It just matters If one got the CPU thru some unofficial channels, like ES CPUs or maybe early review samples. They want to hide it so in the worst case scenario chip cannot be traced back to where/who it came from. Say, CPU is not released yet and some people already have it months before it's official release. They played with it and sold it before offcial announcement. If AMD found this chip (by serial number) the person that got it from them *could be* (no more EEs for him) in trouble as they sold the chip that technically does not exist yet. I guess, that would not be good.
For all of us getting processors by regular channels (retail, online stores...) it's doesn't mean a squat. It's just another serial number. AMD uses those when you RMA the chip and to track the distribution of sales. It doesn't matter If anyone besides you knows it. Someone someday started smudging those out and now everybody does it, no matter what chip they have...
