57xx and 58xx locking problems with stripes

Whats interesting from reading through this thread is that the problem exists on so many different hardware combos and OS's, and with different cards from the 5000 family, overclocked or not.
I mean I'm using a 5770 at stock speeds on AMD's own Dragon platform. (All of my main components are listed as Dragon certified). And it's just plain unusable.
I've been using ATi since the days of the Rage II, but if this is how their quality control works under AMD's ownership, then I'll be switching to nVidia.

I don't think it has to do with AMD's ownership. My former HD4870 was also produced under AMD's ownership and that card was absolutely rockstable and always worked flawless.

It's just the drivers for these cards that plain suck. i kinda regret gettin 2x 5770 instead of another 4870 but it's a done deal now. Let's hope ATI will come up with a driver that will solve all this so we can start enjoying our cards.

That's your hypothesis. My card(5870) won't run stressful 3d titles at it's advertised clocks. However if I clock both the memory and core down 7% it plays everything flawlessly. Is this a driver issue? Unlikely.
More like hardware that does not live up to the hype.

See, thats whats bugging me. Nobody really knows, and the problem is different for everybody. Thats whats so frustrating.
I've tried underclocking my card, core and RAM. It made no difference to me.
(Although I'd be pissed if thats what I had to do, because it's not as advertised).
Maybe this has to do with the low yield issue at TSMC. Maybe they shipped GPU's that they knew where not up to scratch just to meet demand. That would explain why some work, some don't, some work if underclocked, really bad ones still won't work even underclocked.

Well, you can still rma the cards. Sure it is pain in the ass but there is not much you can do about it.

A week or so passed and I can say that my 5870 works absolutely flawless :) I guess I should be lucky this time

Understand. It's sort of wishful thinking at this point since refund is out of the question and RMA is all we have. I, as you, will continue to hope that drivers fix the problem.

so let me get this straight....

there are two 2D clocks:

2D low (157/300)

2D high (600/1200)

correct?

how do you change the 2D low clock?

i tried making a 2D profile in afterburner but it only makes one for 2D high

so if I can change the 2D low clock to like say 400-500 then this stuttering a stripe problem would go away.

I don't think it is drivers
Maybe I'm wrong and it is (I hope) driver related, but I don't have this problem here and looks like anybody with an "old" HD5000 do not have the problem too

but people with newer cards have the problems, maybe ATI made a new version of the cards and this new version is :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed.

what is really strange is ATI not saying anything about that :shakes:

Mine was with the stripes, from one day to the other after doing a clean install, this time what i did diferent just like a said a few days ago was changing from IDE to AHCI, installed a new soundcard and turned off onboard card. A now it's just wow, no problems at all. nothing zip. I'm running 9.11 + latest ati bios!

I would say more that's an update to windows, which one i don't know! But from everything we've seen so far, it's the most common thing that would fit the most to all users

I had some strange issue with my Gigabyte HD5850. CCC max is 775/1125, but mem over 1100MHz gives me "grey" screen or random freezes on 3D. I use XP SP2 with 9.12. Yesterday I added 9.12 hotfix also, but didn't seem to help. But today occured new bug. Cursor is flickering while moved on Firefox over some links etc. Sometimes it just dissapeares when no moving.
I have GPU-Z monitoring also and no difference, if it is 157/300 or 725/1000.

My 5970 only locks up if I allow the temps of the cores to go below 30C....it's watercooled. I have to disengage the fans sometimes and just have the pump running with no fans going to make sure it stays above 30C idle while I'm just using the internet or whatever desktop activities I'm doing. Let it drop below 30C and it either artifacts in 2D then locks up or just locks up and I either have to hard reboot it or I get the driver recovered message.

Usually upon first boot up after the comp has been off for an extended period I have to fire up furmark staraight away to bring the cards temps above 30C then do whatever I have to with my cooling to make sure it stays above 30C....hassle I know but thems the breaks. :rolleyes:

Your 5970 is just unbelievable.

Well, I think it isn't a "coolbug" (30C is not exatcly cold is it? :p:).

My wierldy cool stock 5870 isn't having any problems and its coolness lays at a comfy 28C when browsing XS.

I did get the stripes and gray screens when going over 900Mhz on Gpu or over 1250Mhz on the memory. So I'll just keep it stock and hope for the problems to stay away.

What response i received from Sapphire to the problem that i had with HD5850.


"We got similar issue by using GA MB , and they update the latest MB BIOS and fix the issue of mouse cursor.

Can you please contact DFI to see if they had a latest one that can let you fix the problem.

If not , please contact your retailer to check the VGA card in another MB to see if will see the same problem."



That reminds me of Sapphire HD3870 BBA who have problems with cooling. I had to write 30's BIOS to solve the problem of cooling and OC's

I is suddenly happening with me also.
I did put milkyway@home at susped overnight and bam system freezed.
Then in every reboot I have those damn stripes, just minute after logging ing Windows 7 x64 :o

after sending back 2 XFX 5870s, i tried out a Sapphire one, and so far ive had no problems

Dang I'm still in limbo on this. If I return my card to xfx to get a new one I'm two weeks without a card. What a pain in the ass. Currently running at 850/1200(xfx xxx 5870) and slowly upping the clocks a little at a time to see what it's comfortable with.

I have seen some grey screens on my 5850 due to high overclocking as well.. my 24/7 stable clock is 950/1200 w 1.15v(Stable for every kind of stressing, benching, and gaming) ..

I have some problems when I try 1000/1250 @ 1.225, I can gain stability with furmark and ATI tool stress tests for 20+min with no problems(stable in games and other benchmarks as well). But I get locking or grey screen as soon as I try to benchmark with Furmark with NO MSAA.. This kind of bugs me a lot, so I tried to watch and note all the VDDC temps on GPU-Z while overclocking. I noticed that as soon as VDDC phase temps shoots to 100+ then this happens. Is there a way to keep VDDC cooler or am I just being paranoid about these temps?

Note: when VDDC temps are below 100, then I can use furmark benching with no MSAA just fine with no grey screens or lockings...

Me also at the beginning i had some gray screen of death, took me a long time to know what it was, someday i ran memtest and found out i had one doa memory stick. It was causing me all the problem i had. Got some better memory and i also changed my mobo ( didnt liked my original p55m ud2 so i got a p55 gd65) And since then even with 9.11 driver i never had a single gsod even with some extreme setting to get into top10 on hwbot for vanatage performance hd5770x1. So make sure everything in your overclocking is stable. Make sure you dont have some bad memory stick. Then if you still have those gsod then there is a possibilities it is some faulty memory chip on your gpu. But first off, check in the windows event journal to see what is the error that make your gsod appears. GSOD for hd5xxx is the new BSOD. So really try to rule out everything else, if you had then contact your manufacturer for a rma cause it is possible the memory chip can be bad.

That was just a resume of what was mostly said in the link.

Also, sadly the new hd5xxx have already high memory clock so using even higher memory clock can cause big instability. Even at 1200mhz memory is not a bottle neck on the hd5xxx card. You only need it for 3dmark.

ok ok, this post is very interesting

but..if it is a "new" BSOD, why there's no BSOD when I use my old 9600GT??

see, I get this GSOD some seconds after Windows finish starting up, but when I reboot everything stays OK, I can run 3Dmark, Dirt2, Crysis, fullHD-videos (I have alread runned uengine bench for 15 hours lol, so I'm pretty sure the card is ok) but if I reboot again I see the GSOD in the same way..seconds after windows finish reboot..rebooting again fix the problems, but everytime I reboot this happens again.

But there's no BSOD if I put another video card at all, so is it like those drivers are more "sensitive" to system's instability?

Then it could also be a windows 7 problem, i know alot of people are running windows 7 and have that problem. Maybe someone should try it out with windows xp.

I tried to overclock my Cpu a bit more to get the most out of my HD5870 and finally ran into this problem.
It is 100% repeatable when overclocking my cpu or ram over the limits. With too low cpu vcore I got the grey bars randomly when browsing the forums and instantly when stressing the cpu.
It happens just like normal lockups and bsods earlier but now it just comes with the grey stuff.

Someone else mentioned that an overclocked cpu could be the issue, but it's not for me. I normally run my PII 940 @ 3.6, but I backed it off to stock 3.0 and still I get constant crashes/stripes.
Some games crash with stripes, some lock up for a few seconds before crashing to the desktop with the ATi driver stopped working message.

+Edit, should add that some games work fine, like Call of Juarez, and Dirt 2. Very strange.
