I like to "run what I brung" :rolleyes: Someone will always have a chip or other component that is blessed a little more than yours. It's all about making the best of what you have.

No snow left here, and it's starting to warm up. Good to see, but not so much for hardware cooling. This was our warmest winter on record.

I'll try another cpu when I find the budget, or when I thrash this one too hard :up:

I would use the same hardware as before but ‘m now using chilled water for CPU’s cooling.

I propose a series of tests that most of us already have and probably have tested many times. The kicker though is that all these tests must be run within the same operating system and at the maximum CPU clock for the most difficult test of the four listed below. In other words no swapping operating systems because one scores higher than another for a given test.

Below is an explanation of how to determine your systems final CPU speed (clocks) to be used during all final testing?

Test as described all the benchmarks listed below (Cinebench three times one after the other without a cool down period between each test). When you find the benchmark that’s highest clock at completion is the lowest clocking of all the listed benchmarks then that is your systems test speed for all four of these bench tests.

Example: the highest CPU clock that each bench test would complete, Vantage 4150MHz, Cinebench 10 4100MHz, 3DMark06 4175MHz and CrystalMark 4200MHz. Using this example, your systems CPU’s maximum speed for all of the bench tests would be 4100MHz. Any combination or setting of the NB, HT Link speed or memory speed is acceptable. If you decided another combination of multi or HTT would be better for any of the benchmarks that also is acceptable as long as the CPU’s speed does not exceed your system’s CPU’s test speed which in the example above was 4100MHz.

After all testing is complete add all four of the bench test scores together to determine you system’s overall test score.

I started out thinking of a Hybrid monster challenge, but it looks like my 4850 won't play nice with the graphics chipset in hybrid crossfire. I'd also love to mess with GPGPU, but I guess I'll wait till I have a 5XXX.

I love pc hardware. I love pc games. I like to play with both without freezing my butt off or having bits of hardware all over my desk. My proposal would have been to study the impact of various settings (cpu speed, cpunb, ram latency vs speed, etc.) on various games in a real world environment. Take a closed case, ambient temp, daily use system and see what makes the most difference in performance. Determine what IS fast, like Tony's article.

Whoops, all these words are overwhelming my H20 cooling! Gotta go!

The water block is an old swiftech socket A block. The ugliness you see in the pic is a piece of old computer case hammered into an adapter (since there were none available to mate socket A to AM3 :shrug: Imagine my shock). I actually have a friend that made one from scratch though!

I know you'll do us (Daves :cool:) proud. I'll eventually move to a new block. But it's fun to play MacGyver with these things :up: I'm also tempted to move my rad into the garage, and maybe take the intercooler off of my car (that one's for you charged:p: Makes me wanna change my name to turbo2000aero:ROTF:).

Who knows, maybe theoldtimer will need a dance partner.

I pulled mine in from the garage, since it is getting warmer here in Ohio lately, except night time. My intercooler idea went straight to the z24:p: never tried it out lol. So.. you running a turbo, what year is your car? I run a 3800 Series II Supercharged 3800, if my name doesn't make it obvious :p:. A work in progress every summer.

I have a 2005 Saab 9-2X Aero. It's basically a Subaru WRX, tweaked by Saab. It's ~150 lbs heavier, but better brakes, suspension, an STI steering rack, nicer nose and hood scoop, a little more refined overall. AWD 2.0 intercooled turbo. I haven't done anything to it yet, but all the aftermarket parts for the WRX fit...

I like to tweak cars as well as computers. I had a 240sx that I had done a lot to, but the winters here got to it :(

As for theoldtimer, I figure he may have a line on a great band :) Besides, he's probably my age :shocked:

is the mosfet-to-nb heatpipe detachable? or is it fixed to either heaysink or both?

Suggested Task List | Divide and Conquer

1. The Gigabyte metal top plate on the NB is removable. Lots of thermal mass in that heatsink. Pot on top of sink. Benchmark Stock vs. DICE. Several options for tools for UMA OC; check out chew*'s work he might have some suggestions. Photos. Lots of photos.
2. Block the UMA. Stock vs. H20 (might be too much trouble). 3D with CPU on H20 too.
3. Go buy a case and build an HTPC/KidPC. Thin and lean. Do it for the kids.
4. Let the prolific theoldtimer set up a test of his own divination. Do what he says. Or at least, whatever fits in 200 words.
5. Repeat chapter 1. Beat your own results?

Suggestions

1. Discuss BIOS/settings
2. Research UMA OC/Brian's thread
3. Build an HTPC (install Boxee, enjoy the show)
4. Lets try this on Win7

It's fixed but I think you could sustain DICE on the NB without overcooling the PWM. Is the PWM in contact with the HS or beside it? Must go look at board.

Ok Simon if you want me to decide on the final test set to be used below is how I plan to do?

I do believe that the IGP should be tested along with the new chipset in order to showcase the new features.

I know each of us have posted a list of the tests we would like to use so now I ask each of the other five testers to submit just one test out of their own list. I plan to include one of my tests into the final set of test so at least three other tests will be included. I think four (five max) different tests should be enough to keep us busy. Let me know if you want four or five total tests?

I would expect everyone to post stock scores for each of the test as a baseline and then everyone could overclock as they wish and post results as they test. I think different cooling solutions will be employed which should make the results varied and interesting.

thanks titan, i was hoping to keep the mosfet cooler on w/ the nb off, but no go. it looks to have been superglued/soldered to the mosfet heatsink.

chew's 3DMark2006 is 3200+. ill try to give it a go, if i can get 3Dmark2006 to run on an IGP. i've always had problems (3D wont even start). hopefully i figure out whats wrong(with the user that is.):ROTF:

yep, tried HDMI, DVI and VGA. All have the same issue. Now it won't POST. I was using AOD and it crashed hasn't came back up yet.:confused:

Edit: I think I know why it is acting weird. I found to little surface mount capacitors that do not a solid connection, they actually are loose.

anyone been messing with theirs yet? whenever i change the sideport memory to anything above default 1333mhz it show up as 600mhz in cpuz graphics tab (wrong) and 800mhz in gpuz (wrong)... when i leave it at default 1333mhz it shows as 667mhz in cpuz graphics tab (correct speed) and still shows the wrong 800mhz in gpuz tab :shrug: anyone know anything about this? i need to test it some more but i think it still may be raising the sideport mem speed even though its not showing any changes

(this one struggled hard on canyon so went w/ 1.5v for 1100mhz from then on)


need to do some more testing w/ the sideport mem. along w/ some other stuff still - going from 1333mhz sideport to 1640mhz took score from 2875 to 2991

also need to test some more w/ stability, 4.1ghz 1.53v was blend stable w/ air and water on my gd70 and fails prime after not too long, 10 min. or so on here..

Honestly anything over 4 gig on cpu will be useless.

Those pushing harder for cpu clocks will be dissapointed as it's an IGP and the IGP is the bottleneck.

For reference a 4 core 965BE made no diff over a 2core 550 in 06 and this is the only bench in the list bench that benefits from multiple cores except vantage which if you want bragging rights for a cpu score thats about all you get, impacts total score not one bit.

The one in Cincinnati/Sharonville. I just got back, went and picked up an OCZ ModXStream Pro 500 watt. I know they don't have a great reputation but the price was right and I really wanted a modular to replace the PSU in my HTPC down the road.

Gotta leave for work right now, but I should be able to get some testing done tonight....

I ran some benches on air today using the stock clocks. I put it together, installed the OS (Windows 7 RC 32-bit) and the benching software then started benching to get a baseline. I especially wanted to test the Sata controller so I installed four OCZ Vertex 30GB SSD drives in Raid 0 then partitioned the raid0 drive into a 20GIG and a 100GIG. I ran the HDD tests using the 20GIG.

i couldnt find a good enough "pot" -i even tried a sardine can
but the bottom is still a bit deep, the edges make contact with
the board and not the GPU. :mad: i got a toothbrushholder(aluminum
w/ very good mass) but its 1/2 inch too wide. the intel hsf was a good
idea but i doubt the AMD/ATI GPU would like that situation. :rofl:

btw, geekbench has 64-bit in your install folder (or start menu).
i think it will yield better scores. :up:

The board was acting weird and would not post have the time. I only got into windows once. So I began trying everything, flashed bios, clear bios many ways. I then decided to look over everything. I found these were loose and popped up were they were suppose to be soldered down. I took a tiny flat blade and nudged at them and they came right out. I have never had this happen before. This probably explains the weird bios image I posted earlier.

Well... I'm finally up and running, Win7 64bit RC1 installed.

I really can't believe it took me this long to get things going, but at least my board doesn't have Hyroglyphic Bios like Charged's... :p:

BTW: Chew*, if your watching this thread, the Mushkin Blacklines I bought appear to be the same IC's as the G.Skill ECO's....
They both have the same specs (1600 7-8-7-24 @ 1.35v)...
Hopefully they are, and Mushkin bins their chips a little better. ;)

I'll find out Monday. If I'm right they should do better than the D9KPT's on these Crucials, that's all I really wanted... :D

dave, whats your ambient temps? theres another strong canadian front coming through this weekend. looks like that fan will keep that 890GX at very good temps.
i didnt want to just plop a dice cube on the hsf, wont be effective w/o a liquid interface (acetone). if you have any ideas for a cylinder thats 2inches diameter max,
and preferably with good mass let me know. been all around town here looking for pencil holders, toothbrush holders, soda cans, sardine cans, measuring cups.. etc.

none of which were fit for the task at hand. :(
