PanMaster take a good photo strait to the Nexsem Chip i know where the FB pin is but i cant see the card in this angle
take a better pic from this side
Whats the FB? Which part needs shading in?
Heres a quality picture taken while the card was still in the PC:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~zen1...ge/nexsem1.JPG
I've found this, its an x1950 but its the same Nexsem 2415 chip
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...nexsemvmod.jpg
Thank you for your advice
the FB Pin is the Feedback it controls the Vcore on your card the pic is correct this is the Fb pin so now you have to find the resistor that is connected with the Fb pin on your 3850 for start and then i will tell you what to do ;)
just take a multimeter and see witch resistor measures 0Ωhms with the FB pin
post a good pic of your card it will help us a lot :)
ok try measuring those resistor and see witch one shows 0Ωhms with the FB
if you cant put you multimeter prob on the FB pin because the are tiny you can put it on the capacitor that is connected to the FB see the trace line in the image that leaves the FB pin and goes on the tiny brown smd capacitor
Can somebody show me where i can do pencil mod on my HIS 3850 512mb IceQ TurboX:

Thx friends :)
are you fully alright man?? i dont have cash to buy another card dude uhuauhuah
Have anybody got meassure and voltage point to Gigabyte HD3850 256MB ? (Red PCB)
hey, no problem, i completely understand.:yepp:
the thing about pencil mods is that if your card blows up, erase the mod and rma it! while some may call this irresponsible or unethical, i believe that since we paid for it we should be able to rma it. the big manufacturers have money to replace it, we don't.
Can you show me vgpu measure points too?? i did the pencil mod and seems like didn't have sucess...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3850_IceQ3.jpg
make sure the pencil lead took. did the resistance of R1222 drop?
vgpu is on 1.28v?? what i have to do??
Damn!..i shade that again and no has effect on voltage..:mad
where can i do this new mod in my vga??
http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?i...870pmodsl4.png
thx!
I used 100k ohm set to 90k ohm and my card is burned...Do I have to use 500k ohm and what is resistance for let's say 1.5v?
HAHA i am very very happy guys..pencil mod done! now i am testing..later i put my result :D:D:D:D..THANK YOU Random Murderer you are the BEST! :D
You must have done the mod wrong mine 3870 can handle over 1.9v without burning and i am using 100kohms
Please somebody show me where i have to shader for vmem pencil mod too?? thx guys :D
If u read the hole thread u will find it
Hey guys..somebody knows what is that "on/ke" key on top of the HIS HD3850 512mb IceQ TurboX????thx..i have searched and didn't find anything..

NTSC/PAL switch
Finaly I got it.
I voltmoded my PowerColor HD3850 512 PCS and applied a "little" bump to 1.38V VCore. I changed the bios to the HIS HD3850 ICE3 (ver 071).
I also changed the "two wire" Zerotherm by an original "3 wire" Zerothem 810.
Now I got my HD3850@864Mhz Core and 1080 MEM. (about 30% core OC). 45° idle and 65° full load.
With my P5B Deluxe, e6600@3.6Ghz I'm near the 12500 points in 3DMark06 (12247). I'm Happy....:D
At 100kohm it is about 1.38vgpu
You must have done something wrong
Got Gigabyte HD3850 to mod- it has non-reference pcb with Nexsen PWM controllers on it.
Card has Zalman cooler and blue pcb, but I think same mods can be used for other cards with same PWM chip.
Vgu mods- I measured 10K resistance between GND and FB pin.
This is without mods!
Red line is connected to FB pin and any point of it can be used for "fooling" feedback voltage to chip.
http://www.oc.pri.ee/vmods/Gigabyte_...a3850_Vgpu.jpg
Vmem mods- same story.
http://www.oc.pri.ee/vmods/Gigabyte_...a3850_Vmem.jpg
Actual mods on extra pcb:
http://www.oc.pri.ee/vmods/Gigabyte_..._3850_mods.jpg
and schematic diagram:
http://www.oc.pri.ee/vmods/Gigabyte_...ga_3850_sh.PNG
Voltage monitoring poins are knows already I think.
Mods working fine, Vgpu is limited at ca.1,75V with extra resistance on Vgpu, if you need more, use resistor with lower resistance.
I am that lucky guy who got this mod on my Gigabyte HD 3850 512mb card. :D
Right now 860mhz on core is max what i get out with this "locked" bios. Without that mod and 1,256 v i got only 805 mhz max stable under benching. Memory is Hynix 1.4ns and right now i could get stable bench clocks with RTuner 1044mhz with stock vmem.
3DMark06 skore is 13568
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=5461767
Not bad
Now in need of a good bios mod. So can go for 1000mhz.
And about temps. I have default Zalman cu700, bench temps i saw in load with RT monitoring were 81C. But those were with very high vcore, wich i just put on, knowing that those will be enough to pass with 860 core speed. Now try to lower them to optimize.
Thanks Jaan!
could someone clarify what is that buzzing noise coming from video card when clock is big or framerates are high.
and is that dangerous if i can hear it almost all the time?
well its producing that sound even with default clock and current (under load).
but now its pretty much constant when playing. how is one supposed to fix it?
Hynix mems have 1.834V by default. How much voltage could it handle and what do you guys think would be normal to run for 24/7.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...1&d=1203732548
The third resistor down is connected to the FB pin.
FB pin to ground is 5.72k
Resistance of the actual resistor is 3.64k
Jimbo Mahoney try to shade with a pencil a bit the third resistor and see if the core can handle more Mhz if so then use a 100K Trim pot 25 turns from the FB to ground it souled work
raibemunn 2,2V souled be fine for DDR3 Mems ;)
Random Murderer I saw you posted a pic of the blue pcb. I have HIS 3870 which uses blue and I have done the pencil mod, but I want to hard mod. Should I just add 100k trimmer to the pencil mod spot here or is there a better place?
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/3573/img03933aq0.jpg
Here u go.
Ok will do, thanks. I can use the ground to next to the VGPU read pt ya?
This works to?
yes but it is way harder to solder there than the other spot
Which other spot are you referring to?
My card: http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/hd3870/hd3870_13_1.jpg
Wanted to solder tomorrow morning. I don't know, if there is any other spot to solder...
Any of the green spots(they are all connected by a trace that i highlighted in green)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...mg03933aq0.jpg
Random Murderer, do You know any other spot to solder on my Giga's 3870? I have card here right now and DMM too, if it helps...
Very good, thank u sirs, will mod this weekend.
Cleaned up the pic for other's use. Thanks guys.

Random Murderer, this is the best, I could take week ago:
http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/hd3870/hd3870_13.jpg
your spots are the same.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../hd3870_13.jpg
on a side note, if you want to use a different point, grab your dmm and set it to resistance. put one probe on one of those points, and use the other to touch other points and read the resistance. whenever you find a point that has 0Ω resistance, BINGO! you can use that point.
Yes, I already used that method ;)
I find 2 spots also:
http://ceemic.pri.ee/hardware/hd3870/hd3870_13_2.jpg
Thanks:up:

Can somebody show me where i have to pencil for vmem in HIS HD3850 IceQ TurboX???
Clint, it has been pretty "noisy" card since I bought it. Higher FPS=louder "squeeling":shakes:
for the mod here for the 3870 refrence
http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?i...870pmodsl4.png
is there a better mod, and what one is better as well as what values would be good for 1.45V for gpu vcore
also is there a pencil vdimm mod, im kinda lost and the 3870 and 3850 and reference and not in the same thread are making this hard to follow
Aircooling powwa: http://ceemic.pri.ee/45nm/81153.jpg
Outside temp -1C; Vgpu=1,76V :ROTF:
At the same clock on 3D2003, it crashed several times during Nature:(
Next stop: 1,80V+DICE:D
Very nice ceemic, 1.8v is alot tho..
My HD3870 with 5c cold water dident get over 60c with over 1.9v vgpu
Max temp@3D2006 was 30C, @3D2003 it was 28C:D
i need some info from some of you 3870/3850 owners....
the location in green i need cap info and of the blue ones as well. much appreciated. thanks. :p:

820uF 2.5v all 4 of them.

www.mouser.com have them
as always riska to the rescue!!! thanks allot brother.. :D ;) :yepp:
Thanks. It seems to work, although I need to verify it.
100k pot gives ~1.41 volts. Strangely, the default voltage for my 3850 seems to be 1.32v, the same as a 3870. Anyone else have this?
I've not yet tested clocking, as I b0orked the BIOS of my mobo and am awaiting a replacement BIOS chip.
I am going to attempt the Pencil mod for both vgpu and vdimm however,
I have the antec 900 case with all fan slots going at 120CFM.
Will the huge air flow blow off the pencil shading?
Is there OCP mod required for these cards? I did vmod and it works fine but when I raise voltage to say 1.5v I cant run 3dmark even at stock clocks. It goes black screen. 1.4ish volts works fine.
Was cooling with chilled water and temps were below 30C so I doubt that is the issue. Any ideas? Here is the mod:
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/2322/img04581kb6.jpg
Any of you have HIS card that can confirm working vgpu mod without ocp mod? I could do shams ocp mod here but I dont want to do it if unnecessary.
http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/8382/21365711nf6.jpg
1,90V should work fine without OCP. 1,9+V needs at least DICE. I have benched w/ 1,84V w/ Volcano12 in -4C ambient:D (I turned to 1,87V, but lowered "just in case" to 1,84V before benchmarking...)
Lol Im not planning on running 1.9v anytime soon. My problem is something is happening when I inc voltage to 1.5V even. Black screen the second the 1st test in 3dm06 begins even at stock clocks. Spent like 6 hours troubleshooting last night, and will continue today after work. Mod seems to be working fine, but now that I think of it the one thing I did do before testing was install the new 8.3 CCC. Maybe Ill roll back just to eliminate driver issue as cause.
well feel around the card for hot spots. my mosfets get raggggging hot once i start going over 1.5v. i had to sink em and i still cant touch the heatsinks with my finger. :D  GL
Yeah I was just keeping an eye on the ram temps because I just have a 120mm on it and no sinc but it wasnt too bad. Card makes a hell of alot of noise when its loaded tho lol.
Sorry for the n00b question but I've read in the past that a 2b pencil is what should be used for modding.
However, one of the main successors in this thread has used a 3B pencil.
I have a 2b, a 4b and a 8b pencil.
Which one should i use, should i go out and buy a 3B pencil?
THANKS :D
The softer the pencil the easier to apply.
I use 4B, but I guess 8B is even softer due to the higher number.
There is also differences in how the graphite is applied.
Some stroke it with very small pressure, leaving a lot of graphite on there (gaining very low resistance) but also very easy to get blown off and stuck on other places (not good).
Some stroke it with more pressure and have to work harder to get the same low resistance, but it will not get blown away so easily.
In any case you should "seal" it with tape or nail coating to prevent it from get blown off.
As you might see, if using the "low pressure" method you will get a lot washed off when using nail coating.
Nail coating is that stuff women put on top of the red color to make their nails look all shiny and all...:D
I hope this cleared up some.
ok so i just bricked my gecube 3850 by setting vcore to 1.42v :(
it worked ok for a while, but then it started artefacting so I removed the mod, then it started artefacting at stock, and now it even artefacts at 300mhz...
funny thing is though, on one occasion it seemed to work fine at stock clocks after all these problems, even getting through 20 minutes atitool artefact testing and a crysis benchmark at high settings with 4xaa. Leads me to believe it may be reversible damage, but who knows... :S
remember kids, all mods are done at your own risk :D
I'm having some problems with my 3870. I was benching 985/2700 with vgpu mod and after a reboot I got no signal on my monitor.
I moved it to the second PCIX slot, plugged in a 6200TC in the first PCIX slot and it was detected in Windows. Gpuz detected the 3870 fine, the only strange issue was that the GPU load was at 99%.
The question is what's the problem? Video card 'almost dead'? :D
Any chance to be fixed somehow?
can i use hot glue to fix the graphite??
Yes but clear tape is eayser
I PM'd Eldonko this but I figured everyone might be interested...
About your black screen problem with 1.5v on your HIS card. I've got a GeCube O.C. Edition card which suffers the same problem ONLY when I use a HIS bios.
If I use the GeCube bios, or the Sapphire Bios I can push 1.5v+ quite happily...
Any thoughts anyone? I've tested this quite a bit and it's definitely the HIS bios that prevents 1.5v...
Very interesting, I think switching the BIOS is the only thing I didnt try. I was told that OCP cant be in a BIOS and it clocked well at stock volts so I didnt try any diff ones. Thanks for the heads up on that, will give a try.
Ok so to serve as a warning to others (story of my life lol) I think my card is permanently damaged.
I pencil shaded my 512mb gecube 3850 from 1.26v to ~1.42v and everything was fine for a couple of weeks until it started artefacting. I removed the mod but it just kept getting worse. Now I can't even boot into Windows without having a 80mm case fan sitting on top of the card. Presumably the voltage regulator had its lunch :(
Works fine now, but can't resell it or RMA it, and I'm hesistant to even overclock it past factory settings (725mhz core). I have a couple of 3870's on the way so maybe I'll just go for gold and see what fun 1.5v gives :D
Hehe what do you know, I think my 3850 also has OCP /OVP (OVP I think).
It works fine at 1.5v but as soon as it reaches 1.55v, it drops to 0v and the screen goes black.
My card is a Triplex 3850 512MB using a Nexsem 2415:
http://www.nexsem.com/pdfs/2415DS.pdf
http://www.lenstheory.com/Triplex_3850_VGPU.JPG
The blue circled resistor is connected to pin 8 (OCP) of the 2415. If I remove this resistor, I'm assuming it will remove the OCP? Looking at the section in the PDF, it seems increasing the resistance of this resistor will increase the OCP point, so removing it will do the trick?
EDIT - Removing this resistor did nothing at all. Card is fine :) and OCP still functions :(
Anybody have the pictures for the 3870 OCP mod ?
Found it a bith further up :D
Put the card back in yesterday to try this and it is just black screen when I boot. :(
What is this OCP??
Dead card or bad flash? I've found ATiWinFlash to brick my 3870 several times, had to boot with an x300 and the 3870 in the other PCIE slot and force flash it again...
Protection against overvolting. Hence we disable it and overvolt anyway.
Dead card. Worked fine last time I ran it but when I put it back in to flash a BIOS it gives no video.
