Look at OCAU.com. They have a big Opteron thread, and the first post has some results compiled. If only that jerk at dfi-street would have the consideration to do the same...Quote:

It's not going over 2800 with 1.550 :(. I need more grapes to crank the VID any higher!!!

After my current upgrade of DFI's new SLI-DR Expert board, some Geil One RAM, and an Opteron 146 CABYE, I'm going dual core. I can only afford about $300 on the proc though. Obviously these are at least equal to the 3800+ ... does anyone have any realworld benchmarks of the dual-core Opteron vs. X2?? Or really any real-world benches to compare with known X2 benches?
The 165 Opty and the 3800+ X2 are about the same price, and seem, from the clock speeds, to be about the same -- but the cache makes the Opty better in my eyes, though I'm closer to a n00b than a Guru so my opinion is moot.
I loved Doom 3 and Quake 4 is fun as hell, so I'd obviously see performance gains in those no matter which dual-core I went with. But which is better for everyday tasks, like ripping DVD's and encoding and all that fun schtuff?

I'd take the clockspeed over the cache any day.Quote:

As you can see, none of my real world apps take much advantage of the cache, with the exception of compiling the Linux kernel. But even if that 200 MHz more clockspeed do better than the bigger cache.
these socket 939 operons work with regular non-ECC memory correct? i spent good $ on my 2 x 1024 kit and i dont wanna waste it.
Just from skimming those benchmarks.. theres a lot more there than is needed to prove the extra 512 cache isn't that useful. Its not even very uniform.
I'de take the extra cache over an extra 200mhz. With apps and games getting larger by what seems like the month, it will probably be more useful in a year or two. If you're going for benches and replace cpus a few times a year, then I'de take the mhz.
plus, the dual core opys are ocing pretty well!
Thats just a recommendation from AMD.Quote:

Seemed to help alittle, not sure if it was really worth destroying my AMD warranty.. Oh well. (Was my first time removing the IHS.. ) :)

Just ordered a 165! What steppings are good, I'll post my stepping when I receive my new baby! :toast:
I think you mix up ECC with registered/buffered.Quote:

ok thanks, i have no reason not to get one of these now. I wonder how they will do with the 8-phase power in the new asus sli32 motherboard i might get (if it wasnt for the retarded layout, htf do they expec people to sli and use a sound card?).
Damn Monarch. Thery charge the credit card and ship nothing. I will never EVER buy anything from monarch again. its a pain to cancell this now. Damn them!Quote:
Unfortunately, we have just been informed by AMD directly that there was a manufacturing issue that occurred on this particular processor. AMD does not expect to have stock on this processor until the end of this month, and that may change depending on the manufacturing process.
i thought the law required etailers not to charge CC until they have the item in stock and ready to ship? i wonder what the manufacturing problem was.
I though that too! It would not say anything if they didn't charge it. Now they did charge and ship on 5th decemebr? WTF is this?
*update*
What to cancell? Think twice:
They did confirm that if I cancell they will charge those 15%Quote:
Monarch Computer Systems reserves the right to impose a 15% custom order cancellation fee for the cancellation of any order relating to a custom system after such an order has been placed by the Customer. Any purchases made with American Express credit cards may be subject to an additional charge of up to 3% on returns at the sole discretion of Monarch Computer Systems. This additional charge on returns does not apply to purchases made with other credit cards or to American Express purchases that use PayPal.
Haha guys, this makes me really happy, I just got this e-mail from monarch:
It just shipped last night and is scheduled to arrive here tommorrow!! I will post my results asap.Quote:
Update!
Shortly after we sent our last email to you, AMD contacted us to let us know that they were able to get a partial shipment of the OEM Opteron 165 processors out to us. (Enough to cover our existing orders) We are expecting these to arrive shortly, so we WILL be able to ship these chips out to you much sooner than expected. I do apologize for the confusion, but I wanted to inform you as quickly as possible of the recent development.
Thank you,
Monarch Computer Systems, Inc.
not bad, at least they had cause to charge the CC. i can't wait for your results, i'm gonna buy wither a 165 or a 170 as soon as my X2 3800 sells.
I hope this turns out right and I get my 165. I will post info when I get it.
Newegg had a price drop. 170 retail for 402.00 and 165 OEM for 289.00. Forget about Monarc and Mwave for now.
Is the 0530 TPMW stepping available to the 165,or is it just the 170's seen with this stepping ?
Its alright for u guys theres no sign off any dual core opterons here in the UK  and i had just convinced myself to get a 4800x2 because off fading mem controllers and the dual core opterons get released, well in your neck off the woods surpose I will have to wait longer for the release of the A8N32 than u guys too - and to top it all the Asus 'Extreme TOP Edition' nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 256MB has gone out off stock and is unavailible.
Just when u decide what u want its all out off stock or not in the UK
mwave still cheaper
Don't you have anyone in the US? If so just send them the cash and have them buy/ship them to you. I'm not sure how much duty you'll have to pay, though.Quote:
