ok, mind giving details on how you went through it all?
Step by step please? Some of what's been posted didn't make sense.... I've set boinc to finish the WU's it has and retrieve no more, so I'm pretty much ready to go, but don't quite follow the details....
From what Bob said I think all you need to do is:
1. Detach from your account (see IFMU's pic a few posts down)
2. Open up windows command line
-wi7: windows key->"cmd"->enter
-older windows: windows key->run->"cmd"->enter
3. Navigate to your boinc directory where "boinc.exe" is:
-"cd <your path>" should work (my path is C:\Program Files\BOINC)
4. Enter:
"--project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org <jon's weak key>"
Alternatively you should be able to just enter "<your path> --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org <jon's weak key>" and it should work the same as the previous three steps.
I'll try it out as soon as I work off my current queue and get the weak key from MM.
I got it working too....loonym's name under the account field on the projects tab.
Red Maw beat me to additional steps.
I had to detach from WCG first. The command errored the first time I tried, saying "already attached to project" or something along those lines.
Glad to see some points on his account. Once my current work is done I will put some cores on it also. Many thanks to Dave and Bob for helping on this. And a big thanks to all that put rigs on Jon's acount.
OK I want to do this with my quad socket AMD that I just got running, but it is running linux not windows (I tried, it has a goofy BIOS that doesn't have full ACPI support and I couldn't get it to load the setup from the EFI). How the heck do I switch over from my account to his using the weak key in Ubuntu?
Sparky, there was a post a bit ago in this thread that told how to handle linux. It was similar to our command line type thing.
@IFMU, I did make a few unstated assumptions on my "how too".... sorry. It assumes you have detached yourself from the project first. That way you can re-attach under loonym's account using the steps I described. We know for sure it works, so if you're having trouble let us know so we can help out. I'm running on a vista ultimate 64 rig right now. More will join it soon.
As to aborting WUs in process, well I have to admit I don't worry about it too much since they get re-assigned right away when you properly detach. We are properly detaching, not nuking an install. Some of those WUs will go out as high priority most likely, but that's OK. I get those all the time since my rigs are rated as reliable by the servers. I also understand some folks don't like to do this, that's fine too. Just "accept no new work", let them run out and make the change.
@Dave, I think it would be good to pursue getting Jon's actual login PW and actual hard key. If you would just keep it, it would give us a way to manage his account if we need too. Once in a while WCG changes things up. Right now we are permanently stuck with what Jon last did to his account. For example, what if a new project comes up? I think if we keep a very tight reign on who has his login, it would be OK. I think you would be the logical one to have access. LMK what you think.
I'm going to crunch at least a few rigs on Jon's account until further notice.
Regards,
Bob
PS, I'm also happy to see we got a few points on his account today as well
Ah found it. Thanks... Should have looked before asking.
Got it!
Thanks for the details and all that jazz. ^_^
Oh, it's only a dual core laptop, but it gives out a few points. It's my main rig, so I don't mind adjusting it. The other computers I have on my profile aren't mine directly, so it's more of a pain to switch around.
I'll prolly switch one around sometime and just leave it to run permanently.
Again, thanks for the details on getting it going!
I do hope that you get it, Dave. I'd personally prefer to be crunching HCC & HFCC on his account, though I recognize that all projects are worthwhile. I have the Pentium D 805 up and running--it seems to be drawing more power than my E2140 did at 2.66GHz, though. I'll see about borrowing a Kill-A-Watt to find out.
Yes, I understand. I'm curious as well but, I don't think so. I don't have any Computing for Clean Water work units. (just HCC, HFCC, HCMD,FA@H)
I suppose, if we don't get his credentials, we could always create a Loonym XS Memorial account for him. One that we could control the way we want. And simply run the same command for weak key attachment. Not my idea. Breezed over something similar in another forum for a different project that lost someone close to them.
ah, thank you. that was so simple
Could someone PM me the weak key please? So I have it once I run down the cache on my quad AMD I can switch it over.
please send me the weak key as well! why don'y we post the weak key here? if i understand correctly nothing negative could happen all we can use it for is to crunch work units on his account and nothing else?
Thx to Bobsama for providing the core of this to me. I will try to be excruciatingly detailed in how to do this... I now have 5 quads crunching away on Jon's account. Four of them used this latest method, so I know it works.
This method is for windows based installs. You linux folks seem to be all over this already...
1. Detach from your WCG account. (This assumes you are already running on your own account. If not, what the hell are you waiting for, install BOINC!!)
2. Create a blank text document using notepad. Open it up from your start button>accessories>notepad.
3. Copy and paste the following code below step 4 if your BOINC folder is in your 64-bit directory, or in a legacy version of Windows. This will cover most. If you chose a special place to stick your BOINC install, adjust the path to match in the below code text, on the very first line.
4. Copy the Code below into the notepad text file. Copy ONLY this code in bold...:slobber::
cd C:\Program Files\BOINC
boinccmd.exe --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org 470921_2ad6aebdc8149b6aa1ab551d23ed04d1
exit
5. Save the file as "loonym project attach.cmd". Save it right on your desktop if you would like to make it really easy.
6. Double click the "loonym project attach" icon on your desktop.
You should see your BOINC MGR start attaching and downloading WUs. The name under the project tab should be "loonym". You are done. The WUs you crunch will go to Jon's account.
You can now throw the file on a stick or transfer it to any machine you want to bring over. Just throw it on the desktop of each machine.
Many thx to Bobsama for posting this to me. This info does contain Jon's weak key. This was asked earlier. I did not see a problem when we posted what was Scott's actual hard key before, so the soft key should not be a threat.
Fair warning.... I would add that if posting our revered and departed team member's weak key becomes a problem, I will personally hunt the trouble maker down, worldwide, physically. You do not want me to show up on your doorstep.... I'm certain to be followed by many of my teammates here if I can't get the job done....
As to the comments before on what we are crunching for projects, remember these are Jon's preferences. I will crunch those. As some of you know, I specialize in HCC, but Jon's feelings on the topic was that all of the medical projects were worthwhile. Even when he was dying of cancer....
One further note is that Jon's WU queue seems very small. I think we should bump that up a little if we can gain access to his account PW.
Regards, and thanks for helping out in this cause. I think Jon is smiling a bit for our efforts here.
Bob
I'm curious, where can I look to see if my systems have posted to his account? Like to see what sort of points I'm putting on his account. Just curious overall.
Where can I look to see what points we're doing?
