Thanks, AMDfreak. The flash to B06 went alright, however, my lame problem still persists. CPUz still says I'm using a x6 multiplier and the voltage is still around 1.192V. Also, uGuru is still not picking up my bus speed. Weird. Everything seems to be running smoothly though, haven't run all my benchmarks but vista 64 goes from post to desktop crazy fast! I guess I'm off to research the problem *shakes fist defiantly at computer*.

well disabling c1e and eist took care of the multiplier issue (thanks, heidfirst!). guru reads around 1.3V and cpuz about 1.19V. uguru still shows 0 clock speed... i must just be using virtual clocks... and writing virtual posts in this forum. that means you are all figments of my imagination!
together or separate cpuz and guru get the same readings. I'll try running some other monitors and see what they say!

Just bought this motherboard with a QX9650. It's kinda good !
But with latest BIOS 12b6 (and olders too), multiplicator is always set to 9 ! Any clue with this ? I don't want to stay at 445*9 :)
I'll just have to repeat myself again, I guess - CPU-Z does NOT usually show accurate Vcore on any Abit Motherboard (because of µguru). So far I had the IN9-32X Max, the AW9D-Max, AB9 QuadGT and now the IX38 QuadGT and never did it show the correct Vcore regardless of the version!Quote:

However, you can always trust CPU-Z in terms of FSB/Multiplier.
If you have EIST/C1E enabled, it's perfectly normal to have a 6x multiplier displayed in windows idle. Just keep CPU-Z open and start prime, you'll see how the clocks change ;)
About guru not showing FSB, I had the same problem at first. I had to do a complete uninstall (NOT repairinstall) and reinstall the latest version of guru again, now it works perfectly.
Just throw my Commando away and switch to this board. It's my 2nd day with it now. :D
This mobo gave me BSOD at the first time I got into Windows on default settings. I just kinda shock about it. But today the problem seems gone.
I think it may be caused by this board that set my Q6600 FSB a little bit higher at 272, so the RAM is also OCed a little too. Also now I'm using BIOS 12B06 which seems working better. And one more thing, I tried it in Windows that still have previous board driver installed, so it may be driver's conflict. :)
However, I didn't see any problem with this board, such as keyboard freezing or C1 boot error that other members suffer here.
But this board still have some minor problems: :(
1. DDR voltage and DDR VTT offset are way too high. These make my board "screaming" all the time, so I must set the "beep" alarm to OFF.
2. When I powered on the PC, it always sound a long beep once and the post code stay a bit longer at C1. May be this board was a little slow at detecting my RAM and think that my RAM was error for a while everytime it was booting. And this problem didn't occured when I reboot/ reset my PC. How to fix it then?
Hearing such sound everytime booting up my PC is a little annoying for me.
3. And about that buggy divider 1:1.25, I haven't tried it yet.
Anyhow, I'm still running on the default setting right now. And getting prepared to OC at least to 3.0 Ghz. Any ideas how to start that?
My Q6600 is L724A and VID is 1,2875v with TRUX120.
I have tested that this processor can running at 3.0 Ghz with vcore only at 1,20v full load.
So the questions remain now are vMCH and vFSB, i think... How much "juice" I have to set on vMCH and vFSB to get it running fine with 9 X 333 FSB on this board? Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.
More over, how about the settings to run at 3,6 Ghz? What vMCH and vFSB setting should I take then?

3. It's not buggy as long as you don't push it too far. You can easily run mem@1000 with the 4:5 divider, it just gets unstable over 1100 or something ;)
Recommended settings for your quad@3Ghz:
- Set Vcore according to your CPU's needs
- Set Memory Divider to 1:1.25
- Set memory Voltage to 2V
- Set FSB to 333
- Leave all the other voltages at stock - worked for me with 3 different boards/Q6600's ;)

For 3.6 Ghz I'm using VTT 1,3V - MCH 1,35V - ICH 1,20V
Just don't expect to be running 3,6 stable out of the box on air, not all CPUs can do it and also the mobo might need some fine-tuning as well.

I'm using a pair of Crucial Lanfest Limited Edition 2 GB right now. When I set everything to auto (timing, voltage, etc), it start with 1.94v as detected by uGuru. Everest read it higher at 1.96v. I know this voltage is normal. But, this is not what I mean.Quote:

See the red line? The DDR2 and DDR2 VTT limit offset are way to ridiculous. I believe that this is caused by the erronous BIOS, right? I then have no option except to set OFF the BIOS warning for DDR2 and DDR2 VTT voltages. :shrug:
About the vcore for my Q6600, on my previous Commando, I set it to 1.275v in BIOS, and it was idling at 1.24v. When I running Prime95, it dropped to 1.20v only! A huge vdroop, wasn't it? But, everything was running normal at that setting. If I dropped the vcore even just one step, say... to 1.2625, the full load vcore would drop below 1.20v, at 1.18v, and I wouldn't survive the Prime95 test even for 3 minutes. :D
And oh, before I forget, I would like to thank you for your great review there. I was googling to find the pros and cons of this board back then and I found Clunk's review alongside with yours. :up:

I also own this motherboard. Went from IP35 Pro - so the change isn't major.
But I'm experiencing some issues; sometimes the system hangs at boot and will not post, but it's totally random. Additionally the board can't seem to set the timmings ( especially Tras) of my Ballistix 8500 properly - eventhough I adjust them manually.
I've tried the latest beta BIOS B06, but it does not seem to fix the problems.
So my question is, and the whole point of this message:) , when is Abit going to realease an official BIOS? Anybody know?

@humble DDR2 & VTT are only redline because the limits are wrong. Change them in bios or in guru, Reinstall guru or check version.
It's difficult to know what a q6600 needs on a commando, i'd ditched the board in favour of a p5k b4 i got ny q6600 then 9x400
vcore = 1.375v which is the lowest i giot, but was amongst the best in the oc databases.
I'd use jcools1st then if that's stable & you feell like going on try 3.6k.Quote:

I also agree that there are issues that can't seem to be explained, eg. I'm currently running two nearly indentical rigs side by side, both equipped with IX38 Bios B12.06, Q6600@3Ghz (customer's) and Q6600@3,6 (mine :D ), both running 4GB D9GMH, both with 8800 Vid Cards. Only differences are water for me, IFX-14 for the customer and Enermax Liberty 500 <-> Corsair HX520.
So these setups are as similar as it gets - then WHY does the 3Ghz machine show ridiculously low CPU and System temp? It shows about 12C and then freezes it there, making it impossible for me to regulate Fan speed after CPU temp :/

I also had to RMA one IX38 because the top PCIe x16 wasn't working - tried 3 GFX cards and the mobo kept showing "90" - putting the cards into the lower PCIe "solved" the problem :rolleyes:
Anyone ever seen a defective PCIe x16 before on a brand-new motherboard? I certainly haven't...
Finally got a chance to do some more testing. My new video card (8800GTS 512) solves the boot problems with the top 16x slot, perhaps it was just an issue with the PCI-e 1.0 cards I had to test with before.
I also replaced all the push-pins with nylon bolts so those should all have better contact than before.
My new problem:
I'm trying to run my Q6600 at 400x6 to make sure I can handle the 400FSB. (This is an attempt to follow AnandTech's quad OC'ing article.) Memory is running at 1:1 for 800 MHz, mem timing & voltages are set to spec. I can run memtest all night but I BSOD & restart within seconds of starting Prime95. No amount of MCH or DDR2 voltage will get it stable, and I tried some absurd levels (1.6 and 2.25). Lower FSB speeds (333 and 366) with ratios resulting in at or near 800MHz memory speeds prime fine.
Any other voltages I should be looking at to successfully run 400MHz? From what I see here 400 shouldn't be difficult for this board & 400 is all I'm really asking for (since I'll end up with either 3.2 or 3.6 GHz, which is more than sufficient for my needs).

Some news on the water-front: A user named tommi from the German hardwareluxx forums has a solution for a complete watercooling of the mobo, chek it out here
It's a Mips block on PWM, D-Tek Fuzion AM2 modified (drilled some new holes) on the NB and Swiftech MCW30 on the SB. Only problem is that it's probably not CF compatible because of the Swiftech, but IMO a smaller passive cooler is enough for the SB anyways. It's just the NB that gehts so darn hot :rolleyes:

He just used the AMD AM2 mounting for the Fuzion and drilled some new holes into it, like I said. Simple enough :)
Exact translation for the passage above would be:
"CPU and NB coolers are both D-Tek Fuzions, the one on the NB is equipped with the AM2 mounting which I modified by drilling some additional holes. Aditionally, I cut the edges to make it fit, using a flex (I honestly dunno how you people call that)

Sadly I have a very annoying problem with my IX38... it's making horrible crackling noises, just like the old QuadGT but much louder and... in idle :rolleyes:
The old one only did this under full load and only when highly OCed - funny thing is, when I put the IX38 under load it shuts up :ROTF:
I think I'm gonna have to RMA cause its really really loud (thanks to me having an ultra-silent system...)

what's nice about the DFI board is low vdroop...some say there is no vdroop but it has it...about 0.015v...DFI employs the vdroop switch in the bios...what that does is actually raise the vcore above what you set in the bios when the switch is enabled...tricky...hehehe...actually, it will droop under load...now understand this!...when droop switch is disabled, you get actual vcore equaling bios set vcore and the vcore will not droop at ALL during a wPrime 1024M bench...scratching head here...LOL
the other nice thing, you have numerous bios adjustments for DRAM...there is a huge learning curve here but it does pay off...you can get DDR-whatever to run about 200 points or more above its stated rating...that said, it is lagging behind in at least one video bench...i scored a 1000 points higher on the IP35 Pro than on this DFI board..obviously bios maturation is lagging at the moment.
the problem could be this latest bios that is no longer posted on DFI's website...apparently it was issued to allow PCIe 2.0 standards but one user posted that the bios set his VC to 1x...mine is working at 16x as you will see after posting 3d2001.
Naw... I'm using an X-Fi anyways. No, the crackling/buzzing/hissing noise comes from the board itself, namely from the PWM Aaea... dammit. And everybody was hoping they fixed this issue with the rev. 2 of these digital PWMs. I guess they didn't since it's a lot worse than it was with the old QuadGT.Quote:

I just got this board for Christmas and have been setting everything up. So far I've had a couple of headaches, but one is really irritating me.
I have my E2180 running stock (2GHZ) at 1.325v, and my memory is strapped 1:2.00 to run at DDR2-800 (stock) speeds. I am continually failing Prime95--one thread--after about an hour. I flashed 12.B06, and it hasn't seemed to have helped.
Since I am having problems with Prime95, I decided to go ahead and do some memtest86+ testing. I ran both sticks of ram with memtest86+ for four passes and no errors were found. Later, I ran the test again and found 1 error on a third pass, so I ran each stick individually in the same slot (slot 1), and they each passed four passes. All of this was done on the shipped BIOS, and I have not run memtest86+ yet with 12.B06.
My question is: since each stick of RAM passed individually, is it some sort of memory controller issue or what? Also, I know some people run memtest86+ all night or whatever, but I figure in four passes you have what you have, is this wrong?
My memory: Patriot 2 x 2GB PDC24G6400ELK. I have set all of the timings manually (5-5-5-12 [stock]), and have the voltage set to 2.0v--at which they are rated.
I am running a fresh install of XP Pro 32-bit, my CPU temps are around 30-32*C, and I have C1E and EIST disabled. I am testing with Super PI right now, so far so good.
The rest of my rig in sig. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I've had little time to test the past few days between a nasty cold, my 6-month old, visiting family, etc. For me, lower multis are still a no go with C1E disabled. No amount of voltage will get me anything better than a BSOD at Vista startup @450 FSB. 1:1.25 also is not stable at all, so I've settled for 9x412 1:1.20.
Started to OC my 1950xtx and was running 700MHz core stable for a day when I started to get that electronic buzzing and sudden instability in video apps. :doh: Oh well, what better excuse to have for getting an HD 3870?:shrug: After catching up on the thread though I'm really hoping the noise isn't actually from the IX38 PWM...
Yeah, it just started suddenly, there's still no reason to me as to why these noises didn't appear earlier... haven't even changed my OC.
I hope your card is all right, I had to bury my X1900XTX earlier this year... just died on me while surfing (40 C Core max so no overheating..)
Made me go for Nvidia - so far I didn't regret it. Just played Crysis on my new 24" in 1920x1200 with everything set to high (DX9 though) - runs unbelievably smooth :)
Hey Guys, I wanted to share my cooling method for IX38.
For Northbridge, I use an Apogee GT with AM2-fix cut-off and drilled
For Mosfets, watercool #7 block is perfect for 30€
For Southbridge, MCW30 is fine.

I've crunched the mosfets cause I've mounted my waterblock on AS instead of thermal pad. Some CMS have made a shortcut, dead mobo :(
So, since i'm waiting for a replacement one, i'm gonna make a new fix for ApogeeGT with 5mm plexy.
Always stick to the thermal pad when it comes to mosfets (even if it hurts) you learned that now :(

Running my Q6600 on this board now at 3.0 Ghz speed and DDR2 1000 Mhz. The voltages it needs is unbelieveable low. :up:
Vcore is default (high possibility lower voltage will works), vMCH is 1.3v and vFSB is 1.25v and vDIMM is 2.0v.
More thing to praise is that this board don't even do any double boot like most of the other Intel boards do, even when I unplugged the power cord after using it (cold booting). Very nice board indeed. :up:

Divider 2.0 even has two version, one is 2.0 only and the other is 2.0+ (with plus sign). Anybody know details about the difference between the plus and non plus version?
When I use divider 1.6+ and 2.0+, my system is locked up and can't even POST, so I have to clear CMOS. Meanwhile the other dividers are working just fine. :shrug:

I can't really understand why only core three would fail and the others still running. The Vcore should be high enough and the other settings seem to be failsafe/overkill settings.
Could Prime be the problem? I havn't seen the magnitude of this problem before; I mean the other three cores should flake out at some point, when one of the cores already failed after 1 hour and 80 minutes.

@UST: You might also wanna try to increase ICH voltage, I only use 1,32V Vcore and 1,3V VTT for 400x9 but 1,2V ICH. Supershank's 1,13V haven't been enough for me.
Well, I just put in my new HD 3870, and the problem is most definitely NOT the vid card. My PWM's are screaming even at idle right now and my next stop is Newegg's RMA site. Would anyone like to talk me out of buying a DFI board and just selling the new IX38 I get?:bsod: :explode2: :brick:

DFI's BIOS' are massive in an overwhelming way. I used to run an Athlon 4000+ on the Lanparty NF4-SLI DR Expert and it's propably one of the motherboards I've owned with highest production value - BUT unless you're an overclock master their BIOS' are gonna make you dizzy:D

In my oppinion all of my voltages are fairly high and my settings fail safe.

Sorry I can see what you are talking about. I'll try to express myself more thoroughly now...
First I tried to follow your 400*9 template, but Prime failed right away with those settings. So i bumped up my Vcore to 1.4250 and lowered the FSB Frq. to 389 from 400. With these settings, as said in my previous post, one core failed after 1 hour and 80 mins. while the other three went on with no errors for 52 hours.
Okay, back to present time. I'm advices by Supershanks and R*r to bump up my VTT and MCH, but decided to try out 9*400 again since it seem to be a sweetspot for the CPU judging from the countless OC threads here.
So I tried with a higher VTT and MCH to reach 9*400 and this is where we are now:)
With these settings 2 of the cores fail immidiately:

Another thing, how about your CPU temp? You can check them with Coretemp 0.94 (do NOT use 0.95 or it will crash your system at the very least!)
If they are too high (over 65) your CPU might also be unstable @3,6Ghz.
Mine gehts unstable at about ~69C...
Edit: The problem here is that your GTL Ref and VTT aren't corresponding any more. If you want to run 1,4V VTT you also need to increase GTL settings. See here for a detailed explanation.
I know it's a lot but hey, if you want easy plug and play overclocking, don't set your expectations that high or get a Dualie ;)

As jcoiol sdays the anandtech aarticle is for the dfi board, absolute values like the graph shown here VTT & FSB Limits won't necessarily apply to ther Abit, BUT the methodology does.
My vtt settings have been (all a minimum of 12hts prime stable)
400x9 1.33v probably overcooked
450x8 1.30v probably low to blob on
465x8 1.45v again is over the top
470x8 1.36v This is my current 24/7 seems very comfy.:)
so i think 450 & 470 are about blob on. 465 should probably be 1.34v
with ~1.30 as jcool says for 400. Throughout my gtlref has been at 68/67 but as stated you need to verify what is best for your quad.

At 1.42 Vcore my temps reach 90c +
I'm reaching a max of 70C on water, which is perfectly fine for 24/7 use. With stock PWM cooling and no airflow in the area I got close to 100C, which was still stable. Officially they are rated for 135C but anything over ~85C will shorten their lifetime considerably.

It's something i found between the gigabyte Dq6 & the Abit. would be interested to see if ny results are repeatable & therefore gives hope that we might expect a better performance bios , should the Bios engineers stumble across it and tighten settings. Alternatively it may prove my results are
