On hardware.fr, that's not the case too.
People are disappointed with the noise, power consumption and weak OC capabilities.
When you know what a 780 overclocked can do, this reference 290X sounds not really interesting.
The price is good though, hopefully, but nVidia will certainly answer with a price slash.

780 Uber is 780 stock with turbo ON. As you can see, 780 is still very well placed and the cards is way more silent and with good overclocking capabilities.
Only flaw is price but for how long now that Hawaii is out ?
The massive power increase from a small overclock and overvolt sounds like it is near thermal runaway. The hotter silicon is, the "better" it conducts electricity, which can cause excess power draw and various other potentially big issues if you go too far. I know the temp was about the same, but there is a breaking point when the voltage gets high enough at the same temp.
It would not surprise me if getting the temperatures down would also bring power draw down quite a bit in that case.
It means nothing you overclocking to 1200mhz if it throttles to 700-800 all the time. That's why the discrepancies between reviews. They all hit 94*C but throttle to different speeds depending on how good "the silicon" is.

Where does it reach 1200+ with ease? I haven't seen a single website get to those clocks?
Wizards the only one who overvolted and he stopped short at 1190mhz, while the card was spinning at 100% and consuming somewhere around 550 watts.
To give you another idea how poor this power scaling is, a gtx 780 lightning while being overvolted a similar amount consumed "only" 300 watts, while achieving a base clock of 1180mhz but a likely boosting with in game clock of 1300+.
With ease, would imply that all the website could do it, without drastic and generally non-game ruining attributes with it. 100% fan and 550 watts is experience ruining.
And the fact he didn't even reach 1200 with those extreme settings, generally just makes you a liar.
Drives should bring more performance and we cant forget mantle.

By the way this is an R290 I've flashed with R290X BIOS, works a tread, but shaders not unlocked, but can now hit 1220 core and 6600 RAM on the regular R290 as well. At these speeds this also obliverates Titan. Incredible value!

Facts are you can flash the cards, get voltage control on both X and none X. Things will only improve.

stock bios, apparently the Asus 290x bios takes the card all the way post 780HOF.
Lol, we are on xsystem m8.. nobody is using stock cooler, its like overclock an Intel CPu with their own stock cooler... with the scaling of overclocking anyway, this card dont need match the overclocked mhz of Titan, like the 7970 before, this card scale really well with clock.. really, really well in term of performance .. like for the 680 vs 7970,,, 50mhz on the 7970, you need 75mhz on the 680 for obtain the same scaling. ( with the 290 it seems it is more 100mhz vs 50mhz ).
No overclockers care to know if the cooler is good or not for overclocking, all we want to know is if it is good for overclocking, not the cooler... the core, the gpu, we absolutely dont care if you can reach 1100 or not with this reference cooler, what i want to know, is what you can reach in term of frequencies and performance with H2o, Chilled watter, Phase change, Dice, or LN2... The first records on Quad CFX have been fall the first day.. maybe they scale not so well in dual and tri, who know
Sometimes i ask me if we are still on Xs... Someone is crying loud about overclocking on stock cooler. what next ? This guy is a noob, he cant push 6ghz on an 3960x with the stock Intel cooler ?

I think it's mainly you who is not excited. I also think one has to wear real dark green glasses not to be exited if not blind.
Even if nvidia slash the prices, the only reason is R9-290X performance/value, even people wearing light green glasses should be exited because they're going to save some money thanks to AMD.
Now there is no way Nvidia will slash the GTX Titan price by $450, even if they do, it still will not solve the problem, many people now game on higher resolution and that's where the R9-290X is the king.
For me this is no-brainer. I can't buy GTX Titan if it cost ONLY $549 or even less than the R9 290X. The ONLY reason I'm going to upgrade is, my next TV/monitor is going to be 39 to 50 inch 4K ultra HD, I will buy 2 cards. The R9-290X is 10 to 23% faster than GTX Titan at 4K resolution.
Now some people might say why don't you wait for the GTX 780 Ti (who knows when that will come), OK no problem i still do not have the 4K UHD monitor. The problem is, the GTX 780 Ti has to be about 10% faster to be same as the Titan in lower resolutions, than it needs another 10-23% to be as fast as R9-290X at 4K, that's not going to be easy and who knows the NV price for that.

Yes since couple of years gpu oc with stock cooler is sonething you shouldnt expect much. Even in cpu it is the deal. Who tried to oc an i920 with stock cooler?

So 1200 mhz MSI R290x Lightnings !!! @ 600$ man cant wait to see the custom PCB , cooler , 290x's 780ti is trembling already haha.
I would take these results with caution. First, the 23% difference was only observed in one game, the others were about 10%. Second, it is not clear what clocks the cards ran at. It is entirely possible that the Titan was more held back than the 290X due to the Titan having only 80C of temperature to work with - something you can easily change like you can set the uber mode on the 290X btw.
If you look at more detailed benchmarks, you will find that both cards perform roughly the same per clock at 4k. Sometimes one is in front, sometimes the other:

I skipped 780 on launch, waited for Lightning, paid through the ass for is then two weeks later these come out and nvidia announces the Ti .... so pissed ...
