Can anyone please tell me if the 290x has the same crappy shim around the gpu (like 7970 does)? I hope not ...

havent seen a shim yet...
I thought this one was much more funny

This Radeon video is absolutely cool, and REAL!
first time i have seen the nvidia one.
better made then the ati one, which is giant sized. out of touch with reality.
95c can cook a steak though. after a very very very very very very very very very very very long time.
like 8 hours
AMD working on R9 280X with Tahiti XTL GPU
AMD Really:confused:?
R9 280X $300 is currently the best deal at the moment Because R9 280X as we know have the same Performance for both HD 7970GHZ /GTX 770.
so is this means that the new card will be more expensive? hmmmm
Quote:
According to info from Ocaholic.ch, AMD is still working on an R9 280X version based on an updated Tahiti XTL GPU which should be ready sometime in November and silently replace the R9 280X currently running on the Tahiti XT2 GPU.
AMD apparently plans to do a "running change" which means that there will be no announcements for the new GPU or even a name change for the R9 280X graphics card and the only way to differentiate these cards is to check out the BIOS version. As always, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt since nothing is carved in stone and AMD can simply use the new GPU to launch a new graphics card under a different name but currently AIB partners have been told that it will be a running change.
According to the same source, Tahiti XTL should have a lower power consumption and thus cooler. Unfortuantely, it is still not clear if there will be any specification changes, higher clocks or changes in the feature set. Eventually someone will spot it when it hits retail/e-tail in November.
maybe its optimization of the lines, cheaper to produce. using less power and being cooler. means they can cut costs elsewhere. and do a price drop again.
if the XTL ends up in 270's and 280's, could easily bring prices down another $50 maybe even $75.
like 7870 tahiti, and 7970 , 270 280.
plus might be for only third parties, to do their own designs around, giving a greater advantage to them. for overclocking potential.
maybe it will be cool enough to passively cool, at 7850 perf levels using a tripple slot cooler.
It's maybe the Tahiti TSMC HPL 28nm version and not the HP process anymore ?
I think so

Getting ready to push that vacation button any second.
I am only on my first cup of coffee so go ahead, make my day !
Posted a bit further,

Note the record on hwbot with a titan at 1809mhz ( Kingpin ) is at 50 pnts over this one.. nice clock scaling..
Some nice clocks on CPU and GPU there. That CPU voltage is scary though. Would love to know what hardware mods they did to the 290x.
The final score is skewed by the physics score due to the difference in CPU clock speed, the GPU score tells the story.

You're right. But going even further just look at individual scores:
R290X - Titan
GT1 95.01 - 118.87
GT2 116.73 - 116.21
GT3 155.61 - 147.48
GT4 75.04 - 69.61
PT 67.87 - 65.83
CT 81.98 - 78.64

The Radeon R9 290 will be powered with an 8+6 Pin power configuration which represents a TDP of over 250W. The display outputs include Dual-DVI, HDMI and Display port with Eyefinity compatibility and just like its bigger brother, it is supposed to run games at 4K resolution with ease. The Radeon R9 290 would hit the market on 31st October for a price of around $449.The results we are looking at shows that the Radeon R9 290 is just a few percentages ahead of the GeForce GTX 780 at reference clocks but performance surpasses the GeForce GTX Titan when overclocked. The most notable thing here is that the temperatures between the R9 290X and R9 290 are same featuring the same cooler and has two profiles (Uber/Quiet Modes). The TDP of the card is around 250W and you can see the performance and Frame Rating test in the charts at the bottom of this article

I wonder why there are no results of 290x watercooled? ( Not even from waterblock manufacturers)
I mean, people already have cards, waterblocks are available for purchase as well
