They are both very minor flaws. Considering you had one Turion that made it through AMD with a chip, and now two 3700+, I'm wondering if it's really worth returning. I'd understand maybe one or two out of a hundred slipping through the cracks, but considering you've bought about ten processors and three have had these flaws, I don't think AMD would ship them out unless they were 100% functional.

What I'm wondering is if small chips like this are very common, it's just that we don't realize it because most A64s are covered with the IHS. For all we know most A64s have minor imperfections like this, but because it doesn't effect stability people don't even realize it.

I'd say wait and see what AMD says. :confused:

That's why I am asking considering that this is a new process. Bartons, Palominos, T-breds. They were always perfect. I got them on Friday so I will have to wait until monday to find out what the deal is.

you have a good point here. though of all the guys that have taken off heatspreaders, i don't think i've seen any with small chips in the core. maybe something in the testing does that to the cores without the heatspeader on? :confused: :(

Every A64 I've ever had has had chips/dings in the core...some quite large. But they've always worked just fine, so who cares? Quit being so picky, I mean, it's not like you're ever gonna see that core again once you put it in the computer.

Just for the record, my 3400+ Mobile CH(130nm SOI not 90nm SOI) had a flawless core, I would at least ring them up to make sure it's not, like you say, some dumb ass causing these dings/chips during packaging or whatever.

I work as an engineer at quite a big company and I can tell you, our production line usually goes through growing pains before we iron everything out

well, i hit 3117.2mhz, but i went to get the validation file too fast, and ended up with this:

i think i'd have to sell this chip and get another one... though having the first oc'ed newark is kinda fun

Hey, are you using official DFI bios, or Oscar Wu's (jess1313) beta bioses? Those work a lot better with mobiles. The clawhammer mobiles, at least.

right now, beta 4/15. i will use the modded version of it as soon as i can get it ;)

somehow those ram issues fixed themselves thoughl. i think i missed something critical that was preventing me from getting my ram too much further

It's coming soon. I ordered my DFI nF3 board and an X850 XTPE. Those two should be in tomorrow or Wednesday. We'll compare notes next weekend. ;)

my s754 does 2470 rock stable@1.55v , and run's 24/7 @ 2400mhz@1.4v
@ 2500 mhz superpi M32 run's but when I game, the game crashes after 1.5h so...

I was thinking of buying an +3000 mobile but I've chanced my mind :)

Update on the processors:

This is exactly what an AMD engineer said:

These defective look only cosmetic and should not affect the
functionality of the processors. I don't foresee any problem using
them.

AMD says they're ok and everyone else that I talked said that there would be no problems. Luckily the processors come with a 1 Year warranty. Of course, that goes away once you OC it. ;)

EDIT: So don't be worried if you come across a chip like this. :)

3700+ is being shipped out Thursday, and will hopefully be here by Saturday. ;)

Mad props to Vandi, of course! Can't wait to see how this chip overclocks. At least I know I'm guaranteed 2.4GHz out of the box, LOL.
