Bios used for quad g0 for most of us is 1301 or 1303, I use 1301.
As to the 8800GT SLI score, what drivers? the 169.25 beta's will probably be your best bet, as the cards are young, not many driver revisions support them yet.
How bad is the score? CPU clock? GPU clock? need alot more info to help with that score, whatever it may be :rolleyes:

I am apt to blame the drivers:
Playing Hellgate for a little bit and FPS was all over the place, from way high , to rather average.
Oh, and I was working in Maya for 5 hours, and the damn thing kept locking up on me before. Not crashing, just stops responding. Though who knows why that would be... could be the 4GB on the 680i, could be Vista, could be the 64-bit part of Vista, or could be that this is the first time I am using Maya-64-Bit, or the drivers... :shrug:
Hey guys, what is generally the voltages that have to do with max stable FSB? NB? SB? I have no idea anymore heh.
I have my Q6600 now at prime stable (all tests) 4.05Ghz 450x9, but it can go much higher, I just know it. I have hardly even touched the voltage on the CPU, so I can pretty much rule that out. Besides I still can't get past POST even on 6x multi.
I have a phasecooler on my CPU, chilling at -70 to -50'ish depending on the load and how I tune it. I think withut some serious cooling, its the pure heat that will stop many people overclocking quads. The amount of heat a Q6600 with slight overvolting makes at 4.05Ghz is CRAZY! With some math I estimate like 220watts. Don't try that with the stock cooler people, you have been warned ;)
So well, I'm having a hard time getting anything significantly past 1800, and I NEED more FSB. Can anyone help me out as to what voltages I am going to have to increasse?
Right now all mosfets, NB and SB have assistance 120mm fans, so they can handle pretty much any voltage withut any real danger I should think. Eventually they will be on high-end water.
Whats the most FSB anyone has gotten on the Striker Extreme, and does anyone know aprox the max on an A1 Evga 680i? I'm still tempted to swap to it because of that fix, especially if ti can give me more FSB headroom...

@ Stigma, Highest FSB I have had is 485 on the Striker, took alot of manipulationg all the voltages to get it.
@Natalia, Not sure about your maya problem, could you Stop the maya task or was the whole system locked up. Or when you say "stopped responding" were you refering to the awful "driver Not Responding" issue famous on SLI and Vista with Nvidia?
As to your score, 14,700 on Vista 64 with non overclocked GT and CPU @ 3.4 seems about right, especially with no tweaks etc...
I'm still thinking about pulling the Q6600 out of my Striker Extreme and putting in either an E6700 or an E6850. I'm leaning more towards the E6850.
Is a 400 FSB possible with the 6850 and Striker combo? Or do FSB walls/holes prevent 400 with a 1333 FSB processor? If 400 is do-able with a 6850, i'll more than likely just go with that. From what I'm reading, the 1305 BIOS is better for the Exx50 series processors. I've had my head in so many threads on different boards, i've confused myself.

I got 3600mhz so easily on the E6850 with 9 x 400 ( 1.32 real volts) but only thing missing was the 1066Mhz support I used to run with the E6600, anything higher than 1000mhz on the ram made it practically impossible to get the rig stable... I also got 450 FSb on the E6850 no issues there...Quote:

natalia i have ~70+ tasks running at any given time in vista64, so with a C2Q @ 3.6 with 8800GTX SLI 625/975 I score ~18000, so from what i have seen of the 8800GT with some overclcoking and such you should get a bit closer to 16-17000 in Vista64Quote:

I just dropped the E6850 in with the 1303 BIOS and 3.6 w/ 1600FSB with a 9 multi was a BREEZE.
Could someone point me to the VDROOP pencil mod for this Striker Extreme please.
I think my next direction will be to replace this 4GB (2x 2GB) set of OCZ Platium and get some of that GSKILL. At the price its hovering at now, prolley' gonna get two sets for 4GB. Seems a lot of folks are having good RAM overclocks with this board and that ram.
1305 is a POS full stop so is 1401, I run 1303 and can do upto 1900FSB and 1900mhz Memory, then its basically a brick wall.
This is by far the buggiest POS I have ever owned (ignoring other factors that are faults).
Well, I went back this morning and started playing around again, and I can agree, the 1401 with Q6600 is just as bad as 1305, I can do nothing with it.
I am back to 1303, and nothing has really changed, max stable overclock on my crappy G0 is 3.825, it does not like 3.9 or better, I believe it is a chip wall for me and not a board wall. As 450x8 is fine.
As to a higher FSB with lower multi, I am at a loss, no matter what I did today I could not pass 450+-8, I did not try anything lower than 1301 on the bios's though, time did not allow for it.
I ran WCG for the last 12 hours with valid work units being produced, so pretty much the best stability test I know, as I have had prime stable for 24 hours, and had some WCG workunits fail after just a few hours. So this is rock solid.
Just a not for those with the 2x2GB pc28000 Gskill kits, these are rough to work with, the multi's they like and do not like are all so different. This seems to be the fastest setup for them I could find. As at 450x8 with the memory cas 5 running 1000 they have a read time of 8500, though the writh time was 7900, so a trade off there, and the latency, as usual on the NVIDIA chipset is absolute garbage.

Asus makes some good boards no doubt. I will always consider them when looking for my next board. But I am really enjoying my eVGA 680i SLi. :)

Quick 06 run with above clocks, and stock GTX's, I still have not found it necessary to OC the cards, was thinking about it with crysis, but looked like it does no good, wait for the patch, and do some reading on clocking video cards, as I am very uniformed when it comes to them.

I scored 18+K @ 3.6GHz with my GTX's overclocked. I don't own the Pro version of 3DMarks06 so I will have to wait for the ORB to come back up in order to submit my results @ 4.2GHz. Nice score for stock clocks on the cards though. :)
OK, that was easy, went and grabbed rivatuner, and just cranked a few things. Not a huge diff but broke 19K, vista64 with 169.25 drivers, yeah orb is still down as well, could not submit.

I've taken so many notes that i've got yellow sticky on top of yellow sticky here on my desk. I did manage to score an E6850 that is humming along at 3.8 so far with a 425FSB.
Now to work on RAM. I know we talked about G.Skill, but i can't remember the model................someone nudge me.......

I think i have it drilled down: G.Skill PC2-8000 (5-5-5-15) @ 2.0 - 2.1 volts.
So, using this RAM with the 680i -- is it better to go with 4x 1GB sticks or 2x 2GB sticks.
Natalia is using 2x 2GB with a Quad core - how is that overclock coming?
All of my clocking after 10/15/07 has been done with those Gskill's you mentioned, they are not great overclockers but have some range with the CL.Quote:

I would advise to go with 2 x 2 surely on the 680i, as running 4 dimms can be a pain in the arse to get it stable, these rams work great...
Khaotic can you run over 1000mhz on the ram with ya E6850 ? I couldn't with mine and 1303 bios...

So, those are the only reason to have 780i as it is 680i with a third chip for the faster third lane and pci-e 2.0 support.
I am going to try and slide through another year with my current set up, and wait for nehalem for my next upgrade. We shall see if that works out for me, no games on the horizon I know of that would make me need to upgrade just yet.

Does the board revision matter for OCing? I gave up on trying to hit above 1333 (even at 1334 i can boot into windows but it locks or crashes almost right away) according to CPU-z my revision is A2 (board is 1.xx) just throwing it out there

BIOS 1305 is the flipping DEVIL.
I updated to it becuase it was said that it offered better overclocking for a 1333 FSB processor than the 1303. Well, on my particular board that is NOT true. CIP: With 1303 i can POST at 1700FSB and with 1305, it hangs right after post. I'm going to try the 1401 now and see how bad that is.

I would like to share my OC results on my Striker Board with the Q6600 GO.
I had many problems to find a stable settings, on the beginning I couldn't overclock CPU above 3.2 GHz. After while I manage to push CPU to 3.6GHz with 450FSB and lowered multiplier. I tried all the bios versions but only 1004 allow me to push the FSB that high.

You need to find all settings on the newer biosses, what worked before might require other settings, I could run my E6850 24/7 at 3600mhz with 1305 with just Vcore and RAM voltage manually set... no issues here and it went fine for benching at 4ghz... just the ram wouldn't run over 1000mhz anymore for the rest it seemed pretty fine, it just doesn't work too well with quads...Quote:

Just reveives my new board from RMA an saw a very strange thing.
My CPUVTT's voltage is always dancing between 1.34 to 1.44 even when the computer's ideling oO. And its worst when stressing system the jumps could be higher than 0.1 V oO. Don't think a Vmod exists for this.

ok so i just received my new striker after rma'ing my old one it just went bonkers and died. this new board is one with the fixed bios chip where as my old one had the removable. now i have tried every possible setting for every overclock i know worked with my QX6700 on my old board and i just cant get this thing to budge.
ive tried all the settings in this thread as well for 3.4, 3.6, 3.825. most of the time 3.6ghz posts but when it tries to load into windows it just goes to the black screen with the flashing thingy in the corner like its not detected a hard drive or windows installation.
when i restart it doesnt post at all, and when i power off and use the CLR CMOS button it doesnt do anything!! sometimes it just posts again with the previous settings or C.P.R comes into play and lowers the fsb to get it to post again the CLR CMOS button is not doing what its supposed to :down:
can anyone possible shed some light on this?

ok well the board shipped with 1305 bios so i re-flashed it to 1301, for some reason 1303 wont work as soon as it flashes, it reboots and tries to post and just freezes, but it works when i remove all of the usb connectors i have plugged in the back. the memory is specced to run at 1200 by team group but its pc6400 - 800 by default. ill have to do a few more tests and get back to you on the lcd poster.

i tried running the memory at 900 so it was 1:1 with the QDR FSB but it wouldn't post. again ill have to re-run it and check the lcd message.
the weird thing is on my old board i could run 3.6ghz with vcore at 1.55, ram at 2.2, nb at 1.55 and rest on auto and it worked fine.
Thing I noticed with my board that after 1305 flash that the ram couldn't be set as high anymore as usual (1066Mhz with 400FSB) but I had the E6850 also in it as I sold my E6600....
Too bad as we all noticed each board is different and some "magical" settings work for many but a few are left alone in the dark... thing to try is to up CPU VTT to 1.5 or even 1.55. My board needed that to reach 450FSB to get into windows though it BSOD immediately when I launched a benchmark, with lower CPU VTT it didn't even got into winblows....
Does 415FSB or even 425FSB work with ram in sync so 830Mhz or 850Mhz ? What does happen if you let the bios determine the ram speed as your ram really has loads of headroom there...
Also I checked ya ram it requires a hefty 2.35 or even 2.4 volts to operate at 1200mhz... so the ram might need a bit more voltage to be stable...
yeah the ram is quoted at 2.35-2.45 this is a new set also coz i had to rma my last ones one of the sticks died. maybe this ram has different chips and requires the extra volts ill give that a try, ive just been wary of overvolting the ram with 680i ive heard all the stories of ram dieing:down:
I always have set the value one or two lower than prescribed worked fab till now so try region 2.75 volts or such
The northbridge and dividers on these boards seem flaky, at best, when oc’ing quads. Just thought I’d share my results while on a 4Ghz quest.
Dropped in a G0 Q6600 (to replace an E6600 that was at 3.6, 400x9 / 1066 5-5-5-15 - 3:4 divider - for a YEAR) and am currently battling the dividers and a mysterious heat issue on the striker with this quad. I’ve tried my own settings and also the Linflas settings. Bios 1303.
Here’s where I’m at; the Q6600 (L737A832, VID: 1.3250 :mad: packed 10/18/07) is very solid at 3.6ghz (450x8), 1.43750v set and verified with a multimeter at 1.439v idle and 1.441v load. (Did the vdroop pencil mod.) Can run a couple of hours of prime until I get bored, no errors. Will test longer, later. 3Dmark06 passes with no problem. Temps are better than expected with the cores acting in pairs. On water, 22C & 28C idle for the 2 pairs (0&1 and 2&3), and 42C & 48C load. 18C ambient. This thing runs cooler than the lapped E6600 dual core by a couple of degrees!
Here is the problem… sometimes, SuperPi locks the computer. Hard lock, no mouse movement… and the “pulse” of the hard drive light that these 680i’s seem to have, stops. Reset needed. It can run 32M sometimes, and other times, lock at 4M. Seemed pretty random at first, like there was definitely some fine-line that it was on. I’ve tried this with the memory at 1063/5-5-5-15 (11:13 divider) and underclocked ram to 900/5-5-5-15 (1:1 divider, both linked & synced, and unlinked) all at the 1800FSB. Keep in mind that 1066 is known-good/stock on these 2 dominator sticks (2x 1GB), proven for over a year, and the corsair fan is on them too. With so many constants (prime-stable cpu, known-stable memory at speed/timing/volts), the only issue seems to be the northbridge and the balance between voltages and heat building up somewhere. SuperPi is the only indicator of a problem.
If I could stabilize the SuperPi issue, I’d be at a rock solid OC, and be satisfied.
Testing SuperPi with ram underclocked at 900/5-5-5-15, NBvolts at 1.55v.
At 1.50v, SuperPi locked as did the following reboot. Upping NB to 1.55v got me back to windows and stable SuperPi, having just run a 32M and a bunch of 4M’s. After turning the fans all down to a respectable noise level and waiting 5 minutes @ idle… doing another 4M resulted in a lock after about ONE second. Dropped SB voltage to 1.55v (from 1.65v) to try to get rid of some heat buildup in heatpipes. Passed a couple of 4M’s at full fan speed. Turned down fans to low setting again, waited 5 minutes, and it locked after the initial value and first loop completed.
Testing SuperPi at the 1063 5-5-5-15 ram speed on the 11:13 divider and 1.55v NB.
I’m noticing the same issue. At first I thought it was the high ram speed combined with a quad that was overpowering the northbridge… but the same trend seems to be happening as with the 900 ram speed. Passed a 32M with no problems at full fan speed.
It’s funny that with the NB voltage the same as it was for the E6600, it locks NOW when hot with the quad but, with the dual core it never did, even with the fans turned off for a period of time and getting VERY hot. Case temp is the same, as the water removes any heat from the quad without dumping it into the tower. That, and no side panel and a huge 240mm fan! The heatsinks were NOT incredibly hot to the touch when the lockup occurs. They’ve definitely been hotter while experimenting with the E6600 and fan speeds. Maybe it’s some other component on the board overheating with a quad?
Just thought I’d share my experiences. :up: Any suggestions?? I’m still a little uncertain about when to play with 1.2HT and CPU VTT. Would those change any of this? That’s about all I have left to mess with!
UPDATE:
Crashed in Oblivion with only like 25% of each core loaded. Rebooted and ran prime with the BLEND test to stress the memory / NB. Failed in like 3 seconds. Upped NB volts to 1.60, and it failed in about 15 seconds. Upped to 1.70, failed in about 30 seconds. Feeling like I had maxed my safe voltage, I backed down to 425. No boot. Its really hating a lot of the 1700FSB range. This is with the voltages that WORK at 1800FSB. You'd think that going DOWN a bit in speed would be MORE stable at a given voltage, not less!

Started with +10 and got a little further in. 5min or so... and then it locked. Went to +20mv and it went a little longer. Then to +30mv (the max). Crashed in about the same amout of time as +20mv but messing with these still bought quite a bit of time. I feel like if i LOOK at the computer wrong, or sneeze, or something, it's all going to crash! I think this chipset is bad for my mental health! LOL

I'm on my second Q6600 G0 with this board. Couldn't get the other one to do much more than 3.0 (probably only needed more vcore though - I'm very inexperienced).
I tried Linflas's magical settings from post #210 in this thread but temperature was an issue for me back then....and still is now....but not as bad, and I still have to lap the CPU. I changed a few voltages from Linflas's settings, it would do 425 x 8, but not 425 x 9 or 412 x 9, but it's doing 450 x 8 right now but I set vcore @ 1.5875 and I measure 1.62 - 1.64 @ load during Prime blend....wtf?!?....at some point, does the board overvolt vcore???? cus I was around 1.5 set in bios with the old chip, but had about the same vdroop as Linflas....about 1.47 real.:shrug:
I still gotta' try reducing Vcore, 1.2v HT, CPU VTT, and memory voltage. Anyway, here's a screen shot, and a list of the settings I'm using:

Anyone tried the HP Blackbird BIOS V5.05? I just flashed mine n the highest I can go with my Q6600 G0 n 4 sticks of 1gb ram is 2.97ghz at 1320FSB. U guys reckon it'll go higher if I ran only 2 sticks of ram? I have the same problem with bios 1303, goes at 1800FSB all day but the minute I use 4 sticks of ram, it wont go more than 1333 FSB.
@socheat : first opt for better cooling before doing any overclocking, this Asus cooler seems even worse than the boxed one...
@Ianho : Try to keep the ram in sync Ianho with the FSB , so keep a 1:1divider... force 2T on the ram and if required loosen up the timings eg ya ram is PC6400 4-4-4-12 try 5-5-5-15... for 4dimms most users up the NB voltage a tiny bit though it needs active cooling as even the best heatpipe cannot cool the 680i chipset enough...
Great thread guys, been reading this over and over again.
However I can't seem to get my Q6600 to get anywhere above 3.3GHz, anytime I try any of the suggested settings, my MB won't post at all.
Tried moving my FSB to 1600(x9) or 1800(x8) but still won't post. In fact nearly anything above 1466 refuses to post (haven't nailed down the exact number yet).
Quick questions:
1. Does Bios 1303 on the Striker have some issue with this that 1301 solves? (my next step is to try 1301).
2. I also see alot of mention about 4 DIMMs being "hard" on the NB set. I do run 4 x 2GB DIMMs so I might try pulling two out (leaving dual-channel still running however) and see if that helps.

Are you running your RAM 1:1 with the FSB or are you using another divider?
Just saw it, you're running unlinked mode. Try to run your RAM a bit slower with 1:1 divider.
Link boost was an overclock of the PCI express bus in order to get a better 3dscore am i right ?
That was the theory behind it , all it gave to me was instability :)
Well the snow is so bad today I had to work from home... and what do you know, I happened to accidently work on my machine for a bit :p:
I tried removing a pair of dimms, no go still.
Then I flashed to 1301 and set the clocks to 1800 and 8 and BAMMO! We have POST! :shocked:
So I stuck the dimms back in and it still posted.
Next got it booted up in Vista 64 and started to setup for a 3DMark06 run. While messing around with Everest it hung nicely and then would not post. Tried various things, no go. Pulled the extra 2 dimms again and it posted.
Booted back into Vista and it hung part way into 3DMark06. Restarted and it won't post (DET IDE on LCD).
Reseting the CMOS works but it refuses to post now at the same settings it did before (well at the 3.6 Ghz setting), so time to start tweaking.
Nice to see it booted at least twice at 3.6 heh. And to see that 1301 fixed whatever was stopping me in 1303.
EDIT: Spoke too soon, after that second lockup in Vista, it won't post no matter what settings I try. Even my original 3.3Ghz from the 1303 bios only partially posts. Cleared CMOS boots perfectly of course. Trying a bunch of items and then will go back to 1303.
Back to testing...I mean working...yeah yeah, that's it... :up:
Well 1303 boots just fine again at my 3.3 settings.
Tried to narrow down the FSB to see if there was a hole and found that anything above 375 will cause it to not post (with 1303). Even that locked while booting Vista but I did not tweak it much further.
Back to beating on that CMOS button again...

While I was waiting for my account to be verified. Since then I've ordered and received my Q6600 and many other parts for my Striker.
I went ahead and tested the water to see if I could get the OC going using Linflas's magical setting. Bam! booted into windows first try at 3.6g 450x8.
I started the bench using Prime 95 with small ftt (whatever it was I don't remember). It didn't even last 15 seconds. The computer quickly shuts down. I remembered Coretemps reading the temps at 75-78c for all the cores! This can't be good...
After a few subsequents settings and Priming, even at stock settings the computer would eventually shut it self down. Since I'm still using the stock HS, I'm suspecting that it is inefficient cooling on the MOSFET. As a matter of fact I hacked the heat pipes off to supplant NB water block.
I figured my Gigabyte Galaxy II kit worked well with the E6600 (yes new to the liquid cooling) but it isn't going to hold up looping it with the Quad+NB.
I figured upgrade the cooling gears, but what do you guys think?
I've never done any cooling beyond cold winter air from outside (YET:D ). However, my not yet lapped cpu is doing 450 x 8 with more vcore than Linflas's settings at around 60-65C (coretemp) during prime95 small fft's with a tru120x and an 88cfm yate loon fan.
Dunno what your watercooling set-up is capable of....maybe remount the cpu block:shrug:

Ok, i have tried 3 main settings, one full success, one semi-success, one no success, i have followed most of the settings from Linflas magic numbers, with some changes (ill post detailed settings later, im not at home), in all 3 cases vdroop is approx 0.05:
- 3.150 Ghz fully stable after 8 Hrs of Prime and OCCT, temps reaching 52 avg full load on Core Temp, Linflas numbers with changes in Vcore (1.32), RAM (1.875) and rest of voltages Auto, LDT Freq 4x, ram speed 850.
- 3.6 Ghz too hot with Linflas magic numbers, reached almost 80 on full load, canceled, guess is the 1.5 for Vcore and NB,SB numbers that it cant take without water cooling.
- 3.4 Ghz fully stable 8 hrs on Prime small fft, but OCCT crashes after 1 hour 6 min. Vcore 1.3625 (also tried 1.38), RAM 1.90, rest of voltages Auto (tried upping 1.2 HTT to 1.4), RAM spd 850, as per Thorvald insistent comments :) (can this be 1000 or does it HAVE to be 1:1 sync with fsb?), FSB 425, MULT 8, LDT Freq 4x, rest of settings as per Linflas, specially the RAM, we have the same. Temps reach the same avg. of 52c full load. Also this gave me 3DMark06 15684...
My goal is 3.4 Ghz, i dont want to go water cooling, at most i would replace the heatsink and Tuniq with probably a Thermalright Ultra 20 extreme and thermalright mosfets and NB coolers (HR-09S/U and HR-05 SLI/IFX) (is this the best option for non-water?), so based on my sketchy settings (as i said before ill post more organized and detailed settings once i get home), what would you recommend? What has me puzzled is that 8 hrs of Prime works perfectly, yet OCCT crashes after only 66 Min...

Hi guys i've been reading this thread for some time and at last got my striker extreme and q600 and i have some problems;
i am trying to hit 3.6 ghz and i am using corsair dominator twin 2x1gb 1066 mhz. memory modules, bios 1301 and q6600 G0 with VID 1.2625 my problem is the rams work 1066 mhz with 5-5-5-15-2T timings without a problem but when i overclock i cannot get the memory frequency exactly 1066 mhz and i cannot find a stable timing and voltage settings for my ram, tried 800 mhz, 850 mhz, 900 mhz with different timings and no luck, tried to loosen the timings up to 7-7-7-24 no luck also and sometimes i even get no boot disk please insert a boot disk error.

With the Dominator memory I would set the vDimm to 2.0v at a minimum and go up from there. Run memtest for basic stability testing before getting into windows.Quote:

I'm measuring like 1.798 and I set 1.575 in BIOS. CPU-Z 1.44 says 1.440. ASUS Probe says 1.52.

If it posts but doesn't get into windows you need eg more Vcore or CPU VTT... don't blame the ram for nothing... best thing to do with a quad is to keep ram and FSB 1:1 so 450 FSB 900 ram speed... nothing less nothing more... and get some decent cooling on the heatpipe... blame the 680i chipset...Quote:

I don't think that 4ghz is Striker related but more CPU limit... I have an eVGA 780i here Akuma and man it rocks, also has some divider issues ( surely if ya set ram to linked mode ) but 450FSB with QX9650 is absolutely no issue with only 1.35NB voltage (though I only benched the rig not priming...) and ram at 1200mhz 5-5-5-15 2T... and 400-425 and 450FSB work at each multi with the quad. Plus if I can believe the bios readouts, the NB only get's up to 60°C under load (redid the heatpipe and added a beefy 6cm fan on it)
Oh menn.. hearing that makes me want to upgrade my PC again :P

For my old Striker 1301 bios was very lovely with the Q6600 but I only ran 8x as my B3 CPU in those days got very hot...never had the chance to get a GO going on it

Yes, I'm using Linflas' settings, posted above by Leeghoofd.
I'm using a Thermochill 120.3 to cool my CPU (D-Tek Fuzion), NB and mosfets (EK).
Q6600 G0 is idle at 40 celcius. Load around 60.
Very satisfied and everything runs smooth.
Also very happy with the G.Skill 2x2GB 1000Mhz, which is underclocked to 850.
Guess that's really the "magic setup" for the Striker :)
But it's a shame, I can't get it over 4Ghz :(

Yep 1301, never had the chance to try 1503 bios... I got a striker on the way from a friend ( thx Gizmo ) he got fed up with it.
I hope to bring it back to live with a quad and some modded cooling... I'll keep ya posted what the baord does... but he tried almost everything known to mankind to get it working... maybe I don't succeed either...
I banged my head against my first striker (C2D though, not quad) for months.
Eventually came to my senses and RMA'd. The replacement board has been great. I'm not a hot shot yet, so haven't tried anything crazy with my simple aircooling setup. IIRC, I was able to crank E6850 to 3.8 (425x9) very easily, although the vcore was up there...not something I wanted to run 24x7.
I'm using BIOS version 1303 by the way.
It worked also very stable for me, so I didn't try 1301.
Thanks Akuma2000. 1303 seems best for me too....but my vcore overvolts what is set in bios....at some point....cus it used to be lower than what I set (when I was around 300 - 333 x 9....@ maybe 1.35 - 1.4 vcore....don't remember voltage).
I finally got into Windows @ 425 x 9 @ almost 1.7vcore in bios (I don't even want to know what it was real:D). Started priming and core temp showed 75C on hottest core and then locked up (or rebooted) a few minutes later. This was after I gradually went up in vcore from where I was for 450 x 8. Had a hard time getting to windows screen at first.
I never lapped this cpu yet. I only half @$$ed lapped the heatsink (i'm on air). I didn't go any further. Back at 450 x 8....for now. Gonna break it down and lap this weekend....maybe pick up a 780i too:D.
there's a new 1504 bios now... no words on changelog yet...
people on the asus forum says that the 1504 bios is horrible and some cant even downgrade back to older bios. for me 1301 and 1303 are the best. Using 1301 and no problem at all.
yeah i had this problem as i decided to try out this new bios to see if it was any different from the others and i couldn't downgrade, in EZflash or with Asus update so i had a quick look through the thread i found the bios in and found it could be done in dos so i booted into dos and use awdflash to get it to work.
I am awaiting shipment of 2 new Gigabyte GeForce 9800 GX2 and plan on running them SLi. I have read a lot and it seems that with Vista64, installing even 1 could be difficult so any suggestions would be welcomed.

I have heard people say that 4 x 1gb sticks of ram is awful for OC'ing on the striker so im using 2 at the moment until i get this sorted. What do people think? are 4 x 1gb bad or is it okay? Or would a 2x2gb setup be much better?

Hi ryan. Welcome. These forums are here to help you. no one will ever get mad at u asking for help (well they shouldn't anyways :p ). Have you removed the stock heat pipes and replaced the TIM? You may be over heating. drop your 1.2 from 1.7 to 1.5 and maybe lower your SB some. Definitely replace the stock Thermal interface material on the NB and SB with some Arctic ceramic or silver. if you don't have ceramic, be very careful though with the silver because it is conductive. On the VR's ( around the CPU) just inspect the tape to make sure it is making good contact. You don't want silver or ceramic there. Maybe change your memory to 5-5-5-15 for testing. I never had issues with 4x1gb so once you get past whatever is holding you back now, the 4gb shouldnt be an issue at all. What are your CPU temps like in the bios? Good luck!
Indeed most Strikers that went well were modified with aftermarket cooling...The NB heats up the heatpipe too quickly, adding extra heat to the other components too...
Are you sure 1.42 Vcore is enough for your CPU for 3.6Ghz ops ? also adding more CPU VTT helped with mine...
If 3.6 remains a no go, you can try eg 425 (if it isn't a FSB hole) with 8 multi to give ya 3.4Ghz, always keep ram in sync with FSB with the quads and don't push timings... so keep them relaxed at all times...
My max on my Striker was 3.4Ghz... with the stock heatpipe with added fans... now with the wolfdale even 475FSB is no issue with the aftermarket cooling and 2 x 2Gb dimms...
I've tested 1501 too with the yorkfield ( infact 1503 and 1601 too) and that gave good results too as 400FSB was bootable... but SLI was messed up with that release...

Mine just died, CPU Init for the 2nd time. I fixed it the first time, but the second time is a no go. I'm fed up and moving on. Looking at some 780i's right now.
I've tried so many settings and it just wouldn't work. I've tried Linflas's and a few others from different sites, however I am able to boot and browse windows at 3.8 (Linflas's setting) but when primed all hell breaks loose.
My temps are fine, and everything is water cooled (cpu,mosfet, nb, sb,). I've tried 3.8, 3.6, 3.4, 3.3, 3.2. Temps were normal, but they all failed after 5-15 mines of small FFT Prime. All Priming conclude to the same result, the computer just shuts off automatically...
I thought about it being heat issue, but everything is water cooled! I checked every block and they're all secured. I'm not sure what else to suspect :shrug: power supply? I feel like that's a long shot...

I purchased the MB back in november, and i was considering watercooling the entire system, north bridge, south bridge, cpu, 2 x gpu etc until i saw how much it cost. I would rather buy a whole new motherboard than spend that much watercooling. Im considering selling my pc and building another one over the next few months so i doubt it would be worth finding a non water cooling solution until then. The new system looks like its going to cost about £1400 but i might just leave it until next year if i can get this striker sorted. Anyway if i touch it then i immediately burn myself, the damn thing must be hitting about 130 degrees C. Even so though, that feels about the same temperature as when my pc isnt overclocked! Surely it shouldnt be getting that hot though? If i do keep this board, and thats purely based on this overclocking succes, which heatsinks would you recommend that i replace the stock with?
Im also experiencing some freezeups in the bios, could the overheating be related to this? And im sick of these damn USB Init errors, i keep having to unplug my pc for half an hour seeing as the clear cmos button doesnt seem to do much. There seems to be so many things that can go wrong with this board. So many things to hold me back aswell, which makes this overclocking very time consuming.
As for my temps though, after about 15 mins in the bios they hover around the high 40's. Thats with my tuniq tower on lowest rpm to keep it quiet.
I have lowered my 1.2 option to 1.5 and my sb to 1.60 and its failing to get past the bios screen due to many of USB init errors. Is there any solution to this? it seems that every time i touch the bios settings, i get this error when i start up. After 30 mins of problem solving i get about one chance to try a new setting before im out of action again.
Right, booted up with the new settings and the windows loading screen doesnt come up.
BTW, as leeghoofd pointed out, my vcore in my bios is 1.525. I only put the 'actual' bit in the description of my settings above as i copied it directly from linflas' post. I just presumed thats what showed up in windows?
Attempt 2:
Vcore at 1.5, SB reduced to 1.55. USB INIT errors. After 11 unplugs, resetting cmos etc i have managed to get it to boot. Now im into windows :D hooray!
Maybe Not :( it has reset my settings to 2.4ghz. I really thought that was it! Restarted my pc and then im back with more USB init errors. Is this something to do with the settings im using? or maybe the bios version? 1303.

It seems that tonight i am having really bad luck with usb init error messages so its taking me forever to change any settings as i can hardly get into the bios.
I really want to try and nail this 3.6 before retreating to anything lower :)
Why do you need to keep the ram in sync with the cpu though? does it make the system more stable? atm im running my ram at 900mhz as my fsb is 1800mhz. Im also using 555 15 timings until i get this sorted.
