hey Andy, what models of 8500GT? there is a 256 and a 512 version
8500GT (65€~95€) it's a bit more expensive than 8400GS...
I don't know if I'll be able to play...
Need to know what model is... 256 or 512MB version?
Are everyone DDR2?
Hmm, I just ordered the 8400GS, I don't think I will be inn with the 8500GT. But anyway, the rules seems great. GL HF!
Uhh 64-bit or 128-bit 8500GT? GDDR2 or GDDR3? Nearly double in price for the decent 8500GT's compared to the 8400GS. If we are stepping up to the 8500GT there is no point going with a 64-bit GDDR2 card as that is a... 8400GS.
I think we need to decide on ONE brand and ONE model of card to make this defnitive. Again, I don't care which but if I'm going to buy a hundred dollar card I'm going to use it for someones HTPC and not blow it up.
why not keep it all simple and just say 512MB 8500GT from where ever - there's plenty on ebay and such like for folk to go grab a bargain ;)
i personally preferred the idea of the hd2400 or 8400gs. reason being that going upto a 8500gt in the uk is double the price nearly, and as above. It gets to a price point where i would want to keep it for other uses.
Also the mentioned details about the memory limitations and that. wasn't the idea to pic a low card so more people can contribute and join. Also having areas that are classed as bottlenecks makes it more interesting in my eyes.
my opinion though i guess. if it ends up being a 8400gs, i will probably get one and join in. 8500gt i shall leave ya all too it. ;)

Im in! Can we use 3dmark05 too?
There is a Asus Card with GDDR3 memory, is that the one to use? has a nice HSF to.

i think that's not a good idea, ONE model is ok, but ONE brand is not... many times in so much different countrys you couldn't get the same brand that's sure... only if it's asus or gigabyte...
btw, i like the rules, i would like to join the challange with 8500GT too ;) (but it's around 80usd+ we would be more less to play...)
They are almost double the price here too but im still up for it :D
Ok, so it seems more people would prefer the 8400GS or the Ati 2400 for cost reasons. That's fine by me.
One problem with everybody doing the same make of card would have to be that it is available in all countries or we might exclude people. That would seem to favour the Ati 2400Pro slightly. Also, the 8400GS has just been done by hardware.info people so maybe people would like to blaze a new trail?
Can people post below their prefered choice on cards and I will see which is most popular by Wednesday/Thursday .. you can choose other cards as well such as the 8500GT but lets get the type of card sorted first before we decide whether to use one make or allow all.
I vote Ati 8400Pro as I am not keen on Ati and so like blowing them up :D
Please post your preference.
Regards
andy
I vote for the 8400GS... the 2400 pro has annoying clock limits and the 8500GT is probably a bit too much for a budget race (plus there are a few that are ddr3 that not all people might be able to get)
I would like to see a 8500 GT DDR3 card, but its a little bit too expensive, so I vote for 8400 GS.
I'd say 8400GS is more fun and also more accessible, because the CPU will be even less important.
Also, i can arrange a group buy for EVGA 8400GS so they're all from the same batch and we'll all fight with the same weapons, but i think this ruins the whole idea of affordability, since i'm in Europe.
8400gs is fine with me
But would prefer a 8500GT with 128bit

I'd prefer a 8500GT but if we go for a 8400GS are we talking about the 256MB low profile cards or the full size 512MB cards?
i agree with jan. i would prefer a 8500gt.
same opinion, 8400GS will be the most fun :D
the group buy is a very good idea, but because of the international shipping costs, could be a bit expensive, and this is a really low cost card at everywhere, the only question is about the brands... we will use same brand or not...
anyway, zakelwe: i think we need a sign up list soon, to see how many members are interested...
8400gs 256 or 512mb version :)
I'm in :) It will be nice to try these low cost cards.
I suggest:
8400GS 256MB (low profile) 64-bit. (33€ in here)
8500GT 256MB 128-bit. (52€ in here)
Can pick up these PALIT 512Mb 8400GS cards at scan for £30 inc VAT

Scan code LN21474
For UK people might be worth a look
I'm in with the 2400 or the 8400 as to brand, Asus and Gig is available globally, but I don't really care
I'd say 8400GS, any brand/memory.
