ouch I have a cheap KB9910 IBM with a MX510 mouse and a crappy Mitsubishi 22" CRT :(

guess I should sell my 4400+ and X1800 and buy a P3 and 4200ti


interesting comments on the differences in CRT and LCD but the discussion isn't Laptop LCDs its desktop LCDs. Quality CRTs have better blacks and better colors due to the way they produce those blacks and colors. Its very difficult for a LCD that is black lite to reproduce a true black.

So has any Oblivion benchmarks been released yet?

And does 7900 series really support HDR+AA w/ SM3.0 FP16 like ATI's X1900 series?

Btw, Oblivion uses HDR+AA w/ SM3.0 FP10, that's why HDR+AA in Oblivion is only supported by the R500 'Xenos' GPU and not G71/R580.

not quite the x1900xtx but i will give my experience of things

having owned a gf 2 mx/ultra, gf4 ti4200, 6600gt, 6800gt/ultra and on the ati front, radeon 8500, 9600xt (shocking image quality)9800se/aiw, x800 pro - i would say i prefer ati image quality on the whole, the difference isnt much but is noticable going from one to the other

however for some reason my 9600xt had the worse IQ i've ever seen, worse than any other card i've had, i think it was due to the optimisations in the drivers both the companies were upto at that time

so i would personally choose x1900xtx going on my past experience

ATi has better AF.
NVidia has better AA(SuperSampling > Multisampling, don't argue. Also 8xAA vs 6xAA)
ATi has HDR + AA in games using FP16 HDR(ONLY USABLE IN SS2 AND FAR CRY! Beyond that and it's chop city as the card can't do it playable)
NVidia has Digital Vibrance(Makes colors MUCH more vivid in games!)

In the end, it comes down to preference.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned but ATI has digital vibrance too under saturation in the 3d mode.


Seriously, I'm not sure if this was mentioned either, but after going from GTX to XTX, the PICTURE that is sent to my monitor is MUCH BETTER, and has nothing to do with drivers.

In my bios for instance, on nvidia, the text looks blurry white. On ATI I can see each individual pixel making up the letters. It's quite signficiant, and is enough so that I won't go SLI 7900GT and sacrifice it

I love the saturation slider in CCC. I am however using the Omega based drivers without CCC so unfortunately can no longer take advantage of this option. I keep hoping either the author of the Omegadrivers or Ray Adams himself, the author of Ati Tray Tools can implement this option in for users of non CCC based ATI Drivers. I have emailed about this but as usual recieve no response.

What has your experience been with those omega drivers anyway ?

EXTREMELY GOOD. Sorry for the caps but that is how much I mean it. I have used the omegadrivers since my 9800 and have never had an issue. Smaller footprint, tweaked IQ (in a good way) and no performance loss, in some cases a small gain. I love how you don't need .net framework installed nor do you need to have CCC installed to make any chances. The basic and included ATI Tray Tools does it all minus the saturation slider and hopefully only for now. I use that and ATI Tool for my voltage/clock/fan changes and have never had an issue with anything I do. If you haven't already give the omegadrivers a try.

me too, try and email em. I did so with nothing but perhaps if more than just myself do so they may look into it. They have emulated every other setting in CCC so I see no reason why they couldn't do the same for this too. It would be a nice addition as I find the desktop much sharper and more vibrant with this setting.
