my card games at 700 with just 1.158v no problem so I'm hoping I can get to 750 with just 1.2v so I don't have to hard mod, but I can always do a pencil mod if necessary

750 with pencil mod is quite simple. Just draw a line, and you are good to go for several hours:

Hey!Can someone give me a modded bios because I don't want to take the risk of modding a bios on my own? Thanks. :)
My card is a Sapphire 4850 and gets to 680 core 2300 mem out of the box (watercooled). :) Anything above 680 causes Fur Benchmark to freeze in 2-3 seconds.. so I guess I need more voltage.. :)
Take a pencil and draw some lines, then see if you can get 700MHz stable or not. Designate your overclocking goal.
I can give you my own BIOS (which gives 150/500 idle and 750/1100 load) but it's from a Powercolor card, and I have no idea what kind of effect it may have on a Sapphire card. Just take your own BIOS out, and modify it. It's safer that way.
What type of pencil should I use for the mod? Can you give me a screenie with the points I need to connect with the pencil?
900/1225 seems pretty stable so far, 1.41v load gpu, 2.07v memory. using msi bios on my visiontek.
it is weird though cause i was able to do 14200 on 3dmark06 w/ my ide 120gb hard drive w/ fresh install of windows w/ speeds at 855/1150.
i can only do 13980 w/ my card at 900/1225 w/ my 640gb raid setup using 7200.10. i wonder if i have some other app open that is hindering my score.
Just wondering, what does your 640gb hdd show up as in windows, mine only shows up as 596:mad: If anything that should be an advertised 600gb, losing 44gb is rediculous
That was without any vmods, I just told ccc to auto tune, and took me to 700/1100, I could have gone higher on the memory but I actually clocked it down since I have no need for that high speed memory, and don't want to risk killing it.
If you are gaming at 1280 x 1024, or you are satisfied with Crysis, then you don't need to spend more. If you want more score on... say... 3DMark Vantage, do spend more. It's only $26 extra to get close to, or if you are lucky, above 4870 performance.
Well I have two of these bad boys arriving early next week so hopefully I'll have them well over 700 MHz....I'll have my MCW60 blocks on them as well. I have a LOT of copper BGA RAMsinks to go on the memory and PCB components too.
Same trend here with my xfire 4850's
Did some testing with these cards last night on 3D mark 06 , i ran the tests a few times with my cpu @ 3.8Ghz and as i clocked the cards over a certain point the scores started to get worse
Q6600@3.8Ghz
750/1050 = 20229
800/1075 = 21328*
825/1100 = 21199
850/1080 = 21103
Very odd, if thats the case then i might back down my 1.4v to 1.25 if its not getting me any faster speed.
I need to try it in some other games/test.
It's not that unusual, ATI relaxes the ram timings as you clock it higher, also you might note the cards ram needs to clock up in 25mhz jumps. They sync at intervals of 25 so keep the freqs divisable by that number.
The core is also affected by the same problem, this has been true since the 1900's AFAIK. find out where it performs best ( the factory setting is a clue.) then stick to the ratio. I would tell the number but I am going for some cups this weekend and I need all the tweaks I can to get past Gomeler.
I think this is CPU-wall
See for CPU loading during the testing: I have a core fully loaded after GPU=825MHz , and the second core why it is used at 2-7% :shakes:
It's my testing:
http://images.people.overclockers.ru/160526.gif
I have also experienced the problem mentioned but Ive been using 3dmark vantage to check. This happens exactly around 800-850mhz. I havent got any higher. Also, the memory clock speed seems to have a large effect at this point.
once again, I know what I'm doing. I don't care about crysis performance, too much hype for nothing. Great game, better gfx than I expected, but still it's only 1 game. And I game at 1920*1200, so the extra power will help. The thing is that I have an amd cpu that is holding me, that is why I'm debating whether or not to spend the money. If anything I'll get the s1 but only keep it at 700mhz for the silence and better cooling. But I still want to cool the VRM, so that's another big thing on hold.
Once again guys, I know what I'm doing, I probably have more experience than most of the people at xs anyways, I'm only new to modding, I've done my share of ocing and am building a phase change. My only difficulty is my tight budget, and that's why I have an amd cpu still and have to debate about spending $26
Yea this is true regarding the reference clock. The memory reference clock on the X1950 PRo was 27 MHz, and I think the 2900XT is as well......
If you run the system diagnostic report in Rivatuner it will give you the reference clock (I believe it's toward the bottom.)
Devious I would try keeping the memory at default speeds and OC the core independently.....if the scores still get worse I bet that the clocks are being dropped due to a driver timeout or something to that nature.
When you edit the BIOS put the OCed core frequency in all of the 3d clock fields....leaving only the 2d as the different frequency.
I mean I really doubt that the driver could time out and recover so fast that you don't even notice during the bench (let alone not cause an app crash), but it's worth a shot.
use ati tray tools ---> advanced options ---> Multi-Thread Support enabled. 2 for dual cores and 4 for quads. This should allow for better cpu scaling.

everything is ok with clocks in games, problems are 3Dmarks
bios 1.2v, no hardmods yet.
mounted thermalright SI-128 on GPU and used ramsinks on VRMs w/ 80mm fan on it. memory is naked. will post pics later in ghetto mods thread.
stock cooler max 740/1075
now 770/1150. idle 26°C load 35°C (fan@max or else load = 38°C). more voltage will be nice.
this run is @ 1125 mem
Quick question.
Would you rather run the card with aftermarket cooler (AC S1+120mm fan) with memory chips on stock or moderate OC:
- NAKED
- with ordinary mem HS (like aluminium ones that come with S1)
- investing more money for copper ones
If you can, you can list them in order of preference :) Thanks!
P.S. I'm asking, cos soon I'll be remounting my S1 to 48xx once I buy it, but if naked chips are ok, I'd rather NOT bother with sticking its mem heatsinks on mem again as it's pain in the a** LOL :) Airflow in the case is real good, plus that 120mm fan will be blowing on the card through S1..
I would never run a graphics card with naked memory if it's a high end card.....as it will have a decent amount of voltage through it, thus heat......I'm a better safe than sorry kind of guy though :p
I would suggest getting some decent copper sinks. They're comparatively inexpensive when you consider the 4870s price.
These are the best, I've used these on a few cards.
These are decent, although they don't have as good of thermal tape.
I've removed my RAM sinks several times to mod them in order to make them fit with my sound card and they always stick back (Swiftechs)
Naked mem is usually fine as long as you have airflow on it.
Heatsinks which contact both the memory and GPU often cause poor contact and create excessive heat buildup in parts that do not require a heatsink producing instability and part failures.
If you really want to know whether it is safe or not aim an infrared/laser temp probe at a memory chip while running some 3D. Over 50c i'd add some sinks.
OK, since I don't have temp probe, I will probably stick those alu-heatsinks that come with S1 for now..
Unfortunately, I can't find copper mem HS in local stores, at least for now.. :(
Thanks, both of you!

anyone having this issue. I flashed my card in XP to 720/1100 with the extra volts. Works fine. Score spits out around 14K in 06 with a Dual Core which is fine. Anyways I went to flash my card in Vista 32bit with winflash. Now I have a stutter like with something is not getting enough voltage. No artifacts. What do you guys think? Its not temps, but I think it has to do with Vista and trying to flash the card. I am gonna re-load XP and flash the card and then move back to Vista.
Edit**
To add I tried flashing in Dos Via atiflash and I get an error every time about SiI1930 something. Here is the error after using this command
atiflash -f -p -0 bios.bin
(Picture is not mine, but exact same error)

I have done the 1.263V BIOS mod, now running my 4850 @ 725/2100MHz!
Funny thing is, i have flashed this card several times, trying different settings, worked out fine, i was using XP!
Now i have Vista, and when I did the final flash with the final settings, after flashing screen have gone black, no response from computer, and one of the RED leds on the back of the card (there r 2 of them, at start up they flash up both) was on...
OMG, i was like, killed my card... so I pushed reset switch... pc turned of and on, screen came back, running nice and smooth! :)
Somebody wants to know quad:4ghz and 900core on 4850 so this is the answer
vgpu:1.48
vddr:2.05

google.com ??
It clearly states that Crossfire is disabled. Like an inch away from your question.
Nice score.
mine went wrong wont even loa into windows, i saved the original bios on my flash drive anyway i can fix this?
just want to ask how do you guys install the accelero s1 rev2 on hd4850? do you install the voltage regulator heatsink or just the ramsink?
thanks :)
does pencil mod could kill the card? what pencil to use?
thanks :)
Catalyst 8.7 is working for bios moded cards?? I had problems before with 8.7beta, só i did not risk installing 8.7 yet.
yes it is working
well emm.... still no soft-ways to change clock's above 700? Science I am 64-bit user i would have to use floppy-drive each time i would like to change clocks...
a new ATT is going to be work in progress
Hi all
Got i small problem.
I got 2 sapphire radeon 4850 card.
I flashed them today with the same bios.
That I would like to do is to get the powerplay to work with 160/500 in 2d and 625/993 in 3d
And some ajustments on the fan speed.
My first card is god, and it is working nice..
http://www.kiptanoi.se/kort2_.gif
But I cant get my second card to work the sama way, my fanspeed is good, but my 2d/3d does not work with it.
http://www.kiptanoi.se/kort1_.gif
What is the problem?
And do anyone have a bios to give med that is working with 2d/3d that way?
I dont want to overclock it now, just want the 2d/3d to work like I wrote.. 150/500 in 2d and 625/993 in 3d.
The fan speed I can make on my own. Thanks.
My card is a Sapphire HD 4850.
And hey.... my 2d/3d with my good working card nr1 is NOT working when I put it in a other computer... now its back to normal/original in 2d (500/750)
Wth is this?
Or what is the problem? =)
Do I need to change something else but the clock1 in RBE_112 to get the 2d/3d to work?
And I got ATI Overdrive off.
Is that right?
I have try this out, and I can not get the 2d/3d to work unless I enable ATI Overdrive.
How in the world do u have ur bios using 2d/3d without using ATI Overdrive?
Is that possible?
Then please post this settings for me or post ur bios.... someone, anybody.
I use a Sapphire card (4850)
I need help please. When I flash my bios to 770/1125 it shows up in gpu-z under the sensor tab as 770/1100, but under the graphics tab as 770/1125. I also am using the AMD GPU tool, its the same problem. I will set the gpu to 770 and the ram to 1125, but only the gpu is getting the overclock. Any idea what is going on, I would really like to see what the ram will overclock to. :)
What clocks do you want? Here is a Sapphire BIOS modified to run 160/500 2d, 500/700 UVD, and 750/1150 for 3d with 1.2V set in BIOS......however on my card it reads 1.17V using a digital multimeter....haven't figured out why yet.
I'll be hard modding soon so I guess it doesn't matter.....though I would like have the max voltage I can....
I have Sapphire HD4850 as well, and under load it changes from 1.098v ~1.10v (tested with Crysis GPU bench). Memory voltage was 2.0v
People, just wanted to say I gave up from voltmodding 4850 cos of possible problems with PSU as some members warned me earlier. Instead, I've invested money that would be going for 4850+new PSU into new 4870, and it works fine with my chieftec 450W, even when both GPU and CPU are overclocked (3.2GHz CPU and 780/1090 GPU/mem). So just wanted to give heads up if anyone else is wandering about their PSUs... maybe it's not good enough for voltmoding to 1.5V and 1GHz, but it's probably just fine even for 800+ non-voltmoded 4870..
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts and help everyone, I'm happy now :)
Thanks Guys, after getting a crappie clocker on my Sapphire 4850 most stable was 680/1150 now after a flash to increas voltage i am happily at 720/1150 :D
what do you guys put for voltage, 1.263v or 1.400v ????
for maximum voltage for GPU in 3D in bios must stay 1.158 for 3D. I tested it on 2 sapphire 4850 - get 1.21V for GPU. If Vgpu>1.158 in bios - run OCP and core voltage kick on 1.1V.
without bios editing:
If CCC installing, run windows task manager and determinate proces CCC.exe, open c:\Documents and Settings\<User NAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles.xml and edit <Property name="Want_2" value="1158" />, save it and run CCC - core voltage 1.21V so
1.263v in bios will get you the max available to your card without a hard mod. For me I run .94v set in bios for 2d clocks, which gets me 1.10v actual with mods installed and I'm currently testing at 1.3v for 850mhz, these cards seem to be getting stronger as time goes on. It used to take me 1.5v for 900mhz but I've been stable with 1.45v for the past few days.
The ram on these 2 cards is crazy! I can run 1188mhz on default voltage so far on both cards.
Have you guys tried high AA settings after overclocking? Using AA in certain games really kills stability with my 4850. When playing GRID with highest AA setting I have to lower my clocks from 700/1125 to 645/1025 compared to not using AA. Maybe it's the way these cards do AA, I read something about it stressing unused parts of the GPU and not the memory.
Anyone experiencing similar problems?
Hello good people!
Sorry for n00b question, but... Is VRM cooling absolutely essential? I ask that because I recently swapped my 4850's stock cooler with a ZEROtherm GX-820 overclocker's edition - I know it's nothing really special, but it was a good deal. The package didn't include VRM/capacitor heatsinks so I ordered these:
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/pro...olers/zt-zh100
Which happen to be out of stock at the moment. I still did go ahead and installed the regular RAM heatsinks and cooler, but I left the VRM's naked.
I'm with MSI's modded BIOS (max vGPU possible through BIOS) at 715/2200Mhz and I'm getting some crashes after gaming for a while... ATITool tests ok, artifact free, 3DMark Vantage also runs smooth even at 720/2200Mhz.
Maybe its the VRMs that really need some heatsinks, what do you guys think?
EDIT: As for temperatures, I got 48 ~ 50C idle with the fan at minimum RPM, and 68 ~ 70 load with ATITool. With max. fan RPM I get 43 ~ 44 idle and 60 ~ 62C load. I'm also running the card with latest 8.7 Catalyst drivers. Can it be the drivers? Last week, with the stock cooler and DNA 8.6 drivers the same game didn't gave me problems... I'm thinking here: either it's the VRMs getting too hot or these 8.7 drivers messed up something... Also, Crysis started refusing to load (MSVCR80.DLL error)... I dunno what's wrong here...
subscribed.
project for tonight.
So is anyone getting driver resets while in 2d mode? I edited my BIOS just like the MSI one for 160/500/750 and it's crash every so often while watching Youtube, etc. I have Dreamscene running too.....
RBE v1.13 is out now!
It has not many, but powerful new features.
From the changelog:
v1.13
- Added the checksum calculation method WinFlash uses because for some files, the checksums differ. See built-in-FAQ for more on this.
- Improved checksum balancing algorithm to capture this. This is a completely new method, so there might be some minor bugs, but it is guaranteed to not corrupt any file. Notify me on any strange behaviour.
- Added one-click update functionality for some 48x0 cards which corrects a well known "spin-up bug" and improves powerplay (power saving functionality).
- Added method for overdrive limit increasing. Still experimental, read built-in help text before using this. Power users only!
- Fixed bug with not properly displayed overdrive limits.
Have fun and please give me some feedback! :)
nice gift :D just started playying with bios of my new 4850 today (after purchasing and modding to watercooling yesterday ;) )
Thanks Baggz! :D I'll have a look at it right away :D
EDIT: Nice features, I thought I misunderstood something but indeed - you get lower voltages (like in that BIOS version .029335 dated 06/17/08 11:20) and unlocked Overdrive (to 990/1200 like in Diamond XOC BIOS) as two killer features.
I haven't flashed yet, I'll first have to prepare a bit in case of a disaster, since you did give us multiple warnings :D But I have noticed a potential bug. If I take my original BIOS (Club3d, reference 4870 card), and unlock overdrive, save it as a new bios, and than reload that new BIOS, it again shows same (original) clocks, and clock limits (meaning 750/900, 790/1100). Could this be a bug that's related to non-US keyboards like the one a month ago? On the other hand, lower 2D voltages do get remembered, and limits are correctly read from bios files as it seems..
What else.. umm.. oh yeah, that "spinup bug", what's that? :D Haven't heared about it yet..
EDIT: Bug existst even if all regional options are English/US :(
i think it changes the bios to the xoc-feature. you may then open that modded bios and apply clocks and save again..
i'm already playing around with these things, no-hash (option2) does not work on my card (msi 4850), it is not recognized after flash by the driver, so far so good, but that remains after reinstalling the driver.
hash does not work if the one-click bios update is enabled at the same time, so right now i try hash only and see how that works..
btw, the us/uk keyboard bug still exists or not? i havnt had that much luck by now with changing voltages..
edit: hash does not work also, i'm stuck at 700mhz limit by now..
edit: it worked with driver 8.7 instead of 8.8beta :D
dont know if the hash option works.. but i|m happy with none hash whatsoever :D
very very nice BAGZZlash.. congratulation to the great work..
but.. voltage change does not work on my card..
mmh will try further..
ok, with gurus bios voltage works.. why not with mine?? try to mod gurus bios to be freely adjustable in ccc now.. i hope voltage information does not get lost..
jep but thats taking me to 740/1100 without further changes (watercooled). not to complain about it.
so this is teh "secret" behind gurus modded bios, another software? interestingly, i cannot change the clocks via ccc when gurus modded bios is applied.. with my rbe-modded biosses it works..
but i understood guru modded his bios with rbe as well.. well, earlier version..
perhaps the keyboard bug is hindering me although bagzzlash said it should be abandoned...
ok just wanted to report that now voltage is working in bios. dont know what was the cause, but it definitely works now with german keyboard settings as well and rbe 1.13.
but it seems that i cannot use ccc clocking as soon as i set voltages for the high 3d performance p-states.. clocks will just jump back to bios values..
ok now did pencil mod to a light 1,2v and set idle volts to 0.9 and get this (still without ram-cooling):
woot. nvm
perhaps you can make one yourself? does work good with rbe 1.13
K, i'm at 780/1000 for now with a pencil mod and bios flash. What are some good, cheap mem heatsinks that I can get for a 4850 + S1 because although I'm not OC'ing my memory just yet, the temps make me uncomfortable atm. Everything else temp wise is fine.35c's idle 45c-48c's load or something like that so far.
i ordered the xilence ram heat sinks...
@ BAGZZlash: unfortunately, the modded biosses do not work with cat 8.8. That is, the overclocking limit does not apply when using the hash method, and with the no hash method the card isn't recognized correctly... Any fix in sight yet??
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/1383/bioslr2.th.jpg
working bios-template for the cat 8.8.
important: no voltages in the last field. otherwise it will black-screen during bootup.
voltage regulation works this way, as well as bios-controlled powerplay...
this is with light pencil, so 3d-clocks will have to be adjusted to your highest achievable clocks...
