My 2 cents on HDR photography... When done correctly, it creates an incredible effect and can produce awesome photographs. The problem is that maybe 80% of the HDR i see strewn about these internets is horribly overdone. In my opinion, HDR is a method used to take a scene in the real world which can be perceived correctly by the eye but not by a camera to create a photograph which represents the image produced by the eye as closely as possible (what kind of grammar is that?). If I can tell that an image is an HDR, it's been overdone - I believe photography is supposed to show the real world, not some oversaturated world where the shadows and highlights have been manipulated to the point where it's just not a photograph of the real world anymore.
Now that HDR is popular and can be done by anyone with half a brain and a camera, it's popped up everywhere and it just pains my eyes to see some of the monstrous creations produced by overzealous tonemapping. To reemphasize, this doesn't mean HDR automatically makes an overprocessed picture. The contrast ratio of the human eye is 100:1 static and 1,000,000:1 dynamic. If a scene has elements which are both on the upper and lower range of the static 100:1, a camera can't capture both of them at once without overblowing one or underexposing the other. When you make an HDR, the idea is to combine multiple pictures which, in the group, have appropriately exposed every section of the scene. A good HDR will look like the real world that you can see out of your eye directly.
Now, not to be too harsh a critic of other XSers, Lestat is a perfect example of a badly done HDR. On the other hand, hoax and Marin show how HDR can be used to create good photographs; compare them to Lestat's last picture, or even his first one. ANP's is alright, but in the top right you can see the highlights were messed up by the HDR processing. Another exposure at an even lower level could have avoided that.
+1
It seems many people have tonemapping a LDR, 8-bit image is somehow equivalent to tonemapping a full 32-bit FP image. I too hate seeing those 'Top 100 Best HDRs' topics, only to find a select few being actual, properly tonemapped HDRs. While the extreme tonemapping (i.e haloing, over saturation) is an unique effect, it should be disassociated with what HDR processing was supposed to be intended for.
Summer is coming back up here in Oregon. Last of some of the HDRs I did back last year in Hawaii. Hopefully I'll be able to grab some nice ones in the next few months :)

Apparently some photographers feel that the haloing or oversaturation effect is an artistic form of expression. If so, then more power to them. Ihave seen and have produced some HDR images with alittle extra "tweak" that look kinda cool, but I think everyone knows it's meer folly and nothing more. I have used HDR in place of graduated neutral density filters to shoot sunrises/sunsets with some surprising results.
Anyway, the way I view it, if you don't like it don't look at it.

Wow mate ! I just "traveled" through the whole thread, and this was seriously the BEST HDR picture i found, no doubt ! Some may not have the same opinion, i respect it, but believe me, this is by far my favorite ! Very nice :D
Could i have the original size version, please ?
Good luck with some more HDR pictures, i'm waiting
Thanks for the compliments! Unfortunately I can't provide a higher resolution image as I recently licensed the photo for reprinting by a commercial firm so part of the agreement is to keep the available public images for "web viewing only". Good and bad in it's own ways I guess :)
I do have a few more available via my blog at http://news.calgarytheatresystems.com - see if you can pick out the HDR ones- some are obvious while other not so much :)
Edit: pic reposted - scroll down pls..
Hey there Mescalamba,
There is one thing i'm unsure about : what programme have you used to make this HDR shot ? Normally, clouds come out differently...
Anyways, the colors are not too much, in fact i think this picture is a little washed out for an HDR image.
Here you can see what i did with your image :) hope you like it
http://uploads.imagup.com/10/1249672...6f54eb7e_o.jpg
Lol.. intent of HDR is to extend dynamic range of images to match real world (or at least trying to be closer) .. not to make over-saturated childern painting. Which is exactly what you turned my pic to. :)
Tough we can have different opinion, or like different things.. but this is real color-bomb. :D
Iīm using Photomatix.. easiest way to make HDR.. tough, results are little bit better when one use PS4 properly.. but its much more harder..

Nice sky..maybe darken image a bit? Or add some contrast and little bit of darkening.. its too light. And quite a lot of noise, maybe some smoothing?
When you watch the world with your own eyes, they act like a camera, in the way that they adapt to the amount of light. This means that when there is much light, dark areas will appear totally black and you won't be able to distinguish anything in that part. HDR is a combination of dark areas becoming lighter, and lighter areas becoming darker. This is totally unrealistic since no one will ever be able to see anything like that.
But maybe you mean "realistic" in the way that things "are" and not in the way that we "see" them ? In that case, you are right, and i apologize for my misunderstanding :)
Anyways, when you take a look at HDR pictures, colors are very bright and clouds seem very unrealistic. The purpose of HDR for me was to offer a new way of seeing things, another perspective. I found it interesting and played with settings to offer the greatest pictures, but that wouldn't be HDR then
Well, I took HDR as possibility of getting perfectly exposed picture. And few words about HDR are .. here > Naturescapes HDR
But it really depends on what you want from HDR pic.. you can make nicely surreal scenes with it, as quite "normal" pics..
..this time was test "subject" shroom. :D

Post your opinion if you like it, or if you donīt. :)
sweet :)
Thanks.. I guess its now more in your "style" but I liked it too this way. :D
Well, i think every one's got it's one way of expressing their point of view of what HDR is, and that is indeed more the way i see it :)
I don't mean by that that the last HDR picture you did wasn't good, not at all ! I really loved it !
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2583/...5a3fa2ce_o.jpg
After like 4-5 versions I made this.. finally got that right HDR feel into that.. yes, its little bit more "un-real" .. but I think its best that can be made from that photos.. Tough I really hate G1 for having such much noise at ISO 100.. and HDR only increase that..
I like night pics and HDR.. both in which G1 sucks.. aint it great? :(
a bit too much saturation on the roofs for me, nice pic otherwise
dslr with grey filter for smooth river would have been perfect :)
Hm, yea its little bit oversaturatedon roofs.. ND filtr would help, maybe Iīll try it if I get some new lens..
Wh!te Sh4dow - Good luck with it.. what camera do you have?
Thanks, i'm taking pictures with the help of my friends camera, a D50 and a D200 :)
EDIT : I decided i would post my WIP now anyways, though i'm really not satisfied with the result at all ... my friend messed up with the tone mapping, and i can't make the picture look like it was before. Anyways here it is :
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/265...tonemapped.jpg
I know it's way to over-saturated, but if i remove it, it looks far too colorless, i don't seem to find the "middle".
From how much pics its done? If you can provide "raw" I can take a look what can be done.. It needs little bit more light balance (depending on what SW you use for creating that), cause you have "halo" effect on roof..
D200 is fine for this.. tough, it needs some great ISO 100 performing dSLR to get really good pics..
It looks really sharp, ainīt that "fake" HDR made from one pic with different exposures?
But anyway, it looks quite good..

They're all "fake" HDR though since I only shot a single RAW. The top 3 were on a moving boat tour though so it would of been rather difficult regardless IMO. Bottom 3 I could have done multiple exposures but I wasn't carrying a tripod nor do I have a stabilized lens and well I forgot at the time
If you're wondering where these are from, top 3 are the Thousand Islands, namely Boldt Castle (first one and 2nd is the boat house). Bottom 3 are in Kingston, ON, Canada.
I'll admit, I'm still a total n00b to true photography. Just starting my DSLR adventures with my Rebel XS and kit lens. I only had it for a few weeks prior to this vacation.
jdrom > Well, those pictures do look good indeed ! it's always difficult to try getting a real HDR without attaching the camera anywhere, it gets blurry very easily.
jdrom:
Just "wow".. very nice pics, probably even without HDR. I guess theres quite a lot to squeeze from Rebel XS.. And lovely places..
Yeah, but not like I had control of that :p:
I know that all too well from trying to do hand-held HDR with my old P&S. Was simply impossible.
Ehh, without HDR they are kind of lack luster to be honest. I was actually surprised at how much detail Photomatrix was able to pull out from the RAW.
I've been messing around with Photomatix, and I got this...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...9scaledHDR.jpg
I have another I'm working on that I like perfectly fine without tone mapping, but I can't seem to save it like that...
Seriously tell me what you think, I'm trying to get a better feel for this sort of thing.
Pretty strong corner vignetting.. you can remove that in PS easily.. well in almost any post-processing SW. Otherwise, pic is nice.. little bit blurry as always (hand held?). Maybe try to sharpen it a bit.. and maybe add a bit colors and change white balance, it has really "warm" colors.. must be like 4500 Kelvins or so.. Tough, not a issue if you like warm colors.
Well and if you can find some better subject.. best are high-contrast scenes with blue sky and such. I think you cant get much out of this..
Yea, I had one pic that would be perfect even without tone-maping, only way is to do it in PS instead of Photomatix..
Yeah, it was hand held, clicked the photomatix option to try to align them a little, it wasn't too terribly misaligned, but enough I suppose. I didn't think to take out the corners in PS, sorry about that. Seems that 18mm focal length loves that crap, lol.
I did make it a bit too warm, I just liked that feel to it...I'll try to get more shots that are better subject matter.
Canon Rebel XS with the kit lens, 18-55mm.
I decided to make a paintball hdr even tho there isnt a background to the picture. I thought it turned out pretty good for my 2nd pic hdr

Yea, HDR is possible even with different objects, than usually.. btw. nice one, quite interesting. With what you shoot? :) (some EXIF data welcomed).
Kristall-99 > Wow, dude, i seriously love paintball (i own a paintball gun myself) and that picture is crazy ! could you please post the picture in it's original size ? i'd like to have it as a screen saver :D You do have talent ;)

Im not 100% positive on these. These are my camera settings at the moment but I didn't touch the camera so it should be the same settings.

i love it :) great work ! what program did you use ? photomatix ?
Yes Wh!te Sh4dow, i used photomatix. :)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3522/...b22b3ce0_o.jpg
My overboosted HDR. :D Kinda felt that its not that bad idea.. It has lots of noise even on ISO 100, cause SNR sux on G1.. and some CA, cause lens are quite good but not perfect.. Maybe Iīll try next time to process all pics, before HDR merge..
Very nice, Blackstare! Like all these showing up on this page.
Here's one for fun - intentionally Over Done (5 exposures / handheld / Photomatix):

Nice to see some "normal" HDR.. Nice, but could be tiny bit brighter and tiny bit less smoothed..
Tough.. when I think about it.. its hard to make good - almost normal looking HDR..
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3489/...7a1356ce_o.jpg
Nice one, Mescalamba.
Now you guys got me thinking HDR ...
Here's one that's more on the "normal-looking" side:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/6...33_hxJxL-L.jpg
And another, way-over-the-top cartoon style
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/6...98_WGJbJ-L.jpg
I know most don't care for the OTT HDR shots - but, it's more fun/interesting than this:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/6...69_YoKgQ-S.jpg
I like that church photo.. that HDR is almost unnoticable..
Overdone HDRīs aint bad, but I donīt like that halo effects..
I never really liked photomatix. It's near impossible to get a clean image without tone mapping and that just creates too much of an unrealistic look. Useful if you're going for that look though. I've always loved photoshop for merging exposures. Though no matter what you're using it's always better to use a tripod :D
The latest version of Photomatix seems much more flexible - a lot easier to do blends, and also to get more natural looking photographys (or the crazy ones, too).
Testing out some new software:

No it doesn't. Your shot looks very well done. But your comment above the picture says it all. That it's tough to do. With photoshop, I just load in the files and it's done. Unless you have an alignment issue. There no manual processing or tone mapping you just load the files. I didn't do anything to the shot I posted except load 7 of 9 exposures, kick up the fill light a touch, resize, and save.
Heh, ok, Iīll try PS next time..
Hey guys - give me some feedback on this one, please. Photomatix - 5 exposures, processed to minimize the Over the Top HDR look. Does it work, or still too much?
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/6...38_pB9UG-L.jpg
Little bit too much, but ok for most ppl. Try more light smoothing.. that halo effect isnīt necessary, especially if you want "normal" looking HDR..
Or just mail me rawīs.. Iīll process them, show you results and settings. :D
But as I said.. its fine for most ppl.. Iīm kinda perfectionist..
the halo is barely noticeable, because clouds create an optical illusion :)
more noticeable on the water
great picture, though! scotland?
Great picture shazza! Well done.
Thanks for the feedback on my shot, folks (yes - it was Scotland). I'll do some more work on my images and repost after we get home in a few days.

Nice ones, Mescalamba. They don't scream "I'm an HDR!" (although I do think that's fun for the right subjects)
Thank you. :) Iīll post some overshoted HDR too.. if I make some worth it.. probably not soon.. going to sell current cam and start making some money for D700..

Got new case, so I told myself: "Hey try some home-made HDR!"
This is result.. I played a bit with color profiles, so.. tell me, does it have slight or big reddish-warm tint? (just checking if my PS isnīt lying to me.. and I donīt have "normal" LCD to check colors..). And yes, monitor was.. um.. misaligned? :D
Some HDR tries from me...i am new and i am not sure that is it this real HDR>....but from my cam i cant get more :)
