranges. That means that for example when a 50K VR set to its max resistance and you want to have a a resistance decrease of ~5K, then you'll have to turn the screw more often than in case the VR was already preset to for example 10K before.
For vmodding a higher resistance rated poti with the same number of turns means having less precision for higher voltages. And that also increases the likeliness of killing hardware, due to overvoltage, as the resistance drops faster in the lower ranges.
It's always a tradeoff between precision in the higher voltage (lower resistance) ranges and higher default voltage with the variable resistor set to its max. A way around that "problem" BTW is using potentiometers connected in series.
The problem described aabove is the reason why the second part of your statement is the most important. ;)

I just wasn't specific with my post. I meant for 24/7 "jump". If he has intentions to do extreme OC with high Vcore, then lower VR is more suitable, as You already said.

someone soldered a 12v cable+a ground to each free spot.???
What would happen?
Should the card get more current?Overheat?Become more OCable???
it wont make any deference i think those pads are connected together.
you wont gain more oc it will probably drain more current but wont make a big deal

Hehe, I know that you already knew and what you meant to say. It's just that I myself had to learn the hard way, killing some hardware before really starting to think about the problem. That's why I like to emphasize it, in oder to keep others from making the same mistake. I can tell you, you feel really dumb after having killed a graphics card's memory, due to overvoltage, just because you did't think about the effect, that I described. You then know that you could very well still have a fully functioning video card if you were not that dumb. The positive effect, though, is that you definitively learn it this way. :D
